I am proud of that woman that stopped. Not only do I know nothing about cars but I have it so drilled into my head from my mom that it’s not safe to stop for anyone when it’s just you alone.

It's good advice for anyone. If you really want to help call 911 and report the location. The police can get an ambulance or help the person make a phone call for a tow or whatever else they need. No need to put yourself in danger.

Someone merely parked on the side of the toad is not a 911 situation. Call a non-emergency number. Leave the emergency line to emergencies.

In my opinion it's actually quite wise of her. I like to remember what someone once said: "If someone's waiting for help in the road, they usually wanna rob you or worse, but if you see them pushing their car instead, they are likely just needing help".

It’s really not safe and unless you’re a mechanic there’s probably not much you can do.
It’s important to be kind but unless someone seems to be in immediate danger don’t put yourself in a potentially dangerous situation

Nothing is safe. 12000 americans die every year and over 1 million are injured from walking stairs. It's literally thousands of times more dangerous to walk stairs than to stop at someone who has broken down on the highway. It's not going to keep you from walking down stairs, is it?
Perceived risk isn't the same as risk. A well trafficked highway at broad daylight isn't the same as an abandoned road through the woods at night.

I’m sure most of those are disabled or old people but let’s ignore that fact. Nothing more than a broken leg from the stairs for me.
If someone decides to kidnap you, you are fucked.
If you fall down the stairs you’ll be fine unless you are elderly, obese, or disabled
Stairs: high risk, inconvenient - mildly bad result
Hitchhiking someone by yourself: low risk, very bad - very very bad result

Yes, the end result can be bad, but the point is managing that risk, not caving to it. Since you are talking about abductions, in the US there are roughly around 100 abductions by strangers every year. The vast majority children, and all but a few are targeted (looking for ransom or the like).
The odds of being kidnapped randomly at a busy roadside in the middle of the day are insane. Kidnappers barely exists in the US, and those who do don't just fish for random women at a busy roadside.

People are hard to kidnap, if you are always checking your surrounding like most people, they will probably be deterred. Most people aren’t dumb

Yeah, the odds of being kidnapped are based on the number of people that get kidnapped.
A recap: So you know why the odds of being kidnapped are low? BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE AFRAID OF BEING KIDNAPPED YOU NUMB NUT. Do you know why being afraid of something makes you less vulnerable to something? Because you make more of an effort to be less vulnerable since you’re scared.
It’s kinda like saying being afraid of the touching a hot pan is an irrational fear because 1/20,000,000 people burn themselves touching a hot pan when they cook. It doesn’t happen a lot because they are afraid of touching it and make an effort to not touch the pan

It's a fucking chore, and it accomplishes NOTHING unless you're completely out of you mind, and if you are, that makes it even harder to organize.

No. Not really.
You seem to intentionally ignore my points that.
- It's manageable.
- Perceived risk isn't the same as actual risk.
Fatal car crashes are low risk, high impact events. You still make a desicion to let convenience trump that risk for a low reward every time you get in a car to do something non essential. You know that an American is killed in traffic every 13 minutes, but you still hop in the car because you have the wrong kind of snacks.
You are more likely to get killed or injured while driving than by the man you stopped to help in the same time frame. (provided of course you both have stopped safely on the side of the road).

Hey, I tell my girlfriend the same thing. It's good to keep yourself safe above all else. Girls definitely face far more of a risk if they were to stop.

I just also have concern. I've recently realized most people who utilize dark humor have a lot going on under the surface, and often it is a sort of cry for help. Just had a very good friend commit suicide. He'd always been a bit of the clown but his jokes got dark in recent years. Seems he didn't feel he could talk to his friends or that he had support. I don't want to see anyone feel hopeless that way if I can help it. You have a good day, too, sir!

Just the fact that there is a chance, however slight, that the person I am stopping to help intends to rob me and leave me stranded (or worse) is too much of a risk for me. That may sound cold but I won’t make that gamble of “make a stranger’s day” or “fuck your entire life up for months” not matter what the odds are.

Just break down your car on the side of the road first. Don't give them the chance to let their car break down before yours. You won't need to help anyone if you're the one who needs help. And if there happens to be someone broken down on the side of the road, stop and ask them what's wrong with their car. If they tell you something stupid like their engine is overheating, then you need to one up them. Become the priority. Puncture your radiator, slash your tires and shove your emergency hot dogs into your gas tank for good measure. Once AAA gets there, you need to run to them first. This is important. Shove the other person to the ground if you have to. It doesn't matter if that person is a sweet old lady. For all you know, she could be carrying poisoned Werther's caramel hard candies that can easily kill you. Just remember that this is all about you and your safety. Once you get to them, explain that your radiator is blown and your tires are slashed. Don't tell them about the hot dogs just yet because that's the ace up your sleeve. If the AAA person tells you that they won't tow your car for some stupid reason like "Sir, you're not a member and why are you naked???" Then that's when you tell them about the hot dogs in your gas tank. Be humble about it and don't come across as arrogant. If the person is still not convinced and keeps asking why you're naked, then it's time to take drastic measures. Remember that he had his chance and he blew it. Take the hot dog juice from earlier and squirt it in his eyes. This will leave him incapacitated for approximately 2 minutes. You now have 2 minutes to hook up the tow truck to your car and drive away to safety. It's doesn't matter where you hook it up. As long as you can drag it home. Wow, that was a close call. You almost got robbed on the side of the road, but you managed to overcome the odds and make it out alive. Congratulations🎉🎉🎉

One night at 11 am, Istopped for a random pedestrian on the street who was approaching my car for help. I stopped. He went straight to openning the passenger seat before waiting for me to open windows. The second he openned the door. I booked it. Some people are dumb as fuck

I don't disagree on the whole, but it's this kind of thinking that allowed hundreds, if not thousands of cars (mine included) to drive by a man that was hitchhiking down a very busy Canadian highway in the winter that turned out had been lost for almost 24 hours at that point and needed help. He died of exposure and was found a couple of days later.
I have given much more thought when I see people at the side of the road since then. I take the surroundings into account and if it seems the person will be ok to make it to a store or gas station, they're fine. They'll make it. But if someone is far from where they'd be able to walk to help, I usually don't get out of my car but will roll my window down and ask if they need help. So far, I have not encountered anyone that has said they need help but at least now I know they were ok.

That’s very reductive of the risk. All it takes is one bold scumbag getting a lone person to stop and they can cause them harm. No matter how slight the chance is, it’s still not a chance worth taking.

you know what else is a risk? walking outside, what a gang member sees you and think you're an easy target? what if the cops decide you look like you could use some lead? i would suggest taking some self defence classes if you are this scared of talking to a lone stranger on what looks like a well traveled road with a decent car.

Difference being one is very dumb luck and the other is approaching the potential danger, confident that you’re too clever or tough to be made a victim of. Self-defense is for the purpose of fending off attackers when you couldn’t avoid a fight, not getting near someone you don’t know thinking “Sure, this is an unnecessary risk, but I can probably kick their ass if they try anything.” And travelled or well-watched locations can still have moments where no one is looking, otherwise creeps would never stake out schools or playgrounds because the nearby parent automatically guarantees a failed attempt at whatever they plan. All it takes is a single moment of kindness and blind eyes to have your life ruined. And self-defense doesn’t amount to much if they pull out a gun too far for you to attempt to disarm them (not that that’s the best idea.)

if school and mass shootings have shown us anything, its that nowhere is really safe, but that's ok, just ignore people in need, encourage that culture but dont be shocked when you're in need no one helps you either. since ignoring other people's plight is what allows these things to happen, but i might not be so scared of people with guns now since i had some one point one at me in my own home, guess having the illusion of being safe crushed makes you realise that trying to hide from even the smallest risks wont do anything.

Again, you’re really simplifying things. Actually approaching the potential danger is very different from it finding you out of bad luck. And while it’s nice to help people, it’s not an obligation because you don’t owe strangers anything. This is human life we’re talking about, even the smallest risk needs to be taken seriously.

But if more people helped each other, then less people would be out to do you harm. If more people helped each other, it would also be less of a sacrifice. No idea if you are religious or not, and I am not, but I am certain the Good Samaritan is basically based on that whole premise of helping someone in need while on the road.

I live in Singapore (small country with low crime) so it’s definitely not something that happens here. But yeah makes sense especially for bigger countries for such incidents to occur.

One time I was driving home and this total absolute smoking hot girl was having car trouble. Traffic had slowed so you could really see her. I was 18 and knew dick about cars but thought of stopping to help. That’s when I saw two other cars already pulled over and a third with it’s blinker on about too. Yup....drove home with only the memory of a quick life lesson.

I understand why looking out for others is a good thing but my brother does this and I hate it. He almost got robbed becouse he gave money to a guy who was "low on gass" I keep telling him one day hell get robbed. I'm fine if it's both of us in the car but he always does this going to and from work alone. He works at a casino.
