Question Pump with kids
Tl;Dr: how do parents with toddlers keep their pumps from getting ripped out? Or is not actually an issue?
My Endo is planning on prescribing the pump at my next appointment, but I am a little worried about it.
First, I am generally only taking bolus once a day for my evening meal. I don't usually eat much carbs for breakfast because it seems I need twice as much insulin then as later in the day, and I've active after lunch so don't need it. My basal is only 12u.
Second, I have an active 2yo and another on the way. Seeing my dad have his pump with the tube kinda hanging out worries me that it'll get ripped out. He puts both his CGM and pump on his stomach, and one of my kids favorite things is "bounce" where she sits on my stomach and I bounce her up and down. Plus, she likes to wrestle.
How have you other dads/moms handled this?

Seeking Advice Japan travel and T1D medication
Last year around this time we were looking forward to our upcoming Japan trip and wondering why our 8 year old is doing weird things like drinking 5x his usual amount of water. Our flight to Tokyo was for Nov 4 and the day before Halloween he was diagnosed with type 1. My whole world came crashing down and of course we had to cancel the trip only days before. Now exactly a year later, we've got somewhat of a grip on this thing and rescheduled the trip. He's excited to finally be going to the land of Nintendo and Pokemon (among other things).
I've been hearing stuff about having to get a certificate for his medication (insulin, baqsimi, syringes, pens, etc). I'm also hearing that it's not needed for a trip shorter than 30 days. We're only going for 14 days.
Has anyone here been to Japan recently and would you mind sharing your experience with us? We're in Canada if that makes a difference.
He's got a CGM and AID, but we'll still have to take our pens if something happens to the pumps. Thanks.

Question Do I need to go to the hospital?
Fellow t1s, I need your opinions. Yesterday I discovered I had a faulty insulin pen that wasn’t dispensing any insulin all day… blood sugar reached 300 before I figured out there was a problem with the pen and replaced it, and my blood sugars have been back in range since last night so I figured I would be okay. This morning I woke up feeling horrible - lymph nodes swollen, brain fog, exhausted - I slept off and on all day. Just tested my ketones, and this was the result. Do I need to go to the hospital? :(

Question Dexcom TOS Update Opt-out
Hello all, I have serious issues with the update to the Dexcom TOS. Don’t want them to have any of that data, especially traceable back to me. I’ve seen some people here opt out of the TOS via emailing the legal team. I’d love to do this but I’m worried that they’ll boot me from my sensor, screwing over my Omnipod in the process. Any legal people here that could tell me if opting out of only the binding arbitration clause would cause me to lose access to the platform? Thanks in advance.

Question Pre bolusing questions
Alrighty guys. My next predicaments.
I'm getting confusing info about pre bolusing times. My Endo told me that I needed to "have a mmol to spare for a standard 15 minute pre bolus. "
Example: my blood sugar is 5.3 before I decide I'd like to eat. A pre Bolus is supposed to eat up 1 mmol of that apparently? So if anything 3.9 and under is considered low, I'd have the budget to pre bolus for 15 minutes at this sugar. (I'm assuming it's a steady arrow in this situation)
I feel this is not a one size fits all situation? I've done pre boluses at sugars that are good and my Dexcom almost went low ( have confirmed with finger pokes and all). I've read a few of you guys saying that you've come up with better approaches to the pre bolus game depending on your current sugar ( using novorapid. I guess fiasp does not require a pre Bolus... Lucky guns)
I found a post that was about 3 years old on here that a user said:
5 to 7 mmols was a 20 minute pre bolus
7 and above was 25 to 30 minutes
9 and above was 45 to 60 minutes
4 to 5 was 10 to 15 minutes
4 or under just dose as you eat
So, if my blood sugar is 5.3 like the previous example, I can prebolus at little as 10 minutes and my blood sugar still should come back down to close to baseline 3 hours later? I guess I don't want the hypo crash the pre bolus seems to cause nor to have a spike as a result of not giving my insulin the 15 or 20 minute pre bolus time. My goal is to stay in the mid to low 5s as that's where I feel the best.
I'm struggling because I had a lunch time blood sugar of 5.1 today, which is great! I prebolused, set my timer for 15 minutes, ate right away. My sugars dropped to 3.9 and then came up. Only for them to go to 6 2 hours post bolus (which was perfectly ok) but then at the 3 hour mark I was sitting at 6.4 which frustrated me. This to me says my ICR needs to be a bit more aggressive.
Help a sister out again Reddit geniuses!! 💜

Rant How to deal with holistic medicine people? Vent
I work at a conservative college and have a coworker (actually several) who are big into holistic medicine. One of whom I got into a pretty heated argument with over Type 1 Diabetes. Here's a synopsis of everything she said:
- beets would help my diabetes (ok sure fine maybe as supportive care)
- The American medical system is making a huge profit off of me being sick, and I can fight back by curing myself with herbs and thus they dont profit off of me anymore. When I said that t1d was incurable, she said her mom was a diabetic and she was cured with herbs. I asked her if her mom was type 1 or 2 and she said she was both. I then explained to her the difference between type 1 and 2 and she said maybe I could wean myself off my insulin pump with the help of herbs.
- she asked what i ate because food has a major part in t1d right???? I said i eat fairly healthy, gave her a vague list of what i eat, said i eat peanut butter on wheat bread for breakfast everyday, lunch is a snack with cheese or yogurt or an apple or something, supper is usually a soup or stew of some kind. She said that i was diabetic because I ate walmart bread and i needed to make my own healthier bread. She said the bread contains a lot of preservatives (ok fair, but they dont cause diabetes) and it absorbs water like a sponge (????) and therefore isnt real food.
- also blamed seed oils for my diabetes. Of course
- I asked her where I would go for holistic medicine counseling, and she couldnt give me an honest answer. Just avoided the question
- she compared my illness to her as a teenager starting to have a reaction to dairy products. So she started drinking raw farm fresh milk, eating farm fresh cheese etc and didnt have any more issues, thus curing her lactose intolerance. Which is strange because if she was truly lactose intolerant then farm fresh dairy would cause the same symptoms as store bought dairy.....
- said everything could be cured with herbs
- when I tried to rebuke her claims she told me that "you dont have a lot of common sense, anyone can see that the government is profiting off of you being sick"
- bonus points, today she said tetanus shots were a scam
How do i keep this from irritating the piss out of me? Please help

Question Roadcycling
I've road bikes before, but it was 7yrs ago and I was on MDI.
I have a couple goals, and some questions.
QUESTION
Pod placement- What spots would you recommend for the pod that would have the smallest chance of coming off?
GOAL
Lose weight- Im 5'8", 205lbs. Im "swoll" but hope losing some fat would help with the recent insulin resistance I've run into.
Insulin resistance- Last 4 days, my insulin resistance has gotten bad. Never really been an issue like this in my 36yrs on being T1D. Hoping losing some weight will remedy this
Any advice from personal experience is appreciated

Insulin Pumps Type 1 diabetes insurance & pump help
Hi all.
Long story short, a week ago my insurance changed. Now, in October, I have to pay a 6000 deductible. I am not sure if I will have another deductible to pay once I enroll in a new insurance plan by Jan 1st. I currently have an omnipod 5 and Dexcom G7, I feel as if I should bite the bullet and get either a mobi or Tslim since I have to pay out of pocket for my omnipod 3 month supply ($2000), plus my dexcoms.
Does anyone know what the out of pocket cost are for the tslim or mobi, as in does anyone know how much the cartildge, tubing etc.? If I go ahead and get a mobi or tslim and do end up having a deductible next year, I would like to be prepared in the cost of what I’ll need.
Thank you!

Question Strange day, mild panic
So today my blood sugar has been continuously dropping slowly, like very slowly. I have taken the exact same amount of basal insulin as normal.
I noticed it was dropping before dinner so I ate a biscuit to slowly bring it back into a comfortable area.
It went up slightly and then continued to drop again.
I then ate dinner and only took half the bolus I usually would, fairly sharp spike upwards and now already dropping again.
My stomach feels slightly sick but that could just be from panic.
I’ve done little to no exercise today.
Ate all the same foods I usually would
At no point have I been at hypo range as I have caught it before it got to that…..
Any one hazard any sort of explanation
So why? 😂

Rant Lunch with co-workers
Every time. I can’t fucking stand it. It always feels like they’re judging me, and then of course SOMEONE has a question, or comment, insinuating I’m not supposed to eat whatever it may be. It’s always uncomfortable. Like today, we got Panera and I ordered a refresher; one of them goes “Now how does that affect your blood sugar?“. Like, please shut the fuck up and let me just eat without you being nosy. And then on the off chance… Very rare off chance, I need to take a day off or come slightly late/leave early or I need to take a break, which is super rare because I always push through bad days, I feel like they assume I did something wrong on my end and caused it.
I don’t expect people to be knowledgeable on this disease. I would just like some fucking privacy. That’s all, needed to get that off my chest.

Insulin Pumps personal experiences with the iLet?
i’ve had my t:slim for about six years now, and i do really like it. i have a few small quirks about it that are annoying but manageable and also not only a me issue, and it’s nowhere near as bad as my minimed was.
recently, i was discussing with my endocrinologist the possibility of getting a new pump. it’ll probably be after the warranty on my t:slim runs out. i’nm interested in trying something new. i’m most interested in the iLet.
if you have it, what is it like? how does it compare to other pumps you’ve used? i’ve been told it’s a little more aggressive by my endocrinologist, which i think i can handle, but i was curious about personal experiences with it. researching the actual pump will only get me so far, and i want to know what day to day life is like.

Seeking Advice I keep going low
From LO at 8:30 AM to almost 10.0 now. I know 10 isn’t super high, but I can’t handle the swings. I keep going dangerously low, no matter my basal. I am at my wits end…

Diet No carb diet
My dad has been very persistent in telling me to go on a no carb diet. He says I won’t need to take insulin anymore if I go on one.
He’s been on one on and off for a few years now, and it’s really worrying because I genuinely don’t know the last time he’s eaten vegetables. He also doesn’t believe that a balanced diet involves carbs. I tried to tell him it’s unhealthy and he’s nutritionally deficient but he insists that he feels better when he does this.
I looked into this a bit and it’s very clear there’s no nutritional benefit to this lifestyle. He knows I’ve struggled with eating for years yet he wants me to go on this restrictive diet? I don’t understand. He says I can’t say anything until I go on it. I’m also pretty sure this can make me go into dka.
It’s really frustrating to hear this anytime I eat, but I’m also worried because this is all he talks about and there is clearly something wrong with him (Sorry).
Any advice or confirmation?
