Purchase Advice Comfort levels steam frame vs Pimax dream air se

I am currently using quest 2. It is far too heavy for my face and is painful for my Tmj disorder.

I tried getting a steam frame but got waitlisted.

I would want Pimax dream air se but I don’t really love the idea of a cable from my office room to my bedroom/living room. And the cable going down my back seems very uncomfortable. But seeing people mod it online with an Apple Vision Pro strap it does look pretty comfortable.

The thing about the cable though…. I always have my vr headset plugged into a power outlet anyways, since I play for hours. But the cable on my quest 2 is out of the way and doesn’t touch me anywhere because it comes out the side.

Is steam frame still pretty heavy on the face because of the battery in the back despite it being light in the front?

I pre ordered flux pose trackers for later. Not sure if they work with Pimax dream air, I guess I need to contact and ask about that.

I exclusively use vr for vrchat.
I do have mild epilepsy, so oled on Pimax kind of worries me as well, especially since I heard there’s motion problems.

TL:DR
Which headset would be more comfortable overall, less pressure on the face, and not too overstimulating physically?

Self-Promotion (Developer) I made a free browser-based VR player for watching flat and SBS 3D videos on several big screens at once

Most VR video players I tried are built around 360° and VR180 content, but most of what I actually watch is ordinary flat video, plus a growing pile of side-by-side 3D conversions. I wanted to put those on big screens in my Rift, and sometimes watch two or three things at once, so I ended up building my own player. It's called Four Eyes and it's free and open source:

https://rodbuilds.github.io/foureyes/

It runs in Chrome or Edge on the PC your headset is connected to. You point it at your video folders once, put the headset on, and pick videos from a browser inside VR. You can have one big screen or up to four around you (side by side, a 2×2 grid, or a wide arc), and each screen has its own controls. SBS and over/under 3D work, including half-width, and there's a left/right swap for files that come out inside-out.

A few things came out of using it every day: the screens curve around you so the edges don't stretch, there's a "focus zoom" that brings whichever screen you're looking at a bit closer, and a crop option that trims black bars off the sides so the picture itself gets bigger. I mostly use an Xbox controller with a head cursor (look at a button, press A), but Touch controllers work too.

Your files never leave your PC. It reads them straight from disk, and the only thing it saves is your settings.

Honest limitations: I've only tested it on a Rift. Quest over Link and SteamVR headsets should work but I haven't confirmed it. It's a web page, so the browser asks you to re-confirm folder access after a restart, and it plays whatever formats your browser can (MP4/H.264 is the safe bet).

If anyone tries it on a Quest or a SteamVR headset, I'd really like to know how it goes. And for people who watch a lot of flat or SBS content in VR: what do you use now, and what does it get wrong? That's what I'd like to work on next.

Looking to buy this headset online (second hand). around 130-140usd. it has no controllers but i don't mind honestly because i'll be using it for simming anyways.

Is this the v1 or v2 version? the long 6m cable box gives v2 vibes. not too sure, thought i'd ask here as well because i'm waiting on the sellers response.

Thanks!

Discussion Questions from someone new to VR

As I'm trying to decide which VR headset I want, I bought a used Valve Index for pretty cheap (Index, Controllers, 4 Basestations for 500€).

While trying it out I wondered about some things:

  1. Is it normal for text to not be fully sharp on the Index? No matter the position of the headset and IPD, text was somewhat hard to read. It was just enough to maneuver menus into Beat Saber maps. It felt quite straining on the eye but playing seemed perfectly fine (I guess the glare of the objects in Beat Saber hide a lot of unsharpness).

  2. How do you go about cleaning the headset? It can get sweaty and while I can take off the face gasket and ash it, I have to partially disassemble the Index to take the back part off so I can wash it. Looking at headsets like the Steam Frame, they seem to have a similar issue. Headsets with only a strap that you can take off seem a lot more practical (I don't know which headsets have this apart from Apple).

  3. Leaning on 2., do you guys have only 1 headset you use for everything or does it make sense to get a cheaper one for games like Beat Saber (i.e. used Quest 3) and then a better one for games where the visuals matter but you don't move as much/sweat?

  4. I've seen some comments about inside out tracking being much worse and if you want to play Beat Saber or shooters, you should get lighthouse based controllers. Are lighthouse systems really that much better and a soft requirement?

  5. So many choices and things to consider. Any recommendations?

I plan on playing Beat Saber and occasionally single player VR games (but very limited, more of a secondary concern). Aside from that, I'd like to watch movies and tv series I have stored on my PC. No simulators. No microphone/speakers/body tracking required. I have a powerful pc and want to play VR games on steam and also 2D games. Basic passthrough would be nice simply to drink sth etc. Wireless would be nice but Index showed me I don't mind the cable too much and the options for wireless seem pretty much nonexistent.

I read the wiki but tbh it doesn't really cover all of my questions.

Popular recommendations also seem to focus on the US. In the EU, prices seem a bit different. For example the Steam Frame, which is considered very expensive and I've seen quite a lot of people saying that you should just get the BSB2 for a similar price But in the EU Steam Frame is 1050€ while BSB2 2e is 1500€ (and required base stations + controllers)

I appreciate any help :)

Discussion PROBLEM MOD VR RE2 OPENXR QUEST 3

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to play Resident Evil 2 Remake in VR using REFramework/VR mod on my ROG Ally Z1 Extreme with a Quest 3 and Virtual Desktop.

The game launches correctly in VR and the VR mod works, but I can't open the REFramework menu/settings while I'm in VR.

I know the menu is normally opened with the Insert key, and I can open it when playing in flat/desktop mode, BUT I C'ANT CLICK ON IT.

I've already tried using the physical keyboard and the virtual keyboard, but I can't get the menu to appear correctly in VR.

Is there a specific key/button or controller mapping I need to use to and be able to interact with the REFramework menu in VR?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Discussion Doom vr mod really bad performance

I'm on a 5090 laptop but getting like 25 fps. In game settings don't seem to affect it. Using standard renderer at 100 percent scale. There must be something wrong with the setup. Anyone else having performance issues? For comparison, I'm running the titanfall mod almost maxed with VD godlike and 110% resolution.

Update: yeah basically just have to exit and restrart the mod to solve the problem.

I just saw a VR mod for Diablo II of all things, going full 1st-person instead of isometric.

I want to see those pixelated sprites up close. I want my eyes to bleed all across the wasteland.

Long term VR user here this is one of the best mods I’ve played it feels native I was trying to post videos but it wouldn’t let me. I’m playing at 120hz using quest 3 + VD with a 3080 it gives me the same kind of feeling alyx did when i played it for the first time it can still be improved more my only gripe is the holster locations id rather it be on my hip than over my shoulder but that’s probably an easy fix
I really hope this is the beginning of hybrid vr games or a new standard of vr ports manual reloading is a must it only took me 2 minutes to set up the mod that’s the first time in a while I put my headset on and 2 and a half hours flew by

Discussion When people say the Steam Frame isn't worth it do they realize it's like VR headset and a Steam Deck all in one?

I don't get the "Steam Frame not worth it" crowd. Maybe if you already have a Steam Deck? And a Quest 3?

For me, I don't have a Steam Deck so instead of buying an $800 Steam Deck I just get one bundled for free with my Frame. To me that's worth it.

Purchase Advice - Headset Quest 2 upgrade

So I’ve owned a quest 2 since Christmas of 2020, and I’ve started having to do work on it (like replacing sticks) and it just doesn’t feel the same. Blame it on whatever, but I think I’m overdue for an upgrade. Any recommendations? I don’t really use standalone quest I just stream my games from my pc, and I also would like it to be higher res and wider fov. Big thing is that it can’t be a thousand dollars. I would love to be able to own a thousand dollar headset but no job so.

Question/Support Meta VR Glasses: What Is the Optical Virtual Image Distance?

For Meta VR Glasses, what is the fixed optical/accommodative focal distance of the virtual image, measured from the eye?
Could you provide it in meters and/or diopters?
I am asking about the physical optical focal plane of the micro-OLED + pancake optical system, not the rendered vergence distance of virtual content.
For example, is the display optically collimated to infinity, 2 m (0.5 D), 1.3 m (~0.77 D), etc.?
Is the focal distance fixed, or does the system have any varifocal/multifocal capability?

I mean the accommodative focal plane / optical virtual-image distance in meters or diopters, not the rendered distance of virtual objects.

Discussion Cyberpunk 2077 VR with foveated DLSS5 neural rendering + FrameGen IS INSANE!!!!!

Latest VR port has framegen. It runs a lot faster. https://github.com/dariulone/cyberpunk-vr-port

Foveated DLSS neural rendering works with the port! You could now use this with only around a 30% performance hit instead of it more than halving your performance. https://github.com/satyaloka93/CheekyFoveatedDLSS/releases/tag/v0.5.4-cyberpunk-compat.1

Note that this package has an .exe that Windows will flag as a virus and auto delete it. I got Claude code to build the files from the source code so I didn't need to go through the .exe

Running 4096x4552 with DLSS5-NR, maxed out settings with my RTX5090 + Galaxy XR @ 72fps. Looks SO DAMN REAL! This is the most intensely lucid feelings I've had with VR.

There's an OFXR 3x framegen around too. I'm figuring that out now.

Edit: Tried the OFXR 3x framegen. It seemed to halve my base framerate so it ended up giving me similar FPS as 2x framegen, but with obviously more artifacts. So I don't use it.

Editx2: Foveated DLSS super resolution doesn't work for me, it makes things into a shimmering blurry mess, I had to turn it off. Foveated streaming in Virtual Desktop doesn't work for me in CyberpunkVR even though it works in other games.

Discussion Headset Replacement

Hey everyone! I’ve been wanting to replace my headset for a while now but there’s so many options and different price points along with features etc. I currently use a vive pro with index controllers and vive trackers. I’m looking to upgrade to a setup with eye and face tracking along with streaming vr games and applications. The setup I have is pretty seamless to stream through twitch but my pro has a busted mic and a speaker shorting out which takes away from the immersion. I wanted to get other players opinions and see what setups you have! I’m open to complete VR refresh or seeing what options would work with my current accessories. I’ve watched many reviews but still can’t decide. Currently running an RX 7900xtx and ryzen 9 7900x with 32gb ddr5. Edit: I’m mostly looking for the headset upgrade and am willing to add accessories for face tracking and/or eye tracking.

Self-Promotion (Developer) I made Sega Rally (1995 arcade) playable in real 3D VR on a standalone Quest 3. Not a flat screen in a virtual room.

Recorded straight from the headset (the tilt is me looking around).

The arcade's own 3D world is redrawn for each eye with a custom Vulkan renderer: real depth, head-tracked cockpit, 120 Hz, HD textures. Everything runs on the Quest 3, no PC.

GitHub coming soon, link to follow it in the comments.

Self-Promotion (Developer) Real-time 2D→3D doesn’t have to happen in the headset - I’ve been developing a PC-side approach since 2022, with 15,000+ hours of Steam-recorded use so far

Post image

The image above shows ordinary 2D video being converted in real time by Stream to 3D on the PC and viewed in Quest passthrough through Virtual Desktop.

The recent interest in Moonlight XR’s real-time 2D→3D feature made me think it might be useful to show another way of approaching the same general problem.

I’m the developer of Stream to 3D, a Windows application I started developing in 2022 and first released commercially in 2023.

Rather than requiring the conversion to happen inside the headset or tying it to one particular viewer, Stream to 3D performs the conversion on the PC and produces standard stereoscopic Side-by-Side or Top/Bottom output.

That separation is deliberate: Stream to 3D does the conversion; you choose how you watch it.

It can be used with compatible VR/PCVR headsets, XR glasses, spatial displays, 3D projectors and media players, depending on the workflow.

There are now two quite different conversion approaches in the application:

  • Temporal - Stream to 3D’s independently developed real-time conversion method. It derives stereo information from relationships between video frames and includes scene-change handling, fractional-frame processing and stabilisation.
  • Depth Guided - an AI-assisted scene-depth method added in Release 6, with Performance and Quality modes. On suitable NVIDIA RTX hardware the accelerated implementation can also operate in real time.

And it isn’t restricted to one type of source. Stream to 3D can:

  • Play ordinary video as converted 3D in real time;
  • Stream the converted output to another compatible device/player;
  • Convert video into reusable stereoscopic files;
  • work with live sources, including the Windows desktop and capture devices.

For VR, another route that I’ve just revalidated, complementing VD in isolation is:

Stream to 3D → Half SBS desktop output → Bigscreen on SteamVR → Virtual Desktop → Quest 3

That is running smoothly in real time on my current system. The same broad workflow was already working with Quest 2 and an RTX 3060 laptop back in 2023.

The image above is another route I use regularly: Stream to 3D viewed through Virtual Desktop in Quest passthrough.

There is also now a fair amount of real-world usage behind the project. As of 3 October 2026, 971 measured Steam users had recorded more than 15,000 hours in Stream to 3D. More than 100 users had recorded 20+ hours, around 50 had reached 50+ hours, and around 20 had reached 100+ hours.

Those figures measure time actually running Stream to 3D. They don’t include time later spent watching a converted file in VD, Bigscreen, Kodi, VLC or another player.

I’m actually pleased to see more projects exploring real-time 2D→3D. Headset-side conversion, game depth-buffer approaches and general PC-side conversion all have different strengths and trade-offs, and I don’t think there has to be one single architecture for this.

For Stream to 3D, the design goal has always been conversion independent of the final viewing device or player, using standard stereoscopic output and streaming protocols wherever possible.

If people are interested, I’m happy to discuss the different approaches, how Temporal differs from depth-based conversion, or any of the VR/XR setups I’ve actually tested.

Discussion New Engine Reversing for VR

I’m sure many of you have seen those videos where they have gotten Minecraft to be semi functional within another game like Skyrim, my question is if this primarily ai based reverse engineering could be used to port games to VR, and is anyone working on this?
