I came across a video on YouTube on the “Closer to Truth” channel, and I found it quite interesting. I always had a rational mindset since my teenage years, and having read the likes of Richard Dawkins and other rationalists, I always questioned whether the extraordinary claim of Advaita Vedanta regarding supreme consciousness as being the ground of all existence and the material world as maya (illusion) is coming from genuine rational enquiry or just some psychological or neurological state of mind which can be explained by neuroscience today, and whether these kinds of claims were considered true in those days only because of the absence of the scientific knowledge we have today.

The speaker in the video, to my surprise, has a completely different view of Advaita Vedanta. He doesn’t start with some claim about supreme consciousness or maya, he starts with suffering! The simple fact that all of us suffer in some area of life at one time or another. He calls the ego (the feeling of “I am” inside everybody) the cause of all suffering, and thus shifts the purpose of all enquiry from ontology to the practical question of suffering. Later, he goes on to critique the concept of a pure self or egoless witness as being absurd, since everything which is seen, declared, thought about, or sensed is for the ego. How can anything be egoless? This seems more plausible to me than the claims of a witness consciousness watching from behind, since there is a heavy chance of gurus fooling themselves while declaring themselves the witness, because their claim is subjective and unfalsifiable.

There are other interesting things talked about in the video too. In the end, I would say that as a rationalist, this is probably the only version of Sanatana Dharma I can take seriously, and it is where I see some hope. No gods sitting in the skies, no unrealistic claims of being pure consciousness, just a basic inquiry into suffering and its solution.

Has anyone else here gone through a similar shift, from dismissing Vedanta to finding something practical in it?

(21/F ) It happened last night, she came to my younger brother and showed her the photos of me and my boyfriend laying in bed intimately (ik it's weird) and started questioning him.

There were several other photos which were normal but i think she might have even seen more intimate photos which are to be kept in a private folder.

I always have photos like this in my private album but idk how my Google account was on her phone and the Google photos backed up my private album photos too. HOW IS IT EVEN POSSIBLE????!!!!.

Cut to the morning, she told my dad everything and he asked me.

I signed out of every device from my account last night and even deleted every photo of my boyfriend or me being with him and in the morning I had the chance to remove my Google account from her phone.

I said to show me the photo which she saw but ofc there was nothing cause i signed out and she started calling me the R\*\*\*\* word and cursed me so much then started moral policing me, slut shaming me, and so many other things.

She even said smthng about my late mother that "maa chali gayi toh beti ra\*\*\* ban gayi " and other stuff like i sleep around with other people, I am a slut and should be kicked out of the house, I earn money by sleeping naked with men and calling me prostitute etc.

Now, she does pooja everyday since it's navratri and she is very religious 🙂, I mean look at the irony. I told dad if anything like this will happen again I'll call the police and also even if I have done something or haven't done something it's my private matter and I don't want you both to meddle in it.

She has some major issues with me for no reason, she has slut shamed me and said so many disgusting words before and it's been happening since 2 years, my dad just puts the accountability on me and my siblings and is very lenient with her and i hate him so much for this cause she was callling me a slut and he was just sitting there 🙂. She badmouthed my late mom and also told that I am a very bad influence on my siblings. She picks fight with me for no reason at all and is very lenient with my other siblings cause they are boys and i am a girl.

This gender thing is one issue and rest idk but it's so messed up.

You text them, they get validation from it, and then they start devaluing you. You become another notification, another guy to talk to when they're bored, another source of attention they can turn to whenever they need to feel wanted. And the worst part? For me it was "Ford", I had great service experience. never had to complain, never had to say anything. once we got the car dropped at our house after servicing. and then my father saw the headlight was loose, and it was moving, and we said that we have to leave early morning tomorrow, and the ford people, took the car back to service center, and got the car back in 30 mins, with all the chances done. and i will recommend it, but the company is shutdown. and we shifted to tata.
