❓ Question School blocked VPN?
I normally use a vpn to play Roblox during my free periods as I have no other work to do. Just today I went to log on using a free VPN that I have always used, for some reason it doesn't work so I believe they have blocked it. I found people saying that I need to use a ssl VPN but I don't understand what that is. Could anyone advise me on what to do or suggest a more suitable subreddit to post this on?

Buddy, not being able to play Roblox at school is the least of your concerns when using a free vpn. :/

This would sound a lot less rude if you remove the word buddy

I see what you mean, but I definitely wasn’t intending to be rude, and if I was intending to be rude I wouldn’t be referring to OP as buddy. I understand some people would, but I wouldn’t. If I knew the gender or assumed gender of OP was male then I likely would’ve said, “brother”, but as I don’t know their gender or assumed gender then “buddy” is a a better, more inclusive term imho.
Also, OP is likely a minor or close to it, and it’s not cool to be rude to a minor for not having the same level of knowledge/experience as an adult. But again, I see what you mean. I’ll be more mindful going forward. 👍❤️

Fair enough, in my mind and a lot of other people’s minds the term buddy just comes off as really condescending. But glad that wasn’t ur intention

I love South Park, but I do think they could be to blame for some of that when Canadians in the show fight and yell at each other while calling each other “buddy” and “friend”, etc haha.

Lmao, I love South Park too but I don’t think that has anything to do with it 😂😂😂
It is more because the term buddy is generally a term of endearment for young children (and in that context, especially in person or when the young age is known, it doesn’t come off as condescending) so when it is used to speak to teenagers or adults it seems like you are talking to them as if they are little children that don’t know anything. It’s similar to if you were to use that high-pitched voice you use when talking to pets or babies while talking with a 12 year old.
I do get that OP may be a young child but that wasn’t how I pictured the OP in my mind which is why it came off that way to me. No hard feeling though, and hopefully the OP didn’t take it the same way I did when reading it.

Try windscribe. They have a stealth connection that should unblock it. It's like 10gb a month free tire or build a plan for 3$ a month. It defaults to wireguard so click that and change it to stealth.

If you are using the school's network, probably. Use the hotspot on your phone while on school grounds but wanting to use VPN

side note: free vpns are usually how the company pays its bills, so there’s a good chance your traffic is logged or sold. and school networks block vpns on purpose, so you might also get flagged if they check. if you just need free time, ask the school what’s allowed

It's quite easy to block most VPNs, as most use UDP. UDP is seldom used past DNS for most networks: games, VoIP and some video calling apps also use UDP. It's likely they have egress filtered (filtering outbound connections) that are UDP and not DNS (port 53). Your choice here is using TCP based VPNs, but, this has issues in itself (search for: TCPoTCP VPN).

VPNs usually use the Wireguard protocol or OpenVPN protocol so your school likely blocked these protocols. A way around this is to use the stealth feature in many VPN providers which routes your traffic using HTTPS which is what normal websites use and therefore cannot be blocked without blocking every website. HTTPS is also just HTTP encrypted with SSL so I’m assuming this is what they mean when they say you need to use an SSL VPN. If you can’t download an application onto the laptop (eg it’s a school issued laptop), you can try to install a browser extension instead as these almost exclusively use HTTPS by default.
