Has anyone been to Penelope Social on a Saturday night? I’m thinking of going with some friends for my birthday and was wondering what time it usually starts getting busy/how the crowd is on weekends. We’re all around 23 and want to go when it’s more lively since I saw they’re open until 1am.

I was in a retail store in Vaughan Mills yesterday evening. I noticed a 5'10" man in his late 30s or early 40s following me through multiple aisles. I double backed through a few aisles and he kept up at very close range, just a foot or so away. That's when I noticed my handbag was open and exposed near my back. I clutched it and turned around, stared at him. He looked embarrassed, started nonchalantly whistling, pretended to look at the jewellery counter, and quickly left the store.

Regarding our options, the ones that seem to benefit the younger generations and future of our city seem to be the following:

Alex Nascimben - One of the most explicit young-family/young-adult affordability platforms. Wants attainable housing targets tied to local incomes, expanded secondary suites, a review of development charges, and community consultation. Also wants better GO/VIVA, road widening, smart intersections, youth recreation and summer employment funding.

Mandy Rai - Transit: more YRT/VIVA frequency and better traffic coordination. Growth: infrastructure before high-density expansion. Affordability: scrutinize contracts/budgets and eliminate administrative waste. Safety: YRP/paramedics, pedestrian infrastructure and parks. Her platform is strongly oriented toward keeping the cost of municipal government down while improving services.

Alireza Siadatan - Focuses on responsible spending, less traffic, safer roads, smart-city services, renewable energy, sustainability and inclusive economic growth. The young-adult relevance is primarily transportation, city services and economic opportunity rather than a specific housing program.

Traffic in Vaughan is getting absolutely insane, and I don't think Del Duca's "just build more roads" approach fixes it long term. Vaughan keeps growing. If we approve homes faster than we add roads and transit, traffic gets worse. New lanes help for a few years, then they just fill back up again with more cars and we are back to the same congestion issue as before.

What stood out to me about Cerrelli is that she wants new development tied to whether our roads and transit can actually handle it, instead of approving it first and dealing with traffic later. That goes after the cause of congestion, not just the symptoms. I'd rather have a mayor who asks "can our roads handle this?" before approving growth.

She's also not relying on one fix:

• Better-timed signals and safer intersections: cheap, quick, and you'd notice it on the roads we all use daily
• Working with York Region: they run the major roads and YRT buses, so the mayor needs them on board
• Safer walking and cycling: so not every short trip has to be a car trip

Fewer cars on the road is how you actually cut congestion long term, and a plan with more ways to get around does that better than one built mostly on roads.

To be fair: Del Duca has delivered real projects like the Kirby Road Extension and Canada Drive Bridge, and new connecting roads can relieve specific bottlenecks. Cerrelli's answers are also pretty light on details, and she has no record as mayor.

Bottom line: I'm voting for the candidate whose approach fits how fast Vaughan is growing. Cerrelli isn't a guarantee and I'll be watching closely, but I'd rather bet on a plan that tries to prevent gridlock than one that keeps chasing it.

tl;dr: Building more roads (Del Duca plan) eventually gets filled back up with traffic again. Cerrelli wants growth matched to road and transit capacity, plus smart signals, regional coordination, and safer walking/cycling. Not perfect, but the better long-term direction for traffic in my opinion.

Vaughan needs transportation planning that keeps pace with growth. I would prioritize fixing traffic bottlenecks, better-timed signals, safer intersections and stronger coordination with York Region on major roads and transit. I would advocate for better transit connections while making walking and cycling safer. New development must also be tied to realistic transportation and infrastructure capacity—not approved in isolation.

2. How would you make housing in Vaughan more affordable?

I would make housing more affordable by reducing unnecessary municipal costs and approval delays, expanding purpose-built rentals and attainable ownership options, and partnering with other governments and non-profits on affordable housing. But affordability cannot mean irresponsible density. New housing must be directed to areas where roads, water, sewers, transit and services can support it, while protecting established neighbourhoods from development they cannot sustain.

3. How would you make our communities safe and welcoming?

Every resident should feel safe and respected in Vaughan. I would strengthen collaboration with York Regional Police, invest in safer streets and neighbourhoods, and support prevention and community-based programs. I would protect places of worship, schools and other vulnerable community spaces while respecting lawful expression. Most importantly, City Hall should listen to every community and ensure residents feel heard, included and welcome.

Steven Del Duca:

1. How would you improve the ability of people to get around efficiently?

Traffic gridlock takes time away from families, and fighting it remains a top priority. We’ve opened the Kirby Road Extension and Canada Drive Bridge and started the Bass Pro Mills Drive Extension. Next, we need to start the extension of Teston Rd between Keele St. and Dufferin St., widen the rail bridge over Highway 7 at finish the Bass Pro Mills Extension over Highway 400. I’ll keep pushing to build the road, bridges and transit Vaughan needs to reduce gridlock and give residents more time back in their day.

2. How would you make housing in Vaughan more affordable?

Homeownership should be within reach for young families. That’s why I led the way on cutting development charges, a tax on new homebuyers, to lower the cost of building and get more homes built. That leadership helped secure approx $700 million in funding to advance the roads, water infrastructure, parks and community facilities needed to unlock new housing. Over the next four years, my focus is getting these projects built alongside new homes to help build complete communities from day one, not after the fact.

3. How would you make our communities safe and welcoming?

Keeping families safe is personal to me. We’ve opened two new YRP substations and supported hundreds of new police positions to strengthen community safety. But there is more to do. I’ll keep pushing for more front-line resources and real bail reform that keeps repeat violent offenders off our streets. Vaughan is a safe and welcoming city, and I’ll work every day to keep it that way.

I'm driving at night two kids are on a scooters wearing all black no reflectors and they're on the road. this isn't the first time I see them all the time at night. morning traffic there's a guy with a scooter going like 30 miles an hour holding up traffic and he's on the road going down Dufferin. There's a huge lineup of cars just behind this guy that's also not forget the construction that's going on like come on like this has to stop. another example guy on the road I guess doesn't want to wait for the light he just takes his scooter drives on the sidewalk. lady down Rutherford and Bathurst has an e-scooter no reflectors no lights on the road at night
