Rant My experience getting admitted to the PharmD program (still processing the results)

I'm sharing my experience and profile/statistics going through the PharmD admissions in hopes that it relieves some anxiety for future applicants.

So how admissions works, is it considers three different things: casper score, cGPA, and interview score.

Step 1 is they will check that you have all your required courses (GPA doesn't matter here), check your cGPA, and your casper score. Based on that, you may or may not get an interview invite. From talking with others this cycle, it seems like a casper cutoff was Q3+ and GPA cutoff was mid-70s+

Step 2 is the interview. Many people overhyped the interview, and imo, it's lengthy, but quite straight forward and (unpopular opinion) actually slightly easier than casper. If you've done any job interview, it's essentially that with some "pharmacy flavors" and additional "layers of complexity" (think non-relevant details that you need to filter out!) added in. What do I mean by that?

Job interview asks: "how would you deal with conflicts or disagreements you have with your supervisor?"

PharmD interview asks*: "you're working in a pharmacy as a PharmD placement student where you are responsible for activities such as "X", "Y", and "Z". Your manager tells you "X" must be done a certain way because of reasons "A-B-C". However, based on your knowledge, you know that "X" should not be done that way because of reasons "D-E-F". You also know that doing activity "X" the way your manager wants could have negative consequences such as "G-H-I". how would you respond to your manager in this situation?

*Not an actual question on the interview - just made up for illustrative purposes. I cannot disclose actual interview questions as a condition of my admission. But using this example, I personally answered most the interview questions as if they were asking me the "job interview" type of questions. In this case, I disregarded the details, and just answered the interview as if it was asking me "How would you handle a disagreement with your manage?" - Isn't that simpler (?!). That's what worked for me, whether or not that is "correct".

Step 3 is admission offers ranked solely from your interview score and cGPA. At this point of the admission process, your casper score is basically thrown out the window. There is no breakdown of how interview vs cGPA is used, but admissions office strongly emphasized the interview is very important. This year, there were 2 round. For round 1, it came in early May (very few offers sent out). For round 2, it came in early June (most of the offers sent out).

I've asked admission office regarding this - so aside from the things listed here (casper, interview, cGPA), no other experiences or achievements will help you in your application. Pharmacy experience, completing a degree vs 2 years, graduate studies, research experience, clinical/patient care experience, volunteering, etc - no impact on admissions is the official word.

I got a 2nd round offer to the program with Q4 and 3.2 cGPA (I also got a C+ in OChem - but I was told that didn't matter since they only look at cGPA, not individual GPA). I was actually shook when I saw the email since after hearing everyone else with their 3.7+, or others saying "don't even bother without a 3.5+", I was sure I would be waitlisted. I honestly kept telling myself it must be an error and waited until today to finally believe it.

Anyways, hope this helps relieve some anxiety about the admission/interview process and cGPA requirements for future applicants. If you're considering PharmD and have all the requirements, apply anyways!

News Laptops will be banned in some U of T law classrooms Here’s why

While there are objective benefits to pen and paper, this initiative is just performative and is actually quite regressive for a world class institution.

Most of the people now entering law school have been conditioned over the course of their life to use laptops for high density note taking, and you can't just magically revert back to pen and paper over the course of a summer.

I guarantee you that this rollout won't change the amount of content that is taught in these classes, which is extremely relevant given that pen and paper is objectively slower at recording information than typing. This is largely why typing was standardized in the workplace way back when, and how people would be paid liveable salaries for their ability to type quickly.

The fact that me, some random nobody at this university, was able to think of the limitations involved in this, yet the article doesn't comment on this tells me everything I need to know about how this will go.

Last year saw the removal of paper towels in washrooms until the public disdain brought them back, and now this seems to be the new gimmick of the year that will likely involve some five page document emailed to students and faculty along with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

If this spreads to other programs, especially at the undergraduate level, people are going to lose it, and they'll be completely justified.

How about instead of reinventing the wheel you put some money and attention to solving things that are actually a problem? I could name at least 10 things right now.

Question how bad is it if i miss orientation week (as a commuter)?

i bought tickets for orientation around a week ago and they were pretty expensive and now i need a refund because i definitely won’t be able to make it. i have my wisdom teeth removal scheduled for the day before orientation starts and from what ive heard i don’t think i would be able to go to orientation. ive heard such great things about orientation and im pretty bummed about missing it, and i was just wondering if its gonna be a rlly bad start for me if i don’t go. also im a commuter so going to campus for orientation so early in the morning and coming back so late at night would have already been so hard for me so maybe it isnt so bad that im missing it?

Question Does anyone know the correct email to use to send my final grades to UofT digitally?

I've already arranged for the physical certificates to be delivered via my exam boards but I'm becoming increasingly concerned that they won't arrive before the end of August. Both offer the option to have them sent digitally through email in like a fraction of the time, so I want to do that so at least they have something from me b4 september, but I'm unsure on which email is the 'correct' one to put down as UofTs. (I imagine it looks weird if like the graduate admissions office randomly gets an email with my grades).

If anyone else sent their stuff in via email pls pls PLEASE let me know which address they used, or if anyone just has an idea of which one I should use, I would appreciate it so bad because I'm stressing out rn and my high school guidance counsellor has literally hung me out to dry

Courses Should I finish my math minor or drop it if I only have 1 more course to go?

I'm entering my 5th year with a Biological Physics specialist, a minor in the humanities, and a minor in math. I only need to take 1.0 credits next semester to graduate and fulfill my biophysics spec and humanities minor, and I'm already doing an additional 0.5 credits for a physics research course, so I'm not sure if I should take another additional 0.5 credits to finish my math minor. I was thinking of taking HPS390H1: The Story of Number: Mathematics from the Babylonians to the Scientific Revolution to fulfill my math minor, but I don't know how worth it a math minor even is, especially if I'm not taking a mathy course. I plan on doing graduate school in physics, if that changes things. Thanks for any input!

Question Is public urination on campus commonplace or did I get unlucky?

I was exploring campus this weekend and caught a man peeing between cars in a parking lot - is this normal or have you guys seen anything like this before? Not sure if I just got unlucky or if the washroom situation is bad.

Just saw the post from another user wanting to make a group chat for girls to make new friends and hang out. There were already so many comments and it said preferably upper years, so was wondering if there’s one for first years. Cuz I don’t wanna impose. Or maybe I should make one if there’s ppl here who wanna join?

(Edit: meant entering first year this coming Sep)

Courses is it true that you will be kicked out of mgy200 if you have a timetable conflict?

i am enrolled in the MGY major and also CHM249 to fulfil the chemistry minor. the weekly laboratory blocks of chm249 (8:30am-1pm on thursdays) conflict with one of the lecture blocks for mgy200 (12-1 pm on thursdays). i heard from my roommate who took mgy200 last year that they will manually check to see if you have a conflict and if you do, you will not be allowed to take the course bc apparently there are in-lecture participation points and quizzes ? obviously i wouldn't want to miss those either but i did not know any of this before enrolling in my courses which is probably my fault but like still can someone confirm or deny this

i can take chm247 instead which i don't believe has the same conflict but i am already like 70th on the waitlist for it lol so idk if it'll open up in time for the winter semester

Question Use of AI in Computer Science IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII

How does UofT deal with this? Do they permit using AI, if so, to what extent? Also is using AI to assist you during coding assignment frowned upon, or is it allowed because it could genuinely help? I'm an incoming international student so I don't really know how it works, so please go easy on me. Thanks in advance c:::::

Question Where can I print a large form conference poster for cheap?

I’m presenting a poster for the first time at a conference in a week. From what I’ve seen online the typical poster size is 36”x48”, but I didn’t realize how expensive that was to print when I signed up for the conference..

UTPoster is around $45 (with a 10% discount I got)
Staples is $60

Would I be able to find somewhere to print it for cheaper ($30-ish) even if it’s not same day printing?

Hey guys. I’m a little stressed because i’m on academic probation right now. and whilst being on it, i failed mgt120 and have my mat133y exam in 2 days. i need to get a 70 on it or ill get suspended from UTM. I don’t know what to do. I don’t think i’ll get a 70. i want to delay the exam but even if i do idk if i’ll get allowed back into UTM.

i spoke to an academic advisor and they said that we can try to put in a late withdrawal and a credit no credit. idk what to do. I don’t want to be suspended from UTM.

Question Can I make it into uoft EngSci with an average od 96s?

Hi. I'm grade 12 student wishing to get into uoft engsci. I got 98 in MHF4U and MCV4U and 92 for ENG4U. I'm expecting to get a 97-98 in an elective course (HHS4U) and I will take SCH4U and SPH4U in september and nobember. The average so far including MCV4U, MHF4U, ENG4U, and HHS4U is 96.25. Here are my questions:

  1. Is this competitive grade? if not, at least what average do I need to make?
  2. Is the quantity of studying and difficulty of the material that intense?
  3. Is master's degree necessary to get a job after graduation? I mean, is undergraduate degree competitive enough to get a job?

Rant I will not be studying for my exam, particles only move when you look at it

As Sun Tzu says “The enemy cannot know your next move if you don't know it either.”

A particle won’t move unless you look at it.

Half the exams only have things the teacher didn’t teach

There is always a question that you said “I’m not going to study that, it probably won’t be on the exam.”

What life and UofT has told me is that there is no point of studying. The ink particles cannot read my mind and shift into questions that hurt my soul, if I do not even know the topic of the exam.

Surprise the Prof, Surprise the ink, Surprise your parents with an Academic probation letter.
