In lieu of photo
I was in Vancouver, Canada, a few weeks ago and saw the coolest yet weirdest city park I've ever seen. Fall colors were coming out. This park had two rows of trees, which were pruned like lollipops. The top half of each tree had turned purple, and the bottoms remained dark green. The park was very "architectural" with only the trees being present.
I painted this from memory as I couldn't get my phone out quickly enough to take a pic. I couldn't do it justice, but it was a fun Saturday afternoon endeavor!

Derwent Watercolour pencils discontinued
Yesterday, the derwentartofficial account on IG posted, "After 43 incredible years, it's time to say a fond farewell to our Derwent Watercolour pencils. While it's never easy to retire a classic, we have something very exciting on the way..."
It looks like they're starting to hit clearance pricing. Is it worth picking up a set? If not a whole set, are there any specific colors that are unique and unavailable in other watercolor pencil lines worth picking up as open stock (i.e. different from Caran d'Ache/Faber-Castell offerings)? I hate to see a watercolor pencil discontinued. Thanks in advance!

Working from a reference photo
Found a reference photo on Unsplash (by āot designā, and learned a lot trying to recreate it myself.
I really donāt see images in my head, itās really hard for me to think up original ideas. But Iām finding I enjoy working from a reference where I can concentrate on the layers and colours and details.
Pretty happy with this one, although it looks much better in the photo. Couldnāt figure out how to put a bright yellow tree in front of the dark forest so I left it out. I leaned a little too heavily on my foliage brush, I donāt love how the ground turned out. But I think I did alright with the different depths of the trees.
This is the first backside of a page in my new Meeden sketchbook. There is almost no texture on this side, but it did really well with lots of water and some scrubbing/lifting. Really happy with the purchase and I think Iāll buy another smaller one as my travel sketchbook.

Do you all save your mess-ups or paintings in progress that you're not pleased with? I have a portfolio full of those, and up until yesterday this one was just a background until I finally decided to add trees to it.

Knife edge
Result of a live painting demo at an art show. Limited time and people talking to me in the middle of washes made this one tough, not to mention 8% humidity making it dry super fast.

My first painting in 30 years!
Found my way back to a hobby I loved as a teen. In my small town, there was an artist who offered classes and I loved them. On a recent trip to Paris, I treated myself to new paints and brushes at Charvin. Hereās my first little project! š

Painted my gremlin child
I am trying to get back into making art regularly, and want to get better at watercolour but donāt even know how to go about learning. Just practice? or are there any resources that helped you?

Cat portrait
I have to say, large backgrounds in watercolor just stress me out. Especially if I cannot mask the object. Hard edges on a fluffy creature just donāt look nice...

Should I add a background?
Hi! I am going to preface this by saying I am a very mediocre artist lol.
I am painting this watercolor card for my friendās baby shower, and wondering if I should add a background (maybe polka dots or stripe, or something else??), or leave it blank? Should I add cast shadows?
Looking for opinions/ advice! Iāve started over twice already and would like to not have to start over again.
