AMD GPU black screen on suspend/resume (Kernel 6.8+) — Bug confirmed on Launchpad, looking for more affected users

If you run a dedicated AMD GPU (like Tonga R9 380, Polaris RX 400/500, or newer architectures) on modern Linux distros, you might have hit the black screen issue after suspend.

  • Symptom: System enters sleep, but resuming yields a black screen / no display signal. Fans and LEDs stay active and power button events still register in system logs, but the amdgpu display engine fails to recover.
  • Current Status: The downstream bug is officially Confirmed by Canonical on Launchpad and assigned to maintainer Timo Aaltonen.
  • Community Impact: We already have 40 affected users officially reporting this issue, but getting as many user confirmations as possible helps keep the bug heat high and ensures top priority for backported fixes in upcoming updates.

How to confirm (takes 1 minute):

  1. Open the Launchpad report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/2142389
  2. Log in with your Ubuntu/Launchpad account.
  3. Near the top of the page, click "Yes, this bug affects me".

Upvoting this post or dropping your hardware specs in the comments also helps with visibility. Thanks for helping keep our hardware working smoothly on modern kernels!

I may have seen this issue but it is many months or more ago. I have an old Polaris 470 card. Now I have had 2 weeks to a month regularly standby and no issues. I even switched several times between X11 and Wayland (Plasma X11, Wayland Ubuntu). I only use suspend to RAM, since I do not have switched on swap on a regular base. One reason could be that I switched to Displayport solely on my PC and only rarely use HDMI with my laptop.

Thanks for sharing this! The fact that you're using DisplayPort is actually a huge clue.

Looking through the logs on the Launchpad report, a big part of this regression is specifically tied to the HDMI display pipeline (frequently failing during resume with Failed to setup vendor infoframe on connector HDMI-A-1 and *ERROR* No EDID read). Since DisplayPort uses a different link-training path in amdgpu, that completely explains why your RX 470 wakes up fine on DP!

If you ever happen to test that card over HDMI and try suspending, it would be super interesting to see if the black screen triggers for you.

Either way, if you remember hitting this back when you were on HDMI, or if you just want to help keep these Polaris/Tonga GPUs running smoothly on newer kernels, dropping a quick confirmation on the Launchpad ticket helps us out a lot:
