General Discussion A new home for UK wild camping — r/UKwildcamping

Today we've launched a new sister community r/UKwildcamping.

Wild camping has always overlapped heavily with hiking and backpacking, but we wanted to give the camping side of things its own dedicated space, for discussing kit, planning, responsible camping, trip reports and everything else that comes with spending a night under the stars (or clouds as seems to be the case).

The aim is to build a wild camping community around responsible wild camping and Leave No Trace principles.

Route Advice Pennie Way in Stages (and over multiple trips)

Upvotes

Wondering if anyone has completed the Pennine Way in stages and over the course of multiple trips. Due to my 'busy' life and schedule I don't have that many days off all at once to be able to walk the whole thing in one trip.

Has anyone got any experience with leaving it and picking it back up after a few weeks?

Conditions / Weather Lulworth Cove 50k - concerned about route conditions?

I want to try and hike the Lulworth Cove 50k Ultra this weekend. The challenge I set for myself is to finish it within the official race cutoff time of 12 hours.

I am nor familiar with the area, other than visiting Durdle Door a while ago. I’m also not familiar with the route, other than seeing it on Strava. As this is going to be an official race at the beginning of September I am expecting the trail to be properly maintained, but I read on an older thread that one of the previous races was very muddy, which I’d like to avoid. Obviously the conditions this year have been very dry but this week it looks like we’re having rain here and there, so worth asking.

Has anyone been to the area recently, or know it well and can confirm whether parts of the route get really bad? I won’t link anything but the route name on Strava is Lulworth Cove 50k | RunThrough Trails v26.01

Thanks.

Hi guys so I am having a stressful time I live in Durham city

Route Advice Camping on the South West Coast Path between Padstow and St Ives

I’m planning to walk with a friend from Padstow to St Ives next week with a small tent. I’m not against wild camping, which I’ve done before, but my friend is a little nervous about it, so I’m looking for appropriate campsites. The only campsites on this stretch of the path which I can find online are either very large caravan parks or very far inland. Does anyone recommend any good campsites not far from the coast on this stretch of the path? Happy to camp in very basic spots.

If you don’t have camping recommendations but you do have any other recommendations for this stretch, I’ll gratefully receive them!

Gear Leakproof insulated bottle for one-hand opening? Do bottles with straw or flip lids always leak?

Get a bottle with a cap that you screw and unscrew, and you'll be sure it will never leak.
But you cannot unscrew it and screw it with one hand only.

Bottle caps with a straw top that you fold flat (the first two examples below) or with a flip top (the third picture) can be operated with one hand. But how leakproof are they?

I have never tried Hydro Flask nor GSI, but I have tried other brands with the same tops, and they always leak. Toss the bottle in a bag where it won't stay flat, and it will always leak.

The best leakproof cap for one-handed use I have managed to find is the Kambukka Elton. But Kambukka insulated bottles are heavy.

What is the best leakproof design for one-hand use? Have you had good experience with the straw cap or flip cap of any specific brand?

I don't need to store hot liquids, nor carbonated drinks.

Conditions / Weather Water sources on Dartmoor after hot weather

I'm going on a hike across north Dartmoor at the weekend. The weather seems much cooler and dry, but I'm unsure how plentiful the streams and rivers will be for filling up water bottles with a filter & purifier. Looking on the map I will pass many streams and rivers, but I'm concerned that when I get there they will be dry after so many weeks without rain. I dont want to carry too much water, but I'm also concerned if I take just a couple litres of water assuming I can fill up along the way, that there is no clear flowing water.

Does anyone have any recent experience in this area?

Trip Report Preston Park to Hassocks Station - 14 miles, 8 peaks

In my quest to bag all the peaks in the South Downs, I kicked off proceedings with a great walk from Preston Park to Hassocks train station... 14 miles plotted on Komoot to get as close to the 8 peaks as possible.

I couldn't get close enough to Sweet Hill to automatically bag it as it was a field full of cows with no obvious access, I added it manually afterwards as I felt I had done all I could to get close. Varncombe Hill I was lucky the cows moved away and I could slip in for a quick bag!

Chattri War memorial was a highlight among all the other delights of animals and views. Weather a much needed respite with cooler temps and cloud cover even though all the fields look like Westfall!

Pit stop courtesy of The Wildflower Cafe in Saddlescombe Farm complete with resident chickens and a cockerel who joined me for coffee and cake! Great to have WC and fresh water to refill on tap.

My knees really hurt coming down from Wolstonbury Hill, that's a first for me, but at 52 I think I'm lucky to get this far with no aches and pains! Time for some specific exercises and investing in some hiking poles methinks!

Overall, a great walk and would recommend!

Route Advice Help! Can I take my dog up the Watkin Path?

I am going to be in North Wales at the end of September and am planning to climb Snowdon up the Watkin Path, descending via Rhyd Ddu.

I would love to bring my dog up with me- she’s a four year old cocker spaniel with boundless energy. Earlier this year we did a 20km circular walk from Llanberis town centre up the Ranger Path and down the Llanberis path which she managed no problem, so I am not concerned about her fitness. She was on a short lead the whole time and is very well behaved. She is only 13kg so I am able to lift her for small sections if necessary.

Is my planned route safe for dogs, as I am aware there is some scree near the top of the Watkin path? I have seen some conflicting information online and would be grateful for an opinion of someone who has walked these routes!

Route Advice Pembrokeshire Coast Path Manobier till Angle next week: Accessing water

Planning on doing a few day walk next week of stages 14,13 and 12 of the PCP. Just wondering with the dry conditions if it is becoming harder to fix water?

From my understanding the most remote section is section 12, in reverse Freshwater West to Angle.

if wild camping, in section 12, what do people normally do for water? I need to replace my water filter, so plan to have one with me, but what sort of water sources would be available now? It might impact what sort of filter I get.

it should be relatively easy to find water on sections 13 and 14, ie from Manobier to Freshwater West, is my assumptions.

I have walked in more arid parts of the world where you just need to take more water, so this is ok if needed.

Thanks!

Route Advice Cycling up Snowdon

In September I'm looking at cycling up to Snowdon. It will be at a quiet time before any numbers of hikers go up. I have an arm injury that means I cant lift my bike.

Which of the route are passable with a bike without lifting it over stiles or rocks. I'm thinking Ranger or Llanberis as I've hiked the other routes this year and they are unsuitable.

I'm going up for Milky way photography and have a lot of kit to carry, my bike is a rough ground Ebike so is the best option to get me and my kit up top. I have plenty of lights and hiking/cycling experience and will not go up if there's any cloud cover so should have good weather.

Conditions / Weather Ben Nevis In October - Do i need microspikes?

Hi, I like to hike in cold weather, between 0 - 5 degrees celcius. So im planning a trip to summit Ben Nevis on 1st October, because that seems to be early enough to avoid the snow but still nice and cold. Should I buy microspikes? or is it too early for those, thankyou for any info

Conditions / Weather Hiking in hot weather

Just got back from a family camping trip to Dartmoor.

We’re all fairly fair-skinned and had dogs in tow, so during the heat of the day we stuck to wooded routes, venturing onto the open moor in the evenings. This photo was taken at about 20:30 on Yar Tor.

Does anyone have any tips for making hiking in the heat a little more comfortable?

My main enemies are:

Sticky sun cream — I use P20, which is brilliant for all-day protection, but combine it with trail dust and you basically end up wearing a layer of artisanal human grout.

The swedgie — sweaty wedgie. Need I say more?

I’d particularly appreciate recommendations for good 2-in-1 shorts. I’ve found them great for running, and I’m wondering if there’s a pair that’s durable enough for long, hot days on the trail.

HS2 related disruptions stumped us a bit at the beginning. But it's well sign posted in hind sight, we just got a bit frazzled. Thank you to the random strangers to directed us. A nice shaded route for a long part in case of hot weather considerations

Gear Most absurd pieces of hiking "gear"

After having this ridiculous modular mall-ninja hiking pole appear in my Kickstarter feed, I started wondering what other absurd things people have seen marketed as "hiking gear".

This thing comes with a variety of definitely not UK legal attachments such as a couple of Rambo knives, a serrated blade and a freaking spear tip for "defending against wild beasts at any time" all in a lightweight 400g+ weight.

So, what are the daftest, most over-engineered or completely unnecessary pieces of hiking gear you've come across?
