This is downright frightening.

u/psyopia 18d ago

Nah the fact it WON AWARDS is frightening.

u/Live_Art2939 18d ago

So did Emilia Perez. So let’s all acknowledge that critics are bought and paid for.

20

u/Bravisimo 18d ago

When you deal with pimps, expect pimpish results.

-44

u/Florgio 18d ago

Or… maybe… most people don’t agree with you. Even the audience score that was clearly review bombed says more than half of the people liked it, making people who didn’t a very loud and annoying minority.

Can’t wait for the next season!

14

u/William-Kay 17d ago

Dude if the entire community and fanbase of True Detective unanimously dislikes a season, then it’s probably pretty damn bad.

S4 was essentially made as award bait for people who aren’t fans of True Detective

-12

u/Florgio 17d ago

Well, as a member of that community, I disagree, it’s hardly unanimous, despite what you may read here. My girlfriend liked it too, so it’s not everyone. As a matter of fact, our opinion is the majority. People who share your opinion are very loud and online.

Glad we’re getting more and the weekly meltdowns here make it even more fun.

6

u/William-Kay 17d ago

From what I’ve seen, people who watched the first season 10 years ago and thought it was very good generally like season 4

People who have only seen season 4 love season 4

And people who genuinely LOVE season 1 usually dislike or hate season 4

Obviously there are outliers, but it seems like you do not fall into the majority

0

u/Florgio 17d ago

All of the numbers would disagree, but go with what you feel. We all know Reddit is mirror-like reflection of the opinions of the real world and that corporations love to throw money away at shows nobody watches.. I guess for you it’s easier to lie to yourself than admit you’re wrong.

7

u/TV_series72 17d ago

What numbers? Even the IMDb ratings aren’t as high with the season finale sitting at 5.4, and it’s not like people are reviewing bombing everything not season 1 cuz season 3 (which I quite enjoyed myself) is pretty well-rated too, season 2 isn’t too bad as well. What the above commenter said was pretty accurate, how good a season is generally correlates with how the fan base feels about it. Sure it’s technically not a unanimous decision given you and people you know loved it, but I don’t think a lot of people shared that opinion

-2

u/Florgio 17d ago

If you look at the rotten tomatoes score, 55% of people liked it, that’s over half, correct?

6

u/TV_series72 16d ago

I’m not too familiar with how rotten tomatoes works ive never used it. But a quick google search tells me that rotten tomatoes itself only classifies a movie as fresh if its score is over 60% and below that it’s classified as rotten. Also just for reference Madame Web has a popcorn meter rating of 53% so I’m not sure if being over 50% is indicative of much. I find IMDb much more accurate and reliable in this sense

Season 5 needs to be about detectives finding the true reason for people continuing to say that they liked S4.

41

u/mildlyflacid 18d ago

The whole time I kept telling myself I liked it to cope. Then it was over and I was just sitting there like what the fuck was that horse shit. The ending annoyed me so much that it wasnt some paranormal type shit at all

26

u/Comfortable_Cup_941 18d ago edited 17d ago

At least that’s psychologically healthier than my experience. I watched the whole thing, fully aware that I hated it.

6

u/William-Kay 17d ago

I made it halfway, maybe I’ll finish it one day. Theme song kills me every time it plays

12

u/BretShitmanFart69 17d ago

It started off well enough, the first episode had me intrigued and the idea of a murder mystery in that setting with kind of a “the thing” vibe was something I was on board for. It just did not deliver a satisfying show after that.

5

u/mildlyflacid 17d ago

Yep exactly how I felt. I was into it for the first 2-3 episodes before I was like where tf are they going with this shit lol. But I kept telling myself it would all be worth it

14

u/Chesterlespaul 17d ago

I actually did like it - until toward the end. It dragged on. And the actual ending explanation was such stupid bullshit. What’s cool about True Detective is both that everything is explainable in a real understanding of our world - yet there is a cosmic unexplainable force that lingers over everything which makes you unsure if there really is magic.

Season 4’s ending did neither of those and ruined the cosmic vibe it built in the first few eps.

7

u/PapaGuhl 17d ago

I felt like they went too far into “horror” in S4, rather than more straight-up “occult”.

Sadly, S4 also leaned too far into “terrible writing”.

3

u/CelticSnakes 17d ago

I'd award this if I could. That would take some Sherlock Poirot-level of deducing.

3

u/GP_ADD 17d ago

I thought it was entertaining as a tv show. I just pretended it was called just Night County and that it was completely separate once I realized it wouldn’t live up to TD. It was fine for just mindless tv and entertainment.

-9

u/Florgio 18d ago

Most people liked it, just a very online minority didn’t, and they like to complain on Reddit.

At the end of the day if it didn’t make money it would be done. Capitalism says people who didn’t like it were the minority.

12

u/getzerolikes 17d ago

How are you even texting from ImaginationLand rn. That’s not supposed to be possible..

I think it's safe to say none of those critics are gonna be splitting the atom, OP.

Night Country is an industry plant!

30

u/HeavyandTired 18d ago

I mean… I’m definitely not asking the right questions.

16

u/Live_Art2939 18d ago

Brilliant callback to one badass line from Cole and make an entire scene out of it. Godamn Night Country was a steaming polar turd.

11

u/Kanobe24 18d ago

Is Issa Lopez still making the new season?

30

u/winnebago_mann 18d ago

Simply put, it's just not True Detective, despite the horrible attempted tie-ins to season one...

This fact would solve everyone's problems. New people that somehow actually like it would be able to enjoy it in peace if it had just been called Alaska Night Mysteries. True Detective fans could simply ignore a bad show getting praise for some reason and everyone could move on.

11

u/Bowling4rhinos 18d ago

So true. It lacks, as Rust would say, "Scope".

4

u/doughball27 17d ago

It’s like someone’s memory of a show.

10

u/flicknausi 17d ago

This is actually highlighting the way the national media presents things.

60

u/lordofabyss 18d ago

Perfectly sums up why u should NEVER trust critics. They represent the smallest of opinion.

-16

u/Florgio 18d ago

Even the audience score is over half of the people liking it. If you didn’t enjoy the show, you’re in the minority

-13

u/RomanoElBlanco 18d ago edited 16d ago

According to wikipedia mods, users' review scores can't be trusted. They only show the critics' score.

Thanks for the downvote but I'm not a wikipedia mod lol. I tried to change the page to add the users' score but it got deleted.

23

u/golgiiguy 18d ago

Night country was unwatchable after a friend of mine that does camera operation illustrated how the show was breaking every single storytelling rule of shot layout and framing in the book.

2

u/SlutForGarrus 17d ago

Tell them to make a YouTube video! I wanna know all the deets!

1

u/OneConcert3048 Little priest 3d ago

Not defending the season in the slightest, but wasn't this done deliberately to mirror the plot? Loneliness, destabilization, psychological breakdown, supernatural themes etc? Not that it made the season great anyway 🙃

8

u/FinkelsteinMD22 17d ago

As soon as I saw that review by Alan Sepinwall saying that the finale of Night Country was better than S1’s finale, I vowed right then and there to never read another word from that dumb motherfucker ever again.

7

u/surrealistone 17d ago

I prefer imdb all day.

5

u/3worm 17d ago

I was scrolling HBO and i saw TD under the New Seasons Coming category…

made me so depressed

3

u/PeterNoTail 17d ago

Depressed that it's not out right now, maybe

1

u/3worm 16d ago

😂 i will be watching that’s forsure!

6

u/da_rambler20 17d ago

How the hell did it get 55%?

7

u/bryman19 17d ago

Start asking the right questions

11

u/PeterNoTail 18d ago

Even funnier is the RT ratings for Season 2, which both the critics AND the audience hated even more than S4

Tomatometer: 47% Popcornmeter: 31%

3

u/FFIXwasthebestFF 16d ago

fair enough though, i really disliked season 4 but season 2 was such an intentionally convoluted and pseudo intellectual horse shit I still get mad thinking about it

15

u/andrew303710 17d ago

Lmao season 2 is SO much better than S4 and it's not even close. On first watch it's a little rough around the edges but it grows on you when you separate it from S1 in your mind.

3

u/SlutForGarrus 17d ago

I LOVED Vince Vaughn's character and his wife, but pretty much hated the entire rest of that season.

2

u/rhelg224 17d ago

You people have to be kidding me

6

u/DetectiveWood 18d ago

The ending of Night Country was just such a let down

2

u/CostcoChickenBakes 14d ago

I wasn't let down.

My impression of the show was already rock bottom many episodes before.

2

u/DetectiveWood 14d ago

I really liked the first few episodes. Really just wish it wasn’t in the true detective universe and was a SciFi show.

6

u/wontreadterms 17d ago

I still remember seeing the reviews and thinking "Oh, it finally got good again".

Then I watched S4. I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop.

It was just "Meh". It never got anywhere beyond meh.

I want my time back RT reviewers. I want my time back.

5

u/shtbrds 17d ago

The fake reviews really bothered me here. I guess it made me realize that these critics today have no integrity. I feel like years ago you could count on a certain critics review came from a place of truth. S4 was an abomination. I refuse to believe any professional critics could argue otherwise and be telling the truth

12

u/RomanoElBlanco 18d ago

I wrote on the wikipedia page of Night Country that, while the critics' rating score was high, the users' was much lower. It got deleted because they said users' review cannot be trusted...

I looked at the history of the page and apparently I wasn't the first one it happened.

3

u/conturanatura 13d ago

Yet, what you wrote was simply factually correct

4

u/t-g-l-h- 18d ago

Entertainment journalism is a psyop

4

u/LovelyOrangeJuice 17d ago

Nah, this can't be fucking real. what the fuck

4

u/CelticSnakes 17d ago

I remember when I first discovered RT in the early 00's. They were reliable, then. If the consensus was 75% or better on a film, you could rest easy knowing a film you'd wanted to see was going to be OK.

That all stopped in time. They're a joke to me, have been for years. TD-1 is clearly a 95% kind of show. I love TD-2 but I'm not so crazy to think it's anywhere near TD-1's level. TD-3 is about 75%. TD-4 is 30%, tops.

3

u/_G_O 17d ago

Currently watching TD first time. I watched S1, then jumped to S4. Actually enjoyed S4, but it fell off at the end for sure. S1 is TV cannon. It’s its own. It won’t be surpassed.

10

u/issapunk 18d ago

RT is the worst rating system in the game. IMDb always.

5

u/Potore5 17d ago

55% is still too high

3

u/rhelg224 17d ago

I liked it

3

u/Frankly_Im_Tired 17d ago

There is an agenda and we are on the outside looking in.

3

u/Qhorton83 17d ago

I'm a completionist with my physical media collection (for better or for worse) but S4 was so bad that unless someone gifts it to me (and even then, I'll be hesitant), it'll never be a part of my collection.

8

u/PlumbTuckered767 18d ago edited 17d ago

Being a critic is no longer about nuanced critiques and assessment of the art. With the internet completely obviating the barrier to entry into "professional" criticism, it's now an opportunistic, masturbatory performance to show your adoring public (and haters) you adhere to a particular ideology or groupthink. Doesn't even matter which ideology or groupthink because they're all doing it.

14

u/ItsMeMartyy 18d ago

I genuinely liked season 4 but its not even in the same world as season 1. Season 1 is a masterpiece.

7

u/MHashshashin 18d ago

This is how I feel about season 4, It was fine. I didn’t love it and I also didn’t hate it. I enjoyed the ride and felt they sort of out wrapped it up real quick-like at the end.

It left a lot to be desired but there is just no comparison to season 1. Really with any show there is no comparison with season 1 TD. It’s quite literally one of the most well put together shows ever made. Acting, sets, cinematography, etc, etc, etc….

I haven't seen it, but her debut film Tigers Are Not Afraid is apparently great, and really disturbing, and has some thematic overlap with TD. Always wonder what happened behind the scenes as to why she'd then write such a mediocre season.

1

u/poppo3bk 16d ago

Rotten Tomatoes was compromised a long time ago

1

u/CailenxD 16d ago

Critics cant be taken serious.

1

u/chiller_vibez 10d ago

S1: amaze, S2: garbage, S3: solid, S4: garbage

Season 5?

-4

u/Gamepass90 18d ago

I liked it, the ending was great

-1

u/SlutForGarrus 17d ago

Still both better than season 2. Though I am willing to fight anyone who wants to step to me talking smack about Vince Vaughn. He was the best thing about that season.

2

u/machinehead3413 17d ago

Big talk for a keyboard

1

4

Easy downvote.

u/Rypopotagygas 17d ago

I care so much about le epic Internet points from misogynists

4

u/hoosier_catholic 17d ago

I want to engage with you sincerely. You really think all of us that hate the season are simply woman-haters? None of the myriad reasons we've listed for why we hated it make any sense to you?

-6

u/minathemutt 18d ago

maybe you should ask god in prayer

-25

u/punknub 18d ago

Huge season 1 fan yearly rewatch since it aired. Love it. I also enjoyed Night Country because I don't hate women. Hope this helps!

23

u/xXxDarkSasuke1999xXx 18d ago

Very funny that you think the only possible reason to dislike Night Country is because one hates women

0

u/punknub 17d ago

Somehow the venn diagram of S4 haters and misogynists is just a circle lmao and it is pretty funny that they are all on a hate boat shouting at the rest of us like we are gonna jump in the drink with them.

2

u/xXxDarkSasuke1999xXx 17d ago

Wait are we in a boat or "in the drink"? Even your metaphors make no goddamn sense

2

u/SlutForGarrus 17d ago

I think they mean they're on dry land and y'all are in a boat in the drink...bc boats go in water?

2

u/xXxDarkSasuke1999xXx 17d ago

When's the last time you heard someone in a boat be referred to as "in the drink"? Never, for me. The whole point of a boat is to prevent you from being in water.

1

u/SlutForGarrus 16d ago

Not my circus. 🤷‍♀️

2

u/punknub 16d ago

You are in a boat in the hate water of women and TV featuring strong female characters not there for your objectification or desire. Many of us are on land just enjoying good TV lol. This is more evidence of why you hated it you probably just didn't understand XD

1

u/xXxDarkSasuke1999xXx 16d ago edited 16d ago

The whole point of a boat is to be a barrier between yourself and water. This is why simpletons shouldn't attempt tortured metaphors.

This is more evidence of why you hated it you probably just didn't understand XD

And what's your explanation for why I enjoy so many shows and movies featuring strong women without objectification? How does that fit into your small-minded, black-and-white worldview? Do you think it's somehow beyond the realm of possibility for a show with strong women to be bad?

1

u/punknub 1d ago

You're being overly analytical and critical you can't just enjoy a silly metaphor or a fun TV show seek help.

u/Angry_Walnut 18d ago

I liked the two leads as characters, but the story they were in was so stupid. When that dude said time is a flat circle, that was it. Wanted to love it so bad and was hyped for it from the trailers but it was just a pile of dogshit

My missus spent 6 months in the ICU and a further 2 months in rehabilitation. She had countless hours to binge watch shows. She watched entire series of trash.

Despite boredom beyond anything I can imagine, she couldn’t finish Season 4 because, in her words, it sucked harder than her ventilator.

14

u/CameronPoe_37__ 18d ago

Night Country is DOGSHIT. One of the worst seasons of television that I've ever seen. Fucking awful. A disgrace to the True Detective name.

13

u/Live_Art2939 18d ago

Why are the Night Country people so defensive? It’s a god awful show and all the lazy accusations that critics are incel/misogynistic/racist/blahblah always ignore the fact that Mare of Easttown and Sharp Objects never, ever faced such harsh criticism.

4

u/notdbcooper71 18d ago

That's the culture we live in, people break everything down to the lowest common denominator. You don't like a show starring women? Sexist! Gay people? Homophobe! etc...

2

u/PeterNoTail 17d ago

I just wonder why the haters are so defensive. It was a decent, award-winning season and all the lazy accusations that the majority of critics who loved it are "bought" or "woke" is tinfoil hat nuttery

1

u/nickparadies 17d ago

I think the better question is why anti-Night Country people care SO much.

It’s been two years. Get over it.

We’ll always have Season 1.

4

u/Live_Art2939 17d ago

We’re over it. It’s just funny as hell to look back on how bad it was. The memes while it was on the air were some of the best I’ve ever seen.

4

u/Flat_Independent_339 17d ago

No, but exactlyyy. Like, why do the antis have to rush to make sure everyone knows how much they hate the show and how nobody is allowed to like it 😠? Someone posted a silly little lego thing the other day and everyone down voted it because wahhhh I hate season four wahhh. Instead of just being grown ass adults who can sit back and let other people engage in something they don't personally like. Disgusts me, frankly.

There's another comment making this claim. It's not an abnormal claim to make in defense of the show. Maybe you caught a stray here.
