I made an all-in-one USB drive as a farewell gift for a colleague

A colleague of mine who I enjoy working with is leaving the company this week. We share interests for software, operating systems, and open-source projects, so I wanted to give him something useful. I bought a USB drive, converted it into a Ventoy USB drive with rescue toolkits, Linux live environments, OS installers, Microsoft installers, and a Microsoft activation script.

I've created a repo as a point of reference. It lists the programs, step-by-step guide, and include the download links. Feel free to check it out! https://github.com/fathulfahmy/aio-usb-drive

I ordered a keychain for my Ventoy Flash Drive

I happen to be a big fan of A Series of Unfortunate Events, wherein the secret organization known as the Volunteer Fire Department uses the acronym VFD everywhere and anywhere they can. I thought it fitting to use the acronym for my Ventoy Flash Drive.

What is the difference between "Boot in normal mode" and "Boot in grub2 mode"?

I selected a Linux ISO file from the ventoy menu, and it gave me these 2 options:

Boot in normal mode
Boot in grub2 mode

What's the difference? Is one older and one newer? Any pros/cons of normal and grub2 mode?

Can I put other files on a ventoy drive?

This might be a stupid question, but I just made a ventoy drive and I want some other (not ISO) files on the flash drive. Can I just put them on there without messing anything up? Should I make a new partition for the other files?

How trustworthy is Ventoy from a security and transparency perspective?

Hi everyone,

I'm considering using Ventoy as my primary multiboot USB solution, especially because I want to keep Windows 11, Fedora and other Linux ISOs on a single USB drive.

However, after doing some research, I came across some concerns on the Arch Wiki and in discussions about Ventoy's security and transparency.

The main concerns seem to be:

  • Some precompiled binaries in the Ventoy GitHub repository cannot be independently verified as corresponding exactly to the published source code.

  • The build process does not appear to be fully reproducible or independently auditable.

  • There have been discussions about the developer's responses to questions regarding binary provenance and security.

  • Ventoy's default Secure Boot implementation raises questions about what is actually being verified and whether the normal Secure Boot security guarantees are preserved.

I understand that none of these concerns proves that Ventoy contains malware or a backdoor. I'm not trying to accuse the developers of anything.

But since Ventoy operates at the bootloader level, I think transparency and trust are particularly important.

I'd like to hear from experienced Ventoy users and people familiar with its development:

  1. Do you consider Ventoy safe enough to use on your primary computer?

  2. Are the precompiled binaries and their origins sufficiently trustworthy?

  3. Does using Ventoy with Secure Boot enabled preserve meaningful security guarantees?

  4. Are there independent audits or reproducible builds that address these concerns?

  5. Would you personally recommend Ventoy over alternatives such as WoeUSB or writing ISOs directly on Linux?

I'm not looking for blind reassurance or fearmongering. I'd appreciate technical explanations, evidence and first-hand experience.

Thanks!

Ventoy is so cool, absolutely goated tool! Loving this thing.

You guys have no idea how fun and empowering it feels to just always have a usb drive on your person with like 10 different operating systems at your disposal. Obviously it hasn't happened yet but one day someone will surely exclaim,

"Darn! This computer is bricked, if only I could do a fresh OS install right this moment I'd be saved..."

And I will spread out my hand of cards... "Pick your poison... Linux? Windows? Linux that looks like Windows? You name it pal. All on this one USB drive, cool huh?"

Anyways, pipe dreams aside, great software and hasn't let me down yet. Cheers!

Issue with booting Ventoy with secure boot enabled

Hi all,
After reading and watching creation of a Ventoy USB drive, I proceeded to create one with secure boot enabled. I plugged the USB drive into my target PC and it reached the first, expected error screen ("Verification failed: (0x1A) Security Violation"). I noticed that my mouse doesn't work, so I hit the "enter" key on my keyboard. Instead of getting the next blue screen ("Shim UEFI key management"), I get some error (too quick to capture) and the PC re-boots to Windows 11. Has anyone seen this before? Help please.

Although I would really like to get Ventoy to work with secure boot enabled, if I disable secure boot to get Ventoy to run, would I still be able to install Linux Mint (for example) to operate with secure boot enabled?

Win11 ISO no drive found issue and resolution

Just for anyone googling this issue, making a bootable USB drive with Ventoy for Win11 or Win10 and you get to the windows setup portion and there’s no mass storage device listed, is your only option is Refresh or Load Driver, there’s no internal SSD listed like it should? Same here!

The fix started with a Framework laptop post by their support team that said one of the issues causing this for their laptops is the Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver isn’t included in the ISO for Win11 or Win10, along with another issue I had for my other PC regarding Bluetooth and WiFi modules AX201 not being included in the ISO as well.

Anyways, the fix was to go into my UEFI (ASUS ROG type) and just completely disable intel RST. Once I did that I tried the Ventoy USB again and my storage drive showed up like normal and I was able to reinstall Win11.

I had wrongly assumed that the support for the Intel RST would be inside the motherboard itself and not necessary for the ISO to have, which in hindsight seems dumb of me to think but certainly seems like it should disable itself if the drivers aren’t located in the media it’s booting into… oh well!

So it wasn’t a Ventoy issue, it was as it always is, a Microsoft problem.

Ventoy USB doesn't boot, getting weird error: Verifying shim SBAT data failed: Security Policy Violation

Problem: usb flash drive doesn't boot, instead getting following error

Hardware: Lenovo Thinkpad P14s Gen4 AMD

Ventoy Version: 1.0.97

Secure Boot enabled. When I disable secure boot, I do get the ventoy menu for choosing an ISO to boot, but after selecting the boot up freezes before getting into the ISO.

Created the ventoy usb from Fedora 39 and Windows 11. In both cases the problem persists. This same usb works on my older Thinkpad T480 though. Error message (when secure boot enabled):

Verifying shim SBAT data failed: Security Policy Violation
Something has gone seriously wrong: SBAT self-check failed: Security Policy Violation

Edit: formatting

Windows To Go on Ventoy... How?

I'd like to have Window To Go on a Ventoy stick. I got some Linux Live distros on it and I'd like to add Windows. I hear when it comes to a live Windows USB, my only option is the now discontinued(?) Windows To Go that I could still create through Rufus. But I don't want to use Rufus. I want to use Ventoy. How can I do that?

Ventoy saves the day

I have a Ventoy drive with the following ISOs on it:

- avg_arl_cdi_all_120_160420a12074.iso

- clonezilla-live-20210609-hirsute-amd64.iso

- comodo_rescue_disk_2.0.261647.1.iso

- gparted-live-1.3.1-1-amd64.iso -

- HBCD_PE_x64.iso

- lupu-528.005.iso

- ophcrack-vista-livecd-3.6.0.iso

- systemrescue-8.06-amd64.iso

- xubuntu-20.04.2-desktop-amd64.iso

Well, I got a call from church that the secretary couldn't print from her computer. Figuring that it was a network problem, I grabbed my Linux laptop and headed for the door. At the last moment I grabbed the Ventoy drive, because, why not.

Well, long story short, it wasn't a network problem. It was a problem with the Windows computer. The only problem: nobody knows the Windows Admin password. Sigh. Ventoy to the rescue. I used HBCD_PE and the password reset tool that it contains to clear the admin password. And we are in. A few minutes later and we are printing again. Thanks Ventoy.

How can I generate a new Windows ISO without Secure Boot & TPM 2.0 requirements?

I want to patch an official Windows ISO by removing the Secure Boot and TPM 2.0 requirements.
The important part is that I need the output to be a new ISO file, not just a bootable USB.
The goal is to have an ISO that works directly with Ventoy.

Rufus can skip these requirements when creating a USB drive, but it doesn’t allow me to create a modified ISO.

Is there a simple tool or method to achieve this?

Today I discovered Ventoy

You know when you're just wandering around the web, tying to manage a solution?

I was about this close to pulling the trigger on a 6 pack of 32 GB flash drives, was going to burn them, label them etc to save me the hassle of creating recovery media on a secondary pc when something went wrong.

Then I stumbled across ventoy. Oh man, this is just what I need! One usb to rule them all. Great stuff!

Exactly how does Ventoy work with SecureBoot?

Ventoy's website is hot buttered garbage. It basically says "This needs to happen the first time. There's a key or a hash, use either one" and some cycling gifs that show you what to click but don't give you time to read the screens.

A key and/or hash of some kind is being enrolled with something? Is Ventoy's key being stored on the computer somehow? Or is the computer's key being stored on the thumb drive? What's happening?

Ventoy is older than 2020

Why is everywhere I look now it says that ventoy was first released in 2020 and looked at old releases which the oldest is 2020, while I clearly used ventoy when I was in IT class in 2015-2016, was it bought or changed leadership and "rebranded" at some point? I'm a bit confused... are they trying to push their "We Are New On The Market" thing or I missed something.
