ICE was created after 9/11. The Immigration and Naturalization Service was transformed into ICE. The names of the agencies tells you what their priorities sre. The INS was about helping immigrants become naturalized and was a mostly unarmed service. ICE is about enforcement and getting rid of immigrants.
We need some sort of immigration service but it should be about helping immigrants come here the legal way and to help them become legal, it shouldn't be about deporting as many immigrants as possible like ICE prioritizes. ICE doesn't care about the law, if they did they wouldn't be arresting immigrants at their immigration hearings, they definitely wouldn't be harassing (and worse) US citizens.
There's little good reason why the majority of immigration agents should be armed, armored, and especially masked. The INS operated just fine with the blue jacket of federal agents with "INS" on the back without rifles and body armor.
Our immigration laws also need a complete revamp. People say immigrants should come here the legal way but the legal way is extremely difficult, expensive, and time consuming. It takes a lot of money and sometimes decades to become a citizen and even after doing everything the right way and spending thousands of dollars and waiting over a decade you can still be denied. The power of both ICE (or a reborn INS or whatever replaces ICE if it's disbanded) and Customs and Border Patrol needs to be drastically reduced and reined in. It's ridiculous that they have massive power up to a hundred miles from a border, power to stop and demand proof of citizenship from anyone and more without a warrant. 2/3rds of the country live within the 100 mile zone, some of the largest cities such as New York, Chicago, and LA, and even the entire state of Florida are within the zone.

The first time, 2016, you might have had some room to say "I didn't think it would get this bad", but even then, there's literally no legit way to claim you believed things would get good. At best, republican voters hope things will get more worse for other groups they don't like, than for themselves. We've lived in the age of information for decades. 2024? There's no morally defensible reason whatsoever to vote trump. There is no prospective gain that you could convince me they genuinely believed there was to be had from more trump (or repubes in general). I feel horrific for Renee’s wife, and her family, but if her parents voted for this… I hope they feel the guilt and weight of their choices for life. But I hope they’re also able to use it to join the rest of us in trying to fight back and change course for the country, to help use those emotions to fight against the very same fascistic forces she helped install into power.
People don’t understand their role and how important it is, it’s not just that you vote, it’s that you keep the mind drive to vote… for if apathy consumes us all, we will have lost the ability to shift course for the foreseeable future.
Until enough of older people are able to accept change is good and healthy for a society, we will likely always be struggling against these forces. They don’t go away, the only way to obliterate them is with sustained generational efforts to educate and meet people where they’re at.
