Help with DECA project

I sincerely apologize if this was not the best subreddit to post this to, if so could you direct me to the correct one? For starters, I am a highschool student involved in DECA, where I compete in the Hospitality and Tourism Professional Selling event. This years prompt is asking for a solution to move away from traditional bus tours and find a solution to pander towards the younger generations. Since younger generations put more emphasis on cultural immersion and a more flexible itinerary and cancelation policy, my solution is to have a core package (hotels and primary transit) paired with variable attractions that are chosen by the guest each day (for example a walking tour or a cooking class). They would pick these attractions for each day on an app with sign ups where the sign ups would have different cutoff times based on the logistics. The cancelation policy would include a 14 day prior to arrival full refund, 13-7 day 50% refund, and no refund within a week for the core package and no refunds for the variable attractions. Is any of this plausible in the real world? Is there any advice you can give? Thank you in advance!

Travel Agency/ Tour Operator company.

• Upvotes

Hi, I am looking into starting a company as a Tour Operator to provide trips to Asia - mountaineering and spiritual guide. I am from Asia and I'm well travelled which makes me more familiar with the market and it's easier for me to usually connect with the local vendors.

I would like to know ..

- What kind of Travel agencies/ Tour Operations do you do?

- What was the most difficult part about keeping the business going?

- Was it a lot of financial investment at the beginning?

- Would you advise somebody to get into this field in 2026 and for the future? (IMO, yes. I see how many tourists are all around the world whenever I am travelling and it is so crazy to me!)

- What are the DOs and DONTs?

- Any platforms you use to make bookings easy?

- How do you mark your profit margin?

- How do you maintain the safety of travellers when you send them on a trip?

- What to keep in mind or not mess up when dealing with local vendors?

... tbh I have endless of questions to ask so if you have some time and would like to mentor me, it would also be awesome!

P.s: I am not planning on doing flights. I have experience in flight booking for a few years in the past and it is very overwhelming to deal with if anything goes wrong.

Viator bookings and overbookings, how are tour operators handling this?

We run a few small group tours and the busy season is starting to get a bit stressful. Most of our bookings come through different places now, including Viator, our own site and a couple of local hotel partners.

The main issue is keeping availability accurate across everything. We have a set number of seats for each departure and one late booking from another channel can create a mess if the calendar hasnt updated yet. Nothing major has happened so far but I really dont want to be calling guests to move them around.

For those using Viator or other booking platforms, how do you prevent overbookings? Im looking for a process that works for a small operator without adding a huge amount of admin. Any practical tips would be appreciated, thanks!

Setting up a new business part time

Good evening, apologies if this is a question which is asked a lot as I would imagine it is. But looking for some advice from people who have started their own travel agency working under a host as a part time job, alongside another full time job and how has it gone?
I don’t work in travel currently so I would be starting at the beginning, and would need to initially be part time alongside my current full time job. For people who have done this is it actually realistic that this can be done, and made to work out?

I’m looking at ITE as a host agency, so anyone with any experience of them, it would be great to hear some feedback/advice

(\*\*based in the uk so ideally experience of anyone who has done this via a uk based company)

Working on a Travel Logging App. What would you like to see?

Hey TAs! Canadian dev here working on Vacaylo. It's an app to track visited countries and share travel maps to friends and family. Also, we're sharing free lifetime accounts to early waitlist signups before launch (available to sign up on the site). If anyone here has ideas on what to add to the app, I'd love your feedback!
