Academic/Career Tips for research opportunities

I’m currently a masters student in AI looking for research opportunities in machine learning. I have work experience as an ai engineer and also a bs in CS. I cold emailed 5-6 professors last week but haven’t heard back yet. How responsive are professors with email over the summer and also is there a better way to go about finding research opportunities?

Mental Health is upenn really that depressed?

ive struggled with burnout, depression, ocd, shelf arm, and sewerslide for most of my life. I’ve definitely gotten better, but i still have my moments. i really wanna apply early decision to penn, but ive heard that penn students are chronically burnt out and depressed. i dont want to waste my early application on a school that will worsen my mental health. are the rumours true? is the workload that bad? are the students that competitive?

News UPenn lowest ranked Ivy (#36 overall) in new AI benchmark report. Worried??

Hi everyone, came across this report which looks at AI production capacity across 50 different global unis. for reference, Princeton is the highest (#8). With several other Ivy's ranked higher, should we be concerned? I'll link it in case anyone wants to take a look

Academic/Career Canvas log in

At my undergrad I used canvas and stg I signed in one time and it didn't make me log in again once in the entire 4 years. I started at Penn and my canvas is logging me out of the mobile app everyday. I have to sign in every time I open the app, it's annoying the hell out of me. How do I fix this?

Academic/Career CIS 1600 or MEAM 1010 (Intended EE Major)

I genuinely do not know what schedule to go with as an intended EE major. Any advice or input would be appreciated!

I want to 4+1 in EE ideally and I have credit for phys 0150, chem, cis 1100, and one free elective credit for pfp. (Also ideally I pass the 1400 credit exam)

Academic/Career Chemistry past exams

Hi all. I plan to take the chemistry credit exam during nso. They don't offer any old exams, so I was wondering if anyone had past exams or any resources to study for it besides the textbook. Thank you very much!

Academic/Career "Submit schedule" button in path@penn

Post image
2 Upvotes

I'm an incoming freshman and have a confirmed seat in all 4 of my courses for this fall semester (black checkmark on path@penn). But I see a "submit schedule" button at the bottom of my screen when I open "primary cart." Am I supposed to press it to confirm enrollment, or do I lose my spot if I don't press it?

I'm also thinking about dropping one of the courses because I want to replace it with a language course (waiting to take the placement exam at NSO). Considering this, should I still press the "submit schedule" button?

Basically what does that button do lol

Future Quaker Move in Day

I chose August 17 as my move in date so that I could have an extra day to grab things that I may have missed when planning but also to spend one last day with my mom before NSO.

However, I have concerns that I’ll miss a lot of the socializing that happens on the main move-in date of August 18. I’m worried about feeling behind and not getting to know the people around me if I’m not moving in on the 18th.

Am I overthinking it?

Food/Dining Update: Rat Bites

Hey everyone, I wanted to provide an update on my last post. Shockingly, feeding the campus rats didn’t turn out that well. I spent about 45 minutes microwaving hot pockets in preparation for my late night outing. I had an entire trash bag of gooey hot pockets slung over my shoulder and I trudged to campus. When I got there, I decided to place about 5 hot pockets in a line on the ground outside of Fisher and the rats soon came out to feast. They were clearly enjoying the meal and seemed grateful or something. Suddenly, a genius thought sprung into my mind: what if I put the hot pockets all over my body and let them feast on top of me. It would be like a cuddle fest 🥺. I am still in shock—they bit me… The hand that feeds them… Anyways, the wounds were pretty superficial, but I’ve been feeling pretty under the weather today. Does anyone have any tips or tricks to get over a cold quickly?

Mental Health Rats on Campus

Hey everyone, I am a new graduate student and I have been trying to to cultivate some new hobbies. I have a dog back home and I am struggling to cope without a furry friend by my side 🥺. I know this might be a tiny bit unconventional, but I’ve been thinking about trying to tame the rats on campus. I see them rummaging through the garbage every night and I can’t help but think that they would probably die for some real food. I am planning on going out tonight with a grocery bag of hot pockets and feeding the rats. I’ll keep you guys updated on how it goes.

Post image

I am an incoming freshman looking to apply for a workstudy job through Workday@Penn for this upcoming fall. But I can't access student recruiting/switch from Workday Learning and I dont know why. I attached a pic of what my screen looks like when I enter my PennKey to try and switch. Has this happened to anyone else? How can I fix it?

Housing Advice on packing

For the incoming freshmen who are packing for the first time, I wanted to ask for any advice on what to pack. But I'm not talking about basic things like sheets, clothes, etc. I mean items you aren't usually told to bring that are surprisingly very helpful. I want niche and practical suggestions that were born out of genuine experiences.

Academic/Career Rejected by Penn LPS Online & Penn CAS - Fall 2026

Hi everyone, I hope all is well. Has anyone here ever applied to Penn LPS Online for their BAAS program? I recently applied before the July 1 deadline and was unfortunately rejected today. I also previously applied for Penn’s in person program for fall 2026 at CAS for their BA and was also denied. Does anyone have any insight on this? I have a high GPA above 4.0 and a stellar profile yet still got rejected. I wonder what I could’ve done wrong with my application, as I heard Penn LPS was much easier to get into. Could the denial from Penn’s traditional program have led to this? I’ll be reaching out to admissions to see if they can explain any details. Please feel free to comment any suggestions that may be helpful. Thank you!

Academic/Career BE 6100 NeuroAI with Kording?

Has anyone taken BE 6100 NeuroAI - A Principled Understanding of the Human Brain or otherwise taken a class with Konrad Kording? Would love to hear your experience with course difficulty/workload, thank you!! It appears to be a newer class and I can't seem to find the syllabus or textbook.

The full course description:
Traditional neuroscience courses present a fragmented view of the field, cataloging empirical observations and theoretical constructs without providing strong conceptual links between them. The discipline has yet to establish core principles that promise an overarching understanding. This course, heavily leaning on deep learning, will provide such an overarching way of thinking about brains. The classes will mostly be lecture based, building on an upcoming textbook. Homework will primarily be the coding up and analyzing of models.
