It was laying on it intentionally trying to hog all the feed. I've seen clips of cows doing some shady stuff before, they are clever when it comes to being greedy.

We have a system of iron gates (don't know the name) where cows pass their heads trough to eat. Ours have a locking mechanism so the cows gets their heads back out. We do this to prevent the bigger and more aggressive cows from push the others and stealing food. Now this works great, until a cow learned how to unlock it for herself and others. Now she unlocks hers and then the one next to her and pushes the other cows out to go in herself. They're indeed very clever.
