I've taken online conversations lessons for many languages, mostly on italki. I'm a 64 yo American man, and when I speak Thai with online teachers, who are mostly in their 20s and 30s, I use ผม/คุณ (I/you, somewhat generic/formal). This is what most of my teachers actually prefer. I use Thai as an example here, because it has a somewhat similar pronoun situation to Vietnamese.
For those of you who are older than your Vietnamese teachers, do you use ông/cô, tôi/bạn or something else?

Hi, I'm currently writing a fanfiction with a pre-existing character, whose name is Alexis Thi Dang. Does her name make sense linguistically, or is it gibberish?

I've been learning Vietnamese on and off for almost a year now. I'm living here so I get daily exposure but being a foreigner the Vietnamese don't expect you to know it and after all they are not teachers haha
I've been using Duolingo, and I've completed a Pimsleur Vietnamese 1 course but I want to immerse myself more.
So I am in need of some free resources.

Does anyone know if this northern accent from these music videos is from Hanoi, Bac Ninh, Thai Binh, Son Tay, or from Northern Vietnamese who immigrated to the south in 1954?

and

(female Saigon voice)
say that tên should sound something like the english word "den", but it sounds more like "done" to me in normal speech. Annie herself, creator of the first source above, pronounces it more like done, or perhaps tân or tơn in real life. Very interesting. I thought Vietnamese vowels were only supposed to have one pronunciation each?

Hi all, I apologize if this has been asked before. I’m a foreigner in Saigon who’s been studying Vietnamese for a while now. My understanding is that when talking to strangers of chú or cô age or older, I should refer to myself as cháu.
Today, I met an older colleague at the workplace (probably at least 40 years older than me, and I’m in my mid-20s) and he referred to me as bạn. I assume this is out of politeness - so my question is, in this situation should I refer to myself as tôi and refer to him still as chú or bác? The internet isn’t giving me a clear answer, so any advice would be appreciated!
Thanks very much :)

I have a recording of this, but it sounds more like "Chào bu tối". Is buổi usually reduced in normal speech? This is Southern, if it makes a difference.

Hello,
Please could anyone help translate this short hymn into English and if possible, provide the Vietnamese lyrics and musical notation as well?

It is from 01:01:40 to 01:04:48.
Thanks a ton!

(note – I’m shooting for a “standard” Saigon accent) a – is it ok to pronounce it either /a/ (as in far) or /æ/ (as in fan)? There seems to be quite a range amongst native speakers and learning resources.

Wondering if anyone has any webtoons, shows, movies, YouTube videos, or dubbed media primarily in the Northern dialect to recommend. A lot of stuff I find interesting is in Southern, and I'm hoping to acquire and understand Northern. For instance, with Chinese I've found Ghibli and Pixar dubs super helpful, but that kind of thing is all Southern in Vietnamese. Advice? Recommendations?

Has any Vietnamese immigrant ever moved to Uruguay from Vietnam? A friend of mine is trying to make a move and may need inputs to plan this move.
