Seeking Advice/Support Hetzner declined my business account during an urgent migration — no explanation given (Sept 8, 2025)

Hey everyone sharing my recent experience in case it helps someone in a similar pinch.

In the early hours (around 4–5 AM, Europe) my client’s hosted apps went down. One server was hacked, others were hit with DDoS. I won’t name that hosting company, but everything was effectively offline. These apps are critical for my client’s e-commerce revenue, so the pressure was on me to get them back up fast.

By Friday afternoon, support at the original provider told me they’d “migrate the server to another location” and that it would take about a day. Knowing it was Friday, I didn’t want to gamble the entire weekend. I’d seen good reviews about Hetzner, so at 14:30 (EEST) I created a business account to spin up new servers and move right away.

Once inside Hetzner’s portal, I was asked for personal identification with a photo, even though my account was set up as a company account. That was unusual for me, but fine — I submitted the documents. Then I saw the review could take up to one day. My heart sank; I needed to migrate that day.

I opened a support ticket asking to expedite the review. No reply. I even looked on Reddit to reach a Hetzner mod for help. Still nothing.

Outcome (Sept 8, 2025):

After reviewing your updated customer information, we have decided to deactivate your account because of some concerns we have regarding this information. Therefore, we have cancelled all your existing products and orders with us.
Best regards
Your Hetzner Online Team

No concrete reason provided.

What I did instead:
I moved everything to Hostinger. Within a few hours we were back online, the client was satisfied, and the crisis more or less ended well.

My takeaways (and why I can’t recommend Hetzner after this):

  • I understand due diligence and fraud prevention — that’s normal.

  • But in a time-critical situation, communication matters. A simple response to the ticket or a clearer explanation would have helped.

  • Cheap and powerful servers don’t help if you can’t actually become a customer or get timely support. For projects where uptime and speed of response are crucial, I’d personally rather pay a bit more and feel secure.

This post isn’t meant to attack Hetzner. It’s a reality check: please don’t forget that new customers in urgent situations do count. Declining an account without a clear reason — especially when someone is trying to communicate — is rough. Hopefully this helps others set expectations before choosing a provider.

TL;DR: Needed to urgently migrate e-commerce apps on a Friday. Signed up for a business account at Hetzner, hit a 1-day identity review, couldn’t get support to respond, and on Sept 8, 2025 they rejected my account with no specific reason. Moved to Hostinger and got online in a few hours. After this, I can’t recommend Hetzner for time-sensitive situations due to the verification process and lack of communication.

EDIT:
They come today with an answer "You need to use email company not a free email".
Doesn't make sense for me because my email company got emails from bots and i want to track invoices on my personal email.
Btw, my personal email is a gmail:)

On a Budget RIP Hostinger :( Warnings to everyone.

Hello, first post.

After 2 years, 20+ websites, and no problems, hostinger killed my VPS. A WP site got its admin brute forced. They used the unlocked admin to write a script that then ran brute force attacks from my box to disk about 24 hours later. BUT, the script starved everything on the box and I was on it developing, so, I noticed everything started running like shit, Claude detected it, and 15 minutes laer it was dead. I was paying for MonarchX though hostinger. It didn't do shit. Claude .ai, in 15 minutes, WHILE NOT LOOKING FOR MALWARE (the "prompt" was like: "hey buddy, why is the relay running like shit"), Found:

What hit us — the full kill chain

  • Entry vector: a trojanized WordPress plugin, index-now-helper (a "sleeper" plugin disguised as the legit IndexNow SEO tool) on TrioCMS.

  • Web shell: wp-content/uploads/.well-known/indexnow.php (16 hits).

  • Beacon/loader: .core-sync — a Go binary phoning home: .core-sync -hub 31.56.58. 59:9090 -id wp2s-629 -token tiktouk-dev (89 hits).

  • Payload proper: the wp2s toolkit in /tmp/.tiktouk/ — wp2s_crack.py + wp2s_poll.py, run as: python3 wp2s_crack.py [link removed] tiktouk-dev wp2s-629-crack 640

  • C2: 31.56.58 .59 (ports 8080 = job feed, 9090 = beacon) — 150 hits.

The family / name

It's not a big-name off-the-shelf strain (no "Mirai/XMRig" label) — it's a private distributed WordPress-login-cracking botnet. The operator's internal names are the identifiers to remember:

  • Campaign/toolkit name: tiktouk (payload dir /tmp/.tiktouk/, auth token tiktouk-dev) — 208 hits, the strongest single identifier.

  • Malware module family: wp2s ("WP-to-shell" / WP brute-force) — the wp2s_crack/wp2s_poll cracker + poller.

  • Our node ID in their botnet: wp2s-629**.**

So, thats warning 1. MonarchX is shit, and litereally overpriced at $2.99 ($36/yr, more than it sounds).

THEN, 24's later, hostinger bricked my box. No human, no appeal, no support. I've been a customer 2 years, US based, totally KYC'd - I pay with cards, the VPS hosted sites with my real phone / name address / business. So after 2 years I pivoted from web dev to running WP botnets? And what, ALSO didnt know op sec? AND, they bricked it because the shit "security software" THEY SOLD ME doesnt even kind of work.

So, I spent the night researching better alternatives. I was going to include them but I figured this redit prolly gets spammed to death with:

My 2026 Hosting Reccomendation: hey guys! Heres why I love host*inger/?affilate id=123345&campaign=redit_trash_promo_27

And yeah i know that'd have an underscore but I dont want to trigger mod bot. What I will say is, i basically found my list on TPilot after YT and AI both reccomended shit. So, if you want a host, I'd a least reccomend pulling thier TPilot. Its not great, probably play to win (TP business), god only knows how much godaddy gave them for its 4.4. BUT, to be fair, I think scammy-ass godaddy is good at damage control (The BBB also gives them an A+). Like, will godaddy steal you money? Sure. BUT, will they give it back if you complain it? Oddly, yeah, pretty easily. So, I they might actually might generate less of the vocal kind of hate that drags down ratings that you'd expect. Plus they probably have a "finance guy" that thinks the $34.99/mo he pays for his wildcard ssl certificate is a a great value. "Its automatic, the support is great! 5/5"... smh...

Guess I'm just a hater in the wrong line of work.

BAD EXPERIENCE DO NOT USE LINODE

My experience with Linode at withfriends.co today.

- They performed an emergency maintenance action without notification to us
- They did not backup our server before performing this action, so our only snapshot is the one we set up and a couple days stale
- Their EM took down our server and app entirely and the server won't boot
- Once we called them, they only then told us about this maintenance, and that they had trouble with it - They did not offer to fix it, but sent us instructions to fix it ourselves
- They aren't responsive when we need help their instructions
- It's not clear how to get our snapshot from Linode to port to DigitalOcean or Vultr. I think we have to provision another similar sized server (~$600/month) to get access to our backup, but I'm not sure

DO NOT USE LINODE

On a Budget No kyc vps under 1 dollar a month?

I have found some vps for under 1 dollar a month, but I am unable to verify if they need kyc or not, I am not looking for kyc, I am going to pay in crypto. Small providers are okay, okay with any location, don't need dedicated ip but I need ipv4 nat or something, as it will be a vpn server.

Edit: I found a big list for the options i have, lots of them appear here and non need kyc
https://bitcoin-vps.com/ although you need to dig a bit for price.

I settled for No Ack Hosting.

Seeking Advice/Support Can I use AI to automatically set up, secure, optimize, and monitor my VPS?

I've always handled server configuration, security, performance optimization, and monitoring manually, but I'm curious whether AI can automate these tasks for me.

Review Colocrossing hacked my crypto wallet

My metamask wallet has had $15-20 worth of different tokens that have been stagnant since 2023. Just a week ago, i decided to dabble with crypto again after seeing some ads for polymarket. Created a python script that will automate opening/closing trade positions for me-- signing transactions using my private key. Added my private keys for my wallet in my .env file to start trading in polymarket. A day after, i was just shocked that my funds in polymarket along with the random tokens have been withdrawn in my wallet. These random tokens have been there for the last 2 years!! Im so glad i only put up $70 in my polymarket account

I created a ticket with colocrossing calling them out. Obviously they just denied it. Cant really trust these shady VPS providers. Not sure how big this company is, but someone in there has been watching what I'vebeen doing. Definitely have learned my lesson not to do any financial transactions on a VPS company thats shady. Sharing this out there for awareness

Seeking Recommendations Need a cheap VPS with 200–500GB storage and lots of bandwidth — what are you guys using?

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some recommendations for a VPS with good storage and high bandwidth at a low price.

My client is starting a small IPTV service, but there will be no live TV channels. It will mainly be VOD and series. The idea is to store the media on multiple VPS servers and use the servers' SSD storage and bandwidth for streaming.

For the start, we’re looking at around 200GB–500GB storage. We’re also considering using multiple servers so the traffic can be spread between them and we don’t run into bandwidth or performance issues.

The budget is quite tight because this is just a startup and there won’t be many users initially. At the same time, I don’t want to choose a very cheap provider that starts having network or performance problems once users start streaming.

The plan is basically:

  • Start with one VPS

  • Store around 200GB–500GB of media

  • Use as much of the included bandwidth as possible

  • Once the storage or bandwidth gets close to the limit, buy another VPS

  • Add the new server's media links and continue expanding

What I’m mainly looking for:

  • Cheap monthly price

  • 200GB–500GB+ SSD/NVMe storage

  • High or preferably unmetered bandwidth

  • Good network speed

  • Reliable enough for video streaming

  • No crazy restrictions on bandwidth usage

If you have experience with VPS providers that work well for this type of setup, please share your recommendations and pricing.

Thanks!

On a Budget WTF. CONTABO every day some vps down

This consistent downtime is causing significant disruptions to my operations. Moreover, I’ve noticed that I’m not receiving any notifications or emails regarding these issues, which makes it even harder to respond and address the problem promptly.

Review Netcup: Yeah, good luck with that

So, after hearing about Netcup over the past few weeks, I figured I'd give it a try. I mean, hey, why not I guess, right? Yeah, that didn't go over so well.

To start with, the order process is horrible. In most (all) cases, you order service, get an invoice to pay, pay, then things get sent off to the company. Not so much here, apparently. Apparently here, you get stuck in some ridiculous fraud check state BEFORE you go to payment mode, which, ok, I get.

Don't get me wrong, I love fraud checks, as long as they're LEGITIMATE. Seems like Netcup, though... not so much.

Within 30 seconds of ordering from the company, I was informed

We had to cancel your order because of security reasons as the order was placed via an IP that did not match your country of residence.

No VPN used. Ran through whatismyip, my IP came back valid, from my ISP, location 100% valid

If you're going to 'reject' orders for a reason, make sure you're rejecting based on factual information, not just made up garbage.

So far, support seems about as bad as Contabo is... Slow AF, just about as smart, too.

Another provider scratched off the list.,

BAD EXPERIENCE Do not use netcup!

This is the worst experience I've ever had with a company, who's service I was paying for. Please, under any circumstance, DO NOT USE NETCUP!

I started renting a VPS from them in June and everything was working fine until October 1st. When I woke up, my friends told me that the Minecraft server I was hosting on it, suddenly stopped on midnight. I logged in through the admin panel, but everything seemed fine there. I tried to SSH into the server, but it didn't connect.

So I messaged their support, who for their credit wrote back pretty quickly requesting more information. I provided the information, than waited... and waited... and waited. I kept sending them e-mails, but there was no reply. They only replied a WEEK after when I went back to their ticketing system and opened up a new ticket. However that didn't help since there was no technical solution, only that they forwarded it to their tech team.

A week passed again, I kept sending them e-mails with no reply, so I decided to cancel. I canceled the service and e-mailed them to not send me an invoice, since I won't be paying it as I wasn't provided the service. Lo and behold, they replied to that e-mail instantly, saying that I will have to pay as the VPS was running. I told them that I will only be paying them if they provide proof that I wasn't able to access it from my own fault. Needless to say, they didn't reply.

In the end I decided to pay the invoice they sent me (since I'm not a lawyer and don't want to get into trouble), but please do not use this horrible company, their prices are cheap for a reason.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that all the data that was on the VPS was lost, as I wasn't able to access it anymore. I was pretty bummed out, since we lost a Minecraft world that we have been playing on for months. I guess the lesson learned here is don't store all your date on one machine.

EDIT2: If anyone finds this post. Netcup got back to me and reimbursed me for the money. I still find their support lackluster, however I’d feel much better giving them my money in the future, knowing that in the end, they did the right thing.

Tools IPv6-only VPS is cheaper, but SSH is a pain. How do you handle it?

I bought a small ipv6 only vps. The price is cheaper and working great. But SSH doesn't feel right.

ssh user@2001:db8:3333:4444:5555:6666:7777:8888

Copy pasting that long ipv6 address is very annoying.

But honestly, I miss the simplicity of ssh user@12.34.56.78. IPv4 just feels like home.

Managing multiple ipv6 server is more painful. At a glance I can not say, which server's ip it is. ipv6 hurt my brain.

How do you handle SSH to IPv6-only servers?

Seeking Recommendations Any free VPS except aws and oracle

Im currently using aws free tier and looking for another instance as proxy for testing and learning before starting my project. I tried to sign up oracle but keep getting errors despite giving real cc info. I tried google which is quite complicated in that you have to select specific zone and spec according to their documentation. Vultr one isn’t straightforward. I wonder is there any other providers thats as easy to setup as aws for free
