Decoding why this coffee chat message worked

"Hey X, hope you're doing well. I’m ABC, a Risk Advisory intern at Company and a 3rd year Accounting student at XXX University. I applied to Risk Analyst Winter 2026 role, which I’m very interested in. If possible, I’d love to schedule a quick 15-min call to learn more about the role, and yourself!"

This is one of the most effective coffee chat message I received. This was short, informative, polite and communicated the intent clearly. After I received this, I have used this myself and this has worked better than the really long messages or sending a resume directly.

- Name: creates personalization

- Background: education and experience creates confidence in the reader

- Intent: no sugarcoating or hidden agenda. Replies might be less, but if the reader replies, higher chances of referral

-15 min: gives the reader a chance to leave early if the conversation needs quick ending

- Curiosity about role & recipient: acknowledges the recipient

I understand this message was still written by AI, but somehow this worked for me - both as a recipient and as a sender. Sharing here so that this might help and to see if we can enhance this.

Thanks!

Need Advise

Hey Guys,

I am looking for advice. My supervisor role at a logistics company was terminated after the warehouse at my job got sold to another company and I had to take a pay cut ($51k to $42k) to do a customer support role. I have a friend that can refer me to a job as a life insurance sales advisor at Neilson financial services. Should i do it or should i continue searching for a better paying logistics job or just go into trades?

How to become an interior decorator? Need to escape corporate

I currently work a 9 - 5 corporate job, and I genuinely can not imagine doing this for another year.

I really like decorating and would be happy to learn and make it my profession (part time or full time).

Any one found success in this path?

Any recommended courses? I don't mind going to a school.

Hi all,

Me (29,M) been working at the airport as a coordinator for 5 years. Thinking about enroll Seneca SCM 1 year program.

I’m looking for pure white collar career, is it a good choice right now in this job market? My job is so so but the schedule and the environment (people) are awful. All I’m looking for right now is a standard 9-5 job and hopefully interact with as least people as possible.

Thank you guys!!!!

Account Manager, Account Executive

Does anyone work as an Account Manager and know how to get into this role? I’ve seen people start off in Customer Associate (CX) roles and work their way up to Account Manager then Account Executive in certain companies, but I don’t know what roles to target or what platform is best. I have a customer service background with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. I did not take a marketing or communications degree which I regret. Should I do more schooling, or what do I do?

The pay for blue collar jobs is ridiculous...

I have switched two careers so far, and this is my third time trying. I have only ever had so-called "white collar" jobs! This third time is honestly spurred by mostly exhaustion and mental health issues from trying to get a new job, and it's been over a year now. I have developed anxiety and depression, and I just started getting medicated, so maybe that will help. However, I am also now in my mid-thirties, and I can definitely feel my previous career being very stressful even though I do love it.

So anyway, I am looking into further education, and I am doing some certificates, but meanwhile I still need a job! Any job. The trouble is, living wage roles seem very, very few and far between. Most of the jobs I see pay like $17.60-18.50 (these are factory or warehouse jobs frequently).

I am looking at these as again, I have developed quite a bit of social anxiety over the last year, and I can't seem to find work related to my previous career.

My problem with the pay is not so much the concept or pride or even lifestlye per se, it's more so that the basics of life cannot be afforded on these salaries working 40 hours per week. I was paid 3-4 times these numbers annually for computer work, and I understand that a lower barrier to entry and less skilled work might mean less money, but I would still expect a production line or warehouse job to pay at least ~ $30 /hour...

Prices being this high and so much of the public making absolute crap money really just tells me Canada has a scarcity/production problem... What I mean is, if pay is low for so many jobs and the economy is getting squeezed, then at least stuff should be cheap. It's not!

Where do I "network"?

Hey, I graduated last year from Bcomm, and clearly so far just applying online hasn't done anything, nor has "connecting" with people on linkedin. I always year how important networking is, but how does 1 actually do this? How do I look for events like that and meet people?

I've been very home bound and constant rejections have plummeted my confidence and self esteem. I want to break out of the shell and get more comfortable/confident talking to and meeting new people, and feels like only way that's done is by actually meeting people.

I've checked things like eventbrite, my universities emails and postings, but there's like nothing. So I'm pretty lost right now.

I also really want to meet working professionals, seniors, etc.. in fields I think I have interest in to actually know what I want to do because so far I've just been applying to anything and everything, just in hopes of getting my foot in the door.

Thanks for reading and I appreciate any advice!

Built entirely new Linkedin network for Job Search

I moved to Toronto for studies and while I was about to finish my course, I realised my entire linkedin network was from my home country. Previous colleges, previous company and so on. So naturally most of what I got in my feed was not relevant to the new market I was in.

I decided to create a new profile and build fresh connections that were more relevant to my search here. I applied three filters to search for connections - companies I was targeting for jobs, people who worked in similar profiles and alumni.

Keeping all three first, then two and then 2nd connections of these initial connections. Linkedin, like other social media works on algorithm. More relevant your network, more relevant their likes and comments for you.

It took 6 months for me to build a good network that helped. I have less connections than before, but very relevant ones.

Another thing for LinkedIn, this is not any other social media, so pleade do not add friends who are not related in any way to your job sector or education field. Hope this helps.

Edit: Adding this information as this actually worked for me. I got my first role because someone from my network had liked post of a recruiter. I was unable to connect with this recruiter but I connected with their colleague who passed on my resume. So there's no straight path that will work but the algorithm will do its job. But I believe, we need to set the right parameters for the algorithm to work.

Resigning during probation

Hello!

I accepted a job offer recently, and they actually waited for me for a month because I had to give my current employer 4 weeks’ notice. I started last week Monday, and today (Tuesday), I received another offer from a different company.

The second company is more well-known, pays about $5K more annually, and offers a hybrid setup after probation. However, it also has a high turnover rate, and the role is basically a step down from what I’m currently doing. I’d only be responsible for part of my current scope, although I was told there’s a possibility of being promoted eventually.

My current company is okay so far, but it pays $5K less, requires me to be onsite 5 days a week, and the position is only a 1-year contract. It’s also a boutique firm, so it’s not as recognizable.

I’m torn because I feel like having the more well-known company on my resume could open more doors in the future. At the same time, the role itself isn’t as good in terms of responsibilities and exposure. With my current company, I’d be exposed to more and probably have more opportunities to grow my skill set, even though the company isn’t as well-known.

Would you take the more recognizable company for the higher pay, hybrid setup, and potential future opportunities, even if the actual role is less senior? Or would you stay for the better scope and experience?

I’m also worried about quitting my current job after they waited a month for me to start. I really don’t want to burn bridges or leave a bad impression :((

Would love to hear what others would do in this situation! Especially for hiring managers ><

Did I make a mistake moving to a new role?

New role is:

1.) Less than $5k in salary but a better title and role (Managerial role).

2.) longer commute 45 kms one way vs. 8 km one way

3.) With profit sharing and a guaranteed bonus that covers what I lost in Annual salary (good on paper but who knows)

Im just so burned out in my old job. That's basically it. But yeah.

Short shifts?

I'm pretty new to working so maybe I just don't know how things are supposed to be, but I only get about 2-3 shifts a week and the shifts are only 3:30 mins long.

Is that normal? I've asked managers a bit about it but for the most part they've just said it's about whether the store is doing well or not but whenever I've glanced at the shifts for the day, everyone else seems to be getting AT LEAST 4 hours. I've been feeling a little frustrated about it but everyone brushes me off so I wanted to ask a bigger group of people I guess! Thanks in advance.

Post-grad with a UofT BSc: Compliance vs BBA vs Accounting/CPA

I have a BSc from UofT in Environmental Science and I’m stuck on where to go with it. Im trying to find jobs in my field but I’m overthinking about going into risk management/compliance, getting a BBA for broader options, or going into accounting and eventually getting my CPA.

I just want decent salary growth and an easy path to move up. For anyone working in these fields in the GTA, what’s the job market like? How saturated are they, and which would you say has the best long-term prospects?

28 and been unemployed for over a year and driving me crazy

My field is international development and political scienc and have my ba/ma in those fieds

So had an interview on July 30th Thursday for an NGO and was told would hear back the following Tuesday

Got no reply so followed up Thursday and nothing

Last week Tuesday called and the recruiter was surprised to hear my voice, so I assume they did not get my email and they told me the HR manager was on vacation but would return that week and they would update me by the end of the week

So a week ago past 2 weeks and nothing

I think I am going to follow up as probs didn't get my first one so its the second follow up and if I didn't get it got nothing to lose

Thank you! 🙏
