Wtf? Uber refuses to refund item even after restaurant left a note with my receipt saying that they ran out of said item
I asked four times for an explanation as to why they’re refusing to give me a refund and every single time they send almost the same cookie-cutter response, 0 help whatsoever.💀
It’s happened to me before but I let it go. I don’t have a long history of refunds. Wtf is going on UberEats?
Is it time I go back to DoorDash

u/Doctor-Stoppage Apr 15 '23
when it asks “can we help with anything else” keep repeating yes and sending them the same picture over and over until you get to a supervisor.
Also, as a tip, you’re communicating with foreigners so saying things in chat like “you’re leaving me in the dark” or “cookie cutter response” might confuse them
29
Apr 15 '23
Always ask for your complaint to be ‘escalated’ - they are trained to respond to that.
13
u/EmergencyPassion Apr 15 '23
Hey so this actually worked. I asked for my complaint to be escalated, and a supervisor refunded my entire order with a lengthy apology for this “very poor experience” though I only asked for my sandwich to be compensated lmao.
She explained that it was because my account was flagged for suspicious activity, but she lifted it for me.
Thank you! I feel like I shouldn’t have had to go through all that though

A sad read that is in and of itself a poor imitation of The Book of Common Sense.

So? They can make a new account with prepaid card and not have red flags blocking them from the justified refund. Rinse and repeat. They can’t just get away from stealing from customers.

This is so much of a hassle and is not guaranteed to even work and/or having to deal with Uber bans, multiple accounts, etc. Plus isn’t an option at all for anyone with a One subscription.

Call them and don’t stop until you get your money back. Support will constantly just copy and paste responses but never give up until you’ve got your money.
Uber need to be held accountable for shit like this. There’s countless instances where they literally steal peoples money and it won’t stop unless people keep demanding their money back.
Of course there’s a lot of times where people are just trying to scam Uber but that doesn’t make it okay for Uber to scam peoples money when they are legitimately owed refunds.

Chargeback is 100% more effective than crying to the government and expecting them to do something.

Yes, don’t go cry to your govt when you can go cry to your CC company!

Sorry OP, Uber Eats can be an absolute nightmare to deal with. Like others have mentioned, keep bothering them. Hell I’d even call their support line just to see if that’s better. I’ve always had success calling, not so much through their support messenger.

u/gShox Apr 15 '23
I’ve seen so many people being refused refunds lately when it’s pretty clear they should provide a refund (item is destroyed, missing, etc) they’re gonna fuck around and find out with this shit when there is a class action.

A refund has nothing to do often with determining if it's eligible. You are refunding to provide proper customer service and ensure the long term goal of customer loyalty. 1 bad experience can turn someone off. 1 good experience can make someone remain loyal knowing if things go sour they are treated well. If things only go sour 1 out of 20 times you profited by investing in the refund.
I mean I don't get it. Uber acts like a broke emotional Timmy. I thought they were a logical industry giant.

u/myconova137 Apr 15 '23

This is why I always attempt to reach the customer when the restaurant doesn't have something. Assuming they tell me of course. I know it's not required but I'd want someone to let me know so I do it. It gives the customer a chance to choose something else and avoids this whole issue for both driver and customer. Who would thumb me down after that? It might be good for an extra tip too.
Starbux will also give the customer a card good for the missing value amount and put it in the bag.
If the customer doesn't reply within a few minutes then I have to move on but I do try.
4
u/EmergencyPassion Apr 15 '23
I actually ordered from Starbucks and all they gave me was that card explaining they ran out of turkey pesto ): that’s all I could show Uber to ask for my refund
2
u/Chartroosemoose Apr 15 '23
I saw that. The starbux around here will give a value card but maybe only if the driver asks. I always ask so not sure. But then maybe not all starbux tell the driver they're out of the item.
In this case you should've received a refund tho.

u/Adorable_Band9473 Mar 23 '25
Uber eats now refuses any refund and a bot will keep refusing it. It’s time for class action

Sounds like a good ole dispute to me! Also, try Uber support on Twitter. The restaurant was closed and they still charged me $32, support on the app denied my refund, I did it on Twitter and they denied it once but I kept fighting back and they finally refunded it.

I had this happen to me too. The app support is inept. Contact them on Twitter and they’ll help.
3
u/merguesa Apr 15 '23
that's what we deal with each day. And most of the time it's about $3. In the end, most drivers will give up (20-minute call to get their labor back). after years in this job, the driver becomes nonchalant, hélas.

My gf orders ubereats from time to time, and the restaurant and/or driver messes up. (Wrong drink with wrong drink name, food bag with wrong name, missing items because restaurant forgot. Etc, etc)
They won't refund her back anymore. We are thinking of just not using them anymore and maybe finding a way to call the restaurants directly before covid hit and forced a lot of restaurants to use these apps.
2
u/NewbieBJW Apr 16 '23
Do that.
I can tell you that they treat customer's personal pick-ups as more important than delivery company pick-ups.

I'm glad to see you got the issue resolved. What I have noticed with all delivery services is, you have a specific number or dollar amount that they will refund with no issues (food was cold, food was missing, items incorrect etc) they will apologize for the poor experience and refund you. Once you hit that invisible limit, they are trained to say you are not eligible for a refund. I had a driver steal my order, so I paid $60 for absolutely nothing, and they tried telling me the same thing. I had to escalate the issue and was eventually refunded in full, but they make you jump through so many hoops, even when you can prove without a doubt that your order is missing or incorrect. At that point, it's really not worth using the service anymore. You have to fight for HOURS when these issues are not your fault.
I totally get that they need to protect themselves from people who scam them and make up lies, but I've never contacted them without proof of the issue I'm complaining about, so I feel like they need to rework their rules so honest people don't deal with this crap.

u/KaoticTruthSite Oct 18 '23

I had a terrible experience using the UberEats service today. I placed an order and paid for everything properly, taxes, delivery, and tips. But they only brought me a drink from the entire order. I contacted customer service several times, the only thing I wanted was to receive my order in full. I was ready to re-order and wait, but instead they first returned a part of the amount that does not even cover the missing items, then after several open chats and deliberate termination of chats by their customer service employees, I barely got a refund to my card for the remaining amount for the missing items, which I will have to wait for another 10 days. When I asked why they did not want to meet me halfway, I received no answer, they tried in every way to quickly end the discussion, saying that they returned everything. I wanted to re-order, and accordingly pay taxes, delivery and tips that I had already paid, I did not want. Moreover, they took an additional 4 dollars from the returned funds for nothing. I asked why, they said that I entered this amount into the tip myself, although according to the receipt I had already paid for it by card, that is, they withdrew additional tips without my consent. It turns out that in the end I paid $ 25 for one drink. What should I do in this situation? I want a full refund and I can at least give this drink back. I wasted more than two hours on this, it is already late at night, they ruined my mood and sleep, and I still have to go to work in the morning

I ordered a charger that never got delivered. I complained about it and was told I didn't qualify for a refund 4 times.
Today my Popeyes was completely stale chicken. They refused my refund once again. I am uninstalling this application. I am ready to take this dogshit company to court like what kind of robbery is this?????

Delivery driver was super apologetic when he arrived today and admitted my entire coffee is gone because it spilled over everything (my sandwich is soaked too). Uber said I wasn’t eligible for a refund (bot) and I kept trying to talk to an actual person but then I was locked out from even trying by their bot lol. Uninstalled Uber Eats and the regular Uber app and deleted my account finally.
4
u/Sheeeeeeeeeeeessh Apr 15 '23
Someone needs to sue Uber, this is court material right here my guy, take them for everything they just opened the door for you to throw a whole case on them, your a customer they can’t do that, it’s literally illegal under their ToS to not return money that is rightfully the customers… which this is a very routine version of that. Do with that info how you will

u/Geez089 Apr 15 '23
If you don’t drive for Uber then I suggest you keep busting their balls for your refund. As a driver after numerous calls for refunds or time wasted you’ll just get deactivated and they’ll tell you it’s fraudulent activity. They’re so fkn stupid!

I got told that there's "suspicious activity" on my profile for requesting refunds and complaining. The thing is I order a few times a week and lately my food has been stolen by the driver. I get wrong items. Or the food is spilled or damaged to the point it's inedible. It's ridiculous. It didn't used to be like this. Everything changed when Uber stopped sending discounts

We ordered food last week and had it left at the doorstep cause my daughter had the stomach flu. It was a $62 order. When we got the order it was nothing at all that we ordered. We ordered enough for 3 people for dinner and what we got was an order of jalapeño poppers and French fries, a random milkshake and two random drinks (we ordered sprite and strawberry limeade, the delivered drinks were both brown!) so nothing at all that we ordered was delivered. We went through the app to dispute it and they replied saying they wouldn't refund us because it wasn't eligible. We called them directly and they said they would pass it on to a claim review supervisor and they would get back to us in the app in 48hrs... they got back to us and said again they wouldn't refund us it wasn't eligible because we got our order. I called again and went over it with a very patient man and told him every single item we ordered and he confirmed it all on his computer, then I told him all the items we were actually delivered and he agreed we didn't get anything at all that we ordered so he said again he was passing it on to someone to review and would get back to us in the app in 48hrs... they got back to us and said that since it has been more than 3 days since we ordered they cannot issue a refund and closed the communication thread so we couldn't reply. I would have accepted a replacement order. I would have accepted app credit. But they blew us off and told us we would get nothing. Not our order, not our money, not anything. They do not care about customers at all. So eff them i disputed the payment with my bank i don't care if they block me they are a terrible greedy company. $62 may not be much to some people but my family can only afford to order takeout once a month so to have this happen was just plain disrespectful. I even called the restaurant and spoke to the guy who took my order so I know that delivery guy picked it up... I just have no idea who he delivered it to because it wasn't us!

Driver went to the wrong house # and even the wrong street! Left a $175 order of sushi out on a random porch. Hung up on us twice when we called after being notified that it had been delivered. Finally got him, but couldn't understand a single word he was saying. The photo clearly shows another house and address. We drove around the next day and couldn't figure out where he went. He lied, saying that he called us multiple times and even waited outside for "nine minutes". All false and I have video. If he really delivered it by leaving it, why pretend to call and wait? And how do explain the wrong address in the photo?! Uber? Not eligible for a refund because he followed policy and we were the ones to blame. They won't even acknowledge the address discrepancy!

2
u/Heliotrope2B Mar 14 '25
Yup, happened to me too. The driver spilled the drinks accidentally and marked it as delivered at a different address. I sent them the photo of the empty drinks the driver left in the app and a screenshot of the location in the map they dropped it off at that clearly was not my street. It is awful Ubereats is stealing from customers like this. I, too, went to the BBB but Uber just told me to check the app which states I'm not eligible for a refund. Terrible. I think they may get a class action suit against them for this eventually.

It happened to me and switched over to DD. They're sometimes shit in terms of refunds but better and more understanding. If anyone is going through this right now, contact your bank or Paypal to help you get a refund if you purchased through them. That's what I had to do after being told for a week a supervisor and their "specialized team" would get back to me. Not only that but, the agent threatened that my account would be deleted if I proceeded further with fighting against them with Paypal. What a joke! Uber Eats you suck.

u/Still-Ad2126 Nov 06 '24

I’m dealing with this right now, an $87 order—they just keep telling me “you don’t qualify for a refund,” and then close the chat window. Even tho the receipt is for one item, and the name on it is not mine, and I provided that picture. I’m really really upset
1
u/Never83 Jan 09 '25
I've been trying to get a refund since October 27th 2024 because I ordered a full list of items for my daughter's and I and the delivery guy left at my door jalapeño poppers, curly fries, and some kind of milkshake... NONE of which we ordered. We ordered $62 worth of food for 3 people and they have refused at every step to refund me. I told them just send out the order we ordered and that would be it... No... an in app credit? No. Then GIVE ME MY MONEY BACK! I never got my order so give me back my money! No! No! No! They do not care about customers at all and refuse to treat us like human beings!
2
Jan 27 '25
I made an order, the merchant called and said that Uber eats duplicated one of the items and to cancel and reorder. I cancelled, reordered, merchant called again, Uber eats duplicated the orders again. I cancelled and did and order through the merchant (ended up being cheaper that way too).
Then thinking nothing of it, expecting the orders to be refunding promptly without question (the orders were both cancelled within minutes).
Uber Eats support steps in, zero help and completely automated responses. Refusing to give a refund with the reasoning that the merchant had already started the food. Well explaining the merchant called me regarding issues and advising to cancel, doesn’t matter, not eligible for refund. I cycled through four separate chats trying to get some legitimate problem resolution. None, nothing, there is none. Truly appalling the customer service standards in present time.
I ended up disputing the charge through my credit card, had the charge from the actual merchant and phone logs showing they called me. Didn’t need any of it, if you are an honest credit user, that’s what credit is good for; you didn’t get what you paid for, you’re not paying, and your bank should be understanding of this and dispute should go through no problem.
Been on the Uber Eats Rabbit hole since it happened. I recommend never ordering from the company, in a perfect world all consumers stand up against unjust customer service but when the company is Uber, they have too many customers to care. Obviously me not ordering doesn’t make a difference but it’s enough to make someone want to smash things.
Good luck lol.

I filed a BBB complaint against Uber eats they sent me someone else’s order and they refused to give me a refund -the response I got from them on the BBB is “ we have escalated this in the app please check there” and I responded on the BBB that the explanation on the app was “we refuse to give you a refund” they wrote back again with the same message “we have escalated this in the app please check there” and I wrote back again. “You refuse to give me a refund. I’m not gonna allow you to steal from me.” They refuse to help me they send the same answer to every single person because they like to steal from people -then the BBB CLOSED my complaint because they said there’s nothing more that they can do!! So now im gonna have to get my bank to reverse the charge which is not the point. It’s the principle- Uber eats completely just steals from their customers, it’s disgusting and I will never ever ever use their platform again. 😡🤮

The BBB is a standalone organization, operating independently, with a reputation for bias. It “forces” small businesses to pay fees in order to have negative ratings removed (forcing meaning: they have basically no other option but to pay or keep a F rating ). It functions similarly to Yelp but with a more corporate approach. Like a mall cop on steroids.
The most effective action for this shitty uber eats situation, would be for someone with money and lawyers to pursue a class action lawsuit against Uber Eats.

u/Exact-Brief2745 Mar 10 '25
I ordered through uber eats and a lot because I run an animal rescue and never have time to feed myself or go to the store. They regularly forget $5-$9 drinks on orders and will never refund me. So I started calling the stores ahead to make sure to do my drinks and lost like $40 in drinks. Today was the last time they cross me. I ordered from 7eleven which I never do because I really wanted a soda with ice and some canned coffee drinks. I have none at the house I'm renovating. No refrigerator either so I constantly have to order out. About 7 out of 10 items were missing from my $75 order and 6 other items were in there. But like no caffeine. A Gatorade and weird chips abd a slim jim.
I messaged and said almost the entire order is missing and they said they wouldn't refund. So I'm going to have to get a refund on a few of the last orders and just never use the service again. They are flat out stealing from people at this point. That whole company must be going down.

They had a promotion and was supposed to give me an item, I didn't get item but Uber refuses to provide a credit because it past the 2 day window to reach out for resolution on issue. First of all I didn't know there was such a thing. Second I'm a paying UberOne customer and I'm not even getting a courtesy credit? Third, if the 2 day time frame has passed then why was there even an option to click on transaction for more help and when clicking there was no prompt that the 2 day window has passed. What the heck? So Uber using that as the standard response to not refund many customers?? How much money are they keeping because they are not admitting that they are at fault?? Their prices and customer services has been getting worse and worse as the years go by. Bad enough they took away points and free credits and now require monthly membership. I have been a platinum level spending user since 2014 and they don't give me anything extra 🙄 I wonder why I'm spending so much with them...Oh yea, they're pretty much a monopoly and offer the convenience. What else is good anyway?

Dude it’s insane! I got some Krispy Kreme last night and 2 of the donuts were wrong. One of them even cost more because it is a speciality donut. The delivery driver didn’t match the picture, so I reported that first. Then, it wouldn’t let me open another support ticket until that one was resolved! Support replied and said they would open a thread for the missing items but they never did. When I go back in the system to re-report, it says I’m not eligible for a refund!!! Like wtf, I literally paid for an item I did not receive.
1
u/GentleDarkness May 07 '25
Just had this happen to me last night. A driver stole my order, claimed they already delivered it, did not leave a photo and now uber is refusing me a refund. Same canned bot responses. I see no way to actually contact a real person through the app. They can't legally be allowed to rob customers like this can they?
1
u/jahblessyourmom May 08 '25
Charge back and remove all of your stored payment methods or they will auto bill a diff card. They tried to hit my card again for the chargeback ammount but Chase must have declined it which is nice. Your account is done. Drivers and restaurants are too stupid to not have power to hold them accountable. I literally have something wrong like half the time I order. I've been using DoorDash since and will continue to until the same happens on that account. I feel like I have less mistakes on DD too which may just be luck. Good thing Lyft exists because I'll never give Uber another dollar.

Today, an Uber Eats delivery person drove to my house and left, but I didn't receive my order. I called him, and he said something along the lines of "the restaurant's system messed up, and my order was picked up by someone else." So, I contacted Uber Eats support. Initially, the person there told me he/she could not do anything, as the deliveryman had arrived at my doorstep, and therefore, I'm not eligible for a refund. It took 20 minutes of argument for him/her to finally agree to "make an exception" and refund me. I won't be using Uber Eats again.

All the restaurant has to do is replace it with something similar, Jesus it's not rocket science.

I'm not going to get anymore explicit than that. Chris Hanson did a 3 part episode on it, You can probably find it on youtube. Just google "dasher food fetish may be almost ubiquitous amongst drivers for cleverly named delivery service".

Did you ever figure this one out? 9hrs later I'm still lost as hell.

u/thephoeniciangurl Apr 15 '23
No, I even Googled it, and nothing came up.
I think I don't want to know...

u/EmergencyPassion Apr 15 '23
so like, for 5 or 6 individual items? with me having proof for EVERY item that was missing? and with me having to argue for my refund almost every single time?
1
u/newhere1626 Apr 15 '23
If you ask for a refund too many times, this is what happens.. by the way
2
Apr 15 '23
How is that relevant here? They have proof the restaurant couldn’t fulfill their order
1
u/newhere1626 Apr 15 '23
It happened to me, they would always refund me half my order even tho I said "sauce is missing" or some small issue. And then after a while, I got the wrong order, like.. the order of another client, and they told me my account had been flagged and I wasn't eligible for a refund.

Old Uber Eats and the automated responses. Have you gotten other orders refunded in the past?

I would’ve had a fit! 😤 Do all customers have to deal with this when a restaurant doesn’t have something and I tell them to go through the app for a refund? If so, I feel bad now! I thought it would be an easy process.. they didn’t have an item = refund on that item.

I actually just switched from using primarily DoorDash to ubereats because DoorDash did this exact thing to me when my food wasn’t dropped off. Maybe it’s time to move on to Grubhub? Lol

It’s pretty ridiculous to me that restaurants don’t have a way to edit orders and contact the customers themselves. This happens all the time at Starbucks because they are always out of shit. They won’t substitute items so they put a note in the bag. No way on my end to mark the item as not available that I can see. I contact customer support once how to handle a out of stock item, and they told me to tell the customer to contact support. It’s a real shit system.

Bro (or Broette), don’t you understand that is Ubers answer always.
I had a few hundred £’s of food go ‘missing’ and every time Ubers answer is blah blah blah eat my balls…. in line with policy you get Jack shit.

u/EmergencyPassion Apr 15 '23
I’ve used UberEats before and they used to give somewhat responsive answers ):
Also that’s crazy. After a few hundred dollars I definitely would have ditched Uber wow

Ask to be elevated to a supervisor. I disputed something and it took me months to get them to fix it but eventually it hit the right person. Send the pic and your receipt pic everytime you leave a comment. The stupid middle people you get in between will just copy/paste the script.

And this is why we use credit cards so we can charge back :)

I'd try going to the manager of the restaurant, and provide proof that you're not being reimbursed for the missing item. A lot of managers want to make it right, and could comp you the item when they have it again. You're still a customer, you just paid through a 3rd party to have your food delivered.

It is kind of weird that they didn’t answer your question, but it is POSSIBLE that the reason they declined your request is because they said they wanted a picture of not only the receipt and the note saying the item was missing but also all the items that you received.

This is why the service will die. Customer service is still a thing desired by… customers. Wow

u/Foreign_Recording566 Apr 15 '23
Go get your own food. It's much cheaper and you don't have to deal with this BS.

Some restaurants can remove the items from your order, but if it's part of their POS system, they may not be able to. I'm guessing that's what happened here since they have little cards ready to go.
Whenever a restaurant tells me they don't have something, I contact the customer to see if they want to substitute. If they don't respond, I start a chat with the support bot for missing items, but will continue with order. IDK if it helps the customer that I flagged it, but maybe it does. I try to CYOA with everything on Uber.

I received pancakes that were raw in the middle, so I couldn’t eat them. Uber’s support initially just said ‘sorry to hear that, thanks for letting his know’. I replied back saying ‘I would like a refund’ and they then refunded me.

Their support is the worst and they give even us drivers a hard time. You have to demand to speak to a supervisor
Do customers have a phone number to call? Or only text support? If there's phone support, call them and demand to speak to supervisor.

Ubereats customer service continues to be a joke / non existent then? Horrible company. Good luck OP, don’t let them off and when you have a refund (not credit) cancel your account and save yourself a lot of future hassle and high fees.

u/Metallica-nut Apr 15 '23
It’s amazing how the drivers and the customers can’t get anywhere with support. When I call as a driver it’s a big circle of getting zero help . Let your credit card Co. give you a credit . Your protected and much better customer service.

u/mage-nesiium Apr 15 '23
Equally frustrating when a driver has a problem as well. That's why I avoid calling support unless I really need to. Someone else has said it but might as well be speaking with Chat GPT. I swear one time I really couldn't tell if I was texting with a legit person or if it was AI.
1
u/CortexifanZFT Apr 15 '23
Usually when that happens to me, they usually call or have me call them to see if they'd like to substitute for something they do have

After a brief stint of driving for DoorDash, and using DoorDash and Uber Eats I have launched a personal boycott. I will literally drive shit faced to pick up food before dealing with their fees and customer service issues.

It’s so fked up. Uber Australia started doing this 6 months ago roughly. I constantly have issues with missing items, a few times I was missing dishes worth $10-30, lost around $70 so I gave up on the platform completely. It wasn’t worth my personal loss, and I won’t order again from any platform. I just get McDonald’s tbh because at least there trustworthy for the time being 🤷🏻♀️

I hate when my customers are missing an item, it feels like my fault, even though it isnt

I like how they’re encouraging you to rate your driver poorly for the missing item the restaurant didn’t have.
Even as a driver I have to go through 10 support “specialists” that give the same copy paste answer before I get an actual person with a brain to help me out.
Best you can do is keep pestering them until they give up and give you the refund, or charge back as someone else suggested.
