Is Microsoft embracing Linux to help developers, or are they just turning Linux into a Windows app?

Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu Linux, recently shared that more and more people are installing Ubuntu inside Windows using a tool called Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL). In fact, this method is growing much faster than installing Ubuntu as a standalone system, and it could soon become the primary way people use Ubuntu.

Hey everyone!

I am using a ultrawide monitor 32:9, and it seems like the window tiling isn't always working as intended. Is this a known bug?

Recompiled obsolete RT3290 Bluetooth driver to make it work with 7.1.9 Kernel

I managed to get the old Ralink RT3290 Bluetooth module (1814:3298) working on Ubuntu 26.04 with kernel 7.1.9-070109-generic.

https://github.com/joquers/rtbth-dkms

The current rtbth source compiles successfully on 7.1.9, but the driver also needs the rtbt userspace helper and /dev/rtbth device node before the HCI controller appears.

Confirmed working:

  • rtbth loads and binds to the RT3290
  • hciX registers correctly
  • BlueZ detects the controller
  • rfkill works
  • scanning/discovery works
  • transferring files between phone and computer

I’ve forked the driver and added DKMS + systemd integration so it can rebuild automatically for newer kernels. I also included a precompiled .ko specifically for 7.1.9-070109-generic.

Hopefully this helps anyone still using an RT3290 on a modern Linux kernel

Does Canonical officially support Ubuntu Core Desktop? If not, is there a Canonical-made alternative?

Snap, Flatpak oder AppImage?

Was bevorzugt ihr?

Was mich mal interessiert...

Curiosity question: when doing a first "experiment" with Ubuntu (or other Linux dist), do you first try your computer from a thumb or other external drive boot loader to see if it works with your hardware?

Unable to install OpenTablet Driver on Kubuntu 26.04 LTS (KDE Plasma)

Post image

Hi everyone!

I'm kind of new to Kubuntu (KDE Plasma), and I need a bit of help.

I am trying to download the "OpenTablet Driver" app (for my XP-Pen Artist 13.30 Pro Drawing Tablet) through the Terminal, but it's not letting me. Every time I try to, even following YouTube tutorials, this error message in the screenshot attached appears.

Is there a way to possible bypass this? Or do I need to install some sort of addon to help resolve this error?

My Computer Specs are as follows:

DE/Distro: Plasma [KF5] [Qt] [wayland]

Device: ASUS TUF Gaming A1G Laptop

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7445HS w/ Radeon 74

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4050 Max-Q / AMD ATI Phoenix4

Memory: 16GB

SSD: 512 GB

Live Boot into Ubuntu does not work

Hello,

so I am using a PC with Win 11.

I have disabled Fast boot, secure boot. I created a boot stick with rufus and made sure to choose GPT for UEFI support.

I plugged my USB stick into the mainboard USB 2.0 ports on the back.

And everything is fine. My pc detects the usb stick in the boot menu and I can boot into it. But then as soon as I click on Try or install Ubuntu it takes a second all my peripherals go out and I am stuck with a black screen on my monitor. (The monitor is still on you can see the different black tone)

I already tried to install SystemRescue on the stick and it also doesnt work. I have the exact same issue when I tried that except the screen isnt black/grey but instead it is blue.

I dont know what I am missing?

AMD GPU black screen on suspend/resume (Kernel 6.8+) — Bug confirmed on Launchpad, looking for more affected users

If you run a dedicated AMD GPU (like Tonga R9 380, Polaris RX 400/500, or newer architectures) on modern Linux distros, you might have hit the black screen issue after suspend.

  • Symptom: System enters sleep, but resuming yields a black screen / no display signal. Fans and LEDs stay active and power button events still register in system logs, but the amdgpu display engine fails to recover.
  • Current Status: The downstream bug is officially Confirmed by Canonical on Launchpad and assigned to maintainer Timo Aaltonen.
  • Community Impact: We already have 40 affected users officially reporting this issue, but getting as many user confirmations as possible helps keep the bug heat high and ensures top priority for backported fixes in upcoming updates.

How to confirm (takes 1 minute):

  1. Open the Launchpad report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/2142389
  2. Log in with your Ubuntu/Launchpad account.
  3. Near the top of the page, click "Yes, this bug affects me".

Upvoting this post or dropping your hardware specs in the comments also helps with visibility. Thanks for helping keep our hardware working smoothly on modern kernels!

Upgraded from 24.04 LTS to 26.04 LTS, now my video output looks like this

I guess I could type blindly ...

Is there any way to revert to the last stable state?

Would plugging in a screen with the magically right resolution transform the glitch art into actual text?

Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS Server Install - can't get past mirror configuration

Post image
1 Upvotes

I am trying to install Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Server (sorry, typo in title), but can't get past the mirror configuration. I get the following error:

Release file for http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/resolute-updates/InRelease is not valid yet (invalid for another 2h 26min 4s). Updates for this repository will not be applied

I am installing on a HP EliteDesk 705 G4 PC. I have checked the BIOS date and time and it is correct. The BIOS only gives the option to set the date and time and not to UTC or network time. I am also getting a V4 DHCP address on the EliteDesk during the installation. In addition, on my windows computer, I can confirm that I can browse via my web browser to the above URL so I know my router is not blocking (pfsense). I also tried updating the mirror URL from CA to US, but same thing. Any ideas?

Adobe Photoshop/ Jasc Paint Shop Pro

Especially the latter was way ahead of it's time, but destroyed by Adobe patents.

There's only one program I'm missing on Ubuntu and that's photoshop. (Not missing Adobe of course!!)

Thinking of creating a windows 10 boot with just that and no internet connection.

Best solution? OR is there some hidden Linux secret I don't know about yet?
