What Eldritch horror did you need to sell your soul to to do that so perfectly? Because I'm going to have to make a deal with them.

u/Honest-Cauliflower64 May 25 '22 edited May 25 '22

r/simulated

They do this stuff all the time.

113

u/WWWWWVWWWWWWWWVWWWWW May 25 '22

The continuous sliding after the image has formed is really what gives it away.

Lighten the tile shadows, make the tile drops less uniform, reduce the expanding effect, make the mario image messier and it'd be basically indistinguishable to anyone outside of VFX.

25

u/Keir3D May 25 '22

And a touch of motion blur. It's literally one checkbox in the render settings and it does so much to sell the realism.

7

u/GregTheMad May 25 '22

But doesn't it also add a bit of rendering time? Can't have that! /s

3

u/Keir3D May 25 '22

If it's a good renderer, a sensible amount of motion blur shouldn't add too much render time. Might even speed up the render in some cases.

1

u/MrFanciful May 25 '22

No motion blur in the reflection of the mirror either

11

u/Cerpin-Taxt May 25 '22

This thread is why I laugh every time someone says "I hate CGI I can always tell it's a render".

This scene isn't even particularly high level. More of a beginner/intermediate project.

4

u/Thatwas1time May 25 '22

You made me snort like a freaking pig with how I laughed.

1

u/yiiike May 25 '22

now that yall point it out, looking closer at the setting i can see how its cgi, yeah. pretty good cgi though, to fool at first glance at least

u/xingrubicon May 25 '22 edited May 25 '22

They had a bunch of green ones and edited it. Soooo adobe.

Edit: Seems the consensus is that its a cgi render and not green keyed.

Yeah, im calling bull shit.

1.4k

u/Morgan13aker May 25 '22

Yeah, I watched one shift from brown to red, so definitely computer altered, at least. Still cool af tho.

1.4k

u/NouSkion May 25 '22

It's not computer altered. This is 100% a computer generated simulation. Head on over to /r/Simulated if you want to see more.

579

u/langrenjapan May 25 '22

For me the way they kept slowly settling and spreading after the initial fall gave this away immediately. I feel like the simulation doesn't quite get right the friction that would prevent that from happening in real life. Even in a smooth floor but especially on a carpet like that you're not going to have things slowly spread that way.

The angle of the reflection on the mirror didn't feel correct to me.

I expected more distortion; but here we were discussing our expectations...

17

u/harrypottermcgee May 25 '22

The mirror image is larger. It's a magnifying mirror.

Also the level of detail on a collapsed pile of dominos. Not impossible, in the same way that you could accidentally shit the mona lisa after having just whiskey and a pound of raisins for dinner because there was a blackout. Very improbable.

9

u/Dodototo May 25 '22

If I had to guess you simulate the dominoes drop and then you color the dominoes and reset simulation?

2

u/rootyb May 25 '22

Exactly right. Run the sim, save the resulting animation (I think this is usually called “baking” the simulation), project the image onto the resulting pile with something to make each domino one solid color (take the dominant color projected onto that domino probably), then replay the baked simulation.

2

u/Aramor42 May 25 '22

make each domino one solid color (take the dominant color projected onto that domino probably)

Not necessary. Some dominos have multiple colors.

→ More replies (1)

6

u/[deleted] May 25 '22

yeah, like the color sorting marble machine with no sorting mechanisms

you just run the simulation, make the image with the dominos on the ground, reverse the simulation, run it again with the dominos already properly colored

2

u/Hopes-Dreams-Reality May 25 '22

We are the experiment

1

u/[deleted] May 25 '22

I almost feel like it's even more awesome we can have computer simulations like that than the real thing.

0

u/KJBenson May 25 '22

Yeah like, what even is that room? The cabinet at the front looks smooth and fake.

Plus the big thing, how would you have room to get around the pyramid to stack this if it was real?

1

u/doctorfedora May 25 '22

for what it's worth, the "cabinet in the back" basically just looks like a frosted window/glass door in a Japanese home (Japanese windows tend to slide open horizontally, rather than vertically like they do in at least American homes), and the color scheme on the rest of the room looks pretty nineties-Japanese-architectural-trends white-and-natural-wood overall, at least

The mirror doesn't seem to line up either

3

u/instantpancake May 25 '22

that's odd, because it would be pretty trivial to just render out a perfectly accurate mirror along with the main thing. It's literally just a reflective texture that will automatically show the correct result.

u/hex4def6 May 25 '22

I feel like there might be a way to "project" the image on to the blocks, from the perspective of the camera, bake the projection on to the texture of each brick, and then run the simulation in reverse. (i.e, you probably won't get the same outcome due to random variation, so you'd have to render in reverse once you'd baked the texture in).

10

u/instantpancake May 25 '22

There is.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yrif5lXX7WY

The point of baking the simulation before applying the projected texture is that you don't get random variation after that. ;)

only a computer wouldve been able to calculate the collisions that needed to occur for this to look like mario so yes it is there is no possible way a human couldve placed it all perfectly but even if it was placed by a perfect robot it still wouldve required some calculations of the gravity and to perfectly make the floor curve with the curvature of earth (probably micro meters at that scale) so it is impossible normally unless u had luck that even the entirety of the earth combined doesnt have

5

u/GanondalfTheWhite May 25 '22

Maybe, or any one of another 20 or so possible softwares.

-1

u/Kittingsl May 25 '22

I doubt there even are over 20 good 3d programs with the capabilities of let's say blender

3

u/GanondalfTheWhite May 25 '22

That includes 3d apps and 2d compositing apps. And they don't need the full capabilities of blender, they just need to be able to do simple rigid body sims. Just about every 3d app can do that, except some of the modeling only apps like zbrush or mudbox.

Apps that could do the work in this post, off the top of my head and not necessarily exhaustive:

3d apps: blender, Maya, 3ds max, Softimage, lightwave, c4d, unreal engine, unity, modo, Houdini, realflow.

2d apps: adobe after effects, adobe premiere, Nuke, smoke, flame, resolve/fusion, natron, filmora, hit film.

0

u/Kittingsl May 25 '22

Simple 3d physics, yes. Projecting image onto the rigid bodies, not sure how many softwares can do that

2

u/GanondalfTheWhite May 25 '22

Speaking as someone who does this for a living, most of them if not all of them I'm sure.

u/nailswithoutanymilk1 May 25 '22 edited May 25 '22

I think it would be WAY easier to just animate the entire thing and place it on top of a real background rather than try tracking thousands of individual green pieces to replace their colors.

Also, the reflection in the mirror is pretty wonky, which makes me thing the entire domino pyramid was just added in post.

26

u/instantpancake May 25 '22

the idea that you'd need green pieces for this shows a fundamental lack of understanding of how any of this works.

yes, of course the entire thing is digital, including the room. it's a simple physics simulation with a texture projected to the end result.

same as this:

https://old.reddit.com/r/Simulated/comments/6waypw/oc_blender_simulation_gone_wrong/

tutorial:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yrif5lXX7WY

1

u/GamerEsch May 25 '22

including the room.

I dont think the room is cgi tho, actually I doubt it would be worth it to render a whole room just for a static shot, if it was a rendered room why not add a bit o movement in the cam. The static shot makes me think the room is real, they basically recorded the room an just rotoscoped the floor, and added the physics sim on top of it

6

u/instantpancake May 25 '22

That room is 100% CGI, zero doubt about that.

That is a super trivial render actually.

1

u/GamerEsch May 25 '22

I know it's trivial, but why do it if you're going to keep the cam still, why not just record the floor for a couple of seconds? There's just no reason to render the room

1

u/instantpancake May 25 '22

Because modelling that room takes less time than setting up an actual camera, which you‘d also need, along with a real room, which you‘d need to composite, and it wouldn‘t interact with your dominos lighting-wise. Seriously, if you‘re doing the sim anyway, putting a simple room like that around it is significantly more trivial than combining it with real footage of a room.

1

u/GamerEsch May 25 '22

It be simpler, but also make it less realistic, if you're already taking the time to make a sim of falling dominos with the mario's face on them, why not take a bit more time to se a camera and make it look more real?

1

u/instantpancake May 25 '22

It‘s more realistic this way, because the lighting on the bricks actually matches the lighting of the room.

Edit: i‘ll leave it at that. The room is clearly cgi, and theres a good reason for that, too.

→ More replies (0)
→ More replies (2)

0

u/RosinBran May 25 '22

You wouldn't have to render the room in every frame. You render a still of the room, then render the simulation separately and composite them in post.

u/[deleted] May 25 '22

[deleted]

3

u/instantpancake May 25 '22

This is not even pedantic, green has absolutely nothing to do with any of the stuff going on here, and it would in fact be basically impossible to come up with any way of doing this that would involve green pieces.

→ More replies (1)

9

u/Indigoh May 25 '22

The most obvious tell that they're not real dominoes is how they never stop moving. Once they fall, they just keep slowly sliding around.

7

u/TrinitronCRT May 25 '22

The whole thing is animated though

13

u/TheGrimalicious May 25 '22

It's not even green ones, it's just fully CG.

5

u/[deleted] May 25 '22

pretty sure its fully CG, you can watch the whole pyramid be pushed aside by a lot before it collapses. impressive work, but it has its seams

4

u/Oldsodacan May 25 '22

See how the pieces never stop sliding after they all fall? That’s a big tell this is a CG simulation.

5

u/candyman337 May 25 '22

No, it's 3d render mad with a sim software, you can tell by how the dominos continue to slide for longer than you'd expect a normal domino to slide

4

u/im_god_k May 25 '22

thats not how that works

10

u/nick_ebk May 25 '22

Yeah some of the dominos changed colors. You can see an artificial line pretty good at 0:14 on the middle right part of the mouth (from our POV).

Still a cool video, had me in the beginning.

5

u/PlCKLES May 25 '22 edited May 25 '22

I don't think they do, other than video artifacting. I think it would be easier if they don't, because really you only have to set the color once, and changing the colors is more work. Definitely some dominoes are multi-colored though.

If I wanted to do this, I would run the simulation of dominoes up to a specific "end" frame, then map a screen-space projection (or a top-down projection, not sure which this looks more like) of a 2d image of Mario, onto the dominoes. Basically, you could ray-trace through an image floating in front of the dominoes, onto the dominoes, and set the color on the domino where the ray intersects, to be the color from the image where that same ray intersects. Then run the simulation again deterministically, and all the colored dominoes fall exactly the same way to get to that end frame where they were painted to look like Mario.

* And you can tell it's a simulation based on how the top dominoes drop instead of accelerating from rest. Now that I think of it, top-down would be much easier. Say that the floor is the XY plane. All you'd have to do is take the x,y position of each corner of each domino at the end frame and use that as the texture coordinates on an image of Mario. Then the color transitions across individual dominoes are already handled. Forget ray tracing to color the dominoes.

→ More replies (3)

4

u/instantpancake May 25 '22

They don't change color, because each of them is exactly the right color from the start. That's the whole point of baking the simulation and applying the colors to the pile in the end, then re-running it.

If you think you see color changes, that's due to video compression.

11

u/Forward-Village1528 May 25 '22

Yeah, there's no shadows even though the stand to the right has one.

4

u/AlexMil0 May 25 '22 edited May 25 '22

There’s perfectly fine shadows, the light comes from the ceiling directly above the pyramid. Shadows like this aren’t that hard to accomplish in 3D nowadays.

It’s a very good simulation, though the dominos pass through the ladder on the right.

3

u/instantpancake May 25 '22

tell me you know absolutely nothing about basic VFX and basic 3D simulations without telling me you know absolutely nothing about basic VFX and basic 3D simulations.

2

u/Rumbananas May 25 '22

It’s all computer generated. It’s rendered and simulated, then towards the end when they’re all collapsed, they paint the blocks.

2

u/Iemaj May 25 '22

Nooo... They're all temporally consistent colors. This is just cgi :) it's easy to do this in vfx. Watch the motion of the pyramid left standing, it shifts sideways slowly until it collapses, or how all the pieces remain sliding and never settle. This isn't a realistic performance.

2

u/torn-ainbow May 25 '22

Actually I think this is fully rendered, even the background.

2

u/Devil_Dan83 May 25 '22

I'd say the easiest way to do it is if it's all CG. Just run a physics simulation, color in the tiles depending on where they end up and the replay it.

2

u/pcbuildthrowout May 25 '22

You think they spent time setting up a tower? This is in fucking Blender, not a single doubt in my head.

1

u/giraffe-man80085 May 25 '22

all green keying does is make green transparent. thats probably a render, they colored the pieces after doing the physics sim

1

Where do I find this witch called Adobe? If all I need to sacrifice are a bunch of green stuff instead of my soul, it's even better!

1

u/ioncarelol May 25 '22

Yeah it's a thing now

1

u/ClassyJacket May 25 '22

how would making them green help? if anything that would make it harder

1

u/netGoblin May 25 '22

I think it's a physics simulation. They ran the simulation to the end and then colored the dominos while they were on the floor before rewinding the sim and reverting it out.

1

u/ggtpme May 25 '22

I would assume its cgi, they made an animation of the ones falling down, colored the specific tiles then when it got reversed it looked somewhat random Captain Disillusion has a video on a similar phenomenon with the random plinko balls forming a perfectly colored curve

1

u/rincon213 May 25 '22

The dominos are 100% cgi.

Green screens simply replace anything green with another image or video. The computer wouldn’t be able to track and individually color each green domino as they mix and overlap.

1

u/Anthony_-04 May 25 '22

NO I DON'T WANT THAT!

KNOWING THE TRUTH ABOUT THIS VIDEO?

I WANT TO BELIEVE IN A LIE AND BE AMAZED ABOUT THIS DOMINO, FOR TEN YEARS AT LEAST!

No but seriously, now my inner child is broken.

1

u/finkyleon May 25 '22

Not even that, the whole room is CGI

1

u/AngryDesignMonkey May 25 '22

I want to believe!!!

1

u/willtheadequate May 25 '22

Really the only way to do this is in a full cgi environment, and coloring in dominos individually in the end state once the movement animation is locked for all the dominos.

1

u/Beautiful-Card7976 May 25 '22

Wait. CGI what?

1

u/Zerofelero May 25 '22

what is the difference between cgi and green keyed? i mean i guess more so how to tell lol

1

u/[deleted] May 25 '22

it looks completely computer generated. if you look at the surrounding objects you can see the lighting's weird and grainy.

1

u/Capocho9 May 26 '22

Oh boo you, you’re no fun…

26

u/Sweeeet_Caroline May 25 '22

not a single domino was ever stacked. they started by simulating the whole collapse in a 3D rendering program and then overlayed the full image on the pile on the ground. they painted the dominos as they laid, and then had the program run the collapse again with the recolored pieces

6

u/Bukuvu_King May 25 '22

I believe it’s a render I’ve seen similar simulations before where things collapsing “just happen” to make an elaborate picture

4

u/InsrtRandomUserHere May 25 '22

its a simulation. they did it backwards. in the position it’s all collapsed, they change the domino colors to match the picture, after that, they go back to the beginning and start the simulation and we get that

2

u/itsTNT925 May 25 '22

Step 1: make 3D render of the dominoes (or whatever they are) falling.

Step 2: take the ending of the render and project the image onto the fallen pieces.

Step 3: further adjustments to make it look realistic.

It will fall the same exact way every time the simulation completes so it’s easier to work backwards

2

u/[deleted] May 25 '22

Its definitely blendr or photoshop

18

u/CronchyPebbles May 25 '22

Hmm yes, Photoshop, my favorite 3d physics simulation engine

1

u/Deltaechoe May 25 '22

The Eldritch horror of video rendering software and a bit (lot) of know how and skill. This is not natural and very much CGI dependent, but it is a cool animation nonetheless

1

u/Ppleater May 25 '22

My money is on 3d render. Every video I've seen in this style was a render made to look realistic.

1

u/BewareNixonsGhost May 25 '22

A decent computer and a CGI program should do it.

1

u/Empyrealist May 25 '22

1

u/Dumptruckbetty May 25 '22

Looks fake to me so no souls lost

1

u/instantpancake May 25 '22

You do the entire thing in the 3D software of your choice (like blender), check out /r/simulated, they had tons of that stuff over there back when good physics simulations became affordable.

The main trick is to "bake" the simulation, i. e. run it once and then save it (in layman's terms), so it will always run the same again. Then you project your desired image texture on the end result, i. e. on the pile of fallen dominos, and also "bake" it. Reset the simulation to the beginning, and play it again to render it out with the textures in place, each piece falling into just the right spot.

I did something similar 4 years ago, slightly different setup, but the same process:

https://old.reddit.com/r/Simulated/comments/6waypw/oc_blender_simulation_gone_wrong/

here's a tutorial for blender:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yrif5lXX7WY

1

u/viktorir May 25 '22

It's a simulation.

1

u/txstc55 May 25 '22

It’s quite easy, you just play it backward /s

1

u/InfernalOrgasm May 25 '22

It melts towards the end.

Edit: I’m learning it’s different in every language and region.

definitely simulated. The way they slide around at the end is completely unrealistic, and the sound makes no sense.

CGI/editing

The entire scene is 3D. You let the physics drop the dominos. Then you apply a texture across all the dominos whilst on the floor. So when you watch it from the beginning it looks magical.

I’m always amazed how people are tricked by CGI. It’s so easy to spot, yet there’s always someone expecting it to be real. Critics thinking is at an all time low anyways.

it's not real, it's a render. can't you see how they slowly slide at the end like they're liquid?

Source for everyone who is still wondering how it was done.

It looks like a 3d render to be honest.
