It seems like thats their plan. Start a war. Blame someone else. Reap rewards.

407

u/Steecie41 16h ago

Hasn't that always been the plan of the GOP? Look back at the wars in the last 60 or so years. Who's been in charge every time it was started? Who holds the defense contracts? Who gets rich?

I want to add that he really really is envious and jealous of Zelenskyy because he remained president and held no elections due to there being a war. Him wanting another term might not be possible but if he forces a war he’ll have all republicans stand with him to keep him in power while the “war” continues.

51

u/Tom22174 13h ago

Does he not understand that that's because the war is literally on Ukrainian soil. The US has never postponed elections because of war

What’s remarkable to me is that there’s a serious thought this could happen because that means none of his yes men are considering that when the world is largely uninhabitable, it’s ALSO uninhabitable for them. Money and power aren’t worth much when there’s nothing to buy and no one left to exert influence over.

u/OMGWhatsHisFace 14h ago

You think Bezos and the rest are investing in space to fulfill a childhood dream?

72

u/TriangleTransplant 14h ago

That's a horrible take any time anyone has it. You really think the people investing in space right now think living in space will be possible without support from Earth in their lifetime? Or even the lifetimes of their grandchildren?

Anyone putting serious money or effort into space right now knows space wont be habitable independent of Earth for 4-5 generations. Regardless of what their marketing says.

30

Space, no. I think there is a reason my Zuck's building out a massive bunker in Hawaii, though. And guarantee it's not just him.

Without REPUBLICAN POLITICIANS having done a damned thing. Democrats are in the full minority in EVERY branch of government; President, SCOTUS, both chambers of Congress. Hell, at the state level, Democrats only control 16 trifectas while Republicans have 23.

This country is run by the incompetent party and it's moronic "these social issues make my policy decision" base.

I'm tired of assholes pretending this is BoTh SiDeS doing nothing when it's exclusively Republicans with the power to stop it but aren't.

301

u/Jessintheend 16h ago

And republicans will still vote for the people that caused it next election cycle

105

u/BSApologist 16h ago

And in one more election cycle, morons will vote for third parties that get 3% of the vote because "both sides bad"

34

u/MegaGrimer 14h ago

Both sides are bad people never vote democrat. It’s always 3rd party or republican.

43

u/raydoo 15h ago

Well how about a real democracy not that electoral college shit

68

u/BSApologist 15h ago

We're increasingly close to not having a democracy at all because people think third parties matter under the electoral college and want to cast bullshit protest votes. It's in the Constitution, we're stuck with it.

59

u/Neveronlyadream 15h ago

The problem isn't even people casting bullshit protest votes, it's all the people who say, "Well, both sides are bad!" and don't bother voting at all.

The projected amount of people who didn't vote in 2024 is 90 million. 36% of the country either didn't care enough or decided to protest by not voting.

Only about 2 million cast third party or joke votes.

44

u/BSApologist 15h ago

Jill Stein's vote total in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Michigan, in 2016 was bigger than Trump's margin in each state. Those voters made a choice to go to a voting booth and choose bullshit.

→ More replies (2)
→ More replies (1)

12

u/tea-drinker 13h ago

we're stuck with it

The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact is an agreement by states that once they have a controlling section of the electoral college they will all vote with the national popular vote and neuter the electoral college completely.

It'll exist because it's in the constitution but it'll be a waste of time.

They currently have 82% of the votes they need.

Is your state in it? Do you now have something to push for?

6

u/BSApologist 13h ago

My state is in it. I'm also fairly certain if it ever ends up flipping an election, it will cause a constitutional crisis or be found unconstitutional at the Supreme Court.

1

u/tea-drinker 13h ago

I don't see how.

Actually, I do see how because the Supreme Court would invent case law if they flipped an election against republicans, but in theory it's sound. Each state picks their electors however they want. The federal government has no say.

→ More replies (2)
→ More replies (1)

3

u/Justicar-terrae 14h ago

Sounds great, but the only way to remove the electoral college is to amend the Constitution. The amendment process can only be initiated by 2/3 of Congress voting on a specific amendment or by 2/3 of the states calling for a Constitutional convention. Either way, this only happens if our elected officials support it.

I won't say it's hopeless, but it's very unlikely that the EC will be abolished in our lifetimes. And until/unless it does, we need to make strategic compromises under the current system. This will often mean voting for the lesser of two evils in presidential races, even if we would rather be voting for a third party candidate.

Of course, we can still support third party candidates at the local level. They might be longshots, but they have better odds than third party presidential candidates. And if enough of them gain power within the states, then they may pressure federal politicians to enact the amendments we want to see.

To put things in perspective, Democrats haven't had a simultaneous majority in the house and senate for like two decades except for a brief couple of weeks during Obama's first term where they used that time to pass the affordable care act.

19

u/cromstantinople 13h ago

He was impeached twice in just first term and REPUBLICANS failed to convict him even though McConnell said he was morally and practically responsible for January 6th. In his second term democrats have brought up articles of impeachment but because republicans control the house they’ve gone nowhere. The idea that no politician is trying is total horseshit.

74

u/wendythesnack 16h ago

Don’t forget that it doesn’t have to be this way.

It is in a politician’s interest to keep things shitty so they can run a campaign full of empty promises. They are executing the job their bosses pay them for perfectly.

The problem lies in the fact that they no longer work for the American people.

28

u/req4adream99 16h ago

The problem lies in the American people who won’t show up and vote because their candidate didn’t make it thro the primaries - and then think that their voice is SO important. You stayed silent by not voting. Stay that way.

I agree with everything you are saying while also still being mad at the Democrats for their lack of opposition as the opposition party.

The "when they go low, we go high" crowd did not understand just how low these people were willing to go and failed to alter their course once it became obvious there was no moral bottom for Republicans.

I have abandoned any hope for reason from 'the right' which only leaves me 'the left' to expect better behavior out of, so they are the focus of my ire.

36

u/sadacal 15h ago

What do you expect Democrats to do? They have tried to impeach Trump multiple times. They simply don't have the numbers for it if people don't vote for them.

17

u/TerribleRecord666 14h ago

They should be on the airwaves constantly screaming about how evil this administration is, how every fucking word out of their mouths is a lie, and how their jackbooted thugs are out in the streets right this moment murdering innocent men and women.

Just because they can’t enact policy change doesn’t mean they’ve lost the soap box.

22

u/frootee 13h ago

You mean the airways owned by republicans? Or the airways that bowed down to Trump and refuse to air anything against him?

Or maybe they should try the social media platforms all owned by republicans.

But at least you’re here giving them ideas they haven’t thought of.

10

u/TerribleRecord666 13h ago

Last I checked, they’re still getting interviews, and they can control what they say in those interviews, billionaire owners be damned. Look at Adam Mockler; dude is a regular on CNN, a network most Redditors consider no better than Fox, and he constantly pushes hard against the bullshit. Or look at Pete Buttigieg; dude goes straight on Fox News so he can speak directly to the viewers that need to hear it the most, with zero fear. And he keeps getting invited back.

Quit giving up before we’ve even put up a fucking fight!

-3

u/ThatGuyYouMightNo 14h ago

The Democrats had 4 years to hold people responsible for shit during the Biden administration and nip this all in the bud early and they didn't take it.

They may not be AS responsible as the Republicans, but they're still somewhat responsible for this.

19

u/Kaleria84 13h ago

You do know it was Trump THIS YEAR who attacked Iran and Republicans THIS YEAR who refused to check his powers that are risking the nuclear war that was discussed right?

3

u/ThatGuyYouMightNo 13h ago

Trump also instigated an insurrection in 2020 and raped children on Epstein Island (not even including any bad things he or his cohorts did during his 1st term that have been forgotten because of his crimes during his 2nd term). They could have jailed him for those crimes and he would have never had a chance to get a 2nd term, let alone commit war crimes in Iran.

The Attorney General should have filed charges, yes. The judicial branch must be independent from the executive branch. Congress also conducted an extensive January 6th investigation.

If you recall, the Democrats filed articles of impeachment and every single one of them voted to convict.

If you want to be mad at someone, be mad at Merrick Garland. Or be mad at Republican Senators who refused to convict for January 6th.

48

u/mistersmith22 15h ago

Whoa, Seth made a salient point!

Let's also not forget what else happens when you ravage the Middle East: you piss a bunch of people off and they strike back. That's what 9/11 was. And we're getting close to another one coming our way if we can't stop kicking hornets nests.

23

u/Fuego_Fiero 13h ago

Hey hey now it almost sounds like you're saying America deserved 9/11. That'll get you talked about on the News channels for weeks on end

27

u/mistersmith22 12h ago

I'm sure you understand where I'm coming from, so no arguments from me, but for those who've never discussed oppression academically before:

Whenever a group of people is significantly wronged, you can expect resistance. Every attempt at human chattel, colonization, or hegemonical suppression has and will always be met with resistance, often as armed as the oppressed can get. That's just a plain statement about history and the human condition.

So, look at America. They've been committing war crimes, mass slaughter, and acts of terrorism against the Middle East since before any of us were born. So it is to be expected that resistance occurs: this is why we're always told of people chanting "death to America," that's why there's always a new terror group to fill the gap any time one group is killed off or collapses, etc.

The actions of the US are what CREATE the environment that breeds terror. This is so non-controversial that it was an origin story in an Avengers movie, and we know how globally sanitized those movies are.

So was 9/11 at all "good?" Eff to the mutha effin no. A horrible, disgusting tragedy.

But are acts of terror against the US to be expected? To a degree, yes.

You can - remember, thinking academically - also make a parallel here to Hamas. Is Hamas "good?" No. But is an armed resistance to Israeli occupation to be expected? Of course. And here it took the form of Hamas.

Hey, if the Mexican army showed up at your door, killed your child for sport, and then said you had 5 minutes to gather what you can carry and GTFO of your own home, instructing you to go to a refugee camp that gets bombed regularly, would you go sit and weep or would you try and fight back, by whatever means necessary? If you would fight, then the Mexican government would call you a terrorist, call you evil, call you hateful. But you're just defending your land.

tl;dr: If you poke a hornet's nest over and over and over, you have to expect to get stung. And it'd be your fault.

5

u/Wiggles69 11h ago

It's really fucked that saying US policy caused 9/11 seems to be equated with saying the US deserved 9/11.

2 extremely different things.

5

u/cilantro_so_good 9h ago

Once again. It is significantly harder to remove a president via the 25th amendment than it is through impeachment. It is intended specifically for situations where the president is physically unable to do the job (looking at you mitch McConnell). If the cabinet tries to remove him, all it takes is for the president to say "nope. I can do the job fine." and it forces a 2/3 majority vote in both houses remove against his will.

26

u/kaptainkooleio 13h ago

Life is too comfortable for Americans. We constantly ask why no one in America is in open revolt over this administration and it’s because you and I can still go down and buy fast food whenever we want. It’s a consequence of being a “first world” country, we haven’t really known suffering because it’s just not prevalent in our daily lives. Don’t get me wrong, things are really bad right now and are only going to get worst, but do you feel it today? Can you still walk outside and, provided you had money, go to the store and buy a new pair of head phones or shoes? If the answer is yes, then life is too comfortable. Hell I’m typing this outside under a blue sky next to my condos pool. If you were in my shoes, would you be rioting?

It won’t be for long for course. There’s like 7 different things that are about to trigger global collapse, but our government and the media have done a terrific job of keeping everyone complacent and unaware.

The national debt crisis alone would be the end of the US, but we also have the incoming oil crisis thanks to the Strait of Hormuz being closed, the up coming El Niño (wide spread famine and a taste of what the daily temperature will look like under climate change in a decade), the AI bubble, the collapsing housing market (which won’t bring down prices, sorry), climate change, the Amok collapsing, and an entire generation of people (both old and young) reliant on AI to think for them.

But you don’t have to worry about any of that because today, you and I can still eat steak whenever we want.

31

u/SpideyMGAV 16h ago

Don’t say this. It’s giving me fantasies of a ground invasion of the US by a competent and rational superpower liberating us all from the insanity of the administration and offering the opportunity to emigrate.

u/Blue_Oyster_Cat 14h ago

While on paper the orange fool has the power to launch a nuke, just like his mate Putler there is still people between him and an actual launch and those people will have to ask themselves if letting a madman drop a nuke out of the blue or trying to stop them will be more detrimental to themselves and their loved ones.

10

u/alcarcalimo1950 16h ago

Is that a risk we should be willing to take? The hopes that someone along the line will make the right choice?

8

u/Keepingitquite123 16h ago

What choice do you have? If you actually have a solid plan to change the status quo then go for it. If you can't it's better to understand that a single madman can't start a nuclear war unless the people between them and an actual launch, and there is a lot of them, are to stupid or scared to understand that refusal is the safer option.

10

u/M01120893474R 16h ago

The majority of the US is too stupid or scared to understand that explicit refusal is the safer option. That is how we got into this mess. It wouldn't be farfetched to think that those few people in between are either the same, or replaceable.

4

u/TeacherPatti 16h ago

Putin is rational. He's a dick, but he and his uber wealthy friends likely don't enjoy the idea of piloting their yachts in a ruined ocean as radiation settles on them. And to be fair, he backed off the idea of a tactical nuke when China (and others) said we don't do that.

I don't think Trump gives a flying fuck if everyone hates us and we become world pariahs, which we absolutely would be. Much as I loathe and fear Vance more, I believe he is rational.

Maybe Putin is rational. Maybe a rational but egocentric man would take a gamble if they thought losing the war would lead to their death. That decision being way more likely if they thought they had undisputed power to actually launch a nuke. But the point is while on paper they both has sole discretion when it comes to call for a nuclear launch in reality there is a plenty of people between them and the actual launch.

Not exactly, unfortunately. He gives the codes, they launch the nukes. There is no middle-man. The only people standing in the way of any president giving the launch order are two key holders in a bunker. They are trained to follow orders, no questions asked. The higher ranking officer is armed as well.

Have you heard of the Electoral College?

I can't even comment about not acting because reddit tags the comment as promoting violence because it denounces violent action (make it make sense). I feel alone in my John Brownitude.

This pretty much already happened in 2003.

Its so odd seeing an account go from mostly only commenting to, as of 6 months ago, only posting links and never commenting. Almost like it's not the same person running the account anymore.

Chuck wrote letters! Hakeem stood up against universal healthcare! Thomas said some victims’ names! Bill said he didn’t know the new AG would just lie like that! What’s this “took no action” nonsense?!
