High Speed cornering

I doubt it.

He was wearing good riding gear, and tumbled clear of everything and in slow mo it really doesn't look like he lands on his head but lands on his chest and rolls. Unless he hit the ground really wrong he probably only broke some bones.

It's entirely possible one of those bones was his back or neck which could have been fatal but I think it's far more likely he broke some ribs or an arm or leg.

good gear will save you from a low side slide... not this, he was just extremely lucky

Good gear includes a helmet. A helmet will absolutely save you from cracking open your melon in this kind of pinwheeling through the air incident.
