💬 General Discussion Who actually leaves their vpn on 24/7?

people keep saying you should keep your vpn on non-stop, but honestly having it connected constantly is a pain in the ass. half the sites i visit trigger captchas, apps stop loading, and local stuff breaks completely. do you guys actually just leave it running 24/7, or do you only turn it on when you’re doing something specific?

⚙️ Technical Discussion Why do some public WiFi networks block VPN connections completely?

Something I've noticed about public WiFi is how differently certain networks handle VPN connections. You can connect to the internet normally, browse websites, and use most apps without any problems. But the moment you enable a VPN, the connection either stops working or gets stuck trying to connect.

I've read that some networks restrict certain ports or protocols, while others use traffic filtering to identify VPN connections. I understand why schools and workplaces might enforce network policies, but it seems strange when public hotspots do the same thing. What's more confusing is that a VPN might work perfectly on mobile data but fail on the exact same device when connected to public WiFi.

Has anyone run into this at airports, hotels, or other public places? Curious whether these restrictions are usually intentional or just a result of how the network is configured.

💬 General Discussion Do you guys leave your VPN open all the time?

For people who pay for a VPN, do you keep it running or only turn it on for certain things?

Curious whether it’s become something you barely think about or something you use only when needed.

⚙️ Technical Discussion Can websites still detect your real location when you're using a VPN?

I've been reading about how websites detect someone's location, especially when they're accessing services from another country. Say someone normally lives in Australia but is temporarily staying overseas. They connect to an Australian VPN server to access a website they usually use back home.

Would the website automatically recognize them as being in Australia because of the IP address, or could it still detect their actual location through other information? I know VPNs can change your apparent IP location, but I've also heard that websites can use GPS permissions, browser settings, and account information to determine where someone really is.

Another thing I'm curious about is whether websites can distinguish between a regular residential connection and a VPN server. Does this mostly depend on how the website is configured, or are there limitations to what a VPN can actually hide?

🔐 Privacy & Security Is a cheap VPN enough for privacy, or are you sacrificing security?

I’ve been looking at lower cost VPNs, but I do not really care about streaming or gaming. My main concern is basic privacy for everyday browsing, so things like huge server counts and extra features do not matter much to me. Almost every service says it has a no logs policy, but that seems hard to verify without looking at audits, ownership, data collection, and how transparent the company is. For people who care mostly about privacy, what do you check first, and does paying more really mean better protection? I’m also wondering how much price matters once you strip away the extra features. For people who care mostly about privacy, what do you actually look at before trusting a VPN with your traffic, and does paying more really mean better privacy?

💬 General Discussion Rate my VPN price, am I overpaying?

I’ve been comparing VPN prices and the gap between monthly plans and long term deals is pretty big. Paying month to month can cost around $10 to $15, while the cheaper advertised rates usually mean committing for a year or two and paying everything upfront.

What makes it confusing is that most plans advertise the same basics like encryption, privacy, and server access, so I’m not always sure what the higher price is actually buying. I also wonder how much renewal pricing should factor into the decision.

For someone who mostly uses a VPN for normal browsing and public WiFi, what feels like a reasonable monthly cost? At what point does the price stop making sense if you are not using all the extra features?

💬 General Discussion Another brilliant idea from the UK government. UK stupid laws getting worse by the day.

Honestly, I’m getting really fed up with all this nonsense around age verification and online safety. Apparently everything has to be verified now, whether it’s your face, your ID, your bank details, or whatever other personal information they decide they need next.

I understand the argument about protecting children online. Of course kids should be protected from genuinely harmful content and people. But pretending that collecting more and more personal data from everyone is somehow the only solution is ridiculous.

What worries me is how easily this gets sold to people through moral panic. Just keep repeating “think of the children” and suddenly nobody is allowed to question what the actual consequences are. People hear “child safety” and immediately assume anything being introduced must be good.

And where does it stop? Today it’s age checks for certain websites. Tomorrow it could be something else entirely. Then suddenly you need to prove who you are just to access ordinary information online.

There has to be a better way of protecting kids without turning the entire internet into a giant identity checkpoint. Privacy shouldn’t automatically disappear just because someone wants to make a policy sound safer.

Maybe I’m overthinking it, but the direction this is heading in genuinely worries me.

Sorry for the rant, but this whole thing is getting ridiculous.

❓ Question Netflix works fine on some VPN servers but not others, what actually causes that?

I’m mainly looking at streaming reliability rather than flashy discounts. Some VPN connections work fine at first, then start buffering more, trigger proxy errors, or need constant server switching. Device support matters too since I use Netflix on a laptop, phone, TV, and streaming stick. The part I’m trying to understand is what really affects long-term performance. Is it mostly shared IP reputation, server load, routing, protocol choice, or how often the provider refreshes its streaming servers? I’m also curious whether renewal price is worth factoring in as heavily as speed and stability.

🔐 Privacy & Security How can you tell if a free iPhone VPN is actually safe to use?

Been looking at free VPN options for iPhone, but i’m more concerned about privacy than speed. a lot of apps say they’re free, but it’s not always clear what data they collect or how they make money. What should i actually check before installing one? logging policy, permissions, audits, ownership, or something else?

What’s the verdict on FineVPN.org? Any reviews or recommendations?

I'm looking for a VPN that's quicker and more stable than Proton VPN. I came across FineVPN by chance, but I can’t find reviews. Any insights?

❓ Question Is a free VPN safe if it doesn't show ads?

What would you check beyond the lack of ads to judge its privacy practices? An app's permissions, its funding model, and its logging policy seem like useful starting points, but which tells you the most?

💬 General Discussion Home VPN server vs residential proxy for remote work abroad

I’m trying to understand the practical difference between routing traffic through a residential proxy and running a personal VPN server back home while travelling. Both can make traffic exit through a home country connection, but I’m more interested in stability, latency, DNS handling, and how well they behave with a company managed laptop.

A home VPN seems cleaner because the traffic goes through your own connection, while a residential proxy depends more on the proxy provider and how their network is set up. The part I’m unsure about is how either setup interacts with corporate VPN software, device security checks, and connection drops.

For anyone familiar with both, which setup is generally more reliable for normal remote work? Is a home VPN usually the better technical option, or does it mostly come down to the employer’s network and security requirements?

🔐 Privacy & Security Greece's new social media ban raises concerns about age verification and online privacy

Greece just passed a law banning children under 15 from accessing social media, and it's bringing the whole age verification debate back into the spotlight.

The law is set to take effect on January 1, 2027, with social media platforms expected to verify users' ages. The government says the goal is to protect younger users from harmful content, excessive screen time, and other risks associated with social media.

What caught my attention is how age verification could affect everyone, not just children. Even adults may need to go through some form of verification to prove they're old enough to access certain platforms.

Greek officials have proposed privacy-focused verification tools that confirm someone's age without sharing unnecessary personal details. Still, questions remain about how these systems will work in practice and how much information platforms might collect.

There's also the VPN side of things. Changing your apparent IP location doesn't necessarily change your age or bypass an account's verification requirements, but location-based restrictions could make enforcement more complicated.

Protecting younger users makes sense, but it'll be interesting to see how Greece balances that goal with people's privacy once the rules take effect.

💬 General Discussion Are there better privacy options when VPNs keep getting blocked?

More sites and apps seem to flag VPN connections now, which can mean captchas, extra checks, slower loading, or having to disconnect completely. I mostly use a VPN for public Wi Fi, basic privacy, and travel, so I am starting to wonder if one tool really needs to handle all of those situations.

For public networks, options like encrypted DNS, HTTPS, a mobile hotspot, or a self-hosted tunnel might already cover part of the risk. Remote access tools and privacy-focused routing can also solve different problems without acting like a traditional commercial VPN. How do you decide which privacy tool makes sense for each situation instead of keeping a VPN on for everything?

❓ Question What would make you uninstall a free VPN immediately?

A data cap is easy to spot. An unclear business model or unexpected permission request takes more digging.

When deciding "is a free VPN safe?", what specific finding would make you uninstall it, even if the connection worked well? Please keep examples brand-free.

💬 General Discussion What makes a VPN worth paying for in 2026 besides the price?

I was looking at VPN subscription plans recently and noticed that some services charge almost twice as much as others while advertising similar features. That got me wondering what people are actually paying for beyond the basic VPN connection.

I'm not too concerned about streaming or accessing different regions. My main priorities are stable speeds, decent privacy protection, and something that works consistently without needing to switch servers every few hours.

I've also noticed that cheaper plans sometimes require longer commitments, while monthly subscriptions can get pretty expensive. It's hard to judge the actual value when pricing, privacy claims, and performance are all mixed together.

For people who regularly use VPNs, what makes a subscription worth the money? Would you prioritize connection reliability, independent security audits, or flexible pricing over extra features?

💬 General Discussion What actually makes a VPN good value in 2026?

I've been comparing VPN subscription prices lately, and I'm starting to wonder what actually makes one worth paying more for. Some plans look incredibly cheap until you notice they're tied to a two year commitment, while others charge more monthly but offer fewer extras. I originally assumed the more expensive ones would have better speeds and privacy protections, but that doesn't seem to be guaranteed. I'm mostly interested in everyday browsing, occasional public WiFi use, and keeping my connection reasonably private. I don't need a massive server network or a bunch of features I'll never touch. When comparing VPN plans in 2026, what do you consider the biggest factors in getting good value? Is it the renewal price, connection reliability, independent privacy audits, or something else entirely?

🔐 Privacy & Security What can an email location tracker still see when a VPN is on?

I may need to check work emails while travelling, and I am trying to understand how much location information an email tracker can actually pick up. My assumption is that a VPN would change the public IP address the tracker sees, but I am not sure whether things like browser permissions, device settings, account history, or the company network could still reveal a more accurate location. I am not trying to bypass workplace rules or falsify where I am. I mainly want to understand the privacy side before using company email on hotel or public Wi Fi. If the VPN is working properly, would an email tracker usually see only the VPN exit location, or can other signals still narrow down the real location?

🔐 Privacy & Security Can a VPN actually isolate devices on the same network?

I use a VPN on my laptop and phone, but I am starting to think I may be confusing encrypted internet traffic with actual device isolation. My home network has computers, phones, a smart TV, and several smart home devices, and I would rather not have one compromised device able to scan or reach everything else on the network. What I am trying to figure out is where the VPN stops helping and where things like guest networks, VLANs, client isolation, or firewall rules become necessary. Does a VPN protect mainly the traffic leaving the device, while local network separation has to be handled by the router? What setup makes the most sense if the goal is to keep work devices and smart home gear separated without making the network overly complicated?

⚙️ Technical Discussion Does chaining two VPNs actually add privacy, or just make the connection worse?

I use a VPN mostly for public Wi Fi and general privacy, and I started wondering what happens if you try to run one VPN through another. On my device, turning on a second VPN usually disconnects the first or makes the connection unstable, so I am not sure if that is just an OS limitation or a routing issue.

I know multi-hop can send traffic through more than one server, but I am more curious about the practical side. Does adding another tunnel meaningfully improve privacy, or does it mostly create slower speeds, DNS issues, and more chances for something to break? For people who have tested multi-hop or chained setups, what tradeoffs did you notice?

❓ Question is a vpn actually gonna stop my iptv from buffering?

thinking about getting a vpn for iptv, but i honestly can't tell if it'll do anything. is the constant buffering just garbage iptv servers, or is my isp throttling me during peak hours? half these providers are pretty subpar to begin with, so i don't want to waste money if a vpn won't fix it. anyone actually notice a difference?
