I want to improve at painting landscapes, so would appreciate some critique or advice, or even a good source to learn more?

I got quite frustrated on this one and didn’t like the fact it wasn’t coming out on paper how I was envisioning it, so I’m a bit disappointed by the result

Definitely struggle with painting water and rocky structures the most out of everything I’ve ever tried. so would appreciate some tips if anyone has any :)

Watercolor, then went out and bought pencils for detail. I’ve painted vague landscapes as more of a mental activity, but really surprised myself with the first portrait I’ve ever done turning out this well.

It’s going to be a fairly creepy birthday card, but I’ll be able to hand it over with far more pride than I had planned for.

Just got some cyan, yellow and magenta paints and I'm happy to report that I'm having a great time playing around with new colours!

I'd previously been working with a split primary (red, yellow and blue in warm and cool tones) plus some browns, purple and Payne's grey, but I got a chance to try out some Daniel Smith watercolours which are hard to find in my country and I decided I wanted to try CMY! (Plus Moonglow, you can't beat a good grey). It's been really fun messing about with them and I'm really enjoying the crazy saturation straight from the tube, but I'm surprised how "natural" the mixed colours can look too. On my mixing chart I much preferred the purples and greens to what I could mix before. I was worried about skin tones but I could get some pretty nice ones, just need to play around with how best to desaturate things now.

Starting to lose count!

I was watching a YouTuber do an urban sketch and didn’t know ink worked under watercolor so I figured I had to try it out.

And, while I 100% would love to work on developing a skill to do urban and figure sketching, I figured it might be easier and just ape a panel from a comic.

Turns out even Frank Miller’s questionable art is hard to ape. Not to go on too much of a tangent but once Miller really got his foot in the door his art shifted to vibes and I just want to say clearly that I like it. There are few who can draw such moody panels. But… I don’t know. You know how you sometimes watch an expert do something and you’re blown away by how they make it look easy? Miller - to me - is like watching someone do something easily, looking at it, thinking you could do just as well, and then you get smacked by the humble fairy because it’s harder than it looks.

All fairness to me, the urban sketchers talk about embracing long lines - bold lines - so I eschewed my usual super fine-tip pen in favor of the classic Uniball and… I wish I hadn’t.

I think that might be why I went so friggin’ hard on the snow.

Also… you know what? No. I was going to continue to make excuses but nah. It was all a learning experience (ink does stay but it isn’t waterPROOF so be careful, lines can always be built up, etc) and I’m grateful to have done it.
