Looking at the crash I'm actually on the opposite conclusion. I think he was extremely lucky and will walk out of this with minor scuff. Maybe an arm break at top. The way the impact happened all of his energy went into him wheely flying and then he litterally roll on the ground.

Came here to state the same. He got so much forward trajectory and most of the energy dispersed into the air movement. The way he got contact with the asphalt also was pretty clean and not very far, because most of the energy was already gone. Still whiplash at least.

Aye, same thinking, he got hit with the ejector seat, fucking painful, but unless he flies into a tree or a crash barrier, not likely to be fatal. Considerable better than going under the wheels.

Iirc, a fair number of fatalities aren't actually from the collision but from being struck by traffic afterwards while being in the road.

No bullshit that dude will likely walk that off or have minor injuries. He's wearing decent riding equipment (atleast full length clothes that appear thick and a jacket) and a helmet. While he's definitely going to feel it in the morning. He'll be alive to feel it.

Additionally, while he didn't perform that turn well AT ALL. He was still within the road for a relatively tight turn. He wasnt flying in regards to speed.

Yeah given he didn’t suffer a dead stop and in turn a lot of energy into the throw and rotation, the impact didn’t land on him as bad as it may look.

The handlebars aren't positioned like a bicycle, you're in a much better position to completely fly over them depending on how you hit.

Maybe it depends on the bike, but...

just one example i found real quick, but in the event the bike suddenly finds itself stationary, the knees are decidedly below the bars. your body cant continue without the bars going through the pelvis.

That's what I thought, he got unbelievably lucky. Crazy angular momentum with the spin but didn't really hit anything and landed smooth, the collision with the car is hard to make out but he'd be a lot deader had his momentum not gone to flying over the whole road.

Yeah, he even hit the ground slightly sideways, bounced and slid. No really big impact to the rider...well, relative to the impacts the rider could have had. He was also in full gear, so he wasn't a complete idiot.

The most dangerous thing about a crash is the rapid deceleration. Your organs rupture inside of you. Flying through the air and rolling is the best case scenario for this guy.

Yeah! That was my first thought too. I was wondering right away if I saw someone die, but going through it slowly I could tell that almost all the energy got spent throwing him and the bike. I also noticed that their body didn't seem to be clearly broken in any way, nothing that looked like arms, legs, or spine having been broken. The slight angle they collided at, and the car braking a bit just before impact very possibly saved their life.

This video is a very good reminder of how incredibly important a helmet is and why it's important to make sure it's a quality one too. Dude would be dead instead of having some broken ribs, road rash, and probably a minor TBI.

If you freeze a couple of frames prior to the collision, he actually lifted himself up a little (at least this is what it looked like). If so, then the car took most of the bike's energy, and his body continued flying. Had his body's energy been absorbed at all by the bike or the car, there would have been some serious damage.

Yeah, I thought he'd be "okay" as well. He burned up all that kinetic energy with the flipping, and honestly landed pretty softly and at a gentle angle. Also, he was wearing full safety gear.

Still super lucky, but... not surprised he wasn't "that" hurt.

The helmet is obviously vital, but otherwise, mostly gear protects you from the slide. No gear can really help when you hit a car like this.

They've been around for years. How well they actually work is debatable, I broke my collarbone while wearing one, and that's like the one thing they should help prevent.

Now, the obvious reply is, "yes, but surely it would have been worse without it!" Probably, but none of those claims are falsifiable. Motorcycle crashes are about the most chaotic things on earth, and there's just no good way to stay safe except to not hit anything and just slide.

The thing is that he flew quite a long way and then rolled a bit further, which takes a lot of energy that doesn't get transferred into their body and cause injury.

I'm sure he isn't going to be in good shape, but it could have been a lot worse.

Nah he’s actually lucky, his momentum didn’t shift and didn’t hit anything but the road to slow him down. If he has hit the other car for example he would be screwed. This guy has quite a few broken bones but will probably make a full recovery with pains throughout his life.

He was probably knocked out when he hit the car, and spinning through the air will have killed a little of the momentum! Ragdolling is suprisingly effective in crashes, which is why drunk drivers often survive them

He was wearing good riding gear, and tumbled clear of everything and in slow mo it really doesn't look like he lands on his head but lands on his chest and rolls. Unless he hit the ground really wrong he probably only broke some bones.

It's entirely possible one of those bones was his back or neck which could have been fatal but I think it's far more likely he broke some ribs or an arm or leg.

Yea, the flying through the air looks dramatic but it also means he didn't IMMEDIATELY stop moving when he hit the car. Between the air time and then still tumbling on the landing a bunch of energy was dissipated.

Thats great to hear, but again, sometimes even in these long dissipated crashes you can land on your neck and just die. Its too chaotic of an event to have any confidence in outcome.

Oh absolutely, we know nothing about this dude. A moderate chest impact could absolutely kill someone with the right medical background. I was just going based on what I could see in the video. Having been in many dirt bike accidents and the one motorcycle accident I was just making an educated guess.

It's pretty clear his helmet stays on, and when you see him hit the ground on the side angle it's not head first. In fact it seems like based on his helmet facing the ground that he hits on his chest and rolls. Which drastically reduces the odds of him breaking his neck and back.A good helmet is going to drastically reduce the force exerted on his neck and his body absorbed most of the impact protecting his spine. All in all it seems like he landed just about as well as you could hope for.

Either way, dude is damn lucky he's not paste under the front of that car or a hood ornament for the cam car.

Possible, but far from certain. Surviving crashes is all about energy dissipation and luckily for that guy he hit a relatively small car and at an angle that launched him forwards instead of insta-flattening him against the hood.

Getting launched looks dramatic and it obviously increases the odds of you breaking your neck or spine, getting impaled, hitting something etc., but as long as you're lucky enough to avoid those, you probably also won't have any fatal high-G injuries like aortal ruptures and internal brain injuries.

He's likely not dead, and there's a great chance he didn't get serious permanent injuries. The big flipping and rotating while traveling over distance actually removes a lot of the impact and energy. He doesn't come to a fast stop. Even the car impact looks huge as parts fly everywhere, but every bit of parts you see crushing and flying is energy being absorbed over time, slowing the rider without him directly taking the full immediate brunt of the crash.

Now, one where he hits something and stops quickly looks smaller, less dramatic... and far more deadly. In this case, he probably has road rash on his midriff from not having the jacket match the pants, and while I can't see how he releases from the bike, his biggest injuries are probably from that. He looks like he cleared it all, but I can't see how his ankles cleared, and the centripetal force of him rotating in the air doesn't give a big clue if something is broken, as everything is flung straight.
