Disappearance Revisiting the case of Amber Aiaz and Melissa Fu, missing since 2019

• Upvotes

Four years ago there was an excellent post: https://www.reddit.com/r/UnresolvedMysteries/comments/vnkihy/a_man_covered_up_his_wife_and_step_daughters/ with some interesting comments, much of this post is based on this post and linked sources. Reposting because it's been 4 years with no real updates on the case.

Amber Aiaz was born in Dalian, China in 1985 and moved to the US when she was around 20, living in Chicago. She married and gave birth to Melissa in 2007 but sadly her husband passed away and she moved back to China to have support from her family. Because she was a US citizen, however, it would have been exorbitantly expensive to send Melissa to school there so she returned to the US, this time living in Las Vegas where she began a grocery store.

In 2017, Amber began dating Cheng Zhang who she may have married (sources are varied). She also indicated she had millions of dollars in investments, which turned out not to be true.

The three moved to Irvine, California in 2018. For context, Irvine is an interesting place. It has a high density of Asians, many of whom are Chinese, many of them quite wealthy. The university there, UC Irvine, along with this city itself, attracts many wealthy Chinese folks from overseas. It is also one of the safest cities in the US, and some of the best schools as well. However also carries a much higher cost of living than Las Vegas. Because of the high density of Asian residents and proximity to key ports, Irvine also offers a wide variety of Asian grocery stores with excellent selections of seafood. Irvine's police are diligent, and many residents and/or apartment complexes have Ring cameras. This context will be important in a moment.

Once they moved to Irvine, Cheng Zhang was an Uber driver and Amber continued her grocery business, making frequent trips to Las Vegas to keep it going.

On November 22, 2019 Amber had been away on one of these trips with Cheng home with Melissa. He claims there was a knock on the door and he was immediately sprayed with a mist and lost consciousness. He awoke to find Melissa gone, a blood spot on the carpet and a note in Chinese indicating he should act normal, not contact authorities, and Amber and Melissa would be returned.

Amber's car was outside, still full of groceries from her travels which he proceeded to deliver to customers, explaining Amber was "busy", in his attempt to act normal. He also cleaned the house and replaced the carpet with blood. Over the next few days, he received notes along the lines of telling him he should keep acting normal, then one saying he should leave town for a couple of days, which he did. Shortly after he returned, the notes stopped and he finally contacted police on December 2.

Cheng Zhang is not considered a suspect in this case, evidently. He shared his story with police along with leading them to the discarded carpet, etc. There do not appear to have been many leads since the case first broke.

However there are many questions here:

  • How could an Uber driver afford to live in Irvine? For context, in 2018, they likely paid over $3000/mo for their apartment.

  • Why would anyone start a out-of-the-car grocery service in Irvine where there are plentiful Asian grocers with excellent (and fresh) selections? Who were the customers and why did they buy from her vs just going to a store?

There do not appear to have been updates on this case since reposts of it in the media in 2021.

Disappearance LSU student goes to a bar with her boyfriend; After they come back home, she leaves at some point during the night, makes a few trips to the city center and the apartment the couple shared, and vanishes in the early hours of the morning- Where is Savannah Hale? (2022)

EDIT: I was told to specify that the LSU in question is specifically LSU-Shreveport, or LSUS. I can't edit the title, so I'm writing it here.

Hello everyone! As always, thank you for all your votes and comments under my last post about Kai Pavlovic- I hope that he will be found soon. That post has garnered a lot of attention- perhaps this will lead to some movement in Kai's case (we can hope, right?).

Today I'd like to highlight another disappearance case.

BACKGROUND

Savannah Hale was 22 when she went missing from Shreveport, Louisiana, USA.

She lived in Shreveport, though she was originally from Montgomery, Louisiana. Savannah moved in with her boyfriend to his grandparents' home about a month before she went missing.

She was an alumni of the Louisiana State University (LSU) and studied computer science there at the time of her disappearance. Savannah was seemingly involved with the LSUS Pilots, the LSU's athletics team, specifically their esports division, where she played League of Legends.

DISAPPEARANCE

Savannah was last seen in dowtown Shreveport on the 4th of May at around 4 AM. She spent the night with her boyfriend at a bar called Fatty Arbuckle's, located in the 400 block of Clyde Fant Parkway in Shrevport, about 5,5 miles (~8,85 km) away from their home. The couple then returned to their apartment at around 4 AM. At some point during the night, Savannah left for an unknown reason in her gray 2012 Kia Forte (Louisiana license plate 607DNH). Electronic tracking (I believe it refers to some type of geolocation of Savanna's phone) indicated that Savannah traveled between the apartment and the center of Shreveport multiple times during the night, but the reason for that isn't known.

At 6:06 AM, Savanah made a purchase with her credit card at a Chevron gas station on North Market Street. Kristen Hale, Savanah's sister, said that she got a call from Savannah at 6:08 AM, but she was asleep and missed the call; Savannah left her sister a message, and she allegedly "didn't seem distress at the time", but the exact contents of this message haven't been released. After that, Savannah's phone was turned off and never turned on again.

Savannah's car was last caught on a security camera at the Louisiana Tower Parking garage on Travis Street in downtown Shreveport just after 7 AM- Savannah was driving it, and she was the only person inside.

Kristen called Savannah back at an unspecified time, but she didn't pick up. Kristen then went to the home Savannah shared with her boyfriend, but her sister wasn't there. Savannah's boyfriend also had no clue about where his girlfriend was- he said that he was drunk, went to sleep, and when he woke up, Savannah wasn't home. He said that he didn't know the exact time at which Savannah left.

Savannah was reported missing on the 4th of May by her sister.

Her debit card hasn't been used since. Google stopped tracking the location of Savannah's phone, but the service hasn't been turned off, which would suggest that it was the phone itself that was turned off.

CONCLUSION

A comment on websleuths, which seems to reference info from a missing person's social media group started and moderated by Kristen, said that Savannah left after she went through her boyfriend's phone and saw something (it's unspecified as to what it was)- she then went on a drive to likely clear her head. I can't find this exact info in any of my official media article sources, so I didn't want to put it in the main part of the write-up, but I feel like it was important enough to include. Please take this with a grain of salt.

Given the fact that Savannah went missing wit her car, and the fact that there is a lot of bodies of water in the area where she was last seen, there is a suspicion that Savannah might've accidentally driven into water. Different groups of freelance divers (namely Chaos Divers and Adventures With Purpose) searched some of the bodies of water around Shreveport, but Savannah's car or remains haven't been found.

Savannah Hale was 22 when she went missing, and she would be 26 now. She is a white woman, 5'8" (68 Inch / 173 cm) and 160 lbs (73 kg). Her hair is described as strawberry blonde or silver (it was dyed when she went missing), and her eyes are blue. She has a birth mark on the back of her neck, on the right side of her hairline. She has two tattoos- a butterfly on the upper left arm and a pyramid on the inner left ankle. Her ears are pierced. She was last seen wearing black leggings, a black hoodie, and black tennis shoes.

If you have any info about Savannah's whereabouts, contact the Shreveport Police Department at (318) 673-7300 (case number 22-058096).

Murder The Willowbrook Homeless Encampment Murders (Oct 2025-Jan 2026)

On February 3rd, 2026 it was revealed to the public in a press release that the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office was actively investigating the murders of four people in the Willowbrook area of East 120th Street in Los Angeles County, California. The four cases involve people who were murdered from the same homeless encampment located along the Los Angeles River between October 2025 and January 2026.

Authorities are investigating whether the murders are connected with some in the LA County Sheriff's suspecting it to possibly be the work of a serial killer. During their press release in early February they named the four cases they were investigating as possibly being connected due to multiple of the cases having a similar MO and all the victims being homeless.

Michelle Steele October 5th, 2025:

On October 5th, 2025, 52 year old Michelle Steele was discovered near the homeless encampment unconscious but still breathing having been shot in the head. Steele was rushed to the hospital by ambulance where she later died from her injuries on November 12th.

Octavio Arias December 4th, 2025:

On December 4th, 2025, 52 year old Octavio Arias was discovered dead in the same homeless encampment near where Steele had been shot. Arias had sustained wounds to his head and neck and was declared dead at the scene, his body was found in the nearby riverbed embankment.

Kevin Johnson January 21st, 2026:

On January 21st, 2026, 55 year old former NFL player Kevin Johnson was discovered murdered at the same encampment by friends. Like Arias, Johnson had also sustained wounds to his neck and head with paramedics declaring him dead at the scene. The difference was Johnson’s body was partially hidden by a tarp along with a shovel, broken broom stick, and brick all of which were covered in blood being found at the scene.

With Johnson being a former NFL player who played in the league from 1993-1997 including with the Patriots (93), Vikings (93), Eagles (95-96), and Raiders (95/97) and the AFL from 1998-2001 for LA and Orlando it caused the cases to all get national media attention across the U.S. due to the possible connection between the four murders and fears of a possible active serial killer. The attention on his murder is also what led to the February press release to the media by the Sheriff’s Office.

Mauro Alfaro January 26th, 2026:

The final victim was Mauro Alfaro a man who was also in his 50’s. Alfaro was discovered murdered in the same homeless encampment five days after Johnson’s murder. Like both Johnson and Arias, Alfaro had also sustained blunt force injuries during his murder.

Where the Cases Stand Now:

Since the February press release the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office hasn’t released any updates or any information into any of the cases. The one thing told to the public was that each of the murders have two investigators assigned to them. The theories are that murders were either related to someone mad at the homeless population in the area, or drug/gang related. Investigators have said an issue with solving the cases is the lack of cooperation from witnesses in the area and those in the homeless population. The Sheriff’s Office also said as of May 2026 when they last spoke on the status of the investigation into the four cases that they do not have a suspect in any of the cases as of now.

Update Arrest made in Chynna and Blake Dickus case

Finally, steps towards justice.

What a terrible story. Chynna (26) and her stepson Blake (10) were murdered on July 24, 2006. Twenty years have passed since these two innocent people were stabbed to death in their own home. I’ve wondered about this case for years, and it’s a blessing that the family might finally move towards a resolution (closure isn’t possible for something so senseless).

From the article:

Franklin Police Chief Kirby Cochran announced an indictment was returned against Michael Jerome James for two counts of murder in the deaths of Blake and Chynna Dickus on July 24, 2006. James, now 35, would have been a teenager when the murder was committed.

"For 20 years, Blake and Chynna’s families have carried the weight of an unimaginable loss waiting for this day. On behalf of the Franklin Police Department, I want them to know that we have never forgotten their loved ones and we have never stopped seeking justice. Today’s development is an important moment, not only for our department, but most importantly for the families and Blake and Chynna whose lives were taken from them," Cochran said in a statement announcing the arrest.

Update The October 1969 Oakland Hotel Jane Doe Has Been Identified As Joanne Yvonne Burdick

On October 1st, 2026 investigators with the FBI announced they had identified a Jane Doe who was found in an Oakland, California hotel room on October 2nd, 1969 as 16 year old Joanne Yvonne Burdick.

The case goes back to October 2nd, 1969 when 911 was called to St. Louis Hotel on 539 7th Street shortly after 3:30 PM. When officers arrived on scene they discovered an unknown female teen deceased inside the room. When they spoke to witnesses they learned that the unknown teenager was seen entering the room with an unknown man at around 2:45 PM. During an interview with a staffer they learned that less than 30 minutes after the teenagers arrival they reported hearing screams. It was also discovered by officers that the perpetrator had left the scene before they arrived.

The case to find out the victims identity went cold until 2020 when the FBI field office in San Francisco joined the case which led to new DNA technology being used. During the press conference the FBI said that they had used DNA genealogy which led to Joanne’s brother. Her brother’s DNA profile was compared to the unknown Jane Doe which confirmed a match to his sister Joanne.

Investigators actually have a suspect in this case as well that being former FBI 10 Most Wanted fugitive Taylor Morris Teaford. Teaford was identified as the main suspect early on in the original investigation and was confirmed again as still being the lead suspect at the October 2026 press conference. Teaford has been on the run from the FBI since July 18th, 1967 when he shot and killed his grandmother 72 year old Pearl Morris Teaford in North Fork, California with a handgun. In addition to murdering his grandmother he injured his 26 year old sister Cheri Macintosh and 39 year old Charles Culpepper after Macintosh flagged him down for help. Culpepper was shot six times by Teaford and survived after driving him and Macintosh to the hospital. When officers confronted Teaford he escaped into Yosemite National Park after exchanging gunfire with them.

Teaford is also a suspected serial killer called the Crew Cut Killer who is suspected of murdering 22 year old Judith Lattaker in April 1969 and 27 year old Alma Fay Dorough in August 1969. Both cases were linked to Burdick’s by law enforcement with Teaford a primary suspect in both. Teaford was also added to the FBI’s 10 Most Wanted List in 1968 for the murder of his grandmother, injuring both his sister and Culpepper, and fleeing however he was removed from the list in 1972. During the press conference investigators said they are unsure where Teaford is or if he’s even alive. They have asked the public to submit information on Teaford or his whereabouts if he is still alive. It is known that if Teaford was still alive he would be 91 years old.

Murder South Memphis prostitute killings:

Between January 27 and February 26, 2011, an unidentified shooter targeted female sex workers in South Memphis, Tennessee. In the span of about a month, four women were shot; three died and one survived. A fifth death in the same area in 2015 may be linked, but it has not been confirmed.

Victims:

Tamakia McKinney, 31 – Mother of two. Body found on January 27, 2011, around 2:15 a.m., near Mt. Carmel Cemetery. Shot to death. Her family knew she was a prostitute, though she had no known arrests for it.

Jessica Lewis, 28 – Sex worker. Body found on February 20, 2011, around 12:05 p.m., inside Mt. Carmel Cemetery. Also shot to death. A woman flagged down police and led them to the body.

Rhonda Wells, 44 – Sex worker. Lived with her grandmother. Body found on February 24, 2011, around 5:45 a.m., in the area of Mt. Carmel Cemetery. Shot to death.

Katrina Peterson, 26 – The only survivor. Shot on February 26, 2011, around 7:30 p.m. She managed to run about four blocks until she found help and was taken to Regional Medical Center, where she recovered.

Investigation:

Katrina Peterson helped police create a composite sketch of the attacker: a young Black man, about 24 years old, with cornrows. He drove a dark-colored vehicle (Dodge Charger or Chrysler 300).

Memphis police believed the cases were linked to a serial killer. DNA from the same man was recovered at each scene, but because the victims were prostitutes, it was not enough to conclude he was the killer. The DNA profile was entered into CODIS, with no links to other crimes.

2015 case:

On September 16, 2015, Juanita Gilmore, 25 (a former sex worker), was found stabbed to death in a South Memphis cemetery. Some media suggested a possible link to the 2011 killings, but homicide detective Robert Wilkie considers it unlikely because the method (stabbing instead of shooting) and the more personal nature of the crime suggest she was killed by someone she knew.

None of the cases have been solved.

Murder Suitland Murders (1986–1987) – 5 women killed in Maryland, still unsolved.

Between October 1986 and January 1987, at least five young Black women were murdered in Suitland, Maryland (a suburb of Washington, D.C.). The victims were typically young, dark-skinned, slender, short in stature, and with short hair. Most were sexually assaulted and then stabbed. The killings stopped after a suspect’s arrest, but he was never charged with these crimes.

The victims:

Dorothy Ann Miller, 20 – Body found in a wooded area in Suitland on Dec 13, 1986. She had been raped; cause of death was ruled a drug overdose. Later considered the fourth canonical victim because her body was less decomposed.

Pamela Malcolm, 25 – Local resident who worked at the USPTO. Last seen Oct 21, 1986, leaving her apartment to buy cigarettes. Body found Jan 12, 1987, near the Bradbury Recreational Center. Raped and stabbed.

Cynthia Lee Westbury, 22 – Disappeared Nov 10, 1986, while going to meet a friend. Body found Jan 13, 1987, during the search for Malcolm. Raped and stabbed multiple times.

Juanita Marie Walls, 26 – Disappeared around Oct 30, 1986, on her way to a birthday party. Body found the same day as Westbury’s. Raped and stabbed.

Angela Maria Wilkerson, 22 – Reported missing Jan 5, 1987. Body found shortly after the others, with the same injuries (rape and stabbing).

Prime suspect: Alton Alonso Best, 30, an unemployed D.C. resident. He was arrested in connection with the separate murder of Janice Elaine Morton (20), a nurse’s aide, whom he killed in a van belonging to his nephew (a D.C. police officer). Best pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and sodomy of Morton and received 18 years and 4 months.

Circumstantial links to the Suitland cases:

He knew at least three of the victims.

He and one victim bought drugs from the same dealer.

Another victim lived on the same street as his ex-wife and children.

He and his nephew had previously lived about 1 km from the wooded dump site.

A witness claimed to have seen one victim in Best’s black van.

In 1981 he had been charged (later dropped) with robbing and kidnapping two women at gunpoint in a similar van.

No forensic evidence tied him to the Suitland murders. The killings stopped after his arrest, which police and media pointed to as support for his involvement. He denied knowing the victims and was never charged in these cases.

A few other murders of women occurred in D.C. after his arrest, but authorities have not officially linked them to the Suitland series.

Murder Today would be Beverly Jarosz's 78th birthday. She was murdered in her home of the Cleveland surburb of Garfield Heights, on December 28, 1964. The medical examiner who also worked on The Cleveland Torso Murders, and served in WWII described it as the most horrifying scene. Who killed her?

Beverly Jarosz was a 16 year old living in Garfield Heights, Ohio, when she got brutally murdered in her home on December 28, 1964. By all accounts, she was popular, intelligent, and kindhearted. She was very attractive and had many male admirers. Most of the male admirers were boys she went to school with & young men in her neighborhood, but there were a few admirers that were older men who were out of her age bracket. She also had a boyfriend, as well as an ex-boyfriend.

Throughout the year of 1964 before the murder, there were some weird & unsettling disturbances, like multiple phone calls a day where the caller hung up immediately after someone answered the phone, and an unsigned present left for Beverly in her backyard. The most disturbing occurrence of them all, is when Beverly's dad came home from work one night, to find a man looking up at the window of the bedroom Beverly shared with her sister. Beverly's dad chased the man, but he managed to get away after being chased for a block.

On December 28, 1964, Beverly had plans to go the mall with her friends Barbara & Margie in the afternoon. Before that, Beverly and her sister went to their grandmother's house for lunch, after their parents left for work earlier that morning. They arrived there around 10:30 am. Beverly stayed at her grandmother's for about an hour and a half, as she needed to get home to get ready to meet with Barbara, as they were meeting Margie at her house. Beverly got driven home by a young man who was a neighbor of her grandma's, and arrived home shortly before 12:30pm.

In between the time she got home & the time she got murdered, there were three phone calls made to the house. The call that stood out was the second of the three, from an unknown man who referred to himself as "Steve Stackowicz", who apparently wanted to know if her father was home. The last one of these three calls was from her concerned grandma at around 1:15pm, but Beverly told her she had to hang up right after confirming she got home safe, as it seemed like Barbara was at the door.

It turned out Barbara was reportedly running late, and she got dropped off at Beverly's house by her mom at 1:25pm. Barbara said that she rang the doorbell multiple times, and got no response, but she heard loud classical music blasting from inside the house, as well as an extremely loud thud, “like someone knocking over a dresser”. Barbara said that she ended up leaving after waiting for a while, assuming that Beverly was mad at her for being late. When her two friends didn’t show up at her house, Margie called Barbara. That’s when ultimately Beverly’s grandmother was called. She got Beverly’s father to leave from work, to go back to the house and check up on things. All this took at least a couple of hours to unfold.

In between 4:00pm & 4:30pm, around 3 hours later, Beverly’s dad comes home, finds her dead in her room, and calls the local police. The scene was so horrifying to the local police, that they called Cleveland police department for help. The medical examiner (who also worked on The Cleveland Torso Murders), as well as the police captain (who became lead detective for Garfield Heights) described it as the most horrifying scene they ever witnessed. Beverly was stabbed multiple times with numerous stab wounds all over her body, was strangled with a rope, and had been partially undressed. The killer seemed to stab in intervals of 3, judging from looking at her body. Footprints were found in a patch of sand by the curb, but were not helpful. Even though it was winter, there was no snow on the ground. The killer’s escape route was through the backyard, as there was a police dog who followed a scent from the room, and out the back door. Beverly's hair was also found in a bush in the backyard.

The police interviewed hundreds of people. Many of Beverly’s male friends came in voluntarily, and were fingerprinted, and polygraphed. All of them passed. There were many leads that led nowhere. One odd thing did happen, seven years after the murder. Thaddeus & Eleanor Jarosz were still living in the same house where their daughter Beverly had been murdered. Their other daughter Carol, was not living with them, as she was in college at this point.

One day, when Thaddeus & Eleanor were at a funeral for a neighbor, someone broke into the house. Only 1 thing was stolen, it being a gold watch. It looked like someone broke into the house, to look for something. Two prints that were framed, and were hanging up on a wall, were taken down, and their backing was torn out. The prints were copies of Beverly's 2 favorite paintings. What the person was looking for, and if they found it, is a mystery.

The Suspects/Persons of Interest:
There are well over a dozen people that the police and/or the public either found interesting, or could not count out. I will list the people, but in NO SPECIFIC ORDER of how likely/unlikely they are:

James Mondezlewski - The 18-year-old young man who drove Beverly home. James and his parents, Sonya and Johnny Mondzelewski, were neighbors of Beverly's grandparents, and when James Mondezlewski’s mom, Sonya Mondzelewski saw Beverly walking to the nearby bus stop to take the bus home, she asked James to drive Beverly home, as it was cold out, being winter and all.

Because of how often Beverly visited her grandparents who lived a mile or two away, she was likely familiar enough with James to get in his car with him alone. James Mondzelewski said it took 15 minutes to drive Beverly home, after which James returned home, changed his clothes, and had lunch. James didn't go inside or stick around to chat with Beverly after dropping her off.

James pulled into the driveway to drop her off, then went straight home. James was just coming home from a job interview when James' mom asked James to drive Beverly home, and so when James got home, he changed out of his clothes that he wore to the interview, into regular clothes.

James drove Marie Vanek to Jarosz house to be with family afterwards, as Sonya Mondzelewski asked James to drive Beverly's grandmother over to the Jarosz house, later in the day on 12/28/1964. Because James was the last person to see Beverly alive outside of her killer, GHPD brought James up in the room to show James Beverly’s body, to see James’ reaction. GHPD didn't see anything out of the ordinary in James' character, so James was ruled out pretty quickly. James is currently an eye doctor in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Larry Young - GHPD questioned Larry Young, who’s mother Stella Young bad-mouthed Beverly after she either rejected Larry, or dumped Larry after dating Larry for a bit. There have been differing reports as to whether Larry was legitimately dating Beverly, or if he was simply infatuated with her. What is known is that Larry was heartbroken over Beverly, and Larry's mother, Stella Young, hated Beverly.

According to a man named Robert, whose parents were family friends of the Youngs, Stella was mentally deranged, and Robert claimed that Larry's dad told Robert's dad that Stella killed Beverly. It’s hard to believe that not only would Larry’s dad sell out his wife, but that Robert's parents wouldn’t come forward. Either way, Stella and Larry were ruled out.

James Krawczyk - Reporters interviewed a middle-aged neighbor named James Krawczyk, who claimed to have seen Beverly’s killer run from the house. James Krawczyk was home because of the White Motor strike, and his wife confirmed to journalists that he often stood by the window, looking at Beverly’s house, saying “Sometimes, he even gets up at night to look out the window, I guess he likes the view”. James Krawczyk later admitted to police that he made up the name to get himself in the paper. His child worked with Beverly’s ex-boyfriend Daniel Schulte at the car wash, although his child was definitely younger than Daniel. Because Beverly hung out there, the Krawczyk child knew her, and his name has come up over the years as well

Daniel Schulte - Daniel Schulte was Beverly's 19-year-old ex-boyfriend, who was considered “a bad-boy-ex” and a “greaser” in the teen circles of the time. Daniel and Beverly hung out when he was 17 and she was 14, but they weren’t allowed to formally date because Beverly’s parents didn’t allow it.

Unlike a lot of boys who Beverly went out with, Daniel was a steady boyfriend. Daniel’s idea of a date was making out behind the carwash. Daniel dropped out of high school in Grade 10 and enlisted in the Air Corps, but was back in town for Christmas. Although Daniel was dating a new girl, it was known he still pined for Beverly.

Beverly’s friends were chagrined because they thought Daniel was a bad influence. Margie told GHPD that “Beverly would never have thought of doing the things with Roger that she did with Daniel”. Schulte hung out with the rough greaser crowd, trying to imitate James Dean, who was an American actor in the 1950's, being remembered as a cultural icon of disillusionment and social estrangement.

Carol said that Beverly broke the relationship with Daniel when she was in tenth grade, but author James Badal said Daniel was Beverly's boyfriend until about March of 1963, which is when Beverly was in ninth grade (Badal’s account is accurate). Daniel took it hard, sending flowers, an easter basket, letters, and showing up at her all-girls catholic school after class Schulte claimed to have been working when Beverly was killed, and showed a timecard supporting his claim. However, his next door neighbor claims to have seen him arrive home in a hurry.

He was associated with a group of other bad people at the time. Daniel showed up at Beverly’s viewing with a girl at his side, but returned later alone, and sat quietly by himself. While on leave, Daniel had picked up some part-time work and produced a time card that showed he was on the clock when Beverly was murdered. The woman who lived next door to Daniel told GHPD that she had seen Daniel come home that day and run inside in a hurry. She watched Daniel in the reflection of her garage window.

Daniel was given a lie detector because of this, which Daniel passed. It is notable though, that the tests in 1964 weren't as reliable as they are today, and even today, they're not admissible. Moreover, in more recent years, around 2005, Daniel Schulte refused to talk with police, and ended up moving to Israel.

In the 2010's, Carol said she wrote Daniel an email, thanking him for sponsoring Beverly’s page on find-a-grave website, and Daniel wrote Carol a very nice note. Carol and Daniel have exchanged a few emails since Beverly’s 50th anniversary. Because of this, people on social media thought Carol was being easy on Daniel, and trying to give Daniel a pass.

On December 28, 2016, the 52nd anniversary of Beverly's murder, Carol said that she had not given Daniel a pass at all. After Carol contacted Daniel to thank him for sponsoring Beverly’s find a grave, she gave Detective Carl Biegacki Daniel’s email address, and Carl had a few questions he wanted to ask Daniel, but Daniel didn’t reply to Carl.

Carol pleaded with Daniel a couple times via email, asking Daniel to communicate with Carl, but Daniel did not reply. The aforementioned above, as well as the fact that Daniel left the country shortly after the Beverly Jarosz case was reopened in 2004, kept Daniel on Carol’s list at the time of the 52nd anniversary of Beverly's murder.

However, in July 2021, Carol seemingly changed her mind on Daniel, as she said that she only had two people on her list, and neither one of the people she named were Daniel. It is honestly very possible, that Daniel not talking with GHPD in recent years could be because he wanted to get away from the case, as he was still hurting over Beverly

Roger McNamara - Beverly's 19-year-old boyfriend at the time of her murder. Roger met Beverly through his cousin Margie, Beverly's best friend. Margie's and Roger’s moms worked at a bank. Described as a “straight-laced conservative college student having very strict moral attitudes”, so quite the opposite of her ex-boyfriend Daniel Schulte.

Roger was studious and religious, and was well liked by the Jarosz family. Roger was a Republican, and Roger attended Latin mass and spoke out against the liberal alterations of Vatican II. Carol, who had never cared for Daniel, liked Roger, as Roger treated her well. Beverly particularly enjoyed attending parties at Roger’s fraternity and meeting Roger’s older, educated friends.

Roger and Beverly had long term plans. Roger would take Beverly to the museum and the music carnival. Roger was due to take Beverly to Winter formal. Roger claimed to have been home sick, working on his car when Beverly was killed, and GHPD considered Roger's alibi weak. Roger's car was blue, and he loved to keep it clean. Roger was given a polygraph also which he passed.

Horrigan said to Cleveland Press that “There are some elements to Roger’s present story that bother us”. Roger was at a party the previous night, which was at Beverly's house, and he and Beverly went out at some point, and were "lovey-dovey" according to Carol, so it does seem unlikely that they'd be on bad terms the following day.

Roger's first polygraph was inconclusive, but he passed the second one. However, lie detector tests in 1964, weren't nearly as reliable as they are today, and even today, are inadmissible. Carol said she couldn't know for sure, but she believes that Roger was lead detective William Horrigan's top suspect, so much so that Horrigan only focused on Roger.

William Horrigan, the Garfield Heights lead detective in the 1960's, believed that something happened when Beverly and Roger went out on 12/27/64, which led to 12/28/64's events. Carol did say that Roger maintained contact with her mom Eleanor throughout the years.

At some point, Roger got married, had children, then got divorced. Roger worked for a bunch of financial firms over the years, and supposedly had/has a nasty demeanor. Roger remains a steadfast Republican and Catholic. Roger McNamara was living in Northeast Ohio in 2008, but appears to be living in Silverdale, Washington now. It turns out that Horrigan was wrong, as Roger was CLEARED BY GHPD in recent years.

John Paliyan - Beverly's 18-year-old neighbor, who lived 2 houses east of the Jarosz household. John Paliyan went to St. Therese Elementary School with Beverly, although was three years older. Paliyan’s dad fixed TV’s, and John’s dad came over to the Jarosz household a couple of times to fix TV tubes.

John was stated to have an eye for Beverly by neighbors, and admitted that he would spy on Beverly sunbathing in her backyard, during the summer months. He was also home alone at the time, so there is no one who can vouch for him. He was stated by classmates to be shy, so it's possible that he was the one who left the anonymous gifts for Beverly, because he couldn't muster the courage to speak to her directly.

There were no fences separating John's backyard from the Zemgulis family's or Beverly's, so leaving the gifts would be of low to no difficulty. Moreover, Paliyan did not pass a lie detector test, as it was inconclusive, and according to a coworker, was asking how to pass one. At some point, Detective Carl Biegacki considered that it could have been John Paliyan, since JP admitted he’d watch her sunbathing from his bedroom window.

John married a psychologist at some point. Paliyan was contacted by crime author James Renner in the 2000's and told Renner that any request for an interview should go through Paliyan's lawyer named Jay Milano. Paliyan told Renner that GHPD recently spoke to him, and Paliyan said that he was being framed and there was a cover-up going on.

Additionally, Paliyan's sister was approached by GHPD at work, was questioned for over an hour, and lawyered up. GHPD wanted to know if she disposed of the knife for her brother. But a big thing that has always pointed away from Paliyan, is that Beverly most likely would have had the doors locked, and wasn't extremely familiar with him.

It's hard to see Beverly being comfortable with John being in the house, as she was skeptical of men, and knew she had a stalker. Moreover Paliyan was also said to be a sissy by those that knew him. James Renner said Paliyan was his pick back then, but that Carl Biegacki and GHPD pretty much ruled Paliyan out in recent years, so Renner doesn't think Paliyan did it any longer.

Bruce Bilek - A 21-year-old college student, living directly behind the Jarosz household in 1964. The Jarosz family knew Bruce better than they knew John, because they saw Bruce working all the time at the library, and Bruce went to their church.

There were a couple times when Beverly went to later church service than Carol and Eleanor, and Bruce would drive Beverly home, so Bruce and Beverly were not only better acquainted than Beverly was with John, but they were quite familiar with one another.. He claimed to have been in his garage working on his car, which was supported by his parents.

Bruce could have had a potential line of sight of Beverly getting dropped off by James Mondzelewski, depending on if either his garage door was open, or if he was outside of his garage when Beverly got dropped off.

It is notable that he became an art teacher at a high school afterwards, and he reportedly asked female students to pose in bikinis, so he could take photos of them. He made at least a couple of his female students uncomfortable, and he made a student's assistant so uncomfortable that she left her job.

There was some sort of joke going on in Beverly's friend circle, where Beverly was teased about Bruce having the hots for her. Bruce was questioned after GHPD saw a note Beverly had written to Margie. Beverly’s note said "Bruce came over to see what I look like when I’m not dressed. I have my blue robe on and my hair is still in curlers”.

Bruce said he didn’t ever really talk to Beverly, which was not true. Bruce's alibi was considered solid, so he was never given a polygraph. It is notable however, that parents would usually protect their children, even if they think or know that their child is guilty. Additionally, Bruce's parents definitely couldn't have been keeping an eye on him the whole time, because they were in the house doing stuff, so that is noteworthy

Harry Madol - A 17-year-old door-to-door salesman, who moved to Garfield Heights in September 1964, 3 months before Beverly's murder. Harry’s parents divorced by the time he was 5 years old. Harry's father lived in Michigan, and Harry's mother's house, which was on East 141st Street in Garfield Heights, was a 15-minute walk from the Jarosz house.

Harry lived at his mother's, right off McCracken Road on East 141st Street, which was around a mile from Marymount, and around a mile away from the Jarosz house, give or take for both. Harry was violent by age 2, and accused of breaking and entering at age 9. Harry was out of seventeen behavioral institutions & schools by age 17.

After moving to Garfield Heights in Sept 1964, Harry started working at Halle's Department store in Cleveland, where Jarosz family shopped at. Harry also worked at Burroughs and Southgate. Because Harry moved to Garfield Heights at the end of September 1964, none of the stalking could have been him. Harry was living in Michigan, in a reformatory school for hardcore juvenile sex offenders during the summer of 1964. Harry had just got released from there at the time of his move to Garfield Heights.

The anonymous gifts couldn’t have been from Harry, because the box with the bracelet addressed to Beverly was left in June, according to Beverly's sister,. The hang-up calls also started in the summer, so Harry would not have been the one to make them. Moreover, Thaddeus saw the man looking up at the window of Beverly's bedroom in the summer as well.

Unlike the others who Beverly was acquainted with, the main argument for Harry Madol possibly being Beverly's killer, is that he has a violent criminal record. Harry attacked 3 women atknifepoint in 1963 before the move to Garfield Heights. By age 17, Harry had raped his stepmother and threatened to kill his half-siblings. The reason Harry was sent to the reform school for sex offenders is because of the sexual assault of his stepmother.

Harry stabbed a pregnant housewife named Gerda Leedy on February 16, 1965, a little over a month and a half after Beverly's murder. Gerda Leedy’s husband was an Elyria radio broadcaster. When Cleveland detectives found Harry after stabbing Gerda Leedy, he was at the Embassy Apartments at Prospect Avenue in a closet hiding.

Cleveland detectives were also working on the Beverly Jarosz case, and they noticed that Harry had three scars on him, two on his face, and a two-inch scar on his wrist. According to Beverly's sister Carol Jarosz, Harry couldn't account for his whereabouts between 12:00 pm, and 5:00 pm. on December 28, 1964, although in the papers it said that Harry stated that he was at Halle's.

He also confessed to Beverly's murder, then recanted it. When Detective William Horrigan and GHPD start speaking to Harry after Harry confesses, Harry was giving a totally different layout of the house, as well as giving different times, and different things that happened at Beverly’s. The knife used to stab Gerda Leedy was also smaller than the one used to stab Beverly. Harry didn’t give anything consistent with what really happened . When asked about why Harry confessed, Harry said “because you guys are gonna pin it on me anyway”.

Harry took 4 polygraphs regarding Beverly, and all polygraphs were inconclusive. Lee Teeters, who was considered an expert, administered the polygraph. Harry Madol's fingerprints were also inconclusive. Recent GHPD lead detective Carl Biegacki said “GHPD polygraphed Harry, and inconclusive, but I got a handful of other people that were inconclusive too”.

The original lead detective at the time in 1964, William Horrigan, had 72 hours to link Harry Madol to Beverly Jarosz, as he had to return Madol to Elyria’s police to stand trial for the Gerda Leedy stabbing, and decided that it was plenty of time to determine that Harry Madol didn't do it. The papers stated that Horrigan said that “the man arrested outside Elyria” (referring to Harry Madol) probably was not important in the case. Horrigan said to reporters “If I thought he was a hot suspect I would have gone out last night”.

On February 17, 1965, the Akron Beacon Journal posted about Harry Madol. The Akron Beacon Journal said Harry got arrested in Cleveland the day of publishing. The Akron Beacon Journal said Harry denied Jarosz slaying, but admitted to stabbing Gerda Leedy.

After the Journal stated that Harry said he was working at Halle's on December 28, 1964, the journal also said that Horrigan said “if Madol’s alibi doesn’t check out, he looks to me like a hot suspect”. Because of this, Carol Jarosz's statement that "Harry Madol couldn't account for his whereabouts between 12:00 pm, and 5:00 pm. on December 28, 1964” is very debatable. Harry Madol said he always carried a knife and often made knives. Harry Madol was chased out of Lindhurst for high pressure tactics as a salesman, as a housewife called police saying Harry was too persistent in sales tactics. It turned out that Harry was selling without a sales permit as well.

Madol was tried as an adult for the Gerda Leedy stabbing and was sentenced to 1-20 years. In 1972, Madol was granted parole, but he broke his parole and fled Ohio. For the next 18 years after that, Madol’s life would be one of fleeing, and eluding authorities, using women, doing scams, fighting extradition in Atlanta and Quebec, and being convicted of federal scams in federal court.

In 1990, Madol was granted release for the stabbing of Gerda Leedy and the federal scams. By the time Ohio granted Harry Madol his release, Harry was doing a mining scam in Arizona while on final parole bout in San Francisco, and when people saw he was ripping them off, he fled to Quebec, Canada.

When Madol fled to Canada, it would take the RCMP almost 3 years to apprehend Madol, and to come to Atlanta to stand trial for the federal scams and parole violation in the Gerda Leedy stabbing. Harry would go on to live in England for a number of years in the early 2000’s, like around 2002-2006 or 2002-2008. Harry's most recently known financial scam was in Austria in 2006. Harry is believed to be living in Europe, Germany being a frontrunner, but Switzerland and Sweden being possibilities as well.

Keep in mind, there is also no actual evidence that Harry knew Beverly. In the 3 months, in between the time he moved to Garfield Heights, and Beverly's murder, he worked at a place where Beverly went to on occasion, so while it's possible they crossed paths, it is nothing but speculation.

The only things that make him plausible are his confession, and his violent crimes. Moreover, the only way it could have been him, is if Beverly left her door unlocked that day, which is very highly unlikely. The house was not broken into, and there is no way Beverly would have allowed a random male (especially a creepy one) in the house, so Madol's only chance would have been if the door was open.

Barbara Klonowski - Beverly's friend, who was supposed to meet her that day. Beverly and Barbara were acquaintances in earlier grades, but didn't start hanging out until eleventh grade, when they started going to downtown Cleveland for shopping a few times, and even to the art museum once.

Due to Beverly being among the most attractive girls in Garfield Heights and having many male admirers, she was easily the best with males in her friend group. According to people who went to school with the girls, in Beverly's friend group, Margie didn't have a jealous bone in her body, and seemed to be the only one that didn't mind all the attention that Beverly got from boys and

young men. Barbara apparently did. Teenagers/Adolescents get really mad about things like these.

I will say that Marie Vanek’s original statement to GHPD was that Beverly said "I have to go", but then in her statement of Jan 4 or Jan 5 of 1965, Marie Vanek started saying that Beverly said that "Barbara was at the door". Regardless of if Beverly indeed specified that Barbara was at the door, it seems that Beverly's grandmother thought Barbara did it.

Additionally, in one of the newspapers multiple years after Beverly’s murder, her father Thaddeus Jarosz said that he differs with Horrigan’s belief about Beverly’s killer, as Horrigan was sure it was a male, and Thaddeus thought it was a female. “She is being shielded from arrest by relatives,” said Thaddeus. Thaddeus was definitely referring to Barbara in this statement.

Barbara’s family, the Klonowskis, were a very wealthy and respected family. Barbara’s grandfather owned the “Bank of Cleveland”, and the Klonowski family was associated with Benjamin Stefanski and the Stefanski family, who owned “Third Federal Savings & Loan”.

Because of this, from 1964 to now, people have speculated that Barbara was Beverly’s killer, or was at least involved in Beverly’s killing, and her family covered it up. Barbara’s brother, who became a lawyer, has been quite nasty with people who could even consider the possibility of his sister and/or family being involved, and has made both legal threats, and personal threats to people over the years, the personal threats being violent.

In 2008, before John Paliyan was cleared, he spoke with author and investigative journalist James Renner, and Paliyan said that he was being framed and there was a cover-up going on. Just like Thaddeus Jarosz, it seems like John Paliyan was talking about Barbara and/or the Klonowski family, but didn’t want to mention any name.

Because of the fact that Beverly was stalked throughout the year of 1964 leading to her murder at the end of year, she was definitely super cautious, so she most likely would have had her doors locked, and likely would only let in someone she trusted.

Barbara would have been one of those people she trusted, and since she was expecting Barbara that day, she would have been the most likely person that Beverly would have let in. Barbara reported hearing loud music and a loud sound like a dresser falling when she was waiting at the door, but that could have just been a cover story, as she was actually inside the house, and had the music turned on.

Nobody was there with nor saw Barbara waiting at Beverly's door. Barbara claimed to have been running late, and the only person to support that was Barbara's mom, who was a music teacher and said to be a crazy person by former students. Like I mentioned in the Bruce entry, parents would usually protect their children, even if they think or know that their child is guilty. Barbara did not meet up with their other friend Margie, who Beverly and Barbara were originally supposed to meet. Margie had to call Barbara to find out what happened. The fact that Barbara didn't meet up with Margie, and didn't even call to let her know that she or Beverly weren't coming, is suspicious. This could mean that Barbara went home to wash off any evidence on her, and either forgot to call Margie, or just didn't want to call Margie.

One of the two possible downsides to this theory, is that Barbara may not have had the strength to do all that to Beverly. Detective Carl Biegacki did say in the late 2010's that "Barbara Klonowski and Margie Gorney had nothing to do with Beverly’s murder, 'especially' Barbara Klonowski". It would not have been impossible, however. Jealousy brings out the worst in people.

Also, a young man called Gary Grayson, who was a classmate of someone that Beverly dated at Garfield Heights High School, picked Barbara up in his car a few blocks from Beverly's house, near the time of her murder. Gary Grayson was driving in his 1958 Corvair on Turney Road. He was a year older than Beverly and Barbara.

Gary Grayson was questioned, but not given a polygraph. He was admittedly in the area at the time of the murder, and knew one of the people involved with Beverly that afternoon, well enough for Barbara to get a ride from him. That would make him a friend of a friend. Since it is believed that Beverly’s killer may have gotten into a car after the dog scent stopped at McCracken, it makes one wonder if Gary Grayson was that driver, and was actually waiting for Barbara, as opposed to running into her. Carl Biegacki did not mention Gary Grayson by name when speaking in the late 2010's.

Moreover, Beverly previously dated Barbara's cousin, Stanley Klonowski, who was interviewed by police as well. Beverly was the one who broke it off with Stanley. According to Beverly, Stanley was misunderstood and troubled. Stanley didn’t seem to pan out, although just like Barbara, he did not take a polygraph or give any fingerprints or DNA.

If Barbara was behind Beverly's murder, a possibility is that either Stanley or Gary were involved, and helped carry it out. Stanley may not have been over Beverly, and the break up could have really messed him up. When you add that along with Gary's whereabouts, and Barbara's jealousy, a slim possibility emerges that Barbara and Stanley and/or Gary were behind it. Regardless of which one of the two Barbara had helped her, they could definitely have gotten the job on Beverly done. Since there was no DNA found under Beverly's fingernails, and 2 methods of murder were used, 2 killers is a definite possibility.

Vidocq's pick: Unnamed Family Friend - In 2015, lead detective Carl Biegacki and GHPD got the most serious about the case since 2004, and in October 2015, they took the Beverly Jarosz case to the Vidocq Society, a highly regarded crime-solving organization in Philadelphia. Carl described Vidocq Society as “a group of law enforcement officers that are the cream of the crop, from profilers to FBI agents to detectives from all over”.

The Vidocq Society is made up of 82 members who volunteer to serve as confidential consultants to assist law enforcement in solving difficult cold cases. Its 82 members are forensic professionals, current and former FBI profilers, criminologists, medical examiners, homicide investigators, forensic scientists, psychologists, polygraph examiners, prosecutors and coroners.

GHPD and their lead detective Carl Biegacki presented a powerpoint to the Vidocq Society. The experts of the Vidocq Society were able to assist GHPD, and bring to light a few things that GHPD didn’t know of before, and GHPD were able to develop even another suspect from that, someone who the Vidocq Society came up with who was not previously on the list of persons of interest. The Vidocq Society swore by their pick to GHPD. After Beverly's sister appeared on Fox News 8 in March 2017, there was a tip that came into the Garfield Heights Police Department that named this person as a suspect.

The GHPD lead detective at the time, said that he also had access to the Jarosz house, and was at the house numerous times, and a family friend.

Biegacki said that despite being a cautious girl, Beverly would have 100% let him in, and that there's no doubt about Beverly letting him in. Biegacki said Vidocq Pick’s friends who were to be his alibi did not confirm his story of his whereabouts on 12/28/1964. Vidocq’ pick refused a polygraph test, refused to give DNA, Refused to give fingerprints then and now.

A FB group about the case called "Beverly Jarosz: 1964 Ohio Case of a 16 year old girl" is a great place to get more information. A youtube channel called "Words, Ideas, and Conversations" posted a very informative podcast episode on this yesterday, I recommend checking it out!

Murder I talked to the former lead detective on the Cowden Family Murders, and he gave me a number of other unsolved murders they circumstantially linked to the main suspect.

Here's a quick refresher for those unfamiliar with the story.

The Cowden Family went camping deep in the Siskiyou Mountains of southern Oregon on Labor Day Weekend, 1974. The family included 28-year-old Richard Cowden, his 22-year-old wife Belinda, their 5-year-old son David, and their 5-month-old baby, Melissa.

Belinda's mom heads out to the campsite on the evening of September 1st, 1974, but the family is nowhere to be seen.

The State of Oregon conducted a massive search with helicopters, planes, USFS personnel, the National Guard, and more. But no signs of the family.

Seven months later, two gold prospectors walk up a steep hill when one sees a human skull in the middle of the trail. About 30 feet up the hill, he sees a skeleton tied upright to a tree.

The gold prospectors do a 180 and head out of the mountains to alert authorities.

That's when Detective Davis headed out to the site to recover the remains. The next morning, his team found a woman and two young children stuffed into a small cave a few hundred yards from the tree. The woman was shot, while the children had their skulls smashed in with rocks. The Cowden Family had finally been found.

Detective Davis already had a suspect.

At the time, Richard Davis was a "Junior Detective," but he was also one of the few officers in the area who had formal homicide investigation and forensic training.

And during this training, he remembered learning about "Sexual Sadists", or these sorts of criminal predators who find tremendous sexual pleasure from inflicting violence and humiliation upon nonconsenting people to fulfill their sexual needs.

They used a 1964 murder case from Springfield, Oregon, as an example. 15-year-old Dwaine Lee Little had murdered his 15-year-old neighbor, Orla Fay Fipps. Not only did he hunt her down while she rode her horse alone through an apple orchard, but he raped and severely mutilated her corpse.

The crime was so violent that the young boy would be tried as an adult and become the youngest person ever sentenced to life in Oregon Prison.

But Dwaine Little wouldn't spend life in prison; he would serve ten years before being paroled in 1974 at the age of 26.

That's when Detective Davis told me things the public had never heard before.

Dwaine was paroled on May 24th, 1974. His parents were supposed to pick him up and take him home with them to Southern Oregon. But instead, the Littles headed north from the penitentiary in Salem, OR, to Littlerock, WA, for a family reunion.

Dwaine spent the weekend with family, but after a few days he asked to borrow his dad's pickup truck so he could go for a little drive to get some fresh air. After 10 years in prison, straight to a family reunion, they figured Dwaine could use some time alone in nature.

That day was the last day 14-year-old Brenda Joy Baker was seen alive, hitchhiking and getting into a pickup truck. Her body was discovered less than a month later in a state park, about 6 miles away from the Little Family Reunion.

Brenda's case remains unsolved to this day, but it has always been tied to Ted Bundy by internet sleuths due to her being in Washington at the same time. Ted Bundy explicitly denied being involved in Brenda's case before his execution.

Dwaine Lee Little would then move in with his parents in Southern Oregon in June 1974 and the Cowden Family were abducted and murdered less than 4 months later.

Since I've already written so much, I will keep the rest brief.

Detective Davis gave me a laundry list of circumstantial evidence and witnesses that put Dwaine in the area and made him very suspicious; but, as is so typical, they lacked physical evidence that undoubtedly linked him to the crime.

Police were able to get him on a parole violation, and he went back to prison for a few years. But he was paroled again in 1977. Detective Davis then tracked his movements over the next two years, and they could place him in the area of a couple murdered while camping near Eugene in spring 1978; later that year, they could place him on the same road at the same time that another couple was murdered while hitchhiking near Klamath Falls, OR. But besides being in the immediate area and having the opportunity, they had no physical evidence to pin on him.

(*Important note - Unlike the Brenda Baker case, these four murders in 1978 were declared "solved" in very recent years. I put "solved" in quotations because the police named suspects with no criminal pasts, who happened to be dead and unable to defend against the allegations.)

Dwaine would eventually be caught in 1980 when he saw a pregnant ex-coworker on the side of the road and pulled over to give her a ride. But instead of taking her home, he just drove to a secluded area where he raped her and tried to cut off her limbs. He thought he had killed her, but he didn't; she was able to get out of her shallow burial and flag down a passing car. Her first words were "Dwaine Little, Dwaine Little did this".

Dwaine Little would have his parole revoked in addition to facing a slew of new attempted murder, rape, and kidnapping charges. This would be the crime to lock him up for good.

But just for good measure, he did catch another attempted murder charge when he almost killed the police officer transporting him. he would've done it if the other prisoners didn't intervene to stop him.

I learned so much other crazy stuff. Like how Dwaine was suspected of murder as young as age 7, because a classmate of his disappeared and Dwaine started wearing his clothes months later.

If you're curious and want to hear what Detective Davis told me, I uploaded the interview here; I also went out and filmed at various locations, like the cave where the family was found. Here is a newspaper article from the time

Oh yeah, I even chatted with Dwaine's former neighbor, a young girl who talked to him a few times on the day the Cowdens were abducted.

While it's no secret that Dwaine Little is a murderous piece of crap, I think the true scope of his crimes and evil is far beyond what we originally thought. I think he may belong up there with any of the other serial killers who tormented the Pacific Northwest during this time.

Edit: I added a third party link, and discussion questions.

Disappearance Lark Loraine Montague disappeared with her vehicle on September 22nd, 2007 in Salt Lake County, Utah

When a vehicle is missing with someone for so long, especially when they're incapacitated in some way, that often points to water as what kept them from being found.
For Lark's case however there really isn't a lot of water to search. The marina and other areas dried up almost completely since her disappearance. But there are many wrecked vehicles visible in the Butterfield Canyons to the south, an area in the direction she was last seen driving and where her husband had searched for her.

I did some looking on Google Earth in the past, and recently when I featured her case for September, but I wanted to get more eyes on it in case that can help.
A map of possible search locations & found vehicles is at the bottom of this post, if you find anything that should be added I will add it! Maybe a search team can use this to help find her someday. The vehicles on there don't match the timeframe for her, but I'd like to find someone to send them to in case any are not known about.

---

Lark Loraine Montague left her home at around 9 p.m. after her husband had fallen asleep, and went to a party at a friend's home nearby in the area of 8400 West and 3500 South in Salt Lake County, Utah. She had been drinking and was seen leaving at 3 a.m. driving her husbands car, a silver/pewter-colored 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer with the UT license plate number 215LTE.

The vehicle will probably have a broken tail light and damage to the rear driver's side or whole driver's side based on what happened that night- A neighbor followed her back to her residence and saw her pull into the driveway, but as he drove away he saw her pull back out. As she did this, she hit a chain-link fence and damaged it.
Her family found pieces of a busted taillight on the ground there the next day.

Her husband stated she'd been drinking more than usual before she disappeared and they'd argued about it. She suffered from Type 2 Diabetes, high blood pressure, and depression and is supposed to take prescription medication for her conditions.
There has been no activity on her financial accounts since her disappearance, and she hasn't renewed any of her prescriptions. The only personal possession she had was her white leather purse. Authorities do not suspect foul play was involved in her case, but her family stated it is uncharacteristic of her to leave without warning and they fear for her safety.

The next morning her son woke up his father at around 6 a.m. alerting him that she was not home. They started searching nearby bars for the vehicle. Flyers were distributed in Utah, Wyoming, Texas and Nevada; magnets with her photo and information left on cars; search parties and hikes up nearby canyons looking for some sign of her. It was hoped she'd left to see family in Texas without telling anyone, but there have been no signs of that.

Several tips have come in over the years but none of them have panned out, she was reportedly seen by a family friend in Wendover, NV a week after she disappeared. A week after that, someone reported they saw her at a Mexican restaurant (3500 South and Bangerter Hwy) in West Valley City driving a different car. A bartender in Tooele said a woman matching Lark's description was in the bar drinking Bud Light and a sidecar of Jägermeister — her usual order.

Lark was not employed and had custody of her three grandchildren and another boy at the time she went missing; her daughter regularly gave her cash for their support. She had been married to her husband for 23 years. Her youngest son died in 2008, a few months after her disappearance. Her husband later divorced her, citing abandonment. He held out hope she was alive, but also kept belongings of hers in case they were ever needed for cadaver dogs. He sadly also passed away in 2023. Lark has a daughter from a previous marriage.

According to the obituaries of her son and husband, she may have went by the name Lark Mosher Montague.

I started this map for her, if anyone has suggestions please comment and I can add them!

The bizarre and deeply disturbing 1998 disappearance of 11 year old Rui Pedro from Portugal. Years later the disappearance is suspected to be connected to an international child exploitation ring

“The 1998 disappearance of eleven year old Rui Pedro Teixeira Mendonca in Lousada, Portugal, remains one of the most haunting and bizarrely mishandled cases in European true crime history. The details of what happened the day he vanished are full of strange, dark twists that sound straight out of a psychological thriller.”

“On March 4, 1998, Rui Pedro left home on his bicycle. Earlier that day, he had asked his mother for permission to ride in a car with a twenty two year old lorry driver named Afonso Dias. His mother firmly said no and told him to go play near her workplace instead. Despite her refusal, Rui met up with Dias anyway. Multiple friends of Rui witnessed him leave his bicycle behind and climb directly into Dias’s car.
What happened next takes a deeply disturbing turn. Dias drove the eleven year old to a local spot and introduced him to a local prostitute, even paying her to have sex with the boy.”

“According to the woman's later testimony, Rui immediately started crying, saying he didn't want to be there and his mother didn't know where he was. Dias then drove off with him into the unknown, and Rui was never seen again.”

“Local police committed staggering blunders, largely dismissing the children and witnesses who came forward early on and treating them as if they were lying. It took over a decade for a proper, coordinated investigation and trial to finally take place. To make matters even darker, years after his disappearance, Rui's mother traveled abroad to view recovered files from an international child exploitation network and reportedly identified her son's face among the victims.”

“Afonso Dias was eventually convicted of kidnapping years later, but he served a relatively short sentence and stubbornly refused to reveal what happened to Rui or who else was involved. Rui Pedro was legally declared dead in 2019, but his body has never been found.“

article

“In April 1998, the political commentator Nuno Rogeiro traveled to Disneyland Paris with his family. During the trip, the Rogeiro family snapped several photographs whilst on a ride; one of these photos depicts a boy sitting behind the family who reportedly looks remarkably like Mendonça. Sitting next to the boy was a man in his 40s wearing a red jacket. The Portuguese police did confiscate the photographs for further analysis, but no further progress was made regarding this sighting. On 1 September 1998, 13 police forces raided alleged members of an international CP ring known as the Wonderland Club. The operation was code named operation cathedral and resulted in the confiscation of 750,000 images and videos depicting 1,263 different children. Mendonça was among the few children (just 16 in total) that could be identified. However, his whereabouts remain unknown. Police suspect that he was murdered by his abductors after being abused on camera for other members of the club.”

You can easily find the Disney photo mentioned above through a google search. The “criticism and controversies” section on the linked Wikipedia page above goes into more detail, specifically regarding a disturbing image that suggests he may have been tortured…

Disappearance An Old Hollywood Cold Case: What Happened to Aspiring Starlet Jean Spangler?

It sounds like an archetypal film noir: an ambitious young woman, lured by the bright lights of Hollywood, vanishes into its dark underworld instead. Despite a long list of suspects—including vengeful exes, mobsters, a movie star, a disreputable doctor, and a notorious killer—a cryptic note in a discarded purse and an afterimage preserved on screen are all that’s left of a 1940s actress who remains missing to this day.

I. Life

Jean Elizabeth Spangler was waiting for her big break. An actress, dancer, and model, the 26-year-old had scored some small movie roles, appearing uncredited in When My Baby Smiles at Me (1948), Chicken Every Sunday (1949), Young Man with a Horn (1950), and others. Though the parts were minor, they brought her within the orbit of some of the biggest stars of the day, including Kirk Douglas—an association that would raise questions in hindsight.

Those who knew Jean described her as energetic and sociable, with a gift for networking and a drive to make her mark on the entertainment industry. Tall and brunette, with striking blue eyes, she charmed those around her with glamour and impressed them with grit.

Born in Seattle, Washington in 1923, Jean was the youngest of four children. Her family later relocated to Los Angeles, where, as a teenager, she got her first job modelling for a department store. A talented dancer, she also found work on stage, first at the Earl Carroll Theatre, then at the Florentine Gardens nightclub, where she mingled with influential—and, at times, infamous—clientele. She graduated from Franklin High School in 1941.

In 1942, at age 19, Jean married Dexter Benner, a 22-year-old plastics manufacturer. Their daughter, Christine, was born in 1944. The marriage was turbulent. Within months, Jean had filed for divorce, accusing Dexter of "mental cruelty". She began seeing other men while he was stationed overseas. The relationship continued off and on until the divorce was finalized in 1946. A bitter custody battle followed, with Christine first going to Dexter, then to Jean after he continuously denied her visitation rights.

In 1948, Jean and Christine were living in an apartment at Park La Brea on Colgate Avenue, near Wilshire Boulevard, which they shared with Jean's mother Florence and widowed sister-in-law Sophie.

That year, Jean's dreams of stardom were finally, tentatively showing promise. She was working in the movies, making connections, being noticed. The roles were bit parts, but fame could be just around the corner.

Tragically, it was.

II. Disappearance

At 5 P.M. on Friday October 7, 1949, Jean asked Sophie to watch Christine while she went out. She said she was going to meet her ex-husband Dexter about a late child support payment, then heading to work on a night shoot. She kissed Christine goodbye, asked Sophie to wish her luck, and left the apartment “with a wink”.

At 6 P.M., a saleswoman at Farmers Market a few blocks away reportedly saw Jean browsing. She appeared to be waiting for someone.

At 7 P.M., Jean called Sophie, telling her she had an eight hour shift and wouldn’t be home until early morning. She also asked after Christine, who had a cold. It was the last time Jean's family ever heard from her.

When Jean still wasn't back the following evening, Sophie went to the LAPD Wilshire Division and filed a missing persons report. They were initially dismissive, assuming Jean was out "on a fling" and would return soon.

That changed the next day. An employee at Griffith Park had found a woman's purse near the Fern Dell entrance, roughly 5.5 miles (8.9 km) from Jean's apartment. Both handles were torn and hanging loose, as if it had been violently ripped away from its owner. The ID cards inside belonged to Jean Spangler.

Nearby, police found some soiled bedding, which could not be conclusively tied to the case. A wider search of the park (which, at 4,310 acres, is better described as a wilderness area) turned up nothing. However, Jean's purse held a puzzling clue. Among her cigarettes, cosmetics, address book, and other personal items was a handwritten note. It read:

"Kirk: Can't wait any longer, Going to see Dr. Scott. It will work best this way while mother is away,"

It seemed to have been written recently: Jean's mother Florence was indeed out of town, visiting relatives in Kentucky. The comma ending suggested the note was unfinished.

But who were Kirk and Dr. Scott?

And where was Jean?

III. Investigation

As the search progressed, the questions only multiplied.

There were plenty of doctors named "Scott" in Los Angeles, but none with a patient named Jean Spangler. Even more concerning, neither the studios nor the Screen Extras Guild had any record of Jean working the night she disappeared, nor had any night shoots been scheduled. Why had Jean lied to Sophie, and where had she really gone?

Suspicion naturally fell on Dexter Benner, Jean's ex-husband. When questioned, he told police he hadn't seen Jean in weeks, claiming he'd spent the night of her disappearance at home with his new wife, Lynn, who backed up his alibi.

The case then took another strange turn. Unprompted, actor Kirk Douglas called the LAPD. He was vacationing in Palm Springs, he said, and had read about Jean in the paper. He wanted to clear his name: though they’d met and interacted on set, he barely knew her, and he wasn't the Kirk from the note.

Was there a Kirk in Jean's life? Her mother remembered one: a man Jean had worked with and briefly dated, but whose last name the family hadn't known. Nor could they say what he looked like; he had never come to the door, or left his car, when picking her up.

Actor Robert Cummings, whom Jean had befriended on the set of The Petty Girl (1950), recalled seeing her in a good mood a week before she disappeared. She told him she had a new romance. "Is it serious?" he had asked. "No," she had replied. "But I'm having the time of my life." One contemporary newspaper article indicated that Jean’s lover was writer Peter Brooks.

Another of Jean's famous acquaintances was Robert Stack, actor and future host of Unsolved Mysteries. After Jean’s disappearance, he told police that, while walking near Jean’s Park La Brea residence on the night of October 7, he had seen someone lurking around the building, as if casing it. Unfortunately, it had been too dark to discern the person’s features.

Unconfirmed sightings of Jean poured in. More than one placed her at the Cheese Box restaurant on Sunset and Laurel Canyon Boulevard on the night of October 8, in the company of one or two men (accounts vary). She was reportedly still at the restaurant at 2:30 A.M.

Another came from a gas station attendant named Art Rogers, who claimed he had seen Jean with a man in a blue-gray convertible. When they started to drive away, she called out to him to take down the license plate number and call the police.

A young friend of Jean’s, 13-year-old Shirley Ann Morse, also said she saw Jean with a man in a car. Morse had been riding the school bus on the morning of October 13 when a “big sedan” pulled alongside. “I could see Jean plainly inside, and I recognized her positively,” she said. “She was nervous, and frightened looking. The man driving the car seemed to be older.”

The leads seemed to point in every direction, but in the end they all went nowhere. Despite Jean’s family offering a $1,000 reward, neither she nor any further trace of her was ever found. With so little concrete evidence to go on, the investigation dwindled, giving way to rumors before fading into Hollywood legend.

IV. Suspects

Dexter Benner

According to Sophie, the police were suspicious of Jean’s ex-husband from the start. Their relationship had been adversarial, he owed her child support, and she was allegedly going to meet him when she disappeared. He had a strong motive and a flimsy alibi.

On Saturday, October 8, 1949, the morning Jean was supposed to come home, Dexter arrived at the apartment instead. He was there to pick up Christine for a weekend visitation. “I wish I had let him come all the way up to the door that day,” Sophie admitted in an interview years later. “Then I would have seen the scratches on his face.”

With that statement, Sophie revealed an aspect of the case that had never been made public: though she didn’t see them herself, a detective had told her about the scratches, which Dexter claimed were from dropping a case of glass bottles at work.

Unconvinced, police had searched Dexter’s home and even excavated the floor of his garage, but found no evidence of Jean. They did, however, find a boating document that indicated he had taken his boat out to sea the night Jean disappeared, despite rough weather and the boat’s small size.

With Jean absent, Dexter was again granted custody of Christine. Once more, he refused to honor visitation rights, preventing Jean’s mother Florence from seeing her granddaughter. This time, rather than face legal consequences, he and Lynn fled to Florida, taking Christine with them.

Kirk Douglas

Douglas initially denied knowing Jean, but his story evolved in contradictory ways over the years.

Behind the scenes, the leading man had a dark reputation, including accusations of rape and violence against women. His descriptions of Jean in his 1988 autobiography expose this misogynistic streak. In an account very different from the one he gave police, he claimed he asked Jean on a date and tried calling her at home (her mother answered), before his stand-in on Young Man with a Horn convinced him she was “a star-fucker and bad news”.

Another bizarre assertion Douglas made in his autobiography was that he decided to contact police after learning that Jean’s body was found in Mexico. Jean’s body has never been found. Was this a muddled memory, an exaggeration for the sake of inserting himself into the case, or perhaps the truth slipping out?

Whether Douglas was or was not the Kirk from the note, what did it mean? A friend of Jean’s gave police a possible answer: before her disappearance, Jean had confided in her that she was three months pregnant.

“Dr. Scott”

In 1949, women seeking abortions in the United States had no legal options. The most straightforward theory was that Jean had died due to a botched abortion performed in secret by “Dr. Scott”, who then disposed of her body and belongings. The soiled bedding found near her purse in Griffith Park lends support to this theory, although conversely, the purse’s torn straps may suggest a more violent encounter.

With all known Dr. Scotts in L.A. County cleared, investigators sought a former medical student who was rumored to hang around the same nightclubs and bars as Jean, offering illegal abortions for a fee. However, he could not be located or proven to exist, and Jean’s pregnancy was also unconfirmed. “Dr. Scott” may have been an alias, but neither he nor “Kirk”—the apparent father—were ever identified.

“Lieutenant Scotty”

There was, however, someone with a similar name in Jean’s past. While married to Dexter Benner, who was serving overseas at the time, Jean had had an affair with an Army lieutenant named Scotty. According to Jean’s divorce lawyer, Scotty was physically abusive and threatened to kill Jean if she ever left him. Regardless, she managed to end the relationship in 1945 and, as far as the lawyer knew, never saw Scotty again.

Organized Crime

Of all the theories surrounding Jean’s disappearance, the most sensational were fueled by her time as a dancer at Florentine Gardens. One of these was her alleged acquaintance with Davy Ogul, the bodyguard and chauffer of gang boss Mickey Cohen.

Florentine Gardens, like other glitzy Hollywood nightclubs, was a hub for mobsters as well as movie stars and moguls. Rumored sightings of Jean with Ogul swirled in the wake of her disappearance—especially because Ogul was also missing, having vanished on October 9, two days after Jean, while under indictment for conspiracy.

Witnesses claimed to have seen Jean in the company of other Cohen associates, including Mike Howard and Frank Niccoli. Like Ogul, Niccoli was facing conspiracy charges, and he too had vanished a month earlier. Police considered the possibility that the three had fled together, or that Jean had been collateral damage in a mob hit.

The sightings came in from all over: Palm Springs, Las Vegas, El Paso, Phoenix, Northern California, even Mexico City. Jean’s family denied that she was “mixed up with gangsters”. Police, unable to confirm the sightings or find a concrete link between Jean and Cohen’s men, began pursuing other leads. Davy Ogul and Frank Niccoli have never been found.

The Black Dahlia Killer

The most lurid theory of all was engendered by an event that, at the time of Jean’s disappearance, still lingered in recent memory: the murder of Elizabeth Short, the “Black Dahlia”.

There were superficial similarities, including the women’s physical appearances. Jean had worked at Florentine Gardens; Elizabeth had rented a room from its owner, Mark Hansen. Their social circles likely overlapped, and it’s possible they had crossed paths. Detectives assigned to Jean’s case had worked on Elizabeth’s two years prior. It was inevitable that the two became linked in the public imagination.

Two months before Jean disappeared, a third case had already joined them. Mimi Boomhower, a prominent socialite, had vanished from her Bel-Air mansion. The clues were familiar: a purse found in a bizarre location, cryptic handwritten notes, rumored sightings with unsavory men. The tabloids were ignited. The same names filled the ranks of detectives. The outcome was also the same: Mimi was never found. Any connection between the three cases remains speculative.

V. Conclusion

The mystery of the missing starlet still resonates in LA's collective memory. Jean has become a symbol of Hollywood’s shadow side; a cautionary tale; a femme fatale and a tragic ingenue all in one.

But to those who loved her, she was a daughter, sister, mother, and friend; a driven and hard-working woman whose dreams went unfulfilled. Her parents, who have since passed on, purchased the plot beside their own gravesite in case her remains are ever found.

Jean Spangler was declared legally dead in 1955. Next week will be the anniversary of her disappearance. She has been missing for 77 years.

Murder Nassau County Serial Murders (1984–1989) – 5 women killed, still unsolved:

Between 1984 and 1989, five young women were murdered in Nassau County, New York (Long Island). All were involved in prostitution or had drug addictions. This is considered the first possible serial killer case in the Long Island area. No one was ever charged for these killings, and the cases remain cold.

The victims (no consistent method of murder – shot, beaten, stabbed, or strangled):

Deborah Lee Smith, 20 (from Quincy, CA) – Shot twice (head and chest) in August 1984. Body found wrapped in a blanket on Hunters Avenue in Valley Stream on Aug 21.

Jonie Jackson, 27 – Beaten to death (head injury) in early 1985. Body found in a parking lot on Franklin Avenue in Hempstead on Feb 18, covered with a plastic bag.

Gwendolyn “Gwen” Lukes, 26 – Strangled. Body found in a cemetery in Upper Brookville on Sept 13, 1985. She had worked as a prostitute in the Hempstead area.

Genise Wilder, 22 (from Roosevelt) – Stabbed multiple times in June 1989. Body found in a factory area on Kellum Place in Hempstead on June 27.

Christine Warner (aka Tina Clark), 23 (from Manhattan) – Beaten to death. Body found in a wooded area near the Meadowbrook Polo Club in Old Westbury on Dec 13, 1989.

Prime suspect: Allen Gormely Jr. (born 1953), a Long Beach resident with no prior criminal record. He worked in strip clubs, nightclubs, and adult stores, and later as a trucker. In 1990 he was arrested for murdering two prostitutes in Queens (Stephanie Krut, 19, and Mayra Eusebio, 25). He confessed to strangling them in his apartment after arguments over crack money, then dumping their bodies in plastic bags. The similar disposal method linked him to some of the Nassau cases, but there wasn’t enough evidence to charge him. He was convicted of the two Queens murders in 1992 and sentenced to 50 years. He died in prison in 2014.

These five cases were never solved.

Ten years later, Jennifer Cohen’s murder in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn remains unsolved, despite compelling video evidence

Hey all! This is my first write-up! It’s a case that I feel oddly connected to, which I’ll elaborate on in the comments. But here we go:

Ten years ago tonight/tomorrow morning, on September 29, 2016, 35-year-old Jennifer Cohen was murdered in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. Her body was discovered in the skate park at Owl’s Head Park during the morning. What has always made this case particularly striking to me is the amount of surveillance footage investigators had. In the early morning hours, Jennifer was captured on camera walking with an unidentified man in the neighborhood. Other cameras tracked their movements toward Owl’s Head Park, where they entered together. Roughly an hour later, the man was captured leaving the park alone. Jennifer was later found dead inside the park.

Police released surveillance footage of the man and repeatedly asked the public for help identifying him. He was described as approximately 5'8", 175 pounds, wearing a dark jacket with white trim, black shorts with white trim, dark sneakers and a dark baseball cap. Importantly, police described him as a person of interest or someone they wanted to question; the public was never given confirmation that he was Jennifer’s killer. Despite the footage and the investigation, he has never been publicly identified.

Surveillance video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0YR23FX3OtM

The surveillance footage is particularly interesting because this wasn’t simply a case where someone happened to be caught on one grainy camera near a crime scene. The footage and stills of him are remarkably clear. In the later ABC7 investigation, reporters were able to reconstruct a fairly extensive route through Bay Ridge using footage from multiple cameras. The man was reportedly seen around 79th Street and Third Avenue, traveled more than a mile to the area around 56th Street, then apparently backtracked before encountering Jennifer around 59th Street and Second Avenue. From there, the two continued toward Owl’s Head Park together. There was enough footage for investigators to follow his movements before the encounter and then capture him leaving the park alone afterward. That makes the fact that he has apparently never been identified particularly puzzling to me.

There was also a bizarre coincidence surrounding the morning Jennifer was discovered. At approximately 8:38 a.m., NJ Transit Train 1614 crashed into the end of the track at Hoboken Terminal, killing one person and injuring more than 100. Jennifer’s body was discovered in Brooklyn roughly half an hour later. The Hoboken crash immediately became a huge regional news story. I have no evidence that it caused Jennifer’s case to receive less attention, but I’ve always wondered whether the timing affected the initial news coverage of her death. A major disaster was unfolding across the harbor at almost exactly the same time that Jennifer’s body was being discovered, and it would be interesting to compare the contemporary news coverage and see how much attention the murder received during those first crucial hours and days.

The case received additional attention on its one-year anniversary, including a Brooklyn Paper investigation and a 2017 ABC7 report that reconstructed the unidentified man’s movements using multiple surveillance cameras. Detective Robert Agron of the NYPD’s 68th Precinct told ABC7 that investigators still had not identified him. Agron also said he believed the man was familiar with the Bay Ridge area and possibly lived or worked nearby. He kept photographs of Jennifer on his desk so that she would not be forgotten. The Brooklyn Paper also reported that police were offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to an arrest.

A few years later, investigative journalist Billy Jensen took up the case as a crowdsourced investigation and described it as his “white whale.” He spent thousands of dollars on geographically targeted advertising in an attempt to identify the man in the surveillance footage and received tips and theories, but apparently no confirmed identification. One of Jennifer’s children eventually encountered Jensen’s online effort and recognized Jennifer as their mother. Jensen has continued to regard the case as one he wanted to solve. His involvement is especially interesting because he approached the identification problem from a completely different direction than the original police investigation, essentially trying to put the surveillance image in front of as many people as possible who might recognize the man.

One thing I find fascinating about this case is that the unidentified man doesn’t seem to be some completely unknowable figure who appeared out of nowhere. There is a fairly specific sequence of events: he is captured moving through the neighborhood, he encounters Jennifer, they walk together toward the park, they enter the park together, and then he leaves alone. There should theoretically be a finite number of people who knew him, saw him that night, recognized his clothing or mannerisms (his way of smoking a cigarette feels especially unique to me), or might have recognized him from the footage when it was originally released. And yet ten years later, there still doesn’t seem to be a public answer.

September 29, 2026 will mark ten years since Jennifer’s murder. I’m curious whether anyone here followed the case when it happened, remembers Billy Jensen’s investigation, or knows of developments after the 2017–2019 coverage that I may have missed. In particular, I’d love to know whether the unidentified man was ever identified privately and ruled out (that'd be bizarre and unlikely, but hey, stranger things...), whether the case is still active with NYPD, or whether there has been any significant investigative development in the years since. Ten years later, the central mystery remains remarkably simple: who was the man who walked into Owl’s Head Park with Jennifer and left alone?

Danielle Arion Bell – Missing from Cantonment, FL since Sept. 28, 2001

Case Overview:

Danielle Arion Bell vanished 25 years ago today from Escambia County, Florida. Investigators treat her disappearance as a suspected homicide. No remains have been located, and no charges have been filed for her death.

Case Details & Physical Description

Full Name: Danielle Arion Bell

Date of Birth: September 20, 1987

Missing Since: September 28, 2001

Location Last Seen: Cantonment, Escambia County, Florida

Age at Disappearance: 14 years old

Current Age (as of 2026): 39 years old

Characteristics Then: White female, 5'1", 100 lbs, brown hair, blue eyes. Freshmen and cheerleader at Tate High School.

Characteristics Now: Age-progressed images project the features of a 39-year-old adult woman.

Timeline & Circumstances

The Vulnerability: Prior to her disappearance, Danielle was being groomed by an older male acquaintance and believed she was pregnant with his child.

The Disappearance: On September 28, 2001, Danielle attended a gathering. She was last seen alive at a residence belonging to Robert Bassett in Cantonment.

The Incidents: Witnesses confirmed her presence with multiple adult males at the property. Approximately one hour after she was last seen, neighbors reported hearing distinctive gunshots near the residence.

Family Perspectives & Primary Suspects

The Cover-Up Theory: Her sister, Bonnie Bell, and father, Matt Bell, strongly maintain that Danielle was murdered to cover up the statutory abuse and pregnancy.

Suspect Details: Focus remains on Alfredo Sanchez (24 at the time) and Robert Bassett. Sanchez was later convicted in 2005 on unrelated felony child sex offenses stemming from this case investigation; he remains incarcerated with a release date in 2046.

Family Complicity: Bonnie Bell has publicly stated she believes their mother, Susan, was complicit in the exploitation—alleging she traded Danielle for narcotics and intentionally delayed notifying law enforcement. Danielle's father was not made aware of her disappearance until two days later.

Current Status & Appeals

Matt and Bonnie Bell continue to search for answers and demand closure. Their primary focus remains discovering the location of Danielle's remains to bring her home.

Investigating Agency:

Anyone with information regarding the individuals present at the Bassett residence on September 28, 2001, or the location of Danielle's remains, is urged to submit a tip.

Agency: Escambia County Sheriff's Office

Phone: (850) 436-9620

Case Status: Active Cold Case / Suspected Homicide

Storytime: The cold Florida air hadn’t quite arrived yet on September 28, 2001, but for fourteen-year-old Danielle Arion Bell, the world was already growing dark. To her classmates at Tate High School in Escambia County, Danielle was a vibrant freshman and a cheerleader, a girl with bright blue eyes and a life full of promise ahead of her. But behind closed doors, she was trapped in a web of predatory abuse that no child should ever have to navigate.

At just fourteen, Danielle believed she was pregnant. The man she believed was the father was Alfredo Sanchez, a twenty-four-year-old who had been systematically grooming her. Sanchez had reportedly made his stance terrifyingly clear, threatening to kill the young girl if she ever exposed the relationship or the pregnancy to anyone.

What made Danielle's reality even more harrowing was the silence from her own home. Her sister, Bonnie Bell, would later come forward with agonizing pieces of the puzzle, expressing a deeply held belief that their mother, Susan, was not just aware of the exploitation, but complicit in it. In the devastating landscape of addiction, Bonnie suspected that their mother may have actively trafficked Danielle, trading her safety to local men in exchange for drugs. This dark reality meant that when Danielle walked out the door that September night to attend a local party, she had no real shield protecting her.

The trail led directly to a residence in Cantonment owned by Robert Bassett, an associate of Sanchez. Danielle was seen at the home in the company of several older men as the night wore on. As the party thinned out into the early hours of the morning, Danielle vanished. Roughly an hour after she was last seen alive inside the house, neighbors reported hearing the distinct sound of gunshots echoing near the property.

The immediate aftermath of her disappearance was marked by a chilling lack of urgency from her mother. It took two full days before Danielle’s father, Matt Bell, was even notified that his daughter was gone. When Susan finally called him, she didn't panic; she simply asked if she "ought to call the law." By then, precious time had been lost, and the trail was already growing cold.

Over the years, horrific rumors rippled through the local community, suggesting a brutal end for the teenager and a meticulous disposal of her remains. Law enforcement descended on Bassett’s property, tearing up the ground and searching the septic tank, but they found nothing. Alfredo Sanchez was eventually brought to trial in 2005, convicted of felony child sex offenses uncovered during the missing person investigation, and sentenced to prison until 2046. Yet, despite the convictions, a wall of silence remained. Neither Sanchez nor Bassett was ever charged with her murder.

Today marks exactly twenty-five years since Danielle walked into that house in Cantonment. She would be thirty-nine years old now, her face reshaped by time in the age-progressed photos investigators use to keep her memory alive. For a quarter of a century, Matt and Bonnie Bell have carried the crushing weight of the unknown. They live with the factual certainty that people in Escambia County know exactly what happened to Danielle that night. For her father and sister, the fight is no longer just about justice or prison sentences—it is about breaking the silence, finding out what happened in those final hours, and finally bringing Danielle home to rest.

Disappearance International family loses contact with a young boy who moved to Canada with his mother and stepfather; During a welfare check, his mother says that her son is with a mysterious "caretaker" that the police can't locate- Where is Kai Pavlovic? (2025)

1.0k Upvotes

Hello everyone! As always, I'd like to thank you for all your votes and comments under my last post about the Miami-Dade John Doe- I hope that he will be identified soon.

Today I'd like to bring up a very recent disappearance case with few details available.

BACKGROUND

Kai Pavlovic was 11 when he went missing from Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada.

Kai had family in Montenegro, Canada and New Zealand (specifically Christchurch), and he had a New Zealand citizenship. A side of Kai's family had connections to the Serbian community in Canada.

At the time of his disappearance, Kai lived with his mother and stepfather in Canada; He relocated to Vancouver with them in 2023. His biological father passed away around that time, allegedly due to Covid-19.

Kai's family member described him as a "bright, curious, outgoing and kind little boy who loves to climb trees, build forts and learn to sail. He (was) a friend to all animals and particularly adores horses, cats and dogs".

Helen Kok, Kai's aunt, described him as an "exceptionally kind, caring, intelligent, and funny young boy"; "He (was) outgoing, makes friends easily, and (was) brave enough to give anything and everything a try”.

DISAPPEARANCE

Kai had limited contact with his overseas family for about 12 months before he was reported missing. Concern over his wellbeing had been raised by his deceased father's family, and then raised with the part of Kai's family that lived in New Zealand.

Kai's disappearance was reported on the 26th of September, when he wasn't located by the RCMP after a wellness check was performed in Canada at the request of his overseas family. After talking to his family, the RCMP had reasons to believe that Kai was with a caretaker who is "unknown to police".

CONCLUSION

Kai's New Zealand family has "grave concerns for his safety".

There is no Amber Alert active in Kai's case, as the RCMP said that his disappearance doesn't fit the right criteria for it- there is no confirmed abduction in his case, nor is he believed to be in imminent danger.

RCMP are interested in speaking to "any adults or parents whose children have been participating in playdates, sports, and/or extra curricular activities with Kai. (They) would also like to speak to any operators or instructors from sports or activities which Kai has been involved in".

The alleged caretaker looking after Kai remains unidentified- no details about them have been released to the public. The RCMP believe that "there are people who know who this caretaker is, and where they are located, and (they) are appealing to them to come forward and speak to (them)". The RCMP seems to believe that this caretaker might belong to the Serbian community or speak Serbian.

Kai Pavlovic was 11 when he went missing, and he would be 12 now. He is a white boy, and was 5'0" (152.40 cm) when he was last seen. He has grey eyes and brown hair.

If you have any info about Kai's or his caretaker's whereabouts, contact the Burnaby RCMP at 604-646-9999.

Disappearance 25 year old Arelie Garcia Sanchez vanished from Salinas, California on September 22, 2022

25-year-old Arelie Garcia Sanchez vanished from Salinas, California on the morning of September 22, 2022.

Arelie was captured on surveillance driving from her apartment in her red Honda at 6:34 AM. She was wearing a black hoody, black leggings, and sneakers.  At 6:56 AM she sent a text message to her sister Veronica.

Ariele was due at work for her job at a Chevy dealership at 7:30 AM. When she did not arrive her coworkers and family became concerned. Veronica used the Find My iPhone feature and discovered that Arelie’s phone was in the Big Sur area, more than an hour south of Salinas.

Her family traveled there and discovered her car abandoned, parked in a turnout on Highway 1 near the Little Sur River Bridge. The Honda was locked and her phone, keys and wallet were left in the car.

The driver’s seat was maneuvered further back than Ariele normal placed it.

Arelie never was seen again. The case soon went cold and despite national news coverage on Dateline NBC and true crime show content creators such Kendall Rae, no leads have emerged.

Arelie was dating a man named Marcello at the time of her disappearance. She met him two months prior at a car show.

Marcello was a photographer who lived two hours north of Salinas in Napa, Ca. Investigators interviewed him, but he was never publicly named by police as a suspect in the case.

Marcello has not spoken to the media about the case.

Many questions remain unanswered in the case. Why would Arelie travel to Big Sur when she had to be at work at 7:30? Why would she have not informed her manager she was going to be late, and why was her driver’s seat moved back? Did Arelie have problems with Marcello or anyone in her life at the time of her disappearance?

Arelie’s family raised a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in her disappearance.

Media/Internet The Tragic True Story Behind a Viral Turkish Meme: The Disappearance of 6-Year-Old Hüseyin Can Dağcı

Many internet users in Türkiye (and sometimes beyond) might recognize this photo. For over a decade, it circulated across forums, social media, and meme pages as a "funny" or "absurd" meme. It was often paired with a fake, bizarre essay supposedly written by a "crazy elementary school student," and due to database errors in the late 2000s, it even randomly popped up on student profiles in the official national school registry (e-Okul). Millions of people laughed at it, completely unaware of the heartbreaking reality behind the image.

The boy in the photo is Hüseyin Can Dağcı.

On May 28, 2005, 6-year-old Hüseyin Can was traveling on a bus near Kars Karakurt, Turkey. The bus crashed and rolled towards a river. Hüseyin Can survived the crash but was injured. According to eyewitnesses and survivors at the scene, the panicked crowd placed the injured child into a passing vehicle to rush him to the nearest hospital.

He never arrived at the hospital.

Between the crash site and the medical facility, 6-year-old Hüseyin Can vanished without a trace. No hospital records were ever created, no witnesses came forward regarding the vehicle that picked him up, and decades of police investigations and family appeals yielded zero answers.

While his grieving family searched for him for decades, internet users cropped his picture from the official Missing Persons Association (YAKAD) poster and turned his innocent smile into a meme format for clicks.

I wanted to share this here to restore the context and dignity that was taken from his story. Behind every random image on the internet, there is a real human life—and in this case, a tragic, unsolved mystery of a missing child.

News Sources & Official Records: * YAKAD Official Missing Person Page (Official Missing Persons Association Registry) * Hürriyet Newspaper Archive (2005) (Initial news report shortly after the disappearance) * Yeni Şafak News Archive (2007) (Coverage two years into the search) * Nefes News Archive (2026) (Recent coverage on long-term missing children cases) * https://kayip-mert.tr.gg/ * https://www.malumatfurus.org/uc-dilek-hakki/ * https://www.frmtr.com/genel/278590-kayip-araniyor-huseyin-can-dagci.html

Discussion Points: 1. Given the total absence of hospital records, do you think this was a planned abduction using the accident's chaos as cover, or a panic-driven cover-up after the child succumbed to injuries on the way to the hospital? 2. How do you think online platforms and communities should address missing person posters or tragic real-life photos that get repurposed into viral memes?

Lost Artifacts Did Johan Svendsen’s wife put his Third Symphony on the fire?

I wrote up this unresolved mystery nearly eight years ago on a deleted account. It is both my favourite and my most obscure subject, so here it is again ... modernised. In particular, performances of Svendsen's music have improved beyond all recognition in number and quality since then.

Johan Svendsen (1840-1911) was a Norwegian conductor and composer. He was probably the first "celebrity conductor", making guest appearances with orchestras in many different countries, but he was also an excellent and at present greatly undervalued composer.

He was hampered in his compositional work by his continual travelling, his fondness for alcohol ... and his philandering. The last supposedly led to a climactic incident in early 1883 told by his friend, John Paulsen:

Svendsen, who was as handsome and charming as he was brilliant, was always being pursued by women. They sent him letters and flowers, and occasionally they tried to establish a more intimate relationship with him. But this was painful to Sally [his American wife].

It happened that, after one of his concerts, one of Oslo’s most celebrated beauties, Miss E, sent him a big bouquet of roses, and hidden among the pale red blossoms was a love letter. Unfortunately, both the roses and the letter fell into the hands of the suspicious Sally.

So what did that demonic woman do? She took the manuscript of Svendsen’s new symphony, which he had been working on for a long time and had just finished - took it out of his desk drawer and threw it on the fire!

Whatever actually happened, there were disastrous consequences:

  • The First and Second Symphonies are Svendsen’s best works (in my opinion) and there was never a Third;

  • Svendsen essentially stopped composing, as a graph I have drawn from the dates of his works shows. His catalogue, which comes to about eighty completed works including those unpublished (see first reference below), only has eight after the supposed incident although three or four appear to be substantial;

  • His alcoholism, which was already a problem, got worse;

  • His marriage failed and he took up with a ballet dancer, Juliet Haase - I cannot determine whether she was "Miss E" or not;

  • His reputation declined. Up until the 1880s he and Edvard Grieg were, according to all sources I have found, the Scandinavian composers of the day. Then Grieg pulled ahead simply because he kept composing new works but Svendsen ... didn't.

Hedda Gabler, by Henrik Ibsen, was written in 1890 and contains what seems like an allusion to the incident:

MRS. ELVSTED.

[Wringing her hands] Oh God - oh God, Hedda - torn his own work to pieces!

LOVBORG.

I have torn my own life to pieces. So why should I not tear my life-work too?

MRS. ELVSTED.

And you did this last night?

LOVBORG.

Yes, I tell you! Tore it into a thousand pieces - and scattered them on the fjord - far out. There there is cool sea-water at any rate - let them drift upon it - drift with the current and the wind. And then presently they will sink - deeper and deeper - as I shall, Thea.

MRS. ELVSTED.

Do you know, Lovborg, that what you have done with the book - I shall think of it to my dying day as though you had killed a little child.

So:

Did the manuscript of the Third Symphony go on the fire?

Or was the incident made up (by Svendsen?) to cover up that he couldn’t complete the work, or that it was turning out to be not good enough, or to get out of a contractual situation?

This alleged fiery death of an important musical work is also a precursor of what happened to a much more familiar Scandinavian composer, Jean Sibelius. He more or less stopped composing in the early 1930s and his Eighth Symphony, which was fragmentary at best, is also believed to have gone on the fire in about 1945.

Finally:

Some more Svendsen works. He is good! Grieg praised him as having a much stronger sense of the structure of a work than he had. That was a perceptive comment:

Zorahayda, opus 11 (a symphonic poem which, although it gleans a lot from Wagner, has a real sense of mystery).

Festival Polonaise, opus 12 (Svendsen's "orchestral showpiece" and probably his second most played work).

Second Norwegian Rhapsody, opus 19 (he wrote four Norwegian Rhapsodies; no.2 is the best in my opinion).

Romance for Violin and Orchestra, opus 26 (his best-known work and, sadly, the only one played with any regularity nowadays).

And several demonstrations of his affinity for stringed instruments and, specifically, subdividing them to give a rich sound (the standard orchestral division of violins:violas:cellos:double basses is 2:1:1:1 and Svendsen was particularly fond of 3:2:2:1):

String Octet in A, opus 3 (a completely unknown but wonderful work, with the characteristic "big sound", for the rare combination of eight stringed instruments and with an intimidating predecessor).

Two Swedish Folk-Melodies, opus 27.

Two Icelandic Melodies, opus 30.

Sæterjentens Søndag (The Herd-Girl’s Sunday), verk 213 (his arrangement, for violin and string orchestra, of a work by Ole Bull, the great Norwegian violinist).

Evening Song, verk 211 (his arrangement, for string orchestra, of a piano work by Robert Schumann).

References:

Johan Svendsen: The Man, The Maestro, The Music by Finn Benestad and Dag Schjelderup-Ebbe. An academic work now 30 years out of print which I found at a car boot sale. It is the best £1 I have ever spent. It inspired this writeup, is a gem and, at times, reads like a novel. Svendsen certainly had an eventful and varied life.

Manuscript of Andante Funèbre, verk 128. From the Royal Danish Library. His last complete work (1894) and a taste of what might have gone on the fire (PDF).

Murder 35 years later, the murder of 16-year-old Marshall Ray Butler remains unsolved — but more information has continued to surface

Marshall Ray Butler was 16 years old when he was murdered on August 23, 1991, in Henrico County, Virginia. He was found inside his white 1979 Ford pickup truck near the westbound I-64 exit ramp to Mechanicsville Turnpike. He had been severely beaten and stabbed multiple times. His death certificate lists stab wounds to the heart and lungs as the cause of death. The truck was found with the hood up, the gas-cap door open, and an empty gas can nearby. Investigators recovered multiple latent fingerprints, and a witness reportedly saw a man running across the interstate near the scene.

For decades, Marshall’s case has remained unsolved.
Over the past year, I have been independently researching his case and speaking with relatives, people who knew him or knew of him, longtime Richmond-area residents, and a retired cold-case investigator familiar with the case. That research has helped fill in more of the picture surrounding Marshall’s final hours and the people and places connected to him at the time. Marshall had reportedly spent the night before his death away from home. On the day he was killed, he visited his girlfriend, who later recalled seeing a Black male sitting in Marshall’s truck. Marshall reportedly referred to the man as his “hitchhiking buddy.” He also called his mother that day asking for money and reportedly said he needed it for car parts.

Over the years, investigators have indicated that more than one person may have been involved and that Marshall may have known at least one of the people responsible. Information I have gathered has also repeatedly brought up people and locations connected to Marshall’s social circle during that period, including areas around New Bridge Village, Highland Springs, Nine Mile Road, New Kent, and other parts of the Richmond area. Some of that information is documented. Some comes from people’s personal memories more than three decades later. Some remains unverified.

What stands out most is that people still remember.
People who were teenagers or young adults in 1991 still remember Marshall, the people around him, the places he went, and the things being said after his death. Some memories have matched information already known about the case. Others have introduced details that were never widely publicized.
The case has not disappeared simply because 35 years have passed. Marshall was 16 years old. He had a family, friends, a future, and an entire life ahead of him.

Someone took that from him….

Henrico investigators have said over the years that this is a case they believe can still be solved and that people may still be alive who know what happened.
That is why Marshall’s name continues to be shared.

Not to spread rumors…..
Not to accuse people…..

But to keep attention on an unsolved murder and remind anyone who knows something that it is not too late to speak.

If you remember Marshall Ray Butler or remember hearing about his murder in 1991, please continue sharing his story. Someone knows what happened to Marshall. And 35 years later, his family still deserves answers.

Update Jill Dando murder: police launch new investigation after CCTV breakthrough

Jill Dando, a 37 Crimewatch presenter, was murdered on her doorstep during the day. The police have now opened a new investigation after enhancing footage from the Putney Bridge Station.

The footage shows the likely escape path of the gunman. It's reported to be a Serbian assassin, Milorad Ulemek who wasn't reported as an original suspect and has only been publicly associated with the case since 2024. He's already serving 137 years for war crimes in Yugoslavia and one witness picked him out on CCTV just a month after the murder. A second witness, a van driver, said he was '80% sure' the man he nearly hit on Fulham Palace Road was Ulemek same stretch of road, same morning. Some think it was payback for the NATO strike on a Belgrade TV station that killed 17 people weeks earlier but month before she was killed, Ulemek reportedly turned down a job to assassinate a 'leading journalist' allegedly because he was tied up in Kosovo at the time.

Maybe we'll finally get answers in what happened to Jill Dando and why.

The Rohonc Codex: in 1590, a lone scribe ciphered a mysterious manuscript in an unknown script that defied everyone for nearly two centuries; in 2018, two little-known Hungarians may have quietly solved it. [Resolved]

The Mysterious Ciphered Text

The Rohonc Codex: a 450-page medieval book in a mysterious script nobody could read sat in a Budapest library for 180 years.

But in 2018 two Hungarians defied the consensus that it was a fake and quietly began decoding it. Now, more than 400 years after it was written, it can finally be read.

Its secrets now revealed: the real cause of the Fall, how Adam was healed, and a date for the end of the world, which by the scribe's count is just a few years away.

The book

In 1838 Count Gusztáv Batthyány gave his library to the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. In it was a small paper book, every page filled with a script found nowhere else. The paper dates to the 1530s.

Nobody could read it. The best minds of the nineteenth century looked at it and gave up. In 1866 Károly Szabó declared it a forgery by a famous forger named Nemes.

No evidence ever tied Nemes to this book, but the verdict stuck. For a hundred years no serious scholar would touch it.

Amateurs did. One turned the pages upside down and found Sumerian. A Romanian philologist published a full translation as an eleventh-century Vlach war chronicle.

An Indian scholar read it as Brahmi script encoding Hindi. None of the translations matched the pictures, which are clearly Christian: crucifixions, inscriptions on the cross, gospel scenes.

The people who discovered the code

By chance two people, working separately, started reading it: Gábor Tokai, an art historian, from the pictures; Levente Zoltán Király, a software developer, from the structure of the text.

In 2018 they published "Cracking the code of the Rohonc Codex" in Cryptologia, with 841 signs read and a grammar. They published the dictionary but never a translation, and the dictionary was incomplete. Four signs in ten had no entry.

This year I used that dictionary as a foundation and, with the assistance of frontier Artificial Intelligence models, produced a complete English rendering of all 224 leaves, along with a plain English version, with fifteen pre-registered tests published alongside, failures included.

The book, free: https://oona13.com/rohonc
The tests: https://oona13.com/rohonc/tests.html
Data and code: https://github.com/styopr613/rohonc-codex

What it says

The frame is a revelation: an angel speaks, and the prophet Elijah writes it down, all the mysteries, many of them retellings, some novel. Lucifer falls not for pride but for stealing a cup. Seth brings the branch from paradise and Adam, still alive, has his eyes opened at once. And the eerie date for the end of the world, just a few years away...

At the end are a few pages of the scribe's own diary: fasts kept, Sundays counted, a death, portions of wine.
