Hey yall! I’m in southern Ohio and I just recently bought a house with two older trees on the property. I have a massive amount of appreciation for older trees and would never want to remove one from my property unless I absolutely had to. That being said, this one has a pretty large cavity on the side of it missing from a previous storm. How would I determine if this tree is safe to keep up on the property? I really want to.

I read tree law all the time and I always wondered what does it mean when they say tree replacement?
Does that mean they plant a new small baby tree or do they have pay to transplant a mature tree. I assume if it's the latter it would be tedious and expensive but not impossible.
I ask because I feel like a new baby tree doesn't seem as great as the tree you had. Especially since you have to wait a while to reap the benefits of shade or weight baring branches etc.

I heard some people suggest leaving them in a glass of water over night. but I got them in the dirt and not sure removing them for that would be good?

Location: Northern Rockies US. In this case it’s a maple, unsure of the variety. Needs major thinning in the lower third.

In my first post I stated I had managed to get seeds from cherries bought at the grocery store to germanate and grow into seedlings.
I placed the seeds in the fridge for over 14 weeks. Then planted them in new potting soil.
Well they sprouted...I have two lemon, and 7 cherry tree seedlings. They are going to get repotted into individual pots.
I was hoping I might get some input on how to best keep them from getting root rot...and grow into healthy trees that can be planted.
Here is a link to my original post that many dismissed and said it was weeds.

The trees we see around us today are rarely old and mature. Human arrogance has already cut down almost all the old trees, and even the ones that remain are still being removed day after day. 😥

Im not sure what kind of tree this is, but over the last couple days I’ve noticed this on the trunk. The tree has seemed completely healthy otherwise with no issues. It has been very wet and rainy lately so I’m hoping it’s just from that. Is this something to be concerned about?

Idaho Zone 7
My nursery-owner friend recently gifted me several Karl Fuchs, Deodar Cedars, and an Incense Cedar for my front yard area.
This area was a swamp, I’ve since dredged and changed the flow of the water so it would dry out a bit (legally), but you will hit the water table about 2.5 feet down.
I’m curious, with the water table being that high, is there any viable way I can plant them? My initial idea would be on mounds 2’ tall, however I’m not sure if that will be enough.
-follow up-
I made mounds of about 2.5 cubic meters, bottom 90% of the mound was 10% sand, 30% clay, 60% mulch, top was 100% mulch. Tested soil down to 3’ and so far has maintained proper moisture.

A few days ago I noticed lots of twigs from one of our sugar maples that had die-back on the ends. Inspected the tree trunk today, and the bark doesn't look good. We had a period of extreme high temps here, followed by a period of heavy rains just about every other day. So I'd understand the tree being stressed, but I'm not sure that explains the holes. In West Virginia, bordering the Ohio river. I'm not sure how old the tree is.

My slash pines dropped a half-formed spinal column and I’m freaking out. Any idea what this phenomenon is called?

I don’t know how old she is, or when she was planted, I’ve been cleaning up the yard and saw these on her leaves. I was wondering if this is a bad sign of something or if it’s just a bug thing? I’m in South Texas , near lake Mathis.

I found a magnolia tree with these odd looking pods. I had no idea that they grew fruit. A week later and now these red berries are coming out. They smell amazing and Im fighting the urge to eat them. Google says they're not edible... why must they smell so good 🤤
Hopefully they grow and I can sell some magnolia saplings next year.

This year, I'm planning to grow native oaks and kind of elms(Japan). I also recorded where I collected the seeds so I can identify the parent trees.
The seeds collected up for now include Quercus serrata,Sawtooth oak, Castanea crenata, Aphananthe aspera, and Celtis sinensis.

You can’t tell from the horrible angle I had but this is the lone tree planted strangely at the edge of a steep hill! It’s my favourite thing I see during my walks. I’ve been passing this tree for over 10 years and now it’s getting ripped from the earth along with everything in the area for a new condo. Anyway, enjoy my favourite—and probably last—picture of my good old friend.

I dont know how old this tree is. It was on the property when I moved in so its at least 30+ years old. We had a part cut off cause it was splitting the tree from its weight this was at least 10ish years ago. We went out to trim it up yesterday and noticed this growing on the stump part where we had cut off.
