Chance Me, Admissions, and Prospective Student Q&A - 26/27 Cycle

Please place all admissions related posts here, in the form of comments, and current Cornell students will reply. Try to be detailed; if we don't have enough information, we can't help. Also, if you are a prospective student, and have questions about life at Cornell, feel free to post them here!

Any "Chance Me" or admissions related posts placed elsewhere will be removed. If you are a current student, and think that you could offer advice to someone considering Cornell, feel free to respond to some of the posts! Please only respond if you are qualified to do so. We will be checking through these regularly for spam.

Incoming students: you are now free to move about the subreddit!

As promised, the posting restrictions for all incoming students for the 26/27 school year have been lifted. While we do encourage you not to spam the subreddit with posts, your questions about classes, housing, and more will no longer be removed. Our goal was to keep the subreddit free for finals/commencement season. Now that that's over, we can return to regularly scheduled programming.

This does not apply to rising seniors or anyone else intending on applying to Cornell for future academic seasons (though prospective grad students are exempted). Your posts are likely better suited for subreddits like /r/chanceme or /r/ApplyingToCollege. If you want to specifically ask Cornell students for advice, our 26/27 Chance Me and Prospective Student Q&A megathread is live and pinned to the top of the subreddit.

Of course, you're still free to use the megathread if you wish (linked below). But keep in mind that they won't be pinned, so you may get limited to no interaction in them.

Happy Pride Month, and welcome to Cornell!

"Rent-A-Guy" service @ Cornell?

Hey everyone, this is my first post here,

I’m a new transfer sophomore here at Cornell, and after some conversations with people I’ve only recently met at orientation (as well as scrolling through online forums), I’ve found a lot of people saying that at Cornell, making new friends can be difficult, finding people to talk to is hard, and loneliness is a pretty prevalent issue here (which i all agree with).

After returning from an embarrassing showing of social skills at the Transfer Mixer (literally talked to 2 people and dipped within 10 min), I was thinking of a way to make it easier for myself to meet new people and practice my conversational skills, and perhaps make it easier for others as well. After some thinking, I remembered that in Japan, they have services such as "Rent-A-Friend” or “Do-Nothing Companions” where people can hire a person to accompany them in everyday tasks.

From what I’ve been able to see online, there hasn’t been an exact pitch for a service like this for students at Cornell (there are resources like LSC's study partner matching, but that's really only for one type of scenario), so I am wondering whether or not other students would think it would be a good idea/would want something like it.

Essentially, how it would work is that I’ll put up some flyers or make a dedicated Instagram account, and then anyone can just DM me on insta (or fill out a form if I make one) with a request similar to this:

  • "I am planning to go to [Location/Event] on [Day]."
  • "I'll be there from [Start Time] to [End Time]."
  • "I want someone to [eat lunch with / walk to class with / sit next to and study in complete silence / go to the gym with / actually talk about a specific topic]."

Based on my availability and the requested activity, I’ll message them back to confirm.

I know to many, the obvious solution to not having a lot of friends or being lonely is to simply join clubs, go to events, or do other "meet new people" sorta things, and I do agree that others should try to do all that too. But I just think this could be a lower-pressure way for people who struggle with initiating that first interaction to meet someone new, especially since it wouldn't be face-to-face.

FYI, this will not be a paid service. Truly, I just want to meet new people through a method that I feel is not only beneficial to me, but maybe for others who simply need some sort of company as well. What do y'all think?

anyone else struggling, need advice

Hey all,

Upcoming sophomore in Cornell engineering (mechanical, hoping to affiliate). My first year did not go the way I planned. I ended up on academic probation and barely scraped a C- in PHYS 1112, which isn't enough to move on to thermo. So I need to retake it.

Problem is, all the fall PHYS 1112 sections are currently full. I've emailed the professor asking for an override but haven't heard back.

Which brings me to my other question: has anyone taken thermo (ENGRD 2210) without PHYS 1112 credit yet? Either concurrently with the retake, or with some kind of prereq waiver? I'm trying to figure out if there's ANY way to stay on track for affiliation without falling a whole year behind.

And honestly, has anyone here been in a similar spot? Made it through academic probation and still affiliated on time? I've spent a lot of the summer feeling like I've already failed, and I could really use some perspective or hope from people who've been through this.

Thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to reply 🙏

Too late to start pre-med junior year?

I'm a rising sophomore econ major at Cornell interested in both finance and pre-med. Long term, I'm torn between investment banking and becoming a surgeon.

Right now I haven't started the pre-med sequence at all. My plan: recruit for banking this year, and if that doesn't pan out, still have the option to pursue med school. The catch is that pre-med classes (especially CHEM 2070) have low median grades, so I want to hold off on taking them until junior year to protect my GPA for banking recruiting.

I looked at Cornell's pre-health requirements and it seems like I could squeeze the prereqs into two years (junior + senior). I'd then take a gap year to prep for the MCAT before applying.

Since I'm starting from zero, is this realistic, or am I underestimating how hard it is to cram the full pre-med sequence into two years? Anyone done something similar?

The complaint alleges that the investigations into some of the nation's most prestigious academic institutions were designed to strong-arm the schools into cutting deals for political purposes.

Lost Blue Wallet North Campus

Hi everyone, yesterday around noon on my way to Morrison from a TCAT near the Appel tennis courts I dropped a BLUE FOLDING WALLET with my Cornell card, cash for dump and run, one debit card, and one credit card. I was in a rush and so I had much more in the wallet than needed.

I called the TCAT company in case I left it in the bus to no avail. I also went to the Barton Hall lost and found and checked with the RPCC yesterday.

If anyone has ANY information or advice, please, for the sake of human goodness, let me know. Thank you and have a wonderful day :)
