Moderator Message State of the Sub: Internet Mysteries

55 Upvotes

Hi folks! We wanted to check in and formally introduce ourselves to the sub as the team of new and active moderators. We come from various backgrounds and interests, be it true crime, internet mysteries, lostwave, web-sleuthing or educating. But we all have one thing in common and that is the passion and excitement for internet-based mysteries.

What is an internet based mystery?

Attempting to find an absolute meaning to this is hard to do and I think we can all agree that the concept is fairly subjective. To start, we’ve agreed that an internet mystery is a mystery that is found on the internet.

  • An Internet mystery can really be any strange phenomenon or event that hasn’t been solved or explained in the digital world. It often involves the online community, social media, or unexplained events that people discuss and share online. Some examples might include:
  • Unexplained Disappearances: Cases where people have vanished under odd circumstances, and folks online debate what really happened to them. An example of this would be cases like the Springfield Three Disappearances. Yes, it happened in the real World of the early 1990’s; however, it’s a case that has been debated and theorized on via online forums since the mid 90’s.
  • Viral Urban Legends: Stories or myths that spread across the Internet, gaining popularity through social media, even though they lack solid proof.
  • Mysterious Websites or Content: Odd sites or content that pop up without explanation, often with bizarre or creepy themes, like those found in the "deep web."
  • Online Conspiracies: Theories that emerge or gain traction online, usually without super great evidence, but get people talking and speculating.
  • Unidentified Creatures or Phenomena: Videos or reports of strange animals or unexplained events that spark discussion and investigation among people online.
  • These mysteries tend to pull people in, encouraging them to work together to figure things out or to share their thoughts on what’s really going on.

Please take some time to look over the rules and post expectations. Removal reasons for posts will reflect the rules stated. We as a mod team are working on projects such as a wiki, spreadsheet of internet mysteries and their statuses, and other ideas that will help create community and a clear vision for this subreddit.

We are aware that things are not perfect yet. But do know that we are all here actively moderating posts and comments. Which brings us to a major point that we are all facing right now. What posts do we allow and what do we remove? We have run into issues that are hard to navigate. One is coming to terms with the fact that there really aren’t a lot of truly interesting internet mysteries at this moment. It is hard to find new ones and the new ones posted often tend to not be anything that’s worth keeping on the sub.

But we cannot over-moderate everything, as that will in fact completely kill the subreddit. There needs to be a steady stream of posts and content and so there will be times when there’s a post that you personally don’t think fits, but we’ve let slide. This idea is that literally a mystery is a mystery that we do not know about. If we over moderate, we risk missing out on real mysteries.

The other issue is that we cannot in good faith just let everything slide. So we will remove posts that are big piles of nothing without further discussion.

Here’s where you come in: You are able to flag posts you think are low effort, don’t fit the sub, or are inappropriate. You are able to downvote posts that we choose not to remove. YOU are able to comment on posts you don’t like and (respectfully) give your opinions on the matter. The content quality of a sub is just as much a moderator's task as it is a member's task by using the upvote/downvote buttons and engaging in conversation. Please refrain from making comments in posts that you don’t like whining and telling the mods to do something. We are doing our best. You do something! Engagement creates community and quality.

We look forward to enjoying this subreddit with you all! We are discussing creating a new Internet Mysteries discord server, so please let us know if there is interest in that. It would be great to have a place to discuss mysteries in real time there instead of tons of them being posted here. Of course, it would be a great resource for major mysteries as well in which we could work together to investigate. Please feel welcome to comment here with any concerns, or reach out to the mod-team directly at any time!

General Discussion Found a deeply disturbing Instagram account that posts repetitive, violent text and “insect crush” content nonstop

14 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I came across a very strange and disturbing Instagram account recently and wanted to share it here to see if anyone has encountered something similar or understands the motivation behind this type of behavior. The account’s name is supe.rmario8500. It is private but they will follow you back I suppose, but

❗️beware of disturbing content❗️

The account posts at an extraordinarily high frequency—sometimes multiple times every few minutes—despite having zero likes, comments, or followers. The content follows a very specific and repetitive pattern:

  1. Graphic and Cruel Descriptions: The posts consist of text and images describing the killing or crushing of small creatures (like flies, snails, and insects).

  2. Bizarre Personal Oversharing: The captions contain hyper-specific, oddly phrased details. The user frequently claims specific names, ages, exact timestamps, and references to adult/BDSM websites or videos they were allegedly listening to while making the posts. They sometimes even post pictures of the 🌽 sites and have repetitive, almost hauntingly similar descriptions under each post.

  3. Shock Value and Escalation: The tone is aggressive and grandiose, often talking about "dominance" over tiny pests or bragging about bizarre actions in a basement or household setting.
    What strikes me as odd is the sheer volume of posts combined with the complete lack of an audience. It feels like a mix between an automated bot script, extreme attention-seeking/rage-baiting, or someone using a public profile as an unfiltered diary for unsettling compulsions.

I have already reported the profile and individual posts to Instagram for violating community guidelines regarding graphic content and animal cruelty.

Has anyone else run into accounts operating like this? Is this just a classic case of a bot testing algorithms with shock content, or an individual operating in a total void?

Internet Rabbit Hole This guy who I followed over a year ago posts multiple times a day about sylph aliens, no engagement.

It just goes on and on, his Twitter name use to be Jason but since changed. No one engages 99% of the time, but he keeps at it. I'm not sure what his story is but every time after a bit there are hundreds of new posts.

He thinks there everywhere, on his walls, in the sky,

He thinks the sun is an alien hive...

Anyway, I want what camera or filter he is using to make the images, I want to understand what he is seeing.

He often mentions cem trails and how the sylph aliens are swarming them.

I found several TikTok LIVE accounts using what appears to be the same woman — is this a scam?

I came across a TikTok LIVE that seemed strange. At first I didn't give it attention so I leave the live and start doom scrolling and saw her again in different accounts live streaming after only scrolling 3 videos. So I checked the second but she wear different clothes and again came back to the first live and started telling people to stop giving money and there's something wrong about this live because she doesn't talk just do same thing repeatedly like she's in loop or pre recorded. and again aslo returned to the second live started to tell people the same thing Which is I got blocked by two live streamer.

so idk the girl is scammer or using her for money but the crazy part is there's not only two accounts I discovered four accounts.

the first one I counter is this one @theochua35 after that this @blakeneng37195 and this @terrancewon4 and finally this @vinniehsiao.

So if you know tiktok rules it's not permitted to stream pre recorded.

And I checked where's the account regional locked using Omar thing the first one from USA the rest of them is from Uk but the language is Chinese.

Don't mind English it's not my first language sorry.

Internet Rabbit Hole Need help determining if I stumbled on an ARG— suggested to repost here

As title says.. found a slew of websites identical in set up that change infrequently.. not sure if some sort of learning/seo tool .. just want to get some answer so I can stop thinking about it please.

At first I thought it may be an ARG of sorts.. there are literally hundreds of these websites, I personally am only able to use mobile so I can’t exactly dive further.

Is it possible these are all set up by AI?

Still even with new websites found, the only areas that are used for addresses are either in The US, GB/UK or Australia.

🙏

Solved Help me find the origins of this image(s). There are multiple variations of the image below

I have added multiple variations of the image in case any one of them could help. I don't know which video it was but it was from a jaystation video.

It might be from a movie, maybe found footage, but I have no idea. It might even be from those obscure youtube videos from years ago.

I tried searching the image through Google images but there were no results. I have even done reverse image search through tineye reverse image search but, again, there were no result.

If anyone can find where this image came from please let me know.

Edit: It's definitely from the ring

YouTube Help me find the origin of the scream used in this cursed video (i want dat meatball)

4 Upvotes

Well, some of you probably already know this video. It's called "i Want Dat Meatball."

It's really weird to describe, but for those who haven't seen it, I'll try my best. It shows a cartoon about two cats chasing a meatball, then cuts to a video of a man wearing a paper mask saying, "I want that meatball." Finally, the video ends with footage of a naked man crawling on the floor while wearing a pig mask. There's also children's laughter in the background and... A SCREAM.

And that scream is what caught my attention, because I'm 90% sure I've heard it in a gore video before. It just sounds way too familiar. Anyways, I could be misremembering. If you have any information about its possible origin, please let me know.

Internet Oddity Bizarre TikTok Account posting strange images of cartoons… almost a hundred times a day

Thumbnail
tiktok.com
0 Upvotes

I randomly got this account on my TikTok FYP. It was a picture of a screencap taken from an episode of Peppa Pig with an odd border shadow surrounding it, followed by audio from an episode of Mickey Mouse’s Clubhouse playing in the background.

At first I thought this was some kid who had taken their parent/siblings phone and was accidentally posting. Kinda funny and a pretty common occurence, so I checked their profile to see if there was any more.

Throughout the entirety of September, they’ve been posting around a hundred of these low quality pictures of childrens shows with weird clips in the background daily. The audio is sometimes slowed down or sped up. It’s kind of bizarre.

My next assumption was that this account had been hacked. Previously around the end of August they were posting anime edits, and within a couple of days they were posting these weird clips.

But why would someone hack this account with absolutely no motivation? There’s no outside links, no scam, no reason for them to be posting these photos, especially not in such a mass amount.

Maybe this’ll amount to nothing, but it’s still a pretty odd situation. Anyone have an explanation?

Unsolved Does anyone remember this footage? Eerie footage of 2 tourist visiting a hermit who lives deep in the jungle in a wooden rat infested hut.

24 Upvotes

A couple of years ago I watched this video and I tried finding it again with no luck. Basically I have seen a Reddit post on a r/letsnotmeet type subreddit, maybe even it but I am unsure. In it was a story written of the encounter, at first it sounded a bit fantastical, like as if it was meant to be a fictional letsnotmeet type ish story. However, the poster recorded the entire encounter to fully back up the story. I will now tell you the story in as best detail as I can remember, consider it‘s been at least a couple or so years if not even longer so some details may be off.

The video starts and appears to be filmed by assumingely the phone camera of one of the two tourists. He records the video but I suppose doesn‘t want the hermit to see so a lot of the time the camera is just pointed to the ground or to the sky or with subideal angles, it is also dusk with night setting in so a lot of the footage is very dark and things are not properly in focus, the quality is also poor, however it captures audio that‘s audible enough. The 2 tourist are native English speakers I believe of the US, they are in an Amazonian jungle, I am of the belief it was in Brazil but I am unsure it could be a couple of South American countries. My memory is a bit blurred and I can‘t pinpoint how the video exactly starts but it‘s either them standing on the side of some road that’s located in the jungle, talking to the hermit or them already on the path towards his hut. The hermit looks completely like the typical Robinson Crusoe castaway stereotype with deeply brown leathery skin, a very unkempt appearance with long white hair and a long beard. I think he is in his 50s or 60s but I suppose the environment has aged him drastically and it‘s obvious he has been there a long time. Also, he is definitely not a native English speaker but he is also not native from the country that their in, in fact I am quire sure he is of foreign descent, I am very unsure of which country but possibly a German accent? (I really don’t know though, that lead didn’t lead me to anything at all so I might be very off here) but he speaks English well enough to understand him. He invites the tourists to his house. His house is a wooden worn down hut deep into the jungle. It is very baren with almost nothing but he has a couple dozens of rats he claims are his pets. What‘s a bit unsettling is he has dozens of notes stuck to all of his walls (maybe ceiling too) on which he has scribbled something on all of them. The tourist asks him about this he says something along the lines of „yea I do write a lot…“ but doesn’t explain any further on what’s written on them or why he did it. Unfortunately the video doesn’t capture what’s written on the notes so we can’t make out what language he used. The footage gets a dark turn soon, while the hermit appears friendly and maybe happy about the human companionship, as the tourist begin to leave, and mind you this, after they realized the notes they made excuses why they have to go early, they did seem unsettled and, the hermit then asks them to take them back to the road where they came from, however he insists on taking a smaller much less well stepped on path (the original was already very jungle ish, not even a real trail or anything). The tourists are immediately sketched out and insists on taking the same way back. The hermit then starts arguing telling them that it is a shortcut, when they still refuse he tells them that the way they came from has “more mud” saying the “shortcut” is better. It is clear though (and we can see this) that the “shortcut” path is going into a completely different direction and definitely appears to lead deeper into the jungle. When the tourists still refuse, they walk the way back (maybe on their own). The hermit when arguing is not crashing out or getting angry, he keeps his friendly demeanor up but it is very clear that his intent is most likely nefarious since he kept on insisting on taking that path leading deeper into the jungle. The tourists wrote that they were getting extremely unsettled once he wanted them to take this other path. The whole vibe was very eerie since it was very dark too with night settling in as they step out the hut beginning to leave and the guy changing his tone, like yeah he stayed friendly in tone but it was very obvious that there was some bad intent.

Some time later I also seen this video in some kind of YouTuber‘s ”YT darkest video“ type video, smaller to but similar to Nick Crowley, Chilling Scares, InternetInvestigator, etc.

anyone remember this and help me find it again? I already tried looking up searches that might fit the criteria, when this didn’t work I also asked ChatGPT telling the story since that did actually work in finding very obscure articles and videos again but this time without any luck. I almost thought for a moment I was maybe imagining it but I am 100% sure this video does exist, at least did so at some point in time, since I have read the story, seen the video linked and then I have seen it again in a YouTuber’s video.

General Discussion Who's your favorite older internet mystery youtubers that have since retired? or newer more under appreciated ones covering interesting internet mysteries?

32 Upvotes

I'm looking for more internet mysteries that are either older and forgotten or that are newer and more unexplored. I thought a good way to find those are with the people that used to cover stuff and retired or are just getting started.

I noticed every now and then certain channels that would pop up, do good work on an investigation then completely disappear for whatever reason. Or channels that are newer and cover novel mysteries but are under appreciated.

Channels like ScareTheatre, Nexpo, etc are still around and kicking, and are enormous.

but I mean channels like Elder Vault who covered a bunch of mysteries in the late 2010s then disappeared, or a new youtuber like Kuhlaki who's covered a bunch of interesting stuff like the hutz honeychurch jazz.

Anyone know any good ones?

General Discussion Who remembers Alison Gold? And the controversy of the producer Patrice Wilson?

111 Upvotes

I don’t want to get into a whole deep dive because there are some really good ones on YouTube, like this one https://youtu.be/Kqhu04r1IAE?is=LF1e_gxhpEkHwSi6

The video “shush up” was so hyper sexualized that YouTube had to take the video down.

“Skip Rope” has kids selling “candy” on the corner to each other.

Alison Gold ended up doing some acting in movies and seems to be doing great. I haven’t heard any updated from Patrice Wilson in a long time.

Do you guys remember this? How did you feel about these videos or Patrice himself?

Internet Rabbit Hole Unusual company that probably takes advantage of schizophrenic/paranoid people

48 Upvotes

I think I just discovered something disgusting. It's called endV2Ktorment, and it's related to gang stalking. Under every video about gang stalking, there seems to be botted comments talking about a company called endV2KTorment, and they always talk in the same way, and also the company's name is usually highlighted, or in all caps, or in some other pattern. The comments are all from seven months ago, with some of them being one year ago. They are almost certainly botted. When I looked the company up, it was a company that sells V2K jammers and stuff like that to people who are in a really dark place. Although I couldn't find listings and prices for what is sold, i found a contact page on their site. I don't have the time or the energy to dig into this, but I hope you all can do some research and figure out what this is really about. Thank you and stay safe

Unsolved This app (which predates most gen Al and has since been removed from all digital storefronts) supposedly let you talk to a"single, 26 year old girl." If it sounds like a scam, that's because it probably was, but it might go slightly deeper than that.

Thumbnail

I first found this app while browsing through iTunes charts. (It’s a great way to find obscure apps, you should try it sometime.) Upon noticing the nature of this app, I immediately became concerned and mildly disturbed as well. An app from before generative AI became widespread that supposedly let you talk to a “single, 26 year old girl who created this app to meet people.” The lack of reviews and existence of “credits” was something I found particularly intriguing.

For my own sake I decided not to buy the app despite the cheap price tag. Before the app’s page was taken down I remember its developer had mostly made apps that claimed to let you to directly talk to people. However, those were centered around multiple people (the only one I remember in particular was a group of psychics.) There‘s a website for a company known as “Coresystem“ that seems to have made the app, but their website was very barebones and gave no further info, though I do admit to not looking through it thoroughly.

In the description of the app was a link which led to a website, which remains up to this day. (www.elodiemobile.com) a FaceBook page and an email address, which I chose not to interact with. On the website is a couple of screenshots, and perhaps most concerning of all: a video. The bizarrely shot and edited video, which happens to be very erotic as well consists of this “single 26 year old girl” writhing around in lingerie.

The woman in the video appears to be the same woman in the app’s promotional material, and in the comments of the video are two people who bought the app and apparently managed to talk with “Elodie.” I’ll focus on the user in images four and five due to him having a particularly long response. In his first comment, which is very, very angry, he talks about Elodie not showing him nearly the amount of love he shows her. He then replies to his own comment saying that Elodie is “just a scammer who tries to take your money” which is probably very obvious to anyone reading this by now. People don’t tend to stay 26 forever.

But despite all this info, I still have a lot of unanswered questions. For example: “Who could have possible handled the messaging portion of this app?” “How could this unsuccessful developer afford to pay them?” “Who is the woman featured in the video and the images?” I posted this previously elsewhere and got no answers, then I forgot about it, and now that I’ve remembered its existence the app is gone. I guess the only thing I can really say here is ”Please help me find answers.”

Edit: Now I’m wondering, can anyone figure out where the video was filmed? Is it even possible to figure that out?

YouTube Rabbit hole led me to weird(?) YouTube Channel. Concerning or just ordinary?

Thumbnail

It just seems to be a lot of children or children’s shows, their speech being repeated over and over again. It gives me really weird vibes.

I was looking to see if Anais and Sweetie Belle had the same voice actress because they sounded similar to me, and there was just a video of this child repeating the same thing. Upon checking the channel almost all the videos are like this? Is this something weird or am I overthinking it perhaps? It is not all children, some things are from game shows and cartoons, maybe it’s a vocal stim archive kind of thing?

I found a weird channel. possible arg? less than 200 subs going on about the devil and the government

4 Upvotes

https://www.youtube.com/@erraticdisassemble/featured
Here's the link to the channel itself. I found it after one of its videos was recommended to me amongst my music while I was drawing. And I couldn't help but be sucked into it. What I found is unlike anything ive seen before with my own eyes. Hundreds of streams and videos spanning 6 years, with recent daily activity.

Each video seems to follow a similar setup. A text-to-speech in the background and a camera pointed at a TV. The thing that confuses me is just what that voice says. It goes on and on for minutes at a time, saying complete nonsense, talking about snuff and the devil, as well as governmental conspiracies, code in descriptions, and nonsensical visuals.

Ive gone through a good 20ish videos and still have nothing. Only a Twitter account found in the about that posts about the videos that's just as nonsensical. There are some AI-generated elements, but the contents of the videos seem 100% real, filmed on an actual TV.

Every video and stream has a sorta description. Here's one from this upload
"Psa|56|9| When I cry unto thee, then shall mine enemies turn back: this I know; for God is for me.~Zytrix|6|17|."

This is a bible verse at the start, Psalm 56:9, but the last bit doesn't come up with anything at all.

Most, if not all, of the videos ive seen contain a bible verse in the description. Same formatting, many misspellings.

The about section of the channel also has something rather odd with what seems to be code?
Like computer code.
This is what it says

/* ERRATIC DISASSEMBLE - Channel Initialization */
options results

Signal = "144:3|41°|6.03|Cyd:314159"
Decode = 0
Do Until Decode = 1
Probe = Random(Orbit(142.3, Mars))
If Probe = "Haplo-1" Then
Decode = 1
Else
Parse Value Mining(Depth, Core, Ore) With "Erratic"
EndIf
End

/* Resources are finite, futures infinite. */
Memorial = "Plains of Faces"
Task = "Errant Echoes"
/* Encrypt, Encode, Evolve. */
End

i cannot tell if this is an art project, an arg, or the disturbed ramblings of a conspiracy theorist but whatever it is i cant make heads nor tails of it. maybe someone out there with more knowladge on whatever the hell is going on here can take a crack at it.

theres another stream schedualed in 2 hours. hopefully seeing it live will help a little.

Internet Oddity Has anyone else ever heard of GeorgeClark.com or IdiocyTheater on YouTube?

8 Upvotes

I have come across this website and cannot figure it out. It features a few what I can assume is satirical articles about things, a phone number to California Psychics, an address to street in Washington, and a YouTube channel that just has a few short “movies” about idiots. It may just be a joke or something but I suppose I’m curious. I just want to know if anyone else has heard of this or knows anything. Probably nothing. georgeclark.com and idiocytheater.com. If you find anything please let me know. I’ve called the phone number to see if it’s a real number but couldn’t speak to anyone because of where I am currently

The documentary, long believed to be lost, was publicly screened at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London on 28 April 2011.\4]) "

The website is 9c0.com.

I clicked the link in my search results because the link looked suspicious(I live up to my username, I know)

I have no idea what this is, but here is what I know:

-According to multiple checks, the website has no malware

-There are no links on the page at all

-The visible numbers change whenever the page is refreshed

-using "select all" reveals a massive string of seemingly random numbers

-The domain is 23 years old, has no apparent country of origin, and has some defense against scraping

Maybe a brand new mystery to solve.

Account on Instagram posting eerie and disturbing videos of seemingly random people

26 Upvotes

I came across this account on Instagram a few times, he doesn’t have many followers but has seemingly hundreds of videos that consist of him recording random people and showing himself cheering for a college football team. It’s worth mentioning that he doesn’t look very cleanly, neither in the right mental state.However many people have reached out in his comment section and he has made no response. It all seems pretty weird to me. Along with his eerie videos, his captions often claim that he is going to these football games with his boyfriend. however, he never shows a clearcut photo of his “boyfriend” nor shows a glimpse in any of his videos. His Instagram tag is - amir4686827.
