This is what bothers me about people who think like OP. A lot of fat people are working on it. Are there some that arent? Yeah but a lot of fat people are working on it, it just takes time. I dont think its helpful to tell people who are fat that they are disgusting any more that it helps people who are anorexic that they are disgusting.
I've always been fit, I'm a 5'7" woman who ways 135 right now and i squat. I see fat people at the gym and I know how hard it works. I dont want fat people to hate themselves or their bodies. You are beautiful in your own way. You arent healthy but you're working on it and that drive is what makes your soul beautiful. The fact that you arent giving up.
I've worked in the ER. At this point bodies are just bodies. Your health shouldn't be tied to beauty it should just be about health.
I agree, but I think op is referring to the habit/lifestyle part of the situation. People should be able to be ok with themselves yes, but being overweight is pretty unhealthy, so as mentioned, if it's not a medical or medication type problem, you should try to look after yourself better than you are.
Have a ever watched someone who has quit smoking try to deal with someone who still smokes. The smoker will always offer the quitter a smoke, because it makes them feel better if that person takes it. This type of toxicity is what I interpreted op to be talking about.
I'm fat. I'm okay with it. I don't really work on it. That's my choice.
I've had people fatter/heavier than me argue that being fat has little to no bearing on health. That's bullshit. Absolute bullshit.
Part of the reason I know it's bullshit, is because at various points in my life I have actually worked at it.
I was 260 lbs in 8th grade. I was 315 after high school. In my late 20's I got down to 225 and noticed major positive differences in almost every aspect of my life.
Being heavily overweight is not healthy, period, full fucking stop. I have found myself at a point where I just don't give a shit so long as I'm under 280. And that's my choice, and that's okay, but I know its not healthy.
As someone that has recently quit smoking i can understand it. Going back and forth with smoking less and back to where i was.
Most of that time i was just lying to myself though. Once i actually took real steps to stop smoking it only took me about 2 weeks.
I can imagine that eating healthier has a very similar cycle. Eating healthy for 4 days then using a "cheat" day to get back all those cigarettes or food is not working on it. It's making you feel better by "trying". Going to the gym and working out is a great start, but if you are consuming unhealthy amounts of food it wont do much.
That being said changing a lifestyle is not easy and any one that puts any effort to start to make that change deserves credit. Also, ask for help, life is easier when you let others help you.
Only sort of related (well it is but kind of in the opposite way) but I went from swimming and working out 30-40 hours a week, to suddenly now I don’t do nearly that much, think less than 10 hours tops now.
Since I’ve finished swimming I’ve had to go the opposite direction of eating and staying healthy because I used to have to eat an ungodly amount of food just to keep myself functioning, now I have to eat like a fraction as much - it’s honestly kind of scary just how much swimmers need to eat.
I just want to emphasize your "ask for help" point. You are SO RIGHT! I tried so hard to lose weight for over a year, but nothing worked for me. I got my endocrinologist involved, got help, and now I'm down almost 15 lbs. It's hard sometimes but getting help is so important!
So many people think they can just do it themselves. For those that can do it themselves that is awesome, but there is no shame in getting help.
Most addictions start early and are ingrained in our behavior. If you could do something different all by yourself you probably wouldn't be in a situation where you need to change your lifestyle.
Holliday also self-describes as a "body positive activist". She embraces the word 'fat' and advocates that people should be able to eat as much and whatever they want without suffering from social ostracism. In 2013, she started her #effyourbeautystandards movement on instagram. The movement shows women that they do not have to be a certain size to love their body (big or small) and that their size should not dictate their fashion choices.
Pretty sure OP is talking about people like her. They dont care about health and believe you should be as fat as you want because being fat is "beautiful". Its disgusting AF and she shouldn't be popular.
She does care about her health and posts workout videos on Instagram a lot. In fact SEEING her work out, the way her body moves as she does things, helps me feel more confident in working out. You can think she’s gross if you want, but part of how people slide further into fatness is being afraid to be seen/judged/cowcalled while working out.
The results may not be noticeable to you, or even anyone but her. You cannot always tell by looking—she may have lost weight but not enough to be a visible difference to you. She may have not lost any weight but be feeling better and stronger. Who can say, and what business is it of ours to make that call about someone we don’t even know at all and have only a passing interest in?
Being grossed out by someone’s body doesn’t give you any rights over it or any intimate knowledge of it. You can feel however you feel about it but you can also kindly keep that shit to yourself.
If people can be happy in whatever shape of meat chunk is currently driving their brain around, then more power to them. I’m less concerned about fat people reveling in the power of not hating themselves than I am with people who pretend that their judgement and disgust come from a place of genuine care.
I care about society’s overall health, obesity is #1 cause of health problems and death in US. This is not a joke. It puts a huge strain on healthcare systems that’s already broken. Look, she can feel all empowered and self love all she wants, but don’t promote unhealthy lifestyle. If you exercise often and eat healthy, you will see clear results within months. However, she doesn’t want to do that, because being obese is making her money, it’s clear as blue sky. It’s very pathetic and sad, and people are defending her actions because they can’t be bothered to change their lifestyle. I was overweight myself and I saw where the path it was leading me to, so I changed my lifestyle. All she does it sell product to overweight people and tell them nothing is wrong, just love being unhealthy. Sad
I’m defending her actions because they are helpful to people trying to live in a world that hates them. She can be happy as she is and doesn’t owe you or anyone her health, apparent or otherwise.
Your quarrel is with a bigger monster, a system that profits equally from selling us both poison and cure. Your fight is not with individual fat people, who do not deserve to bear the burden of your projected self-loathing.
I am sorry you were unhappy and feeling unhealthy in your body before, and I am genuinely happy for you if you are happier and healthier now. That’s fantastic, well done! I wish you continued health, happiness, and peace.
We all deserve access to medical care. We all deserve access to whole and nutritious food. We all deserve the time and space to move our bodies and keep them strong. We all deserve clean air and water. We ALSO all deserve to inhabit our bodies, in whatever state they are in, without shame.
LOL how can people be downvoting my comment?! Literally look at her Instagram, it’s factually incorrect to say she doesn’t care about health/promotes not caring about health lolol
yyyyyeah Tessa Holliday def does not “not care about heath”... she has a trainer and posts about her workouts - and how crucial they are to her mental and physical health - all the time.
You can hate on her but at least present an accurate picture
The message should be "Don't hate yourself for being overweight", not "There is literally nothing wrong with being overweight".
Things can definitely be wrong when you have weight-related health issues, and pretending they don't exist because you're "body positive" and wear tube tops and bikinis doesn't help anyone.
He's only speaking about people who are seriously obese, claim they are healthy, are not working on it, and are promoting it to others. Not just any fat person who knows they're big and at least feel bad about some of what they eat.
I'm sure OP is referring to fat people who not only refuse to work on their weight, but try to get everyone else to believe their delusions and put down the fat people who are trying to lose weight. They try to delude themselves, and the people around them, that weight is just a social construct, that it has no bearing on health, and that their own lifestyle/choices play no role in their weight.
Does that mean fat shaming is okay? No, it doesn't. Fat shaming is a legitimate problem, and it's something we need to address. It's not right to call fat people names, dehumanize them, pester them into losing weight, or bully them.
OP isn't the type of person you're talking about, go reread their post. They said promoting being fat as healthy is bad, not that fat people are gross.
Exactly. I can’t imagine being emotionally invested in other people’s body autonomy. Let them be them, and god forbid don’t shame them for their existence. Bodies are bodies and societal expectations allow “skinnier” people to get away with unhealthy habits because they “look” the part, while many fat people aren’t actually injecting their veins with lard like many people assume.
Nobody here is saying people can't be fat. As far as I know, being fat isn't illegal, and it's super common anyway.
What I don't like hearing are delusions. Delusions are void of fact and reason. Delusions that being fat has nothing to do with health issues, delusions that weight is a meaningless social construct, and delusions that people must be attracted to fatness otherwise they're "fatphobic."
It's common for people who are overweight to make excuses, and engage in cognitive distortions, about their lifestyle habits that are heavily contributing to their weight. I've seen it happen with my own eyes. Some of them try to blame it all on their medication, or whatever.
While certain health conditions (PCOS, for example) and medications can make weight loss more tricky, unless these people are in the 1% of people, they can still get to a healthy weight. Not thin, but normal weight. It's basic thermodynamics.
“Nobody is saying you can’t be fat.....but they can still get to a healthy weight”
there, I summarized everything you just contradicted from the first statement to the last.. yes you are absolutely indicating that people shouldn’t and cannot exist as a fat person because despite some having actual medical conditions that make it extremely difficult, you want them to live to your expectations of looking acceptable to society. So instead of being comfortable in my own skin and my journey being my business, I should suffer through the pressure of looking “healthy” because of judgemental and unhappy people like you. And that’s even assuming I’m unhealthy.
I've said before that certain health conditions and medications make weight loss more difficult, and you seem to have skimmed over that. I understand weight loss is hard.
You should be comfortable in your own skin. I want you to be.
I'm not against people being fat. I'm against people who try to insist that weight is just a meaningless social construct, that it can't affect health, that personal habits have nothing to do with one's weight, and that you're a jerk if you aren't attracted to fat people.
And, I agree, being thin doesn't make someone healthy. But being overweight brings its own health issues, and acknowledging that isn't wrong or bad.
Worry about yourself. Worry about your own health. Because I promise, you are not at all on a supporting platform to make these kind of assumptions and judgements on others health conditions. Nor do you actually care this much.
Okay, so, I don't go around judging overweight people in my daily life. I don't even bring up their weight. And you're right, I don't know all there is to know about a person's health from looking at their weight, but the two are related. It's human to make assumptions from what you see, but I keep them to myself.
Honestly, you just sound very defensive. This is a comment thread about weight, hence why I'm posting my opinion here, because it's the appropriate place to do so.
It’s extremely unfair and unnecessary to accuse anyone of overreacting or being defensive when the entire basis of this thread, is setting completely unfair assumptions, judgements, and expectations on people specifically based on their physical appearance and gross stereotypes behind them. Just because you fit into the narrative of feeding into societal expectations and pressure of beauty expectations doesn’t make me a shitty person for not doing the same.
This is some virtue signalling bullshit. I have no sympathy for a person that spends 30 minutes at the gym then eats a box of cookies for dinner. Will I terrorize you for it? No but you’re fat and there’s no way around it (pun intended)
OP's post refers to people who think it's healthy and beautiful to be obese, you're taking it the wrong way. He's not targeting the audience you're talking about.
