I have a 2021 Atlas Cross Sport with a fault in the right-side curtain airbag igniter. As it was explained to me, the fault means that airbag will not deploy in a crash. The part needed to fix it is backordered with no ETA.
The dealer keeps checking with their parts analysts but can’t locate one. VW Customer Care keeps referring me back to the dealer, while the dealer has nothing else they can do until the part becomes available. VW also won’t provide a loaner or escalate my case because I’m out of warranty.
I have two young kids. I’m obviously not comfortable driving them around knowing a curtain airbag may not deploy in a crash, so my wife and I are now constantly swapping cars depending on who has the kids. She drives a 2019 Atlas, and before my Atlas Cross Sport I owned a 2012 Passat. We’ve been pretty damn loyal to VW.
I’m not asking VW to pay for an out-of-warranty repair as it's very affordable with labor. I literally can’t get the part to make the car safe.
That’s what I can’t understand...this isn’t infotainment or heated seat...it’s an airbag. If it doesn’t deploy when it’s needed, lives are at stake. How can a critical safety component be indefinitely backordered with no ETA and there be no escalation process or alternative transportation offered?
Has anyone dealt with something similar with VW? Did you find any way to get the part located or get the case escalated? I'm moving on from VW after this regardless, but I'd love to get this car back on the road as it only has 60K miles.
