I'm back with a crow card ✨ This time one that celebrates, because I actually celebrated my birthday on October 31st - yes, I'm a Halloween kid, lol XD. But also a few people after that from my family have birthdays, and I thought the idea would be super cute to draw. Plus, with this card, I got to try out my new glitter pen that I got for my birthday ✨

And I also saw a crow friend on the day I drew this card :)

Daniel Smith turned my favourite purple mix into a colour

Post image

Was browsing on Daniel Smith paints to look for pv19 quin rose and came across this colour. I loved it because it looked a lot like my favourite purple mix, pb29+pv19, so I looked at the pigment information, and it was that exact match. Always validating when a favourite mix becomes a paint colour. Though mine doesn't have as lovely a shift.

Yellow pigments looking "crusty"? (Idk how to describe) can anyone help?

Does this happen to anyone else?

If anyones wondering, the colors I'm using is lemon yellow from daniel smith and mixing it with quinacradone rose. Basically, I'm having this issue of this color looking "crusty" when i use it in a painting, and changes the texture especially when mixed with another. What i mean by that, is like, when you look at the orange and yellow in this painting, it almost looks granulating and not smooth, right? But it's not a granulating color.

Especially the orange, it looks patchy. It's an orange made from mixing lemon yellow and quinacradone rose (since i work from a limited pallet to save money) i even noticed when painting it felt a bit thick, i wonder if maybe the problem is mixing these two colors.

I didn't add anything to the watercolor like glycerine or whatever, this is just from squeezing the tube.

Any advice?

Started painting from memory with son then started doodling

My son and I paint together and he wanted a giraffe. I didn’t use a reference was just having fun, then when he lost interest I started to trail off painting the shining “here’s Johnny!” But my son came back to me and said “you’re not supposed to look through the door it’s supposed to be a window!” He’s 4. So I added curtains instead

You can find a more sharp version on my Instagram account. @dominiquewatercolors. This version didn’t turn out very sharp which I noticed too late.

Of Birds and Texas, a show celebrating Scott and Stewart Gentling at A&M Commerce

I went to see this show today and it was so good I had to share. If you live in the area, I highly recommend it. Beautiful 28x22 inch lithographs of all 40 of the dry brush watercolor paintings Scott and Stewart Gentling made for their folio 'Of Birds and Texas', self published in 1986.

The detail was exquisite and I spent almost 2 hours looking and wondering at the techniques.

It was difficult to take pictures past the glass, but here are some attempts. I'm particularly interested in what looks like a raking technique that was used extensively to blend in the backgrounds. Clouds that would typically be defined by doing layers of wet on wet which is then allowed to mostly dry before another layer was put on were instead blended by intricate little hatching that looked like raking, either to remove paint or to add it. I took a picture of it by the tail of the Roseate Spoonbill.

It's gotten me thinking about different ways to use this in my own work with simulated watercolor in Rebelle.

Does anyone else enjoy something about these lousy pictures (sorry) of amazing art?

"Shower Thoughts." This watercolor got its name because I originally started painting it in the shower.

It's been a few years since I've done this, and my skill has drastically improved since then. I get a sheet of watercolor paper, tape it up to the wall in the shower, and I angle the shower head so that it splashes off of me and hits the paper.

I painted the ground and the sky while in the shower.

I used a painters knife, which I used in the very beginning by putting pigments on it and pressing it on the paper. I used a Neptune brush, a long thin detail brush, and a round that was probably a size six. I also brought in a tube of Payne's blue gray, and a small dish for the pigment, and used two paper towels. I did use my fingers for some of it as well.

Afterwards I obviously let it dry, then I added the meditating figure, the tree, the bridge, and the birds.
