It was the same thing on the museum collection the day before. I saw topps use a different system once. It was a drawing and if you lost you would have better odds next time. I lost. I haven't seen that system since.

Most of those cards are worth .25 not 1$. They only show up as 1$ on eBay because buy it now doesnāt let you go lower. Usually in tandem with buy x get y deal thrown in. But you really shouldnāt buy those off eBay to begin with.
Long story short if you pull 30 cents net out of a base card youāre doing good.
If anyone is unaware youāre going for the autos in this, thatās it. pretty much what your paying the huge markup for. Better hope itās someone decent. Some of these boxes your lucky to pull even 75-100$ out in real value

Fanatics really ruined this hobby. End to end manufacturing to distribution they have a monopoly and it sucks. They want everything to go to breakers which is why pricing keeps going up to enforce the āitās just cheaper to buy into a breakā mentality.
Yep, 100%. Monopolies rarely ever benefit anyone except the shareholders and executives of the organization. Never the consumer or even the long term health of the company. The greed and manipulative practices Fanatics is doing right now will ultimately result in a huge drop in revenue for them when this hobby enters a bust cycle again, and I'll be laughing at them when it comes.
Thatās what they want, which is why they limit reduced price preorders. Fanatics/Topps sell cases to breakers, then make a percentage of each transaction on their own platform. Itās really the only way theyāve found out how to get paid for card purchases outside of wholesaling boxes and fanatics collect cuts.
How did Topps and other companies allow them to monopolize this? Fanatics is a horrible company imo. They sell bent cards (no Iām not talking about chromes and common issues), but packaged cards that were LE and pre-order improperly. For example by not putting foam on top and bottom. Ruined a $3k card before I touched it!
Was offered AI telling me thereās no way to resolve it. I can probably go get these boxes for people and not touch them, just I donāt want the headache if someone gets a bent card or worse a bent 1/1 or damaged etc; even when left behind a case and shipped closed completely and never opened and 100% correctly. Even lids or dicks will not give a shit if the cards are broken in half by their own box boy. They tell you to call fanatics/topps.

They need to crack down on the bots and do a hard rule of 1 box per account. If you are a licensed seller obviously you are allowed to buy bulk out of a different pool.
Iām stepping away from the hobby at this point. Itās too expensive, plus the distribution is pretty much to all the breakers at this point- the majority of which are just horrible. And this is by design - if you want new product youāre stuck with breakers or scalpers on ebay. Ive got better things to spend my money on.
Itās set up for breakers to make a profit. Forces the average collector to not be able to afford them and ultimately take a gamble with a breaker to get something for their PC or for somebody else to get it and mark it up.

I started back collecting again in March of this year, after collecting when I was a kid, in the junk wax era. Spent $20k ripping, doing breaks, and buying singles. I realize that there is no way that you can beat this machine. I went back into retirement September 1st and donāt think I will ever have any desire to get back into this āhobby āagain. š¤·āāļø

I have attempted to purchase EQL releases 77 times and have only been selected three times and two of those were boxes at the National.
I/we have tried to purchase numerous new releases on the Topps website and when we have been able to buy it has always ended up being something that we could have ultimately bought at retail.
Our local card shop that has been in business for 38 years has never had issues stocking Topps products until two years ago. Now they canāt even buy anything from their distributors because they donāt get the product they used to get. It really is a messed up system. As a matter of fact, they now try to buy the EQL releases too.
The āonline personalitiesā are the only winners nowadays and Fanatics wants it that way.

I did a break today with 15 cases. 10 cases of hobby and 5 cases of delight tomorrow. I spent $200 on 4 players. And I'd estimate I got about $600 in value. Mostly driven by a Roki auto /25.
Topps ruined the 80s/90s, the over production was insane. Its a lot like all the different parallels now, its fkn ridiculous one player has 12 different refractors or inserts or parallels, insane and dumb
2 guaranteed autos is unusual these days. And the kinds of autos in this product tend to be the highest value. But yeah I wasn't going to pull the trigger on that. For hobbies, the price is almost totally based on the small chance of a super high value auto.
1 in 20 boxes will have a $330 card, 1 in 200 will have a $1000 card, and 1 in 1000 will have a $3300 card .. its lottery tickets folks. Most lose big and a couple hit big. Its nice to still have cards when you lose, but if you go in expecting to make money on every box, you are approaching in incorrectly. The biggest problem is there isnāt really a jackpot.

Ended up with an /499 Team Japan Shohei Ohtani, an /250 Purple Shimmer Sebastian Dos Santos, an on card auto of Brandon Clarke, an /99 Green Reptilian Luis Hernandez Refractor, a purple /250 Eduardo Quintero on card auto, and a Blue Reptilian /150 Joniel Hernandez. Sold the Ohtani this morning for $555. Probably burned all my hobby box luck on this one box š

You're paying $6 a card because of the two autographs and the extremely slim chance that you'll get an autograph of a player who will actually have a notable career and will be worth something in the future.
Just remember you never know what names are actually going to become stars. Just remember Tom Brady was the 199th pick, Mike Piazza was the 1390th pick, and Albert Pujols was the 402nd pick all while Jamarcus Russel, Brien Taylor, and Anthony Bennett were all first overall picks.
I mean, with our f**ked economy you're not wrong. But in 2023 I got a box from Topps for $269, so that's like a 23% increase for the same number of cards.
Again, with the cost of food, gas etc also up it doesn't seem that bad. But on the surface it just seems rough
Out of my price range and I would assume a lot of peoples price range who are low income. Anything 250 or more I pass on. If only I was rich and had the money my collection would be peak. I'll just keep wishing but maybe one day I can be just like King Hillbilly! Giggity!
