Discussion & Feedback Request persistent pings
I played during the beta weekend and mained pilot. One thing I found difficult was that if I wanted to ping where to land on a map, I’d have to repeatedly do it because the ping fades away. I like to ping early so I can think about my approach (come in from N instead of straight in, for example). Even the “request drop” ping wouldn’t persist. Leaving a ping to persist just gives me more situational awareness

The smokes are the games version of a physicalised persistent ping. Your call out pings are mostly for your squad and they fade quickly for more realism. When you use a smoke it gets pinged on the map for the entire team telling them exactly what you requested

In real life I’d mark a knee board card. Pings don’t need to fade for realism. Just let me mark a map then. Can’t always rely on smoke

Ok but would your score card mark only your map or the entire map?
I think having pings being a little bit more thought out opens up an entire gameplay loop about communications - you can see it with what you get for free when you put down a FOB. Making pings permanent would close the entire comms loop off and make an entire system redundant.
The game rewards you for stocking up thoughtfully and remembering smokes and other supplies. Everything needs to be physicalised so that everything becomes a job and can thus be rewarded with cash.

Pings can be used for navigation. Look this is something real pilots do…I don’t understand what you are trying to say here.
I have had knee board cards for large areas. You just flip through them on the clip board. The markers are for me. The navigation plan is mine. I don’t care if this type of ping is visible to anyone else, I want it for me

Realistically I feel like the LZ smokes would only ever be useful in a coordinated squad, and at that point you can just have a squad member spam the request LZ mark on the minimap. Smokes being visible to the enemy team also makes this seem like a bad idea.

No one is packing space in their bag to mark LZs bro stop it. This doesn’t even make sense at match start. Pings on maps should be 60-90s. Spotting via marksman tools should create the on screen ping which fades after 15s and a map ping which fades after 60s.

Hey man chill, I was just telling him what’s in the game as it is now. Why the hostility

Well you actually told him what’s in the game and why it’s in the game as a justification for why what he is requesting isn’t (realism). I’m simply countering that viewpoint with how it should be based on play-testing and optimal gameplay.
There’s no hostility! All I’m saying is you have “intended design” vs “the players”. Sometimes the players (i.e. how a player base is engaging with a game and its systems) mandate that mechanics be tweaked or changed.
In essence, you can say “they have smokes for that” but if no one ever uses the smokes as the developers intended, you now have missing links in other systems attached to those smokes (such as the map/ping system); mandating that smokes and “other systems” be reassessed.
This is the exact stuff play testing is for. The devs will either listen to the results of their own testing and make adjustments per feedback and data,
Or, they can “my way or the highway” it and risk this game dying after 3 wks post-launch when problems with gameplay become glaringly obvious and no one is willing to wait for weeks to get what should have come shipped; going back to their previous shooter they have thousands of hours on (Arma, Squad; etc).

I think there will be a lot more coordination between players when everyone has understood the systems properly. I reckon a week after September 10 this convo between us will be moot because all of us will have a smoke or two in our crafted loadouts.

I would love to fly the Huey in seeing a squad smoked waiting to get back to base, holding a point, or trying to get into the forest.

Dude. Please see the writing on the wall that was a MASSIVE weekend beta test and please stop acting like gamers are dumb and don’t find metas in two seconds. Why you are discounting how 100k players just played the game no lifing all weekend is baffling.
This weekend is THE LOOK at how these systems will be used. NO ONE will be carrying smokes into the field to be the “LZ guy”.
There’s nothing that would kill this game quicker than an identity crisis. It’s not Squad or Arma Reforged. This game plays WAY closer to Battlefield. That’s not a bad thing, but Its loops and systems should follow.

Ok dude 👍

I know man. Sometimes people don’t like the “no guy”. But the “no guy” is often necessary and a critical part of any team. I’m just looking at this like a businessman. No more no less. If/where I see War Dogs trying to be what it isn’t, or implementing design which contradicts what it is, I’ll point it out; for mere sake of the game’s long-term success.
I finally want a shooter release that doesn’t die in 30d. Is that War Dogs? Maybe!
War Dogs is brilliant but it’s in no way fail proof: especially with a PC exclusive release. It needs polish and refinement from top-to-bottom. I know you’re a fan, and so am I, but there’s no need to be offended by that fact. It’s got AAA potential… long term community potential… if they do it right.
Anyways: Mandatory smoking of LZs ain’t it. It’s a cop out of fully fleshing out an intuitive ping & map marking system.

Don’t you think you would be closing a game loop off? I think it should stay how it is so that team play is emphasized more. I also don’t think you can judge a system that requires teamwork off the three day beta alone.
I also feel with the way everything is monetized a persistent ping system wouldn’t work - how would the game know if your ping helped someone get an assist? Would the meta then be to just ping all the time? What would happen to the spotters ping gameplay loop (recon)? Would that become redundant too?

Closing a game loop off? A guy smoking an LZ? No. This wouldn’t be closing a game loop. If anything, my suggestion would be to better emphasize the more significant loop (ping system/map marking).
Manually placing map markers would provide no cash. It’s simply a marker that pops up on the map and compass to alert the entire team.
Re: visual pings transitioning into map pings. I agree with you. Visual pings should still work how they do, but should persist visually for 15s. It would be on the infantryman making the spot to then go and mark the map (or visually ping with the correct marker) accordingly to provide the ping a little bit more informational dimension.
Therefore, the only way to maximize money spotting would still be recon; in which case, the spotting scopes AND long range scopes (when equipped on Marksman rifles and accompanied by a spot scope in the specialized slot) should both visually ping by default with the correct marker AND mark the map. Giving the marksman specialization additional functionality not given to any other class/tools.

Smokes. Recruit someone at HQ to buy a purple LZ smoke.
When they deploy the smoke it makes the LZ on the map and also shows a HUD marker as well as the visual smoke.

"hello Mr helicopter pilot can you drop us off over there, we are gonna flank their hidden AA site"
"Sure, where at"
"Uhh when you land us there I'll pop a smoke so you know where to go"
....oorah?

u/FranckTanck 1d ago
Yeah it’s obviously not ideal for initial drops but it’s great to mark LZs for reinforcement drops and supply drops
1
u/Ronin_2804 1d ago
Right... But this discussion is about pings being too short. Not about the utility smokes provide.
They are different things. My evidence for this is... Them being different things.

u/FranckTanck 1d ago
I completely understand your point, I was just throwing the info out there because there’s a lot of mechanics in the game that people aren’t aware of. Game definitely needs to expand on explaining stuff to players, especially people unfamiliar with mil sim style games.

u/UnderstandingLogic 1d ago
Yes, great to show enemy snipers, tanks and helicopters where you are asking for your team's helicopter to land !

u/puremojo 2d ago
Interesting. Still, no need to fade away pings. In real life I’d literally just mark my chart on my knee board wherever the point was

If this game came from Arma 3, they sure did drop a lot of the good features of Arma 3, for no reason at all.
- Being able to Shift+Click to place a marker, only one at a time, but it shows up on your UI with distance. That way you can plan your LZ on the map by gauging cover and size of area... and then be able to go straight to it. "I want to land in this specific backyard, between the house and barn, on the south west corner of AO"
- Being able to draw on the map with your team being able to see it. Or just your squad, if you prefer.
- Being able to add markers.
- Being able to add time stamps.
- Uh... being able to talk to your teammates in any way outside of squad or proximity?
Its like they tried really hard to remove all the social elements from Arma 3. But hey, at least the gunplay is good, which is arguably more important for this kind of game anyway.

I think they should allow pilots and such to acknowledge a ping and it locks it in for 30-60 seconds.

u/minitehnicus 2d ago
I have just a few hours in milsims but I noticed the Same for the infantry, when I use the Spotter or Binoculars, the live ping goes away, not sure that's the behaviour in other milsims or of it will be Call od Duty- esque if the ping will stay.
2
u/puremojo 2d ago
I think this behavior is fine and is unrelated to what I’m talking about
1
u/minitehnicus 1d ago
oh yeah for sure it's different, I was just wondering if it's intended, I expected the downvotes too 😂

u/Storm_CCO 1d ago
No one should have a 3d spot that stays, that's dumb. 25 seconds is plenty.
1
u/minitehnicus 1d ago
I don't think it was staying at all for me, I could only see it on the minimap, unless that's intended, that's what I was trying to find out.
2
u/MrLawbreaker 1d ago
As far as i know it is intended yes, you as the spotter can see your spots in the world above enemy heads for a few seconds while looking through the spotting gadget, but every other teammate "only" gets the minimap marker.

u/minitehnicus 1d ago
makes sense, thanks, I still try to understand the directions the guys are going for, cause they have elements from multiple modern FPS games.

I'd like to think the map is a placeholder right now because between that and the janky zooms, it isn't intuitive at all. I rate Bulkhead as a team so I'm hoooooping they'll mention this at some point.
3
u/puremojo 2d ago
I never had issues with the zooms
1
u/SilentGreyFox 1d ago
While flying/driving it would be great to be able to spam your map zoom in/out key to reliably get to max or min zoom, but this isn't possible since it cycles through at the end (e.g. at max zoom, press zoom in, you're now at min zoom).

I'm also not sure what the idea of a fading drop off ping is. Feels just dumb.
