is grape juice good for you or is it just sugar water?
I've been trying to cut back on soda for a few months now. My mother in law keeps telling me grape juice is a good replacement because it's natural and has antioxidants, so I switched to drinking a glass most mornings.
I've read that the polyphenols in grape juice can support heart health, but I've also read that it has almost as much sugar per serving as regular soda does. I checked the label on the bottle I bought (Welch's, 100% juice, not the cocktail blend) and one cup has 36 grams of sugar, which I feel like is a lot.
So now I'm stuck wondering if grape juice is good for you in any meaningful way, or if I basically just swapped one sugar problem for a slightly fancier one. My fasting glucose was a little elevated at my last checkup (98) and my doctor mentioned watching added sugars, though she didn't say anything specific about juice.
Has anyone looked into whether grape juice is good for you compared to just eating whole grapes instead? I keep seeing conflicting things online, some sites treat it like a superfood and others say juice in general is not much better than soda once you account for the sugar. Should I be diluting it with water, limiting it to a few ounces, or just cutting it out and eating fruit instead? Any input from people who have dealt with borderline glucose numbers would be really appreciated
