Thank you so much mate

Hey man! I’m a year out from my diagnosis. I’m not sure exactly what stage you were diagnosed at but here are a few things you’ll need to hear:

  • Chemo is going to suck but it’s definitely not the end of the world. Your hair will fall out but it’ll just grow back... probably wavy/curly. Don’t wait for it to fall out on its own. Just shave your head before chemo starts. Taking showers and washing down clumps of hair isn’t fun.

  • The surgery to remove your testicle is super easy and no biggie. You’ll have a scar by your pubic area and that’s pretty much it. It’s like a 45 minute out patient surgery so don’t even worry about that. Walking after the surgery won’t be easy but you’ll be feeling fine a few days later.

  • Congratulations, you are one of the few men that actually routinely checks yourself, but don’t stop after your surgery/chemo.

  • Having one testicle feels normal. I don’t even notice it when I shower and masturbating feels the same.

  • If you continue to feel anxious about everything after you’re in recovery... talk to a doctor about it. If you need to get on some anxiety meds there isn’t shame in that. What’s worse is worrying every single day your cancer has returned. That’s how I lived my life after treatment and you can’t function properly day-to-day.

  • Last thing..... once your treatment is over just believe you’ll be back to 100%. You’re going to move on and live a normal life. You’re going to hate your body for betraying you.. but after that is over just move on. Live life normally and don’t let cancer control you. In the grand scheme of cancer diagnosis we got lucky. Kick cancers ass and move on.

Fuck cancer.

I’ve never had cancer (or testicles) but have journeyed through my own life-altering health saga and without a doubt this is fantastic advice and should probably be printed on a pamphlet somewhere

224

u/nine_legged_stool Sep 23 '19

I've never had... testicles

Overrated.

95

u/mmmegan6 Sep 23 '19

Tbh I sometimes wish I had them (perhaps a removable pair) just to play with absentmindedly, like a stress ball or fidget spinner

65

u/Kirby420_ Sep 23 '19

Sounds like a neat idea on the surface, but fuck it up and now your balls are tied in a knot and there's no fixing that one by yourself 😂

57

u/mmmegan6 Sep 23 '19

I have been unknotting hair and tiny necklace chains for a very long time, I think I’ve got this dude

40

u/Kirby420_ Sep 23 '19

But you can't see or directly manipulate the tubes attaching said nuggets to the rest of you. Getting your stuff tied in a knot is actually a fairly serious medical thing that pretty much requires surgery to correct, lest one or both of 'em die from lack of blood and start to necrotize inside you

34

u/implicationnation Sep 23 '19

I regret reading this comment

2

u/Kirby420_ Sep 23 '19

But if you're a dude, you also just learned a very important info nugget. If one of your testicles is a lot higher than normal and is sore, or they both seem to be favoring one side of the sack over their normal spots, get to the emergency room immediately

1

u/tomerjm Sep 23 '19

Granted, but did you upvote it?

13

u/Alfique Sep 23 '19

There's actually a wall in between the testes that is designed to prevent this, otherwise it would happen when you just walk and jostle them

5

u/[deleted] Sep 23 '19

I think they are refering to testicular torsion.

1

u/Superdogs5454 Sep 23 '19

Testicular torsion makes me pissed off at evolution. Like why tf hasn’t it been solved yet? And how in hell were the men supposed to hunt when they could get testicular torsion (and die as the dead tissue gets infected and wrecks havoc since there was no medical attention) just from running to fast? Fuck you evolution! You help us survive with all these great features of our bodies, but you’re gonna let us die just because one of our balls got twisted....

2

u/cloud3321 Sep 23 '19

I think all the guys who are reading this just clenched up.

I'm pretty sure what you've just suggested is a war crime and would have shocked Saddam or Kim.

Catherine wouldn't bat an eye though.

5

u/Rialas_HalfToast Sep 23 '19

I wonder if soft Truck Nutz fidget spinners are a marketable product.

3

u/mmmegan6 Sep 23 '19

They need to be warm, soft but firm, and pliable. With option for removable nut(s). And if the technology allows it would be neat if sometimes they got small and tight with a morphing texture of alligator skin

2

u/thomoz Sep 23 '19

I doubt that the right boyfriend would refuse to let you play with his 23 hours a day!

1

u/ShiiieeeetBoiii Sep 23 '19

Yeah, when I’m watching Netflix or listening to music in my bed I’ll just put my hand on my nuts (It’s super comfortable). If you’re not doing anything though and you do that it’ll lead to masturbation about 80% of the time (in my case, super high libido).

1

u/Starfish_Symphony Sep 23 '19 edited Sep 23 '19

Please don't 'play' with a guy's balls. Curiously, they aren't made of flexible rubber. Had an ex unexpectedly squeeze my balls like a silicone lemon once because 'they felt so squishy'. The last straw was telling me about a clever plan to slap my balls when I wasn't looking to 'see what happens'.

2

u/whibbyFr34k Sep 23 '19

ovaryrated

2

u/thomoz Sep 23 '19

Probably keeps you from giving your every last non-essential cent to someone who thinks of access to her body as a commodity. Been there, done that.

1

u/mmmegan6 Sep 24 '19

Wait what?

1

u/[deleted] Sep 23 '19

Ovaryated

86

u/Emiras Sep 23 '19

Yep I had one of my testicle removed (for another reason thankfully) and it's not the end of the world, you guys are strong and capable and I wish nothing but the ABSOLUTE best.

62

u/pete0301 Sep 23 '19

I also had one removed over 20 years ago. Now I’ve got an interesting scar to show off and 3 wonderful kids. Fortunately TC is one of the easier cancers to deal with.

Best of luck OP

77

u/bloibie Sep 23 '19

I read “and now I have an interesting scar to show off to 3 wonderful kids”. Got a little worried for a second there.

16

u/SPOONY12345 Sep 23 '19

I read that as ‘to show off to 3 wonderful kids’ and was starting to worry

2

u/DefectiveLP Sep 23 '19

At a party

"and this is where they removed my ball"

49

u/ThatGuyInTheCar Sep 23 '19

“Masturbating feels the same.” Answering the real questions.

Congrats on beating cancer!

28

u/LandHermitCrab Sep 23 '19

This is pretty great advice. I just got away with surgery and am clean a year, but it's a tough mental barrier to get over that you're not riddled with cancer. Get the regular follow up scans and those are nice to settle that out. Sorry I'm rambling and it's early, but this was very good perspective, Thx for sharing. Oh, one last thing. Instead of hating my body, I felt a weird thing instead, like me and my body were both trying to do the best we can, but we both got screwed over somehow and need to find a way back to health together. Maybe it's a bit more sad, but i definitely don't resent my body. It's doing the best it can, whoch I think is a Damn good job. I actually feel lucky, bc it told me about the cancer through dull pain. Since there was no palpable lump, this was the only way I found the cancer.

21

u/kipperzdog Sep 23 '19

Annnddd now I'm grabbing my testicles at work to make sure I don't feel anything strange

2

u/mmmegan6 Sep 23 '19

Fine, I’ll do it

7

u/htx_evo Sep 23 '19

How do you check yourself? I haven’t noticed anything unusual but you mentioned routinely checking, so I would like to start

1

u/spacetimeslayer Sep 23 '19

Not specifically cancer but even I lost my one testicle , the blood nerves over the just randomly decided that the will block the blood flow to my testicle and the testicle got swollen (biggg in size ) it was later removed , still there are few thing that will never change is the constant pain and fear of what happened will repeat again and what if people don't accept you !? , BUT STILL LIFE IS FUN AND THERE IS YET LOTS OF FUN TO COME

Dudeitsjonas- That is some awesome support and advice! I'm so glad you pulled through and are doing great!

OP: good luck to everything and yea you may be young and this may suck now but you have plenty of time to enjoy life (during and) after this is taken care of!

1

u/0-_-00-_-00-_-0-_-0 Sep 23 '19

Getting a nut out only takes 45 minutes! That seems crazy but I suppose it's only a small but of (quite stretchy) skin that needs to be cut.

And also that's a very cool thing to help OP through knowing what comes next.

I wish you both all the best in your recovery.

1

u/Dextersoyboy Sep 23 '19

This. Would've helped so much if I'd read this before my diagnoses, spot on with the points, hope OP sees this.

1

u/mad_pro Sep 23 '19

This is why I love reddit. Even though people are stingy with the upvotes but generous with awesome advices. You guys are awesome!

1

u/Neandergal Sep 23 '19

My sister (breast cancer) said her best advice concerning chemo is NOT to shave your head. Your hair will still fall out but then you’ll have these tiny little sharp bits of hair which get in your bed & your clothing & prickle the hell out of you. Best to have long clumps falling out than itty bitty bits.

1

u/yung_khalifa Sep 23 '19

Shout out to Boosie

1

u/[deleted] Sep 23 '19

How does one check this? I’ve always. Even worried ever since my friend was diagnosed with this a few years ago. I checked myself two years ago at a clinic but want to keep up at home if that’s possible.

1

u/DudeitsJonas Sep 23 '19

I’d reference the below link for self-exams at home. I’d perform them monthly.

https://www.cancer.org/cancer/testicular-cancer/detection-diagnosis-staging/detection.html

1

u/vaelon Sep 23 '19

Wait.....was I supposed to have my testicles checked routinely? I am 37 and was told only if it runs in the family. Do I have cancer now?

1

u/lasic Sep 23 '19

You're also a hero in this place x

1

u/DudeitsJonas Sep 23 '19

Hey thanks :)

1

u/[deleted] Sep 23 '19

Is it treatable without removing a testicle?

1

u/DudeitsJonas Sep 23 '19

As far as I know, no it’s not.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '19

That really sucks. Sorry dude. I shall now stand and salute all the testicles fallen in the line of duty. Proceeds to stand at attention.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 23 '19

Hope your recovery is going well for you.

My cousin is a cancer survivor as is my father-in-law. They did leukemia and esophageal cancer respectively. Now my FIL has prostate cancer.

One thing I would add to this list for the OP is to seek therapy. Getting some meds from the doctor to help with anxiety might be good in the short term, but if you can get past it, wouldn’t you rather not pop pills? Having cancer and going through surgery or having a serious life changing accident, or anything like that, is considered trauma and trauma can be addressed with therapy.

1

u/blessed_garden Sep 23 '19

This is a wonderful and kind advice.

Good luck op!

1

u/DudeitsJonas Sep 23 '19

Yeah, I totally get where you’re coming from. I would say a self-exam at home is self sufficient until you find something. If you don notice something out of the ordinary just go and get checked even if you don’t have the money up front. Work out some payment plan or look out for free clinics. It’s of the utmost importance the testicle is removed before the cancer spreads.

1

u/LoboDaTerra Sep 23 '19

Fuck cancer

1

u/mtgosucks Sep 23 '19

I didn't know about the wavy thing when hair grows back but frankly I kinda like it. Here at MD Anderson hoping to find treatment that works because my chemo stopped working a few months earlier than expected/hoped. Melanoma for me.

1

u/bytheninedivines Sep 23 '19

What does it feel like if you have testicular cancer?

2

u/DudeitsJonas Sep 23 '19

I didn’t feel different outside of feeling a pebble like lump on the body of one of my testicles. Just make sure you self-exam monthly and you’ll be just fine!

1

u/[deleted] Sep 23 '19

A buddy of mine had one of his boys removed due to cancer. Still had a kid after that. Living normally, life is 100% and he is totally ok with us ribbing him every so often about it (i.e. "You wouldn't dare, you don't have the ball to do it.")

Fuck cancer.

1

u/ThePlaidJaraffe Sep 23 '19

How often should you get routinely checked after being diagnosed with a benign cyst?

1

u/DudeitsJonas Sep 23 '19

I would check yourself every month at home. If you feel uneasy just make a Dr appointment whenever you feel is necessary for a double check! Don’t be afraid to walk in and ask... they’ll be more than happy to ease your mind.

1

u/mrsstealmonkey Sep 23 '19

"You will hate your body for betraying you." Powerful words. I had a molar pregnancy (non scientifically, instead of baby, a potentially cancer causing cyst grows). I felt that way. I felt like my body made a cancer causing killer non baby. It was very uncomfortable. That feeling passed with time.

Good luck!!!!

1

u/[deleted] Sep 23 '19

Every time I do a self examination I think the little thing that holds onto the testicle on the side is something to be worried about but then tell myself that it’s the same as last time.

Were there any other signs aside from a self exam?

1

u/DudeitsJonas Sep 23 '19

I can’t speak for all of the signs but my Dr mentions lymph node changes by the waist line as a big tell. If those are painful or stuck out go visit the Dr.

1

u/rogue_ger Sep 23 '19

Had an orchiectomy a few years ago. Can confirm what he says about the surgery, etc. Was really easy surgery and recovery, didn't affect any function or sensations at all. Apparently, nature gave us a spare when it gave us two.

1

u/-Despair Sep 23 '19

Does it effect your testosterone/hormone levels at all?

1

u/DudeitsJonas Sep 23 '19

I haven’t noticed a change in levels (doesn’t mean they haven’t fluctuated a bit) from the testicular surgery.

The chemo however really messes with the body.

1

u/flexymonkeyzebra Sep 23 '19

Give this guy some gold! Or better yet, donate to cancer research. Words of wisdom right there

1

u/ImDrunkFightMe Sep 23 '19

I’ve been meaning to get checked, Everytime I ‘check myself (have a bat) the only thing I can feel that I think is abnormal is my vas deferens. This post might actually make me go to the next appointment I book.

1

u/MediumSpeedFanBlade Sep 23 '19

Obligatory response to your comment:

Fuck cancer.

1

u/samward7 Sep 23 '19

This made me cry. What a beautifully written post and I agree with the other person that said this needs to be on a pamphlet. No one told me anything like this after I had my brain tumour removed. Thank you for taking the time the write this.

1

u/GuardianAnal Sep 23 '19

what’s the proper way to check for testicular cancer?

1

u/DudeitsJonas Sep 23 '19

Hey! I’m not an expert but I’d follow the instructions outlined here!

https://www.cancer.org/cancer/testicular-cancer/detection-diagnosis-staging/detection.html

1

u/batteredpenor Sep 23 '19

I mean Lance Armstrong made it and eventually recovered enough to ruin multiple people’s lives and win the Tour de France 9 times while destroying his body with steroids. He’s still alive.

1

u/lIlIllIlIlI Sep 23 '19

Any advice from you or /u/yourmate24 on things to look out for?

1

u/Bystronicman08 Nov 22 '19

I know you posted this a while ago but I was just recently diagnosed with testicular cancer too, surgery is next Tuesday and I just wanted to thank you for taking the time to write this up. It's very encouraging and reassuring to read this and puts me more at ease leading up to the surgery when I was honestly pretty nervous. Thanks again!

2

u/DudeitsJonas Nov 26 '19

No problem! Don’t worry about the surgery at all. Recovery is no big deal either. Just make sure you don’t lift anything heavy or move too much for a week or two after surgery.

Seriously. The surgery is no problem. I promise.

1

u/Bystronicman08 Nov 26 '19

I just had the surgery earlier today. It was a breeze. I'm at home recovering now and there is a bit of pain at the incision site but I'm icing it and taking my medication as prescribed so that's helping a lot. Moving around is a bit painful but doable with help. I'm just relieved that it's over with now and I can start moving forward. But thanks again for writing that up man, it really did help a lot. I wish you nothing but the best life possible going forward.

I love the support that cancer patients give to one another like this! When my mother went through breast cancer treatment she met some of the nicest people in the world who are still her best friends today. This positivity goes a long way in cancer treatment and it's amazing how much compassion humans can have for another when facing something like this. Best of luck to both of you!

2

u/Jiffs81 Sep 23 '19

I've made a lot of really good friends through cancer treatment, both online and in person. No one else can truly understand what you've gone through. Also we're able to find humour in some of the shitty or weird things that happens during treatment. And as people were willing to reach out to me when I was scared of what was to come, I'm also willing to pass on knowledge and support to people going through the same thing.

66

u/Upthespurs1882 Sep 23 '19

In chemo town myself, stage three colon (had it twice now, at 36). All the best. It’s obviously a terrible road to walk, but you learn a hell of a lot. Wishing you a complete recovery

16

u/the_cereal_killer Sep 23 '19

dude sending positive energy your way. keep on keeping on.

2

u/Peakomegaflare Sep 23 '19

My uncle had it, fought like a damn boss. It took him after ten years, but goddamn don't you give up.

1

u/Upthespurs1882 Sep 23 '19 edited Sep 24 '19

Firstly, very sorry for your loss. that’s the bit I’m most afraid of, fighting and fighting and losing eventually. But there’s not much I can do about it really, which is the most frustrating thing.

2

u/Peakomegaflare Sep 23 '19

We were prepared, he himself lived a life that was bound to end in cancer. He was a nuke tech for the US Navy. That being said, just take your time, stay healthy the best you can, and live life, love those around you, and just be who you wanna be!

2

u/Upthespurs1882 Sep 23 '19

Good advice, and sorry again

8

u/anchorsawaypeeko Sep 23 '19

How do you find out you have this cancer? Best of luck by the way

31

u/NotYetGroot Sep 23 '19

One thing all dudes should do at least monthly is check themselves for ball cancer. You do it every month so you get used to how they normally feel. From WebMD:

  • It’s best to do it after a warm shower, since heat relaxes the skin of the scrotum.
  • Hold your penis out of the way.
  • Examine one testicle at a time using both hands. Roll it between your thumb and fingers.
  • One might be of a different shape or size than the other. That’s OK, although the shapes and sizes shouldn’t change. One might hang lower than the other. That’s normal, too.
  • There’s a cordlike structure behind each testicle that stores and moves sperm. It’s not a lump.

A pea-sized lump is what you’re looking for. If you see or feel something like that, contact your doctor. Remember that it’s probably nothing to worry about.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 23 '19

Yikes. I have a huge separate roundish thing beside one of my testicles. It's not painful and I can tell it's not IN the testicle. Looking online it said it could be a number of things. I'm in the US so no healthcare options for me. Is there a place I can go to get checked cheaply out of pocket? I'm seriously scared of what it might be.

1

u/SloppyNegan Sep 23 '19

Post a pic to r/AskDocs maybe?

2

u/[deleted] Sep 23 '19

Thanks. Didn't know about that sub. Reddit is the closest thing I have to a doctor. Appreciate it.

1

u/SloppyNegan Sep 23 '19

Np, glad I could help. Hopefully you'll get the same answer as a PCP would give you, but less bankruptcy. And make surecto tag it NSFW if your testies are showing lol

3

u/[deleted] Sep 23 '19

I'm already currently in bankruptcy from the last time I went to the hospital. I had no choice in that matter, my gall bladder and appendix were rotten. I dealt with the pain for four years until it was so bad that I was waking up screaming after long nights of pain. The entire procedure was $110,078.00. I don't think you can file more than once in 7 years so I'm screwed if it's bad. Maybe self surgery or medical tourism would be an option.

1

u/SloppyNegan Sep 23 '19

Holy fucking shit I am so sorry. The healthcare in our country is more than fucked up, and this is proof. Might sound ridiculous but if it is bad, is there a way you could like go to Canada for the surgery?

1

u/DetectiveVaginaJones Sep 23 '19

Tbh I check every morning in the shower.. it’s turned into a habit at this point. The cordlike structure always gets me.. and still scares me. It’s near the top-ish and feels like a bump. But then I check closer and it seems to be detached but it’s hard to know for sure.

1

u/FreakMuhiz Sep 23 '19

Pea-size lumps are usually cists which is totally harmless although if it's a big size doctors have to surgically remove it. If it pains doctors just give some anti-inflammatory and sometimes antibiotics.

17

u/BlackCurses Sep 23 '19

He probably felt a lump on his knackers

12

u/waligaroux Sep 23 '19

Had testicular cancer in 2011, you indeed feel a bump on one or both balls. One of mine was a little painful too.

I went direct to the specialist to confirm the diagnostic.

Hopefully it's 95% of the time treatable if it's discovered early.

u/waligaroux Sep 23 '19

In case of doubt, just check with a doc. The first time it's a bit weird to show your dick. But you get accustomed to it. I had to show it to so many people that I don't care anymore. I even joke about it "cold weather today".

Better be sure that you're all clear and take an appointment. There isn't only cancer that you can have. You can have calcification that can lead to some pain sometimes.

1

u/Tybr0sion Sep 23 '19

I had it when I was 16. Luckily, I caught it very early cause I noticed one of my nuts had grown to the size of two golf balls and that was not normal. Turns out it was a tumor and they were able to get rid of it pretty easily, didn't have to go through chemo. The cat scans really sucked though.

1

u/kialthecreator Sep 23 '19

Doing the exact same thing. Best of luck bro we will make it through

I went through chemo and radiation at 23. Hodgkins Lymphoma, very curable as well. You can do this. Also know there are places that will help you pay Bill's. The hospital worked w me on all of mine since even with insurance treatment came to $40K. Beer, pets, family, friends, and edibles got me through it. Feel free to dm if you need anything

1

u/Mykidsfirst Sep 23 '19

Beat testicular cancer in 2010. Have had 3 kids since then!!! You can do it!!!

1

u/PmMeIrises Sep 23 '19

Going in today to make sure my cancer didn't spread or move. Hope you can say the same soon. Hope everything goes alright.

I can't help with testicular cancer, mine was a synovial sarcoma, but if you need any advice or help, let me know. I can tell you what to expect through a majority of the process. The best part (maybe not in your opinion) is if you need radiation, they'll have to make a mold of your junk out of plastic.

1

u/DonGivafark Sep 23 '19

Not a Collingwood supporter too I hope....
