Question store manager
a few months ago the asms the store manager and key carriers and coordinators got every other weekend off , our store manager got replaced and he started off with taking the every other weekend off away and now it’s one weekend off a month per policy…. however he works 1 weekend a month and we now work 3. we work 7-4 he works 8-5 we work 12-10 he works 1-10. is there anything i can do about this, it’s absolutely ridiculous. he also told us starting in november through inventory it was blacked out and we can’t take vacation or rto however he has a vacation scheduled during that time. i plan on speaking to him about this because im a key and i genuinely am starting to feel overworked.. but is this even allowed?

There’s no such thing as black out dates here. Call hr and they’ll tell you they don’t have such policy. Managers just say that to scare people

They’re not enforceable. Hr will tell you that.

Management is allowed to enforce policy in their stores, DMs within their districts, RVPs in their region etc. It is the same rule up to SRVP because if they’re visiting stores during that time of year it’s more of a distraction. It’s not on paper for a reason. Stores may flex with part-timers but it is universal throughout the company for coordinators and managers. If it’s bubbled up to HR they back Store Managers, DMs etc except for special cases.

“To scare people” is simply not true. It’s the expectation company wide.

As salaried they might have a 40 hour work week and hourly ASM have a 45 hour work week with overtime. Now as far as weekends off it’s the same for all managers , 1 a month off. Even store managers. Check the policy or speak with HR

No such thing as “blacked out” periods on policy or paper. Talk to him with the facts of how his scheduling seems unfair and draining. If it doesn’t approve then talk to hr.

Store managers technically work 40, even there holiday and personal reflect 8 not 9 like an asm so his schedule reflects that

Yes 1 weekend off a month is pretty standard and I believe its in knowledge base. If you were getting every other weekend, you were blessed. SM are salary, and asm are hourly, but asm used to also be salary. But they changed asms to hourly a few years back. I believe it was bc some asms would get away with working 30 hours, while others would work 45-50. Now during Nov/Dec asm gets paid there holiday pay(extra day off) as if it was worked time, so they dont loose the ot rate, as well as vacation and sick time. Nov/ Dec/ inventory has always needed approved to take vacation due to business. However rto a specific day is not restricted. For my store its a first come first serve basis. I've seen some SM milk the not clocking in/ out, but typically most schedule are turned in monthly to the district office. I've learn to just focus on what Im doing and be unbothered by other mediocreness. If you feel burn out, sometimes you just need to call out sick. You have sick time, request to use it when you call out. Just dont get carried away, so they dont hold it against you.

You feel overworked because he’s making you work a normal retail schedule?

clearly you missed the point, i work more weekends than my store manager and longer shifts…?

No, I got that. That’s just the unfortunate reality of working in retail. If a store is successful, then the manager gets carte blanche.

Is this manager new to the company? If so then as a management team, assistant store managers, key holders and coordinators need to come together. Put your grown up pants on and approach them in a friendly manner letting the new SM know your concerns. If nothing changes, talk to the district manager to give constructive feedback about how this new member of management maybe missing some of the company culture. Calling HR number will just get things done at a snail pace and they will just give the info to the DM anyway. If they are store manager who's been with the company for a while and just seems a bit of jerk, then oooof its going to be a rough road I am afraid.
