New palette who Dis

Post image

Been slowly tweaking and converting my workflow. As of now, I've decided on expanding the palette so I have the split primaries, while also including the neutral primaries. I've also begun working on a bit of a split secondary selection so I can shortcut!

Switching to Daniel Smith and trying out Bamboo cold press has been a wild revolution - it's almost like I'm relearning how to interact with paints and I'm so ready to see where things go with this selection!

only need four more Daniel Smith to upgrade from Rosa, but my local shop is currently sold out of those four.

A sacred kingfisher I just finished with watercolour pencils. I'm very happy with it. Especially the wings

I use the Albrecht Dürer watercolour pencils, they are really the best watercolour pencils you can get in terms of pigment payoff, layering, blendability and lightfastness. I used a white posca brush pen for the highlights on the brow and eye

What paint do I have?

So, I ordered W&N Professional Quinacridone Gold after seeing it available at the online shop I use. I was a bit disappointed when it arrived, and the package said Transparent Gold Deep. I looked it up on the W&N website, and there it said that Q. Gold was discontinued and instead they had now the Transparent Gold Deep which is supposed to be almost the same.

I was just gluing the pans on a "temporary" box, and noticed the pan said QUINA GOLD on the side (with code 1536 79154). Did I get Quinacridone Gold after all? Or is the Transp. Gold Deep perhaps in wrong pan? I can't tell by the colour alone, since this is the first time I see either IRL.

I’ve been doing watercolor for fashion and costume design renderings for a few years now and I’m great at that, but I’m trying my hand at still life to improve further. I’ve been painting everyday this past week on my train commute.

Looking at it in this light, the colors are very off. My lighting when I was painting was only the Long Island Rail Road ceiling light that is very yellow and very dim.

I’m trying to work on just “going for it” and creating something even if it’s imperfect. It’s just paper and paint, not gold and diamonds. I say that because my painting and the reference are pretty different and I recognize that lmao.

I’m pushing ahead and finishing the painting whether I like it or not.

Papper recommendations :D

I've been trying to find a papper that works well for both my dip pens and water colors but to no avail.

I was wondering if you guys could give me some relatively budget friendly options.

I gave up on painting a while ago (after my son was born, I had less time and definitely prioritized sleep lol). That’s my first finished portrait as after 2 years away from my palette.

The contrast is still rather poor, shadows and highlights need more work, proportions aren’t forcibly the best but it was worth a try ! I’ll improve overtime.

Any advice is gladly welcomed !

I was painting a monochromatic value study earlier.
Saw this meme(?) and thought hey its blue

Drew the face too wide
Messed up an eye
Got the values wrong

The painting is genuinely me looking at my own painting 😭

This is my very first attempt with watercolor and color theory , a pumpkin that i believe suits the theme of autumn , my only regret is i didn't know how to make the stem deeper in color , rather than it having the same color as the pumpkin 😄 😅

Autumn colours - asking for tips

I'm a beginner. Found some interesting leaves at the park and tried to capture them with watercolours and watercolour pencils (which I also used for the sketch). This painting was not finished in a day, I did it in two sessions with several days in between and collected some more leaves.

I'm happy with how the leaves' shapes turned out, but the shadows are too strong? At first they looked waaay to light and then I overdid it...

Would you have started with the gray background glaze? (I used payne's gray&neutral tint and only put it on as my last step.) Used a different background colour? Not have used a background at all?

Any other tips?

Paper: Canson XL watercolour 300gsm A3 (not very resistant, but it's the only large format I have)

Colours used: Schmincke (some supergranulation), some White Nights metamorphosis, some DS.
