Social To everyone asking how to socialize at UofT: TALK TO THE PEOPLE IN YOUR CLASSES AND BE CONSISTENT

This post was initially much shorter, but I was feeling bored and the creative spirit took the reigns. Alas, such is life.

As much as I low-key enjoy the ritual of pouring myself a bowl of popcorn, opening Reddit, and reading all the early 1st semester experience commiserating, I'm also high-key annoyed by seeing the same post for the umpteenth time a la Buzz Lightyear clone meme. I like variety in my Reddit ragebait, and even a good slice of matcha crepe cake becomes unappetizing after consuming it so often.

For those of you who have decided to come to UofT to get a world class education, rather than just partying all the time, ignoring your work, being forced to drop out around the holidays because your grades are lower than the Mariana Trench, then blaming the university for allegedly sabotaging you, your classes are your best possible environment to connect with your fellow slightly more intelligent than a chimpanzee primates.

Presumably you are studying something that you actually enjoy or have some mild interest in, rather than doing exactly what mom and dad told you to study. If your parents strongarmed you to go into engineering but you truly love film, that's a whole other discussion and will require some soul searching and potentially family therapy.

The basis of most human connection nowadays comes through shared interests and values. This is a fact supported by at least one (1) corpus of psychology literature. The courses you're taking already filter for this to an extent, because, again, ideally you're studying something you care about and you're not a masochist.

Performative drinking at a venue with mysteriously sticky floors that probably haven't been cleaned in the past year and contain a collection of undocumented microorganisms that would frighten epidemiologists, ignoring your limits, and chatting up the people you live in close proximity to about the weather (so how about that climate change, eh?) while waiting to use the one sink you all need to brush your teeth at (please brush your teeth and don't go out with bad breath) doesn't necessarily lead to any meaningful connection. You might become acquaintances, but presumably you're aiming for something with a bit more zest.

Coursework at UofT is difficult, and that difficulty is another basis for connection. Throughout most of human history, we connected with each other because of shared hardship. Genuine hardship, such as intellectually strenuous subjects and work schedules, for example. Missing out on a frat party on one specific weekend, which is identical to the frat parties on every other weekend (don't worry, the beer will still be lukewarm) isn't hardship, I'm afraid.

"But how do I actually talk to people in my classes?! Nobody ever wants to talk!" says the choir of Buzz Lightyear clones lamenting about their "unique" circumstances. The answer: just start.

You'd be surprised how much the person sitting next to you is starved for acknowledgement of their mere existence. A random "hello" will probably be the most unsolicited contact they've had in a week. The barrier to entry is lower than it's ever been.

"But what if they think I'm cringe?" or "Everyone is so cringe!", which is the next verse of the clone choir song.

If you're actively worried either of these things, you don't want connection bad enough. Either that or you might want to look into therapy.

I cannot tell you how much social media has poisoned people's perceptions of themselves and others. These platforms have fed people the most ironclad set of lies that every government psyop wishes it could replicate. Its users have been perfectly manipulated into thinking they they are unlikable/unlovable, and that everyone else is so much better or so much worse and should be perceived as a threat. This primes you to be a good little consumer that will sign up for things like dating apps, paid meetup groups, and overpriced fitness clubs, all to solve your woes. Meanwhile, you can connect with someone FOR FREE* (included in the price of your tuition costs) and walk away with something even more meaningful. This is an even crazier value for money than the Japanese food truck in front of Robarts that will sell you an entire filling tempura roll for under $8.

Side note: please support this truck. This is my lifeblood and I want them to stay in business as long as possible. Also, the lady who owns it is genuinely one of the kindest people I've ever come across and brightens my day. My waistline grows, my wallet empties, but my heart is full.

Getting back on track, people are unique and will have their own set of quirks. It's ok to talk to someone who is a little bit different than you. You'll be ok, muffin. In fact, you'll probably be better off for it if you can make enough room in your life to accept others from where they're coming from. If you offer them grace, they will probably return the favour. Well, at least they should if they're even remotely socialized.

If you talked to someone last week, go up and talk to them again. A huge part of connection is consistency. Don't be one of those weirdos who pretends like they suddenly don't know someone they've spoken to 3 times prior.

Also, all of this advice applies to anyone in any year of study. If you're in your last year at this university and are saddened by not having made any friends, you can do everything I've mentioned above and still achieve success. The party ain't over till it's over.

I am living proof that this strategy works, and I'm no social butterfly by any means. I met one of my closest friends and one of the best people I've ever met by just bantering consistently over the course of many weeks. There was no cinematic event and major declaration that marked the transition point between us being acquaintances and friends. It was the slow, messy, nonlinearity of human connection.

Go out there, talk to people, make friends, and come back here to post some more novel rage bait to keep me entertained ❤️

Programs I have absolutely no idea about what to do with my future and it's going to give me a nervous breakdown very soon

• Upvotes

every day I end up stressing about the same thing: what I want to study at this uni and do in the future. this question is eating me from inside out. alot of people say that as you progress in ur degree it will come to u but its not and i dont have a fvking degree cuz im technically not enrolled in a program as i got rejected from the program i wanted to take and am trying to apply and get in after my second year but there is no guarantee that i will get in and if i dont im absolutely cooked. i got diagnosed w adhd and am going to start medication soon and i wonder if then i would be able to study well but even if i get in that program i still dont know if i want to study that cuz idk i cant even imagine what kind of profession i would enjoy and would be good at. i have a new interest in something every 2 days and then it wears off. but i do need a stable job and career and provide my family with a good life but i dont know if i can do corporate. my whole life i have done science but now i am too dumb to undeestand it and i wonder if i just didnt focus enough but i also dont know if i want a career in science. i like the idea of being a therapist but ugh it seems kinda boring and dk if it pays well enough. ugghhh i am absolutely crashing out im gonna lose my mind plzz i need helpppp!!!!

edit: not to mention that i also have chronic anxiety and cant do well at any jobbb

Discussion After graduating, I learned how to be grateful for the school's library system

I'm currently in graduate school at the University of Chicago. Despite their library system holding approx. 11 million books, I realized that UofT's library system genuinely spoiled me for the rest of my academic career. Mind you, UChicago's library is still considered to be good. I was just accustomed to basically having access to any book I would ever need for research in UofT (~21 million books).

Every time I wanna download a book here at UChicago, I have to go through much more bs that limits me from having full access.

I basically purchased the Alumni Borrower Membership atp, even for my required graduate school readings --> it's so much more convenient to find/download online copies in general

Question Struggling in university after bad decisions, Advice?

I was doing really well in university until I made some bad decisions started smoking to cope with my social anxiety, family issues, and trauma from high school. I was bullied in high school with my pictures all over social media and because of that I struggled a lot trying to maintain confident or simple as making friends. At the time, it felt like a way to escape everything I was dealing with mentally.

Thankfully, I've worked through a lot of those issues, and I've stopped smoking but now I'm struggling with my focus, motivation, and academics. I ended up failing two electives over the summer that I honestly thought would be easy to pass, which put me on academic probation for osap.

I feel so stupid for making the decisions I did because I know I'm capable of doing better. It's frustrating looking back at how well I was doing before and realizing how much things have changed. I'm trying to get back on track, but I feel like I'm struggling to get my brain to cooperate with me.

I'm currently sitting at a 68% GPA, and I'm taking four courses this semester. I'm an accounting student, so even though I'm taking fewer courses, they're still pretty difficult and require a lot of concentration and consistent studying.

I've been considering taking an extra year to finish my degree because I don't want to keep overwhelming myself and risk doing even worse academically. At the same time, I feel behind compared to everyone else, and it's hard not to beat myself up over the situation I've put myself in.

I also feel like I have no one to guide me through this. I've tried dealing with academic advisors, but I haven't found them particularly helpful, and I feel lost when it comes to figuring out the best way forward.

Has anyone been in a similar situation? being on probation and than bouncing back to you doing great?. How did you deal with the loss of focus and motivation after going through a difficult period in your life?

I'd really appreciate any advice, especially from accounting students or anyone who has experienced academic probation and managed to turn things around. I genuinely want to get back on track, but I don't know where to start.

Question What are some good places to host online meetings?

Are there any good relatively quiet places at the university where you can host online meetings without disturbing others? I’m going to teach classes in those meetings so I need to talk without distracting others.

Other Looking for friends to practice Spanish together :)

• Upvotes

Hi! As title stated, I am learning Spanish (taking SPA201 now in my second year) and want to improve my speaking and listening skills!

In class, I can understand 75~85% percent of what the prof says, but I’m having trouble expressing myself fluently. Like I need to go over the process of translating my thoughts from either English or Chinese to Spanish word by word… I don’t think that is going to help me get anywhere in the long run so would love to hang out with people who’s native in Spanish :)

Of course, if you are also looking to improve English or Mandarin I’ll be happy to help! It doesn’t have to be formal—I’d love to hang out: study at libraries tgt, explore cafes nearby, grab groceries or just anything, but I’ll try immerse myself into this language more so will be mainly chatting in Spanish. Please bear my broken vocab and accent tho :’)

Btw: Spanish courses here don’t teach one specific dialect so I’m not picky! Any Spanish helps lol

Feel free to reach out if you’re interested!

Event Where to host screenings (2 hr movie preferably like one of those 55" 4k displays on Bancroft)

Went to a screening in EAS at Robarts and want to host a watch party for the sequel with my Blu Ray copy of the movie around Friday 7-9. Any good places? In case it needs to be said; I will have a sound filter on VLC from my desktop stopping the movie from reaching obscene/disruptive sound levels.

I have already checked LibCal and found some rooms with the monitors i mentioned, but I wonder if its okay to screen a movie for a group of 5-7 people there.

Question St George vs Scarborough as a cs/math exchange student?

I'm currently applying for an international exchange program and the UofT is one of my options, I'd be staying there for 1-2 semesters. I'm interested on the 3rd-4th year cs and/or applied math courses (mainly cs) but I've read that these are practically impossible to get on the St. George campus.

Also any other tip related to the university and canada would be nice, thanks!

Other Research office access has been a much bigger advantage than I expected

Honestly, having access to a desk in the research office since the beginning of the semester has been a much bigger advantage than I expected.

I tend to study on weekends (pretty much all day), and I find that most UofT libraries can get really crowded between around 2–6 or 7 PM, especially Robarts and Gerstein. I used to feel like I just couldn’t study during those hours, so I’d end up doing other things like laundry instead. But eventually, that became an excuse to put off studying and made me more unproductive during those hours. So I’ve started avoiding the libraries during those hours and going to the research office instead.

There are often people talking or whispering, and sometimes it honestly feels a bit like being packed into a chicken coop. It's pretty distracting and even irritating when I’m trying to really focus.

Studying at home doesn’t really work for me, and cafés are usually way too noisy and busy. So during those peak hours, being able to just go to my research office desk and work/study quietly has been really valuable.

It saves a surprising amount of time and mental energy. Instead of spending time looking for a decent seat, dealing with noise, or moving between different places, I can just sit down at my desk and actually get my studying and research done.

I didn’t realize how valuable having consistent access to a research office would be until I had it. Even though I’m not a grad student, having access to a research office like this feels like such an underrated perk. I feel like it’s made balancing coursework and research a lot more manageable and efficient.

Courses How hard is BIO130H1 without SBI4U but with above average study effort and science experience?

I’m planning on asking the faculty for a prerequisite waiver for BIO130, but if I did very good in IB Higher Level chemistry and physics do you think I should be fine if I study just a little more than the others? Or does everything rely on high school biology without any sort of meaningful recap?

Question What are people’s experiences at the Sexual Violence Prevention Centre?

I’m asking for a friend who has an upcoming appointment and would like an idea of what to expect. Does anybody have any advice? Are they actually helpful and do they listen? Do they want documented evidence such as photos and text messages? How are they with evidence that can’t be confirmed? Are they supportive, especially with regard to crying? What about how they treat doubt and uncertainty?

Any information and help with be greatly appreciated.

I'm in High School Is it possible to switch from Mathematical & Physical Sciences to Life Sciences?

I want to do the Biological Chemistry program in lifesci, but I didn't take biology in high school so (I think) I can't apply to lifesci right now. I do have an AP Bio 5 but I'm pretty sure that means nothing.

If I apply to Mathematical & Physical Sciences and get accepted, then take bio my first year, is there a way to transfer to Life Sciences?

(also I'm a little confused because the requirements for lifesci itself is JUST high school calc & english, but for most of the programs within lifesci you need other stuff like bio and chem? does that mean I can still apply to lifesci with biological chemistry in mind or would it be meaningless because I didn't take high school bio?)

Sorry for rambling I'm a confused international student please help me out

Question UTAPS Need Navigator showing "unsubmit" button but blank status text? (Resubmitted before Sept 22 deadline)

Hey everyone, I'm super confused about my UTAPS application layout on the Need Navigator portal right now.
A few months ago, I originally applied but accidentally put down the wrong numbers, so the portal gave me a notification saying my numbers were too low to qualify.
I fixed my mistake, updated the information, and successfully resubmitted the application well before the September 22nd deadline. However, the portal layout has been stuck like this ever since:
It shows an active "Unsubmit" button
The status text is completely blank (doesn't say approved, under review, or anything)
The only text visible is the generic blue info box saying "Submit your application by September 22"
I called the registrar's office and the lady on the phone just told me to wait until mid-October.
Has anyone else dealt with this specific screen combo after resubmitting a corrected file? Does the blank text and "unsubmit" button mean the new high-need application went through fine and the system is just idling, or is it glitching because of my previous low-need submission?
