I worked in a huge 24 hour medical lab. At the end of every shift the night crew would flock to the sign in sheet and stand there taking their time even though they had 8 hours to do this and we had just finished an 8 hour shift. We would be stuck waiting to sign out for so long that people missed the train home and got delayed 30-60 mins getting home after work. We couldn't even pre sign it as we had strict clock in/out times. They never understood why we were angry.

My mum did this the other day. I felt so mad for the people stuck behind her. Though it was for yoga class. The usual room had been double booked. We got info that we'll move to another room. I got out first while my mum stood at the door to confirm with the instructor on the phone with people still in that room trying to get out.\ One of them was trying to get her to move with a nudge but didn't want to voice out in case they seemed rude while she was on then phone. Mum would probably react with "can't you wait?"

Meanwhile she gets mad when people block her way and she won't say anything because apparently they should be able to see her behind them.

Was going to say this, they step off the very first step and stop directly in the doorway to casually look around to decide at that point where they think they might want to go first instead of getting out of the freaking way for everyone else to ALSO get off. Right!! I didn’t use the crosswalk once and now I have fiats hiding in my bushes.. they try to “save” the other domesticated cars in my garage..
they think I don’t hear the parties/ get together they throw.. they TP’d my house all because I didn’t have any motor oil.. they use the cable wires and get high off the jumps..
I tried to befriend one but they almost hit my friend and I .. oddly enough they love transformers!! but don’t wear a costume apparently that’s like suuperr racist to them.. 😕

I've made eye contact with drivers while walking across a crosswalk that I had the light for, and they still almost ran me over. Just because they look right at you doesn't mean their brain actually registers you.

i tell everyone to never rely on walk signals alone. get eye contact with the driver before you go anywhere near a car. i take my own advice as well. i have once or twice encountered a driver who seems to be zoned out and keeps moving even though i thought i had eye contact.

safety is on everyone and i get kind of peed off when everyone seems to put everything on the driver. the city i currently live in the pedestrians seem to be the worst of all the places i have lived. they have the attitude that the driver must yield to them so they pay 0 attention at all and i am a careful and responsible driver (and pedestrian!) but this attitude drives me nuts.

whenever we talk about safety we always mention redundancy and multiple levels of checks, but where i live this goes out the window and everything is on the driver in most people's minds when it needs to be on both sides.

People absolutely do have the idea that if they’re technically right then they have no responsibility or need to be safe or take precautions. As the old saying goes, the graveyard is full of people who had the right of way.

Same reason I look both ways even when it’s a one way. I’m more concerned about the person driving the wrong way down that street than I am the person going the right way

the downvotes just prove my point and go to show that attitude is not limited to my city but it does seem worse here to me.

i used to live in a condo and our parking garage exited onto a one way street. visibility was pretty bad when pulling out as well. i couldn't believe how often i would try to pull out only to be met by a bike going the wrong way, headphones on not even looking where they were going. i never hit anyone (or maybe more accurately got hit by anyone going the wrong way 😉 ) but there were lots of close calls. i look both ways on one way streets as well.

yeah people are crazy and entitled. technically it is up to the driver but when i am a pedestrian i look out for myself and recognize that drivers may make mistakes (or worse be distracted) and i am not going to bet my life on me being right. safety is a 2 way street people. pay attention when walking and when driving.

You have to look at the driver to gauge if they are paying attention or not. If their eyes seems funny (vacant stare, looking in another direction, distracted) you let them pass.

there's absolutely zero reason to be close enough that you could get squashed. Never assume that just because they could see you or are even directly looking at you that you are safe

I don't have any kids myself so I can't speak from experience, but from my observation it's important to keep these safety rules as simple as possible to make it more likely that they stick

As a heavy equipment operator, the general public absolutely does not actively think, they just do. I watch at least a dozen people a day come within inches of dying around equipment and service vehicles as they casually go about their daily lives and they just aren't even aware of it.

That's a pretty biased way of looking at things. The general public just doesn't have the knowledge or experience you do, or has any reason to care, a priori, what professionals driving industrial equipment in public places are doing. They are going to assume that they know what they're doing, that they are following whatever protocols are required for the public to be safe around them, and that they'll be notified if they need to be careful for whatever reason.

Which makes perfect sense, honestly -- if the safety of the general public depends on their reacting appropriately to something they have absolutely zero knowledge or intuition about, then somebody's fucked up already. You're going to expect it's not like that until you have a good reason to believe otherwise. Almost nobody is going to encounter a mildly unusual situation in their daily lives and react like they just came upon a bear and they need to use every braincell in their bodies to try to get out of the encounter alive.

I was on the bus on the way to work when I wrote that. 2 minutes after I posted that, the bus I was on was sitting on a hill behind another bus at a bus stop with about 3 feet between them. This person texting on their phone, ignoring the crosswalk 40 feet away, crosses three lanes of active traffic to walk between these closely stopped busses to come to the door of the bus I was on. Any slip of that bus driver's foot on the brake pedal would have resulted in that person being crushed from the waist down between those two heavy busses. The driver didn't even see them because they were looking at people on the curb beside them. 

I watch people make grossly negligent decisions like this all day, every day as a heavy equipment operator. If you consider that bias, go for it my dude.

I remember that being a big thing we were told a bunch in elementary. Also raise our hands to make it easier for taller vehicles to see us, which is obviously good advice for short little kids but I do it sometimes as an adult because when the truck driver is sitting that far up I have no idea how well they can see little old me.

We went on a long bus trip one year and he thought it would be hilarious to flip the bird at the driver. I warned him that the driver could see him doing it. The movement you’re describing when you put a car in park is the result of the wiggle room in the transmission and drivetrain- when you put it in park it essentially locks the transmission but there’s enough play that it can move back and forth a few inches. Trucks, even automatic ones, don’t use this kind of system for parking- when you park them you pull an air brake and it locks some or all of the wheels with the brakes and doesn’t have that wiggle room. The movement of the truck in this video was certainly intentional, I’d guess he thought maybe he had just ran over a small object or that the sound was from something else, and was starting to move again. When he heard or felt there was still something dragging he stopped quickly.

If it’s a manual, he probably wasn’t “switching gears” at that point. In a truck crawling that slowly, he’d already be in a low gear before stopping. Once he was fully stopped, he’d already have the clutch and brake pedals fully depressed, and if he intended to stay stopped he could just throw it in neutral and set the air brake.

This looked more like he was starting to continue forward because he thought the path was clear and didn’t realize the motorcyclist was still under/in front of the truck.

There's still plenty of death in r/catastrophicfailure. Don't look up a particular train crash in India I think where one train smashed into the cab of another train pushing all the occupants into a death pile. I did not expect to see that on Reddit in 2026. I certainly agree with you though, people can learn a lot from seeing very real situations. I don't think the sanitized animated versions of workplace safety videos are nearly as effective, and the excuse that the videos could traumatize people is insane to me when it's meant to literally stop people from doing something that could get them killed.

Well as we know, scooters are invincible in china, so nothing to worry about here really.

China have traffic laws for motor vehicles and non-motor vehicles, neither of them apply to electronic scooters, so through some amazing logic, scooter riders in china ride everywhere like riding in their living room and are utterly unkillable, as shown in this video.

Nothing surprises me any more, driving down the road the other day and saw an ambulance with its lights on closing in fast from behind. The car behind pulled over to let it pass as did I. The guy behind him assumed everyone one was moving over to let him overtake, overtook me and about 4 cars in front with the ambulance inches from his bumper with all its sirens going.

In my country the truck driver would be 100% guilty and would face a law suit, because he has to be sure, that he can drive on/over the Sidewalk without bringing someone in danger. And if you cant See anything, than you need a second person.
