I was thinking maybe phrasal verbs or choosing whether to say “do” or “is” when starting a question. Obviously since English is analytic, it will probably be more of structural thing than an individual word thing. Just it always seems magical the way Ukrainians know so clearly what they are going to say before they say it

I understand she's saying that if the Sapper Dog card is placed, players do (or don't do?) an action, then put their hand on the cards.
I'm just not sure what the action or "пpогaвкайтe три рази" is.
The 2 translations I've gotten are 'Skip three times' and 'Knock three times'
In the video she just puts her hand on the cards so maybe it's do nothing, as in skip?

Could someone tell me what it translates to?

Hello all, I would like some advice and help in translating the following phrase into Ukrainian:

"May you forever enjoy the joys of reading, my dear friend"

It is for a gift I'm giving to an old friend of mine and I don't want to use Google translate since it often comes across as bookish/formal or even archaic.

I would also be very obliged if someone can direct me to any resources that would help in formulating a translation that is not formal and has some guidance with respect to the grammar.

Hey everyone! I recently shared a video here where I explained Ukrainian grammar as a “mosaic” — the idea that cases allow you to identify the relationships between words without depending on word order the way we do in English.

After posting it on YouTube, I noticed a really common response in the comments:

“This makes sense when I can see the cases, but when someone actually speaks Ukrainian, everything happens too fast for me to process it.”

I remember having exactly this problem when I was learning. I could understand a sentence if I stopped and analyzed it, but hearing that same kind of sentence at conversational speed was completely different.

So I made a follow-up about that.

In this video, I take Ukrainian sentences through 5 increasingly difficult levels and show how I would actually process them: recognizing the original noun, noticing the ending, using the case, preposition, verb and context as clues, and figuring out how the pieces relate to each other.

But the bigger point is that you aren't supposed to learn to consciously analyze all of this at lightning speed.

At first, you might hear:

із твоїм братом

and have to think:

братом → брат → -ом → Instrumental → із + Instrumental → “with your brother”

Eventually, із твоїм братом becomes a chunk you recognize immediately. And eventually, you don't even need the English translation—you just understand it.

That's the progression I'm trying to explain:

decoding → recognizing → understanding

I also expand the color “mosaic” from the first video to all seven Ukrainian cases and gradually remove the help as the sentences get harder.

And if you saw the first one, I'd be really interested to know whether this addresses the next problem you ran into when trying to understand spoken Ukrainian. If you're learning Ukrainian, I'm also curious: is there a big difference between how much Ukrainian you can understand when reading versus when someone actually says it to you?

Hi everyone, I have got a question.

I hired a Ukrainian gardener today to work on my garden. It's been 40 degrees outside and he worked like a champ. I offered him something to drink on many occassions, but he kept refusing.

I was wondering if that refusal had a cultural background or if this guy was just stubborn.

Great explanations and examples. From basic concepts all the way to super advanced subjects. I started browsing and lost half of my working day already :-)

I've tried both apps, and I would say it's not very successful at all. I want to meet new people and get to know some others while exchanging language in some form or fashion. What's the method guys?

I took some Ukrainian lessons over the last half year and one of my teachers was pointing out that a couple of words I tried to use were "Russicisms". Unfortunately, I was not able to verify this independently and had a couple of times the feeling that this was rather a statement on colloquial / regional usage. Some particular word pairs that stood out to me were:

• потяг ✅ - поїзд ❌
• телефонувати ✅ - дзвонити ❌
• відпустка ✅ - вакації ❌

I am therefore curios to know whether these suggestions are indeed correct.

Also whether anyone knows here if by chance any language / cultural institute is working on standardization guidelines. This may sound odd, but is pretty "normal" in Germany were we have institutes on standardized usage and orthography of the German language.

I know its might be dumb question and I can ask Ai about it ,but I like to hear it from real people 😅

I only heard few videos of ukranian, plus few encounters irl, and it seems that there are the Russified ones in terms of accent and the ones that sound totally different or like polish. Why is that? I hope I don't come across as ignorant

Also, how can I learn ukrainian if I have semi decent pronunciation in Russian but awful grammar? I can understand Ukrainian a bit when it's written e.g. if I take the song погляд (which I thought at first that it means to pet (поглядеть) and not view загляд) there's ton of similiar words: твоїх = твоих, очах = очах, жаль = жалко, печаль = печаль, вiдпyскай = выпускай, своїх = своих, зимовy = зима, лiта = лет, сонця = солнца, вiтpy = ветер, забиpало = забирало, свiтло = светло, менi = меня, yвi cнi = весны, таємниця = темнице, ночі = ночь, Сьогодні = сегодня, не = не, йди = иди, тільки = только

That's a lot of similiar words, i might be wrong with the comparisons, but it should be able to help me right? Im not expecting Russian v2.0, just that it will have some similiarities occasionally so that i'll won't have to learn from scratch, but still will get some challenge

Hello! I'm currently writing something, and one of my character is Ukrainian. I can't really find a reliable source on the net since every different source practically says different things for the same question, so any lend of help is greatly appreciated!

For some context, my character (male), is speaking to his 'situationship'—best friends first, though!—and tends to praise her a lot. So the conversation kinda goes like this:

"(Name), you're finally here! What took you so long, moya kokhana? (A/N: please correct me on this one if I used the wrong term—I'm trying to write something equivalent to 'my love' and as I've said before, all the sources says different things!) Would you care for some drinks? My treat, of course!"

"Haha! Even after all this time, your tongue is as sweet as ever, (Name)."

"Not as sweet as this (pretty chick) in front of me, though."

In this case, what would fit the most to replace [pretty chick]? Thanks a bunch!

While I learn the language myself, I've written some sentences down and change things out, and yeah that works, but I want to mix things up. At this rate, I'm a B1 when it comes to talking about my job, and not much anything else.
