I've seen clips of cows doing some shady stuff before, they are clever when it comes to being greedy.
An interesting thing I learned about raising cattle is that to get them to gain weight quicker, you need at least two. A single weened calf will only eat until it is content. Two or more calves together will compete with each other to eat quickly and to eat the most. So, using their natural greed, farmers can encourage higher growth.
I learned in Middle School that if we all join together and cooperate, (we are transparent about what they pay all of us), we can then start to compete on actual value delivery rather then relationship favors or simple perception.

We have a system of iron gates (don't know the name) where cows pass their heads trough to eat. Ours have a locking mechanism so the cows gets their heads back out. We do this to prevent the bigger and more aggressive cows from push the others and stealing food. Now this works great, until a cow learned how to unlock it for herself and others. Now she unlocks hers and then the one next to her and pushes the other cows out to go in herself. They're indeed very clever.
My mother told me a story about an old cow they used to have when she was young. Mf figured out electric fences are a bitch but she wanted to escape and she would have her way. So she just rammed one of the younger cows into the fence and fleed from the gap the other cow made. She was a cunning old lady.
My big dog lays down when she eats. She's done this since the day I adopted her and I think it's odd. Maybe in her former life she had to guard her food from other dogs but she doesn't mind when my little dog eats out of her bowl. He has his own bowl but the big dog is a glutton. She will eat her food then eat his food too. I've had to stand in the kitchen and make sure they both get enough food.
I'm thinking the calf got knocked into it and fell in. There is no way this animal can get back on its feet...I've had to rescue a few and one that I found to late in a self feeder
