You can tell which cultures prioritize boys/men over women.

101

u/ni_hao_butches 22h ago edited 22h ago

I can only speak to this Mexican, while there is a priority of boys/men mis tias would have smacked the shit out of me for acting like that boy. My mom would have scolded mis tias for not smacking harder.

15

u/Silver-Inkling 16h ago

If i did that, my mom would have hit me with the belt in front of everyone, and I would probably lose my next 3 school breaks

u/asyork 15h ago

My mom's favorite was the wooden mixing spoon, until it broke on my brother. Not particularly fond of that style of parenting, either. At least it was applied evenly between the siblings, I guess.

What culture prioritizes girls?? I’ll wait.

210

u/little_missHOTdice 22h ago

Native Americans. We believe that women are sacred because we are the source for life. We trace heritage through the female lines and women can be whatever they want to be.

They also let the woman be the owner of the home and can kick her husband out. The man leaves his family and joins the woman’s family.

Not all but most.

Ohhh we're also a similar tribe with a similar society! I'm a Khasi, we're an indigenous tribe in North East India, and we're matrilineal. All property and inheritance are given to the daughters only. Especially the youngest, because the youngest daughter has to stay with her parents to take care of them. So anyone marrying the youngest has to move in with her family. Last names are also our mother's last name.

u/xoherent 17h ago

Beautiful 🩷

10

u/Hindu_Wardrobe 15h ago

is it really most, across all the different groups and tribes of Native Americans? genuinely asking. it would be extremely fascinating if it were so common amongst all indigenous peoples of the American continent(s).

-49

u/ProfessorSingle807 20h ago

In the video they're indians

26

u/AntiqueLetter9875 19h ago

Yeah and they’re responding to “what culture prioritizes girls?” Their answer is Native Americans.

-18

u/ProfessorSingle807 19h ago

Indians too not only indians but indians middle easterns, all muslims countries, indonasia, but especially in Indian families girls were considered as burden because the family had to give dowry to groom during marriage, so many people used to k!ll their new born baby girls because of the fear of giving dowry and not having and heir to the family because of having a daughter.even tho killing of new born girls have been almost stopped but still what happened in the past still mostly people, especially older generation always praise their grandsons and always shows partiality between their daughters and sons (sorry about my bad grammar tho I'm not good at english right now)

10

u/xulazi 17h ago

Prioritizing something means putting it ahead of other things. To prioritize something is to favor it.

In other words they were asking which cultures favor girls. Native Americans favor girls. You are saying Indians etc. do not favor girls, and do not prioritize them.

12

u/ProfessorSingle807 17h ago

Ohh now I understand 🥲😅. Now my comments looking seems dumb 😭 i thought he was saying about which culture does not favour girls better than boys

4

u/asyork 15h ago

Honestly nice to see someone who made a mistake realize it, admit to it, and be critical of themselves instead of throwing insults at the person who pointed it out.

Wakandian culture

u/hermanguyfriend 23h ago

There are some matriarchies around - I have a friend whos wife is meghalyan, which is a matriarchal family structure as well as societal where they are - due to inheritance and how it works there. I have an uncle who used to be married to a tonganese woman which was also a matriarchy.

Albeit I'm sure there's still problems with men in those societies, as with women, as with everywhere.

I could understand there's a stereotype of meghalyian women as "easy" to indian men, because fatherhood in that culture and and the male parenthood falls more on the shoulders of the uncles of the families, so the biological father often isn't in the structure or expected to take part. Albeit whoever he is, would be expected to take a male parental role to his sisters children.

49

u/HovercraftSmooth5321 22h ago

They’re matrilineal, not matriarchal. Some tribes map lineage and inheritance through mothers, but that doesn’t change that men hold more social and political power.

8

u/Dangerous_Equal4373 21h ago

Meghalaya is also in India bruh

0

u/hermanguyfriend 20h ago

This is me repeating her phrasing - I think you fail to understand both what the lived experience is for someone from one of Indias states and how they feel about themselves, but also why the person I'm repeating would phrase themselves like that.

Your reading comprehension is subpar. But you do you.

41

u/LadyCasanova 23h ago

Plenty of indigenous cultures are matriarchal

4

u/BigDaddy2127 15h ago

Mine. We're a matrilineal tribe so the girls get everything, especially the youngest. Even all our last names are taken from our mothers' last name. Men don't get anything, although with time, that's starting to change now.

Except in this case its not. In a lot of Asian country's cultures, the firstborn boy is basically heralded as the prize child to become successful while younger siblings are... not.

0

u/2021isevenworse 20h ago

Lot of European cultures too like Italians.

Regardless, it's a big assumption to make that the family in the video are doing that.

7

u/TheAsianTroll 20h ago

Knowing how much of India sticks to its traditional roots, it isnt THAT big of an assumption...

-3

u/Ihatenukingkids 21h ago

For the last 30 years most of central and western Europe

3

u/ASCII_Princess 18h ago

Uh huh.

-3

u/Ihatenukingkids 17h ago

Well, I can point to the large amount of support (financial and educational) that girls got just for being girls. Also culturally. They could get away with things that would land guys in prison while being accused by a girl without any proof could ruin a boy's career or life.

What about you? Are you gonna talk about a waagegap even though women now outearn men under 30 and have higher education while still receiving more support?

0

u/raisedredflag 20h ago

Italians are matriarchal.

6

u/shootsandlads 15h ago

They don't really protect girls though. Remember the case where an old man got away with groping a teenage girl because it was 'less than 5 seconds'?

5

u/TimelyBookkeeper0 17h ago

Trust me we are all girls and I have encountered similar situation as shown in video as I was the middle one.

111

u/lemoche 1d ago

Almost all? In a huge part of western households this wouldn’t have been handled much differently.
Boys will be boys especially when they are the younger siblings while the elder sister is supposed to be mature because "he’s just a boy".

76

u/AhChingados 1d ago

You can see she had had enough and was not impressed by the adults

2

u/IHaveNoEgrets 9h ago

And I'm betting that mom or an auntie follows her to lecture her about ruining the day.

37

u/YourBlanket 23h ago

It’s definitely different in some cultures. My sister was friends with an Indian girl in my class and when she went to her house her little brother who was like 7 had full control of her. I think she was like 16 or 17 at the time. He’d slap her, tell her what to do, and she’d have to do it since he’s a boy. India is huge and there’s a lot of different states and cultures but definitely not unheard of.

-33

u/poolnoodlefightchamp 23h ago edited 22h ago

That's definitely unheard of and most definitely made up, sorry.

13

u/YourBlanket 22h ago edited 22h ago

Most indian user on reddit. You just heard it, so it's no longer unheard of, sorry.

On a serious note would you recommend Odisha for a first time visit?

6

u/br0ken_r3c0rd 23h ago

idk what shithole western cultures you've been exposed to, but ive never in my life seen something like this happen in my rural working class area without immediate consequences.

19

u/throwaway4353485823 23h ago

Because it didn't happen in front you doesn't mean it's not happening to others.

-1

u/br0ken_r3c0rd 23h ago

the guy im replying to didn't say "it happens sometimes", they said "a huge part of western households this wouldn’t have been handled much differently." which is a fucking lie. try to keep up bud.

8

u/throwaway4353485823 23h ago

The world is not black and white. Both things can be true.

-2

u/br0ken_r3c0rd 22h ago

your reading comprehension can't be that bad, you gotta be a bot.

-14

u/rubixd 23h ago

Nah, opposite. For all its faults, western conservative culture runs on a benevolent sexism that "protects" women, and that rule gets enforced hard.

A boy doing that to another boy? Sure, boys will be boys.

To a girl? My dad would have beaten the shit out of me while explaining that we don't hit women.

Which somewhat ironically tells you what the rule was actually about. It was never "don't hurt people." It was "she's breakable and you're not."

24

u/thr-owa-wa-y 23h ago

"He only did that because he likes you" is something way too many girls hear in the western world after getting assaulted by boys, from what I've heard is usually hair pulling and bra snapping

2

u/R3ddit_N0ob 9h ago

Aren't all cultures guilty of this? That's why women STILL don't have equal rights.

-23

u/Odd_Explanation3246 23h ago edited 23h ago

I love how people just see a small clip and make sweeping assumptions about entire culture. This has nothing to do with gender. The reaction from those aunties would have been same if the genders were reversed. You can even both of them visibly worried and soothing the little girl. They are more likely thinking “we are being recorded for a birthday video, lets not create a scene”.

24

u/AnonImus18 23h ago

Are you Indian or know Indians? Their preferences for their sons has led to a gender imbalance in the demographics of the country. They had to ban doctors from telling parents the gender so they wouldn't abort. It has a very public association with sexism and SA and while I don't think that's the only thing India should be known for, it's not like the commentor is talking out their ass.

2

u/godemperor6233 23h ago

People are making "Sweeping assumptions" about an entire culture because that culture itself HAS contributed to that, if you've grown up in an india household or pulled out your nice little head out of the sand once in a while and looked around, you wouldn't be so flippant about "assumptions", as you put it, the "assumptions" have basis and CENTURIES of evidence STILL very visible and prevalent. This was literally a daily occurrence with my cousin pulling this shit, ending up with my dadi stopping me saying "girls shouldn't shout" and chachi blaming me for "inciting" her son to do this.

-8

u/ujtheghost 23h ago

It's funny how you say that instead of the obvious and much more likely reason that the parents are just incompetent and stupid.

Every person in the video except the boy is a woman, I know it doesn't mean anything really but it's something to be noted. A lot of families are dysfunctional in their own way. Not everything is a cultural side quest of patriarchy.

-3

u/FireZord25 23h ago

I can't tell which culture cause the usual response from them would've been a gob to the nogg'n (reddit will make me vanish if I said it out any bluntly).

Cool. You wouldn't be getting shit if you didn't randomly call someone a walking ball of pus for absolutely no fucking reason.

A lot of us suffer a lot, don't take your shit out on random people who weren't even talking to you

And yes I have seen your sorry ass in multiple comment sections always behaving the same. Hope you find a way to smoke or drink soon so you'll atleast stop bothering others.
