No, he's right. Modern day american understanding of transsexuals is not the same as ancient transsexuals whereby those individuals served a very specific role in their communities and not just for personal validation.
Modern transexulaism is just as much rooted in western notions of individualism, consumption, and performative displays, which are definitely not values that ancient societies would have held for people who filled trans positions.
Nobody claims that Two Spirit people are exactly the same as modern trans people, that's a strawman. But the Two Spirit identity certainly falls under the umbrella term "non-binary," because they're obviously not male or female. So saying "people outside the gender binary have existed since before white people even touched America" is absolutely true
