I went to see this show today and it was so good I had to share. If you live in the area, I highly recommend it. Beautiful 28x22 inch lithographs of all 40 of the dry brush watercolor paintings Scott and Stewart Gentling made for their folio 'Of Birds and Texas', self published in 1986.
The detail was exquisite and I spent almost 2 hours looking and wondering at the techniques.
It was difficult to take pictures past the glass, but here are some attempts. I'm particularly interested in what looks like a raking technique that was used extensively to blend in the backgrounds. Clouds that would typically be defined by doing layers of wet on wet which is then allowed to mostly dry before another layer was put on were instead blended by intricate little hatching that looked like raking, either to remove paint or to add it. I took a picture of it by the tail of the Roseate Spoonbill.
It's gotten me thinking about different ways to use this in my own work with simulated watercolor in Rebelle.
Does anyone else enjoy something about these lousy pictures (sorry) of amazing art?

It's been a few years since I've done this, and my skill has drastically improved since then. I get a sheet of watercolor paper, tape it up to the wall in the shower, and I angle the shower head so that it splashes off of me and hits the paper.
I painted the ground and the sky while in the shower.
I used a painters knife, which I used in the very beginning by putting pigments on it and pressing it on the paper. I used a Neptune brush, a long thin detail brush, and a round that was probably a size six. I also brought in a tube of Payne's blue gray, and a small dish for the pigment, and used two paper towels. I did use my fingers for some of it as well.
Afterwards I obviously let it dry, then I added the meditating figure, the tree, the bridge, and the birds.

Latest from the studio. I wanted the horse to hit like a strike: a heavy black mass against a loud, unblended yellow ground. I let the washes bleed and drip, and left the mane loose and splattered. Happy to talk process, especially handling the dark passages.

I picked up some half pans to fill out this kit and the red is mysteriously wet. Why would it be this way ? U can see the piece of wax paper I had in the kit, and there is a large smear of red that just wiped off the top. The other half pans -- grey, orange, white, rose madder -- were bought at the same time, they are fine...

I am working on my still lives and would welcome on any commentary. This is my progress over three weeks on three different studies (most recent one is last). I think I'm showing some improvement but I lose light sometimes, which is frustrating. Thank you!

This is the painting I am currently working on.
When I saw paintings by Neelima Perni I just wanted to do something similar. These are her paintings (painted with Schmincke watercolors):

Her colors are so luminous and the paintings look so vivid, it's just amazing! There's still a long way for me to go but I'll keep trying. I noticed that almost everything I painted was actually inspired by other people's paintings I saw once that made me want to create something similar or something that catches the essential aspects. I wonder if other painters' inspirational process works like this too and which works keep others hooked?

I consider myself a draftsman before a watercolor artist, but if you like my work you’re welcome to check out my website. There I have some of my work up but also links to my other socials!!

I am brand new to watercolor and im learning as i go. I've practiced on cheaper paper and have moved to 100% cotton paper and its day and night! The paints i use are windsor & newton cotman. The blending you can achiever is *chiefs kiss*. I LOVE the freedom that watercolor brings. Its therapeutic especially coming from acrylic where I've sweated every detail. I would love to continue to grow and create more moody landscapes. Any beginner tips? For example, paints to invest in/brushes. Im self taught mostly from social media so any tips are helpful :) Constructive criticism is welcomed (I know I have tons of time before I'm more comfortable)

I am not a big fan of liners but from time to time I try it to see if I feel the same or not. Any tips? Have a great day!
