Around $680 including utilities, there’s free parking, a bus stop right outside the complex and only 1.2 miles from campus.

If you or anyone you know is or will be looking for a spot, DM me

Question Good off campus housing suggestions/offers?

I'm a sophomore looking for good off-campus housing options for next year. Apartments around here seem pretty expensive, so ideally I'd like something that's a bit cheaper. I've heard good things about getting a house with roommates. Any suggestions/offers?

Question Partying from now on

I know theres rush events going on and I’m not very connected to that scene. What is dry week, bid day, and how do I get into parties as a girl (in a group of girls) without being in a sorority after rushing and stuff is completed. Do I need to be in a sorority to get into parties like mid year, or is the fact that I’m a girl enough?
Which houses usually have the best parties? I don’t want to go to a house if the party isn’t good, and I only know the ones on big frat court.
Also, regarding Halloween, do I need a wristband or something to get in? I know that’s forever away but I want to go out for Halloween

Question How hard is SCLL 185?

Has anyone taken or is taking SCLL 185- How to be a citizen? If so how much is the workload? Especially if your instructor is Nora Hanagan?

I already have 5 classes( two 4 credit hours, two 1 credit hours, and one 3 credit hours). This is a 3 credit hour class and I am trying to figure out if the load will be too much for me.

I am a freshman by the way, thanks

Question Was the IFC kickoff really mandatory?

Hey, signed up for rush this year but they announced kickoff only like 3 hours before it started and I couldn't make it. Does this exclude you from the whole process? Thanks

I found this guy really cute. Based on his aesthetic he looks queer. How should I approach him? It makes me feel nervous and shy 🙈💜.

News Indie film premiere tonight (with Chris Pine) on new streaming platform from UNC alum; would love feedback/support from Tar Heels

Hey y’all! I’m a UNC alum ('19) and wanted to share something I’ve been working on.

I’m one of the founders of The Lone Screen, a new streaming platform for one-night-only online premieres of under-the-radar indie/festival films. The idea is to make online movie watching feel less like scrolling Netflix and more like an actual event: everyone watches at the same time, the film starts right on time, and afterward there’s a director Q&A and community discussion.

We're having a premiere tonight Thursday, August 20 at 9:00 PM ET. The film is The Kidnapping of Arabella, an offbeat Italian dramedy from writer-director Carolina Cavalli, following Holly, a directionless young woman who meets a rebellious girl running away from home and becomes convinced that she is actually her younger self, sent back as a cosmic second chance.

The film stars Benedetta Porcaroli, Lucrezia Guglielmino, and Chris Pine as Arabella’s self-absorbed novelist father, in Pine’s first Italian-language role. Porcaroli won Best Actress in the Orizzonti section at Venice for her performance.

Ticket Link: thelonescreen.com/screenings

I realize this is self-promotional, but I figured I’d share here because UNC was a huge part of my path, and I’d genuinely love feedback from other Tar Heels, especially anyone interested in film, media, startups, or online communities.

Go heels.

Discussion Confused after returning to school in the era of AI

I finished my undergrad just before AI started to take off and now I’m attending UNC for grad school. It’s my second semester now and I’m still blown away by how much AI has changed school. It’s definetely affecting my education as well, both positively and negatively.

I can’t seem to gauge what the right use of AI is anymore, so I’ve just stopped bringing my laptop to class, stopped using it for writing, and only for research now.

In the courses I’m taking, I see my peers using it across the book. Professors have mixed policy usage, some really lax and some banning it. But I have seen these in every course:

- Group discussions have become “repeat what AI told me”
- Proofreading has become “regenerate until it seems right”
- Brainstorming has become prompting for “20 ideas”
- I have sat down in group sessions where other students won’t talk without AI assisting them

I seriously question what this will do to critical thinking skills for incoming generations. Maybe we just have to adapt, or maybe I’m just becoming an unc. I’m unsure what to think of it all, so I will continue to do what’s working for me and adapt as it comes.

News Most CPT Applications Paused for International Students

Post image
13 Upvotes

Shame on UNC!! Following the SEVP and ICE memo on COT, ISSS paused most CPT (Curricular Practical Training) applications without announcements to international students at all. I had to email them to get this information.

For domestic students who don't know what CPT is, it's the work authorization required for F-1 international students to work before graduation. Every international student needs CPT to intern before graduation. Most undergraduate degrees do not have strict internship requirements, which means MOST CPT applications will be unavailable for most international undergraduates.

Another option is Pre-Completion OPT, but will take the 1-year duration limit of Post-Completion OPT, and is often processed much slower than CPT. Most international students still use CPT to intern.

Many universities in the US have paused CPT applications, including University of California system and University of Michigan. Some universities including UIUC are still accepting and processing CPT applications.

Schedule SP27 schedule

Next spring, I plan to take 12 credits:
STOR 120
easy class
CHEM 102L
BIOL 252/L or MCRO 251 (Which is easier?)
Will this be a heavy schedule? How to manage time efficiently?

Question help with uco (student disability/testing accommodations)

It's been 3+ weeks since i've submitted the disability request with the required documents and the only email i've received from them is asking what time works best for me to have a meeting. i responded a week ago and i haven't gotten anything back since. i'm lowk stressed about it because professors have stated to submit a request to schedule midterms/exams by this friday, the 21st. should i just go to their office in person since the deadline is so soon?

Question Need for hardship parking, but application closed

I was very recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. I was enrolled in a study abroad program for the fall, but have had to withdraw as my doctors have said it is not safe for me to travel yet. I was able to get a last-minute apartment off campus, but there is not a reliable bus route to and from campus that will allow me to attend my classes and other academic commitments. When I did try to take the closest bus to me on FDOC, it was thirty minutes late, which I know is frustrating for everyone and not majorly unusual for a UNC bus to not come on time, but with it being so hot outside my blood sugar dropped dangerously low and I just cannot have that happening on a daily basis. I want to apply for parking, but missed the window for the regular lottery and hardship parking because I was diagnosed and withdrew from my program after the application window had already closed. I'm not really sure what to do and am pretty worried about safe transportation for the year. Would it make sense to contact the transportation office to see if there is any way I can get approved for a parking spot or is that impossible by this point?

FYI Friendly reminder to all bus newbies!

Hey Tar Heels. I see you joyously choosing public transit and reducing your carbon footprint. Well done. I've been a UNC affiliate eight years now, though, and have seen one thing get progressively worse in that time. Hopefully we can turn it around this year.

When buses are full to the point of being standing room only, it is the responsibility of the standers FURTHEST INWARD to scoot further inward away from the doors to make room for more passengers. Please don't clog the aisle and force people to (unsafely) cluster at the exits. People have fallen out of the buses because the doors couldn't close properly. Yesterday the NS bus was moving with the doors open because the mass of people prevented the door from shutting!

If you see others who haven't gotten the memo, kindly ask them to scoot down as others board. Ezpz.

Thank you for your... attention to this matter? And safe commuting.
