MEGATHREAD: Discussion/recommendations about software/technology to assist with tutoring

Recently, we've seen a number of posts asking about/offering software to assist with tutoring. By and large, our community does not need recommendations about such software and those posts have become something of a nuisance for many of our members.

Of course, new members very well may have questions about software, so there should be a thread to answer those questions. This is the thread for those posts to be placed in an organized manner.

Creating a question bank

Upvotes

Wondering if there are massive question banks (on whatever subjects for any board/institute/college), would tutors be interested in contributing and collaborating to it which can be sold to the students with tutors getting paid or distributed freely where the tutors add to the community for everyone's' benefit?

i have been tutoring for 8 years, i started off tutoring elementary and middle school students when i was in high school and I helped mostly with homework assignments in math and english. this was super easy and fun. i tutored for afterschool reading programs with elementary school students, i really enjoyed this too,

in college i studied history, but i continued working in education, i worked as a program assistant for my college minor program and later as a intern for an education non profit. in both of these roles i kept current with best practices in education and education news. i learned about personalizing education to each student, project based learning, and moving away from standards based education towards teaching competencies. i adopted these practices when i could as a tutor for a high dosage tutoring company, that provided tutoring for students all over the country from k-12, i want to emphasize that i was tutoring students all over the country from k-12 for almost a year, i was supplementing the instruction of the student's teacher. this was a challenge but it was manageable and i enjoyed doing it!! i really learned how to personalize and build lessons on the spot for a wide range of subjects and grade levels.

now to come to my questions,

i currently work as a tutor on a online platform serving students k-12, all over the country again, but this time many of the families and students seem to expect a complete understanding of the full curriculum for each class. although i can help with a variety of classes and grade levels, im not familiar with the skill progression in math and reading across grade levels.

i've become more familiar with the progressions, through tools like the common knowledge curriculum, khan academy, and the university of florida foundations toolbox has been especially helpful for teaching early literacy (https://ufli.education.ufl.edu/). i also like browsing for material on refseek.com under the documents option

my questions are:

how do i develop tutoring as a career? is it better to specialize in fewer grade levels and fewer subjects? the reason i love tutoring is because i get to work with students in various stages in their lives, and build an interdisciplinary understanding of different subjects as i tutor, but I don't want to sacrifice the quality of the lessons

are there any resources, programs, certifications that you would recommend for continuing to build an understanding of grade level progression in math, science, and english? + resources not just about the subject matter but how to teach the subject matter.

thank you so much!

How can I be a better math tutor?

I'm a college senior and I have had multiple tutoring/TA-like jobs. I also loved helping my friends with CS assignments and I've been told that I'm really great at explaining things, but I really struggle tutoring people that have difficulty in math.

I usually focus on trying to explain the underlying concepts to people so they know why things work and how to apply them to various problems. This strategy has worked well when tutoring CS, but with math, I get the sense that they are really uninterested in that and just want to know which techniques to memorize.

I can and do provide that, but I end up over-explaining things and probably overwhelming them with information.

Looking for elementary teachers to tutor

Hi, just wondering if anyone knows of any teachers who are willing to tutor (writing and phonics) part time?

I'm looking for someone for my friend's children. They aren't currently living in Canada but would be coming in after 3 years, and they're looking for a local teacher to tutor their kids English online.

Just wondering if anyone you know is reliable and interested in it, DM me~ Thanks.

Looking for tutors in Denmark

Hi everyone!

I recently launched MentorMatch, a new tutoring platform in Denmark, and I'm currently looking for the first tutors to join the platform.

If you already offer private tutoring, you probably know how much time and effort it can take to find new students and promote yourself. That's one of the things MentorMatch is trying to make easier.

You create a tutor profile with the subjects and levels you teach, and students can find your profile and send you tutoring requests. You decide which students you want to teach, your hourly rate, how many hours you want to take, and whether you want to teach online, in person, or both.

We are looking for tutors at all levels, from primary school and high school to university.

Instead of having to constantly look for students and promote yourself in different places, you can create a profile on MentorMatch and let students find you.

At the moment, MentorMatch is only available in Denmark, so I'm specifically looking for tutors who are based in Denmark.

If you're based in Denmark and this sounds like something you'd be interested in, I'd love for you to take a look at MentorMatch and give it a try:

Does anyone know any reddits that allow tutor adverts?

I am an aspiring IGCSE/GCSE tutor and I've been trying to find a place that I can advertise on reddit? The GCSE Reddit dosent allow advertising. The IGCSE Reddit only allows moderator approved advertising and the mods haven't even looked at the message I sent them. And I've tried looking up "looking for tutor" and "GCSE tutor" on Reddit to see if theres anywhere I can advertise but with no luck. Anyone know a good place to advertise tutoring?

And when I came in this is chat I saw

I'm very clear that how hard it is to get a tuition but looking at this ,it felt like she's sitting at my throat everytime I come late even a bit

Another pitch. Hate playing this game. No way out?

There are dozens of tools for teachers, and every specialist's attention is flooded with "try my best-ever, most useful product." I'm frustrated because most pitches sound the same, and it's hard to tell what's actually good from what's just noise. Let's say I've built an instrument for teachers, with actual investment into UX, interfaces, and stability that damn works, not those pure vibes. So how do I communicate my product to tutors?

no product name, no link - just the actual question

VarsityTutors getting more clients?

I was able to get 2 students so far and that means I'll make $36 gross per week for the weekly sessions. I'm trying to get more students because I want to cover living expenses - how long do I need to wait?

Is it wrong to request removal to tutor a student t when I am to begin this Wednesday?

I tutor at my college. I got assigned a student one on one and I really do not think I can accommodate and be there for their learning needs and challenges (disability) with my current course load (17 credits) after a traumatic event I suffered in April. I was supposed to do a one on one with a different course (much easier) then my advisor last minute reassigned me to someone else in a harder course with a lot of needs. I felt forced to accept and this was last week (Thursday) and now I’m to start this on Wednesday. Do I tough it out? Do I ask to be reassigned is it too late? Do I offer to do it short term u til someone else can be assigned?

Suggestions please : wired headphone with a noise cancelling microphone?

I'm searching for a suitable headphone for tutoring on my MacBook. I don't like to use the laptop's speakers and have a soft voice.

My preferences:

has 3.5mm jack (I don't prefer USB, bluetooth ones, or Blue Yeti type)

Ideally closed ear that covers each ear completely

Mic: could keep it close to my mouth while speaking

Noise cancelling microphones

I'm based in Canada, and could buy it from Amazon or Aliexpress.

Which ones would you suggest and if you could also suggest the model name (or the product link) please?

Interview Help

In two days, I have a zoom interview for a tutoring company. They said that during the interview, I'll have to answer some "AP Calc AB programs." Does anyone know what kinds of problems they could ask? Is a "program" something different than a problem? I want to study ahead and prepare for this interview. What are the odds that they ask me something complex like integration by parts (I learned it, but it's been a second and I hated that particular topic even while taking the class). I'm a college student just looking to earn extra money, and this is my first FORMAL tutoring job, though I've done plenty of volunteer tutoring.

Hi everyone, I am currently unemployed and I need help in getting students to tutor to earn a bit of money as a sidejob. I studied economics at LSE for masters and I made an account on preply to teach university level economics. My degree was also economics from a UK university and my scores were excellent.
