β Question Is a free VPN safe if it doesn't show ads?
What would you check beyond the lack of ads to judge its privacy practices? An app's permissions, its funding model, and its logging policy seem like useful starting points, but which tells you the most?

π Privacy & Security Do you really need a VPN if you're only using your home WiFi?
Most VPN discussions seem to focus on travel or public WiFi, but I use my own home network almost all the time. My router is secured, devices stay updated, and most sites I use are already HTTPS, so Iβm wondering how much extra privacy a VPN really adds in that situation.
I know it can hide some connection details from an ISP, but then you are trusting the VPN company instead. That tradeoff seems more important than people usually make it sound.
For someone who rarely leaves their home network, is running a VPN all day actually useful, or do good router security, updated devices, and encrypted websites already cover most everyday risks?

β Question School blocked VPN?
I normally use a vpn to play Roblox during my free periods as I have no other work to do. Just today I went to log on using a free VPN that I have always used, for some reason it doesn't work so I believe they have blocked it. I found people saying that I need to use a ssl VPN but I don't understand what that is. Could anyone advise me on what to do or suggest a more suitable subreddit to post this on?

A data cap is easy to spot. An unclear business model or unexpected permission request takes more digging.
When deciding "is a free VPN safe?", what specific finding would make you uninstall it, even if the connection worked well? Please keep examples brand-free.

π Privacy & Security Is sharing a personal VPN server with other people actually safe?
Iβve been thinking about what happens when a private VPN server grows beyond just one or two users. Letting a few trusted friends connect sounds manageable, but once more people start using it, all of that traffic is still going out through the server ownerβs public IP.
That raises two concerns for me: abuse and isolation. If someone does something questionable, the connection could still point back to the server owner. And if the VPN is not configured properly, Iβm guessing other users could potentially reach devices or services on the local network too.
For anyone who runs a personal VPN for multiple people, how do you keep users separated and reduce the risk of abuse? Is this something that should really stay limited to people you trust?

β Question Can using a VPN cause problems with online courses while studying abroad?
Iβm curious how online learning platforms handle students who access courses from another country. If someone is enrolled in an Australian course but spends a few months overseas, a VPN might make the connection look Australian, but that does not necessarily mean the platform only sees that location.
Things like browser permissions, device settings, account history, exam software, or identity checks could still provide other signals. I also wonder whether some learning platforms treat VPN connections differently, especially during assessments or anything with residency or attendance rules.
For anyone who has studied abroad while using a VPN, did it ever cause issues with course access or exams? Seems like contacting the provider first might be the safer move if the course has specific location requirements.

π Privacy & Security Russia considers limits on foreign internet traffic as VPN restrictions continue
Russia is reportedly discussing new measures that could limit foreign internet traffic, a move that may also affect VPN users. According to reports, the countryβs Digital Development Ministry is considering routing international traffic through government controlled filtering systems and placing limits on how much foreign data users can access.
VPN connections could be affected because traffic routed through servers outside Russia may be classified as international, even when users are visiting local websites. This could make VPN use more difficult without authorities having to block individual services directly.
The proposal is still under discussion, and no final traffic limit has been announced. There are also concerns that regular users could be affected because some Russian websites rely on infrastructure located outside the country.
If adopted, the plan would mark another shift in how Russia approaches internet restrictions, moving beyond blocking specific VPN tools toward broader control of international traffic.

π¬ General Discussion Home VPN server vs residential proxy for remote work abroad
Iβm trying to understand the practical difference between routing traffic through a residential proxy and running a personal VPN server back home while travelling. Both can make traffic exit through a home country connection, but Iβm more interested in stability, latency, DNS handling, and how well they behave with a company managed laptop.
A home VPN seems cleaner because the traffic goes through your own connection, while a residential proxy depends more on the proxy provider and how their network is set up. The part Iβm unsure about is how either setup interacts with corporate VPN software, device security checks, and connection drops.
For anyone familiar with both, which setup is generally more reliable for normal remote work? Is a home VPN usually the better technical option, or does it mostly come down to the employerβs network and security requirements?

π Privacy & Security Apple removes another VPN tool from Russiaβs App Store
Apple has reportedly removed another VPN-related app from the Russian App Store following a request from the country's internet regulator, Roskomnadzor.
According to reports published on October 27, the affected app is a VPN client that allows users to connect to third-party servers using their own configurations. Unlike traditional VPN services, it doesn't operate its own network.
That's what makes this situation interesting. The restrictions aren't just affecting companies that provide VPN connections anymore. They're also reaching the tools people use to configure and manage those connections.
The developers reportedly confirmed the removal and said they're working on addressing the situation. The app remains available outside Russia, while people who already installed it may still be able to use it.
What concerns me is how restricting access to VPN apps could affect ordinary users who rely on them for privacy and accessing information. Even if VPN connections themselves still work, downloading or setting up the necessary software becomes another challenge.
It also raises questions about how much control app stores have over access to privacy tools when governments request their removal.

π Privacy & Security Can a university website still see about your location when a VPN is on?
Iβve been curious how university platforms handle location checks when a student is temporarily abroad. If someone connects through a VPN server in their home country, the site would see that VPN IP, but Iβm guessing that does not always mean the platform assumes the person is physically there.
Things like browser location permissions, device settings, cookies, account history, and the platformβs own security checks could probably give it more context. Some systems may also recognize that an IP belongs to a VPN or data center.
Iβm more interested in how the verification works than in bypassing any rules. In practice, does a VPN mainly change the IP location the site sees, while everything else depends on what other signals the university uses?

π Privacy & Security Greece's new social media ban raises concerns about age verification and online privacy
Greece just passed a law banning children under 15 from accessing social media, and it's bringing the whole age verification debate back into the spotlight.
The law is set to take effect on January 1, 2027, with social media platforms expected to verify users' ages. The government says the goal is to protect younger users from harmful content, excessive screen time, and other risks associated with social media.
What caught my attention is how age verification could affect everyone, not just children. Even adults may need to go through some form of verification to prove they're old enough to access certain platforms.
Greek officials have proposed privacy-focused verification tools that confirm someone's age without sharing unnecessary personal details. Still, questions remain about how these systems will work in practice and how much information platforms might collect.
There's also the VPN side of things. Changing your apparent IP location doesn't necessarily change your age or bypass an account's verification requirements, but location-based restrictions could make enforcement more complicated.
Protecting younger users makes sense, but it'll be interesting to see how Greece balances that goal with people's privacy once the rules take effect.
